#What U Watchin’ #5: Jersey Shore: Apologize To Sammi!

Jersey Shore was a reality tv show that premiered in 2009 that documented the summer of 8 (9) roommates picked to live in a house together. We watched them grow over four years and six seasons and various locations have hosted them for their summer fun. Nicole, Jenni, Mike, Pauly, Angelina, Deena, Sammi, Vinny, and Ronnie are the nine roommates selected to display their ‘guido’ and ‘guidette’ lifestyle. Most of their summers included hookups, fighting, sadness, and happiness which made for a perfect recipe for one of the best trashy reality tv shows.

While talking about Jersey Shore, I feel like we talk about most of the cast except one which is Sammi. There was a major contrast between Sammi and her other roommates as she was more put together and often kept to herself. Sammi’s main point of the show was her extremely toxic relationship with then ex-boyfriend, Ronnie. Sammi was often subjected to a lot of mental, emotional, and sometimes physical abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend and as viewers, we didn’t bat an eye at what was happening. Though Sammi wasn’t completely innocent as to why the relationship was toxic, she often took the brunt of the blame when it came to them ruining the other roommate's experience she was often criticized by both the girls and boys while they coddled Ronnie after his vile actions towards her.

One of the most iconic moments of Sammi’s time on the Jersey Shore was The Note. Long story short, Ronnie cheated on Sammi at the club when she wasn’t there then went on to lay in bed with her as if nothing happened. All of the boys knew and Angelina was the one girl that was also there that night. Angelina tells Nicole and Jenni what happened at the club with the intention of them telling Sammi. Jenni and Nicole not knowing how to handle telling Sammi directly opt to write an anonymous note instead so it could keep them from having possible tension within the house. The note backfired on Nicole and Jenni and instead of Sammi being grateful that they were looking out for her like she asked she instead accused them of making her look like a fool while Ronnie barely got backlash, it led to a physical altercation between Sammi and Jenni and her relationship with the house being damaged be they looked at her like she was dumb because she continued her relationship with Ronnie.

The note drama carried on to season three of Jersey Shore where in the first episode there is a major confrontation involving Sammi which leads to having another altercation with Jenni over their past drama. The whole season though it was entertaining to watch we all watched as Sammi was in an abusive relationship with barely anyone stepping in. One of the instances included Ronnie ruining all of her personal belongings and then being surprised when she told the roommates that she is leaving for the sake of her mental health.

In 2018, the cast all reunited to do the show Jersey Shore: Family Vacation which is an (unnecessary)spin-off documenting the cast members' life after the shore which includes their relationships, friendships, and children. All of the cast have participated in the show (including Angelina) but one of the original cast mates who did not sign on to do the reunion show which was Sammi. Sammi chose not to return because she was in a completely different space in her life at that time and she isn’t the same person she was when she was 23 years old. Though removed from the family vacation show, Sammi was often brought up as the butt of their jokes most of them mocking her absence, her relationship with her ex, and her old behaviors. Most of the roommates laughed at the jokes that were made and even went as far as making a doll that was reminiscent of Sammi. While they all laughed at the jokes only one roommate did not partake in the jokes which were Deena, Deena says she doesn’t find any of the jokes funny and out of respect for Sammi and their friendship Deena asked them to stop making the jokes. This leads me to believe, that they never truly respected Sammi or cared about what she was going through while on the show. She was misunderstood but they also didn’t want to understand why she did certain things.

The power of rewatching changes my perspective on so many lovable reality shows that we were entertained by. Sammi was not the villain that she was portrayed as in the early 2010s, she just needed someone who understood what was happening and would offer her guidance. Sammi was young and dumb in a highly televised situation left with millions to judge her and openly criticize her. Although Sammi does interact with some Jersey Shore content, I get why Sammi has distanced herself from the show as a whole. Her growth as a person doesn’t correlate to who she was while on the show, she’s doing well for herself with her clothing brand and looks happy where she is.
