Happy birthday, Marsha P. Johnson! (August 24, 1945)
An influential figure in the early LGBT rights movement, Marsha P. Johnson was born in New Jersey to a working class family. Johnson first began dressing as a girl as a young age, but chose to suppress her desires and identity for many years due to bigoted harassment. After graduating high school, Johnson left home for New York City, where she finally allowed herself to come out. She began performing as a drag queen and frequenting the Stonewall Inn. She was involved in the Stonewall Uprising, though denied accounts of being one of the leaders of the rising, and continued to play a major role in the gay rights movement afterward. Johnson organized with the Gay Liberation Front and co-founded Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries, an organization which sought to provide food and shelter to homeless LGBT youth. Unhoused herself for much of her time in New York, Johnson often relied on sex work in order to get by. In 1992, Johnson's body was recovered from the Hudson River; she had evidently been murdered in a hate crime. The police ruled her death a suicide despite the evidence against this, and Johnson's friends and allies fought for years to have the case reopened and investigated as a homicide.

Dr. Betty Shabazz (born Betty Dean Sanders; May 28, 1934 – June 23, 1997) known as Betty X, was an educator and civil rights, advocate. She was the wife of Malcolm X.
She was born Betty Dean Sanders to Ollie May Sanders and Shelman Sandlin. She was born in Pinehurst. She was placed with Lorenzo Don Malloy and Helen Lowe Malloy who became her foster parents.
She grew up in Detroit. She graduated from Northern High School in Detroit and enrolled in Tuskegee Institute where she began studying elementary education. She switched her major to nursing after months of working at the front desk at the campus hospital. She graduated from Brooklyn State College of Nursing in New York City with a BS.
She joined the Nation of Islam. She became Sister Betty X and for the first time began to publicly acknowledge racism in America. She married Malcolm (1958-1965). They were parents to six girls (the twins were born after his assignation).
She began giving public lectures which focused on the African American condition. She fought for education and human-rights causes, as well as issues crucial to women and children.
She earned an MA in Public Health Administration at Jersey City State College. She taught remedial reading and childhood health care, while she was completing her Ph.D. in Education at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. She joined the faculty of Medgar Evers College. She became the College’s director of public relations.
She spent her final years trying to remind audiences of the historical legacy of her husband Malcolm X. By the early 1990s renewed interest in Malcolm X, including the 1992 film of the same name with Denzel Washington playing the title role, helped increase popular awareness of that legacy. She died three weeks after her grandson, set fire to her Yonkers, New York apartment. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence #deltasigmatheta

Sinead O’Connor, Evocative and Outspoken Singer, Is Dead at 56
She broke out with the single “Nothing Compares 2 U,” then caused an uproar a few years later by ripping up a photo of Pope John Paul II on “S.N.L.”

By Ben Sisario and Joe Coscarelli July 26, 2023 Updated 5:41 p.m. ET Leer en español
Sinead O’Connor, the outspoken Irish singer-songwriter known for her powerful, evocative voice, as showcased on her biggest hit, a breathtaking rendition of Prince’s “Nothing Compares 2 U,” and for her political provocations onstage and off, has died. She was 56.
Her longtime friend Bob Geldof, the Irish musician and activist, confirmed her death, as did her family in a statement, according to the BBC and the Irish public broadcaster RTE.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinead,” the statement said. “Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.” No other details were provided.
Recognizable by her shaved head and by wide eyes that could appear pained or full of rage, Ms. O’Connor released 10 studio albums, beginning with the alternative hit “The Lion and the Cobra” in 1987. She went on to sell millions of albums worldwide, breaking out with “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got” in 1990.
That album, featuring “Nothing Compares 2 U,” a No. 1 hit around the world and an MTV staple, won a Grammy Award in 1991 for best alternative music performance — although Ms. O’Connor boycotted the ceremony over what she called the show’s excessive commercialism.
Ms. O’Connor rarely shrank from controversy, though it often came with consequences for her career.
In 1990, she threatened to cancel a performance in New Jersey if “The Star-Spangled Banner” was played at the concert hall ahead of her appearance, drawing the ire of no less than Frank Sinatra. That same year, she backed out of an appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in protest of the misogyny she perceived in the comedy of Andrew Dice Clay, who was scheduled to host.
But all of that paled in comparison to the uproar caused when Ms. O’Connor, appearing on “S.N.L.” in 1992 — shortly after the release of her third album, “Am I Not Your Girl?” — ended an a cappella performance of Bob Marley’s “War” by ripping a photo of Pope John Paul II into pieces as a stance against sexual abuse in the Roman Catholic Church. “Fight the real enemy,” she said.
That incident immediately made her a target of criticism and scorn, from social conservatives and beyond. Two weeks after her “S.N.L.” appearance, she was loudly booed at a Bob Dylan tribute concert at Madison Square Garden. (She had planned to perform Mr. Dylan’s “I Believe in You,” but she sang “War” again, rushing off the stage before she had finished.)
For a time, the vitriol directed at Ms. O’Connor was so pervasive that it became a kind of pop culture meme in itself. On “S.N.L.” in early 1993, Madonna mocked the controversy by tearing up a picture of Joey Buttafuoco, the Long Island auto mechanic who was a tabloid fixture at the time because of his affair with a 17-year-old girl.
Once a rising star, Ms. O’Connor then stumbled. “Am I Not Your Girl?,” an album of jazz and pop standards like “Why Don’t You Do Right?” and “Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered,” was stalled on the charts at No. 27. Her next album, “Universal Mother” (1994), went no higher than No. 36.
Tumblr media
The British musician Tim Burgess, of the band Charlatans (known in the United States as the Charlatans UK), wrote on Twitter on Wednesday: “Sinead was the true embodiment of a punk spirit. She did not compromise and that made her life more of a struggle.”
Ms. O’Connor never had another major hit in the United States after “The Emperor’s New Clothes,” from “I Do Not Want What I Haven’t Got,” although for a time she remained a staple on the British charts.
But in her 2021 memoir, “Rememberings,” Ms. O’Connor portrayed ripping up the photo of the pope as a righteous act of protest — and therefore a success.
“I feel that having a No. 1 record derailed my career,” she wrote, “and my tearing the photo put me back on the right track.”
She elaborated in an interview with The New York Times that same year, calling the incident an act of defiance against the constraints of pop stardom.
“I’m not sorry I did it. It was brilliant,” Ms. O’Connor said. “But it was very traumatizing,” she added. “It was open season on treating me like a crazy bitch.”
Sinead Marie Bernadette O’Connor was born in Glenageary, a suburb of Dublin, on Dec. 8, 1966. Her father, John, was an engineer, and her mother, Johanna, was a dressmaker.
In interviews, and in her memoir, Ms. O’Connor spoke openly of having a traumatic childhood. She said that her mother physically abused her and that she had been deeply affected by her parents’ separation, which happened when she was 8. In her teens, she was arrested for shoplifting and sent to reform schools.
Tumblr media
When she was 15, Ms. O’Connor sang “Evergreen” — the love theme from “A Star Is Born,” made famous by Barbra Streisand — at a wedding, and was discovered by Paul Byrne, a drummer who had an affiliation with the Irish band U2. She left boarding school at 16 and began her career, supporting herself by waitressing and performing “kiss-o-grams” in a kinky French maid costume.
“The Lion and the Cobra” — the title is an allusion to Psalm 91 — marked her as a rising talent with a spiritual heart, an ear for offbeat melody and a fierce and combative style. Her music drew from 1980s-vintage alternative rock, hip-hop and flashes of Celtic folk that came through when her voice raised to high registers.
She drew headlines for defending the Irish Republican Army and publicly jeered U2 — whose members had supported her — as “bombastic.” She also said she had rejected attempts by her record company, Ensign, to adopt a more conventional image.
The leaders of the label “wanted me to wear high-heel boots and tight jeans and grow my hair,” Ms. O’Connor told Rolling Stone in 1991. “And I decided that they were so pathetic that I shaved my head so there couldn’t be any further discussion.”
“Nothing Compares 2 U” — originally released by the Family, a Prince side project, in 1985 — became a phenomenon when Ms. O’Connor released it five years later. The video for the song, trained closely on her emotive face, was hypnotic, and Ms. O’Connor’s voice, as it raised from delicate, breathy notes to powerful cries, stopped listeners in their tracks. Singers like Alanis Morissette cited Ms. O’Connor’s work from this period as a key influence.
Tumblr media
Not long after “Nothing Compares” became a hit, Ms. O’Connor accused Prince of physically threatening her. She elaborated on the story in her memoir, saying that Prince, at his Hollywood mansion, chastised her for swearing in interviews and suggested a pillow fight, only to hit her with something hard that was in his pillowcase. She escaped on foot in the middle of the night, she said, but Prince chased her around the highway.
The effects of childhood trauma, and finding ways to fight and heal, became a central part of her work and her personal philosophy. “The cause of all the world’s problems, as far as I’m concerned, is child abuse,” Ms. O’Connor told Spin magazine in 1991.
Her mother, whom Ms. O’Connor described as an alcoholic, died when she was 18. In her memoir, Ms. O’Connor said that on the day her mother died she took a picture of the pope from her mother’s wall; it was that photo that she destroyed on television.
On later albums, she made warmly expansive pop-rock (“Faith and Courage,” 2000), played traditional Irish songs (“Sean-Nós Nua,” 2002) and revisited classic reggae songs (“Throw Down Your Arms,” 2005). Her last album was “I’m Not Bossy, I’m the Boss,” released in 2014.
As her music career slowed, Ms. O’Connor, who had been open in the past about her mental health struggles, became an increasingly erratic public figure, often sharing unfiltered opinions and personal details on social media.
In 2007, she revealed on Oprah Winfrey’s television show that she had been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and that she had tried to kill herself on her 33rd birthday. Her son Shane died by suicide in 2022, at 17.
Ms. O’Connor said in 2012 that she had been misdiagnosed and that she was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder stemming from a history of child abuse. “Recovery from child abuse is a life’s work,” she told People magazine.
Several years ago she converted to Islam and started using the name Shuhada Sadaqat, though she continued to answer to O’Connor as well.
Complete information on survivors was not immediately available. Ms. O’Connor had two brothers, Joe and John, and one sister, Eimear, as well as three stepsisters and a stepbrother. She wrote in her memoir that she was married four times and that she had four children: three sons, Jake, Shane and Yeshua, and a daughter, Roisin.
In discussing her memoir with The Times in 2021, Ms. O’Connor focused on her decision to tear up the photo of John Paul II as a signal moment in a life of protest and defiance.
“The media was making me out to be crazy because I wasn’t acting like a pop star was supposed to act,” she said. “It seems to me that being a pop star is almost like being in a type of prison. You have to be a good girl.”

Dead-End's Love Character Bios
Craig Ryan Jr: Born on May 13th, 1991, Craig is the first child of Craig Ryan and Edna Ryan. When he was one, he got two twin brothers, James and Eugene, along with his father abandoning them. He also earned the nickname Dead-End after hitting his face on a dead-end street sign after a dare that his oldest friend Adam Taylor suggested. Which is how he met his best friend, Michael Davis. When he was young, he met Atra Chance, and the two were basically inseparable. He may be a tough, stubborn, cold, calm, and collected punk, but don't he don't bite if you bark too loud.
Atra Chance: Born on April 8th, 1992, Atra has a Japanese mom, Shizuka Chance, and American dad, Casey Chance. She's an only child and was always the odd one out. Her two close friends are Suki Honda and Emma Daaé. When she was young, she met Craig Ryan Jr., and the two were basically inseparable. She may be described as kindhearted, sweet, naive, cheerful, and smart, but she does have a tough side sometimes.
Michael Davis: Born on February 21st, 1992, Michael is from Philadelphia Pennsylvania but moved to Mays Point News Jersey when he was five, and when he got back surgery he met his best friend Craig Ryan Jr. Michael is a punk but can be kinda nice just don't fuck with him.
Emma Daaé: Born October 6th, 1992, she is a French American girl who gets her looks from her mother but not her freckles. She is kind and sweet but very mature for her age. She loves to read, which is something her and Atra's close friend Craig have in common. She met Atra Chance and her friend Suki in middle school and connected on their love for Phil Collins and Duran Duran. She might be beautiful, but don't let that fool you she's quite smart and can sometimes get ahead of herself.
Suki Honda: Born on July 29th, 1992, Suki is a firecracker having been raised by her grandmother she learned so much on Japanese culture and is a mega anime fan just don't tell her dubbed is better but she loves the voice actors. Her only Japanese friend is Atra but loves the fact that her friend Craig loves Japanese culture. Again, she may be a firecracker and will mess you up if you insult or hurt her friends, but she can be sweet.
Adam Taylor: Born on February 22nd of 1992, Adam comes from a Greek mother and American father, and he has a love for the stage. One thing him, Craig, and Emma have in common. He is a blast to be around but can be a prick sometimes. While he might not be Craig's closest friend, he is his oldest and even is responsible for why Craig became Dead-End.

re: yellowjackets au.
there's already a lot in yj that's influenced by tp / just laura herself! for the most part, it's not very deep --- so this isn't that kind of post --- but i do want to point some of it out for people who haven't seen peaks, because i think it goes a ways to show how easy it is to just throw her in there.
so.
character tribute 1: laura [palmer; sheryl] lee. christian but not in That Way. the episode about laura lee's flight/sacrifice was originally titled 'fire walk with me' after the 1992 film about laura's, so i know for SURE that those parallels were not accidental.
character tribute 2: van. this one's really kind of just 'she's gay and they have the same surname, and every time a girl in horror has the name palmer it's for the same reason' but they'd get along really well. so she gets a mention, anyway.
lottie's powers, if you believe they're powers, are pretty much the same as laura's. the thing is, though, that laura's are tied to a specific group of Beings that i don't especially care to drag into this (even though they live in the pnw, which funnily Is Where They Are). i imagine she'd be able to be useful in surprising ways, though, she's bad to have dreams / premonitions about her own situations. if she tells you you should look over there for food, etc., you should probably do it.
(she is more likely to just go after it herself, though. she definitely isn't going to broadcast That Shit.)
the mall/mirror universe (ft. misty's dreamscape) is all From Peaks. misty's dreamscape is an actual set from peaks --- it's the black lodge/red room/basically the spirit house (where laura 'lives' after she dies, and one of the places she visits in her dreams beforehand). there's a lot of interesting stuff to get in here in the sci-fi of it all, BUT i don't know how much farther they'll take the concept of tulpas/doppelgangers, so i will not. do that.
about actually throwing her in there:
she actually knows a lot about #survival and i would imagine that's true even if she's been stranded in jersey for some ungodly reason, though she might not have so much hands-on experience. i always say laura was a boy scout and i kind of really mean it.
if there's something that may or may not need doing, and half the group is like "hell, no, i don't have a death wish", laura will be in the other half. every time. i'd say she'd be king of the other half, but that spot is already taken. so thanks for taking that off our hands, tai.
they're kids here so it's not like she's running around with EMT certification or whatever, but she will be at least as knowledgable as misty and has probably had more practice, as she is pretty used to being responsible for children. and i hope. misty is not.
i don't really have thoughts about her surviving or not; i kind of assume that if this takes off and i'm doing a lot of development with other survivors, she will, and if not, it's anybody's guess. but i just really am amused by the Very Real Thought that she at least wouldn't be one of the first to die. which is, like, nice for her. once.
and it's kind of... well. obviously not a vacation. but she would be at all times very aware that she dodged a bullet by not being home / from her abusers assuming she's dead. so i think she'd be able to be present in a way she usually isn't, especially when she's [gestures vaguely] that age.
she has tarot cards. sorry to all of you.

AUDREY EVANS,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ALLIE STEVENS,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎AND THE NUMBER 11.
When Audrey got welcomed onto the Wiskayok Yellowjackets as a freshman,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she was given the number 11.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎This number was usually given to freshman welcomed onto the varsity team,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎if there were any.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Audrey got welcomed onto the team in 1992,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and remained the only freshman welcomed onto the varsity team...‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎until Allie Stevens.
Audrey was not allowed to re-tryout for the 1995-1996 season,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎but her mother required her to continue participating in the team‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(an agreement made between Coach Martinez,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Coach Ben,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and Audrey's mom to take care of her mental health).‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Following tryouts,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Coach Martinez pulled Audrey into his office and informed her that her number,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎the jersey that she cared so deeply for,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎was going to Allie Stevens.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Audrey knew that her number was going to someone else,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎it only made sense given the fact that she was no longer on the team,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎but when he told her that her legacy would continue!‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎The number 11 was going to a freshman!‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎She became angry.
Audrey was naturally cold to the team,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎her senior year.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Quiet,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she sat on the sidelines and tried not to be too involved,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎much to her mother's displeasure.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎For Allie,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎on the other hand,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she was mean,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎short.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎It was a point she was making,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎a big:‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎fuck you for taking this shit from me.
When Allie broke her leg,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Audrey was not upset in the slightest,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎in fact she saw it as a blessing.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Compared to when Audrey was let on the team,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Allie was much weaker than she ever was.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎She also could not imagine her taking Audrey's dream.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Nationals was all Audrey wanted,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and she failed to bring her team to win states due to her being benched the previous year.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Allie wasn't getting to steal the thunder,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and at the very least:‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she was happy.
Had Allie been on the plane,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Audrey for sure wouldn't go.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎It already took leagues of convincing and subtle hint droppings from Coach Ben for her to even consider it‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎(plus,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎her mother pleaded...‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and Audrey truly did love her mom),‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎but that was no longer a problem.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Allie wasn't going,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎and fuck it!‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎A free ride on a private plane?‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎In what world would she get that opportunity again?‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎All she had to do was avoid the rest of the team,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎sit by herself.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎She always loved plane rides to South Carolina to see her dad's family...
Then the plane crashes.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Allie is at home recovering from a broken boon and Audrey is stranded in the woods with only a weeks worth of pain meds and salt tablets.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎She looks to Ben and sees the man who convinced her to come on the plane,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she thinks of Allie and thinks of the girl who was supposed to be in her place.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎How ugly was her envy?‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎So ugly that it brought her joy when it was squandered.‎‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎She no longer envied the girl whose bone stuck out from her leg,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎because Audrey never failed like that,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎she was always a strong player from day one,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎so much so that the seniors on the team with her appreciated her abilities.‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Allie was a failure,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎Audrey was a success story,‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎ ‎yet only one was stranded in the woods.

Sabias QUE?
Posteriormente, protagonizó la serie “The Voyage Of The Mimi” (1984).
Tumblr media
Tras consolidarse como superhéroe en el universo cinematográfico de DC Cómics, Affleck actuó en “Live by Night” (2016), “Triple Frontier” (2019), “The Last Thing He Wanted” (2020), “The Last Duel” (2022) y “Deep Water” (2022), sólo por mencionar algunas.
Tumblr media

2023 in Review 3: the Katie Krew
Tumblr media
The Katie Krew did not start out to be a krew.
When I first started thinking about getting back into dolls, I happened on a discussion of Creata's "clones" from the 1980s. Like a lot of fashion doll lines of the late 20th century, it's unclear how much the dolls were actual clones and how much they were simply fashion dolls doing their own thing. The rock 'n' roll Creata line, for instance, was probably a clone for Hasbro's Jem & the Holograms. But the Creata Flower Fairies? Much less clear.
Really unclear on its clone origins is the 6-1/4" doll at front left, with dark curled hair, wearing her karate practice outfit over a red striped top. That's Creata's "Today's Girls" Hillary. "Today's Girls" debuted several years before Stacie was a twinkle in Mattel's eye, but long after Todd and Tutti. There's really no Mattel niche that these dolls match! They were definitely also used as little sisters for the Flower Fairies, but mine was sold as a little equestrian (foreshadowing Kid Kore's horse riders).
My first Kid Kore Katie happened because I was researching Native American clone dolls (there were a lot in the 1990s). I bookmarked on eBay a cute and cheap brown-skinned doll with dark braids -- the doll now sitting in the front row wearing checked shorts and a blue and pink jersey, waiting for her hair to be rebraided. That's a Dancing Brook, the "little sister" of the Heartland families. She is now officially called Brooke.
Then it was a no-brainer to get a Rosa Lee, the Romani Katie. She's the curly haired brown girl behind Hillary, wearing a flowered dress.
The golden-blonde Katie, now named Isabelle, came as a lot with my Black(ish) 2002 Jodi, along with the brunette Katie that was shorn and flocked in titian to become Ben. Isabelle is at middle right, wearing an aqua gingham cowgirl outfit with gold trim. Ben is perched above her in khakis and a red and aqua sweater. (Katie originally had a brown-haired dude pal (Todd clone) named Kyle, who was also dressed in western wear as Pistol Pete. Kyle is hard to find, and it was more fun to make my own younger brother for my redheaded Kelsey.
Bette Mae, the brown gal with lots of straight black hair, wearing the pink striped shirt at middle left, is my second Dancing Brook. She's named for one of the leaders of the Seminoles in Florida, as I decided to have the two Dancing Brooks come from different tribes. She arrived with a large lot of vintage Katie clothes, which is why everyone here except Hillary has shoes!
Katies are absolutely, positively a direct competitor with Mattel's Stacie. They appear in a sister pack in 1992. However, Katie has a slightly younger sister, Carla, who was being sold as "Girls Club" before Stacie launched. Carla had a Katie head mold on what sure looks in photos like a Creata 6.25" body like Hillary.
The Katie Krew proved so compelling that I got rid of my 1990s Stacie and Whitney dolls, who'd once been major thrift finds (but Stacie had worn the same outfit for 10 years, so my enthusiasm wasn't as high as I thought). I'm still a little on the fence about Bette Mae, but every time I put her next to Brooke, I notice subtle differences in their face-up and decide she's uniquely adorable.

new jersey trio jomanda were at one time the most successful house music girl groups. formed in 1987, the group placed four top 10 singles on billboard’s hot dance chart between 1988 and 1992 including the captivating and timeless “got a love for you.”
released in spring 1991, as house music was experiencing exponential growth a pop radio, “got a love for you” was both a club and radio hit. remixed by legendary chicago house music pioneer steve “silk” hurley, “got a love for you” insights a euphoric feeling from the moment of the opening chords.
youtube
“got a love for you” topped billboard’s dance chart in july 1991 and garnered crossover radio exposure propelling the song to #40 in billboard’s hot 100.
unfortunately, like many dance artists signed to major labels that achieved pop success, jomanda’s opted to transition into a more r&b sound with their 1993 sophomore album. this alienated their core fans and after the album failed to yield any sizable hits, the group disbanded in 1994.
group member joanne thomas died in october 2003, after a three year battle with colon cancer.
