Review of the Circulatory System’s show, Flagpole, 14 July 2004
[source]
transcript:
CIRCULATORY SYSTEM, THE LAY ALL OVER ITS Flicker Theatre & Bar Wednesday. June 30
I woke from a hard late afternoon sleep and a spy dream; spies that cling to the ceiling and under floorboards. It was blustery and I was to head to Flicker for "acoustic" Circulatory System. Good thing I got there in time, as the night would sell out. Even the outdoor seating was retracted. Even a woman who'd flown from Boston for just this concert was turned away I felt an out-of-season "Christmas Carol" window scene on my back as dozens of hopefuls did their best Tiny Tims, hoping to get a crumb off the feast inside. The dimly lit theatre lengthened my awake/ asleep fog as the opening act readied.
The Lay All Over Its were down from Chicago, with Jason Ajemian on double bass and vocals, and Nori Tanaka on drums. Ajemian plays in free- jazz trio Triage, though he’s no stranger to the rootsier approach; his Born Heller duo with Josephine Foster is a new kind of Americana, highly idiosyncratic with an eye towards the past. Tanaka, originally from Fukuoka, Japan, now calls Illinois home. He plays in various configurations with the likes of Jett Parker and Tatsu Aoki. demonstrating remarkable flexibility and spontaneous adaptations. And so it began. Washes of cymbals and toms and strumming and singing in perpetual motion arched like Gorecki's “Third.’ Harmonics, drones, displacement of rhythms, headbobbing throughout. Circular sheets of pulse modestly dispatched (from Tanaka's kit. from his heart
Taps to end, like the rain.
Then bowing—sad, multivoiced broken folk—beautiful, as drums entered again, but it took a while to notice their intermittent punctuations. More frenetic, this kind of heavy still had forward momentum with no obvious subdivisions. The audience was quiet. A major key explosion and the drums dropped out. It was a train what kept rollin’ in the brushes and a hard-formed triplets. Ajemian in his upper reaches sang what I couldn't understand—but didn't need to— overtop “No. no. no, no, no, no. no.' his intonation like on a Smithsonian Folkways recording. Patter of snare, scratch of bow. it sounded timeless. Plucked pointillist ghost notes, pizzicato expressionism, continue drum creating rapid call and response. Busy with high flourishes like Little Richard slowing and starting. Deep African groove book-ended by knotty swing jazz vamps to a sparer rat-a-tat percussion solo Drums front and center, just as they've been the whole way, though now we focus on the undercurrent. A chance to stretch, to fixate on cells of rhythmic exchange. Bass entry on cue in seamless integration. More raw singing, like a field song, and it stopped.
I was still that (good) groggy, maybe more so; my spy dream seemed reality as people may well have hung from the ratters and snuck through doorways, in expectation. (And I'd love to check out Circulatory System's record collections; the in-between band music was cool-headed.) We waited in this calm... Finally, with spare sustained tones, Will Hart sang “been such a long time" (if it had. all was forgiven) over a gentle propulsion. Julian Koster sawed away his echo chamber opera. This continued until drummers Hannah Jones and Derek Almstead kicked in with the big beat; it was Pink Floyd planetarium. King Crimson angularity and classic-rock catharsis as John Fernandes' bass clarinet bottomed out. Soon traditional instruments were traded for two pitchers of water, pouring from one to the other as Lay All Over Its’ Ajemian added high sparkle and low bow. There was even kissing of the microphone, close up.
On to Pete Erchick’s keyboard bass pulse and a big stadium sound, a nice slurry clarinet break all mellowed out in staccato rhythm through the changes, an expanded sense of time. As Hart chanted “one by one" all stopped and resumed together, an Arnold Dreyblatt insistence and calm. The System shifted from jazzy to straightforward rock and back. A living cross-fade to slow dirges into Beatles-disco speedup-hushed freakout. The last suite: a mid-tempo shuttle, a guitar and voice reduction, some trading bass. “Now is the only time." Easy waves as Fernandes walked backwards down the center aisle with some sort of noisemaker. I slept well, spies be damned.

jaimie branch Album Review: Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war))
Tumblr media
(International Anthem)
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Though the late trumpeter and composer jaimie branch's third album Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) is a final statement, it's even more effective as an eternal one. It begins with keyboards that sound like church organs, an eerily somber sonic manifestation of irrevocability. As Chad Taylor's rolling drums enter, branch gives us one of her trademark trumpet blares, as if to announce, "I'm here." She wasn't one to spend much more time announcing her presence, though--the track segues into an Afro-Latin style jam, clacking percussion and horns in line with Lester St. Louis' nervy bowed cello. ((world war)) from then on spends most of its runtime just the way branch liked it, in a groove, with some breaks along the way to remind us of the urgency of the moment.
The story behind ((world war)) is bound to become lore. It was recorded in April 2022 during branch's artist residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha. It was almost completed when she unexpectedly passed away later that year; her sister Kate, family, friends, and International Anthem then finished the album as they envisioned branch would have. It's branch's finest statement, both in terms of sonic virtuosity and cohesive ideality. On tracks like "borealis dancing" and "baba louie", the band stunningly changes rhythm and style halfway through, to shuffling hip-hop and funk on the former and from calypso to drippy jazz dub on the latter. Lead single "take over the world" is a masterclass in controlled chaos. branch repeats the refrains "Gonna take over the world / and give it back to the land" with stutters and trills, shouting koans atop simmering cello, driving drums, and Jason Ajemian's chugging bass. Eventually, branch puts delay pedal on her voice, sounding like something straight out of Kid A, uncanny but comforting and hopeful instead of glacial and isolating.
Perhaps the standout track on ((world war)) is "burning grey", which sees branch deliver more mantras atop the musical propulsion, howling like a wolf while begging us, "don't forget the fight". It's when she repeats "I wish I had the time" that she not only unintentionally breaks our hearts, given the context, but puts the onus on us to continue what she started. Midway through, the song collapses in on itself, almost a show of what happens when you do forget the communal mission of the human condition. branch was always inspiring, but on ((world war)), she galvanizes us into action.

Fly or Die — Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) (International Anthem)
Tumblr media
Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)) by jaimie branch
In an oft-referenced interview with Aquarium Drunkard, jaimie branch – an innovative and dynamic trumpet player, composer and bandleader who didn’t like capital letters – said that she’d initially shied away from the vulnerable emotional component of improvised music, “because I thought it was cheesy or corny or something like that. Like playing a simple melody is probably not something I would have done in 2007 or 2008.”
Fly or Die Fly or Die Fly or Die ((world war)), the last record by the branch-led quartet Fly or Die, released almost exactly a year after her death on August 22, 2022, is marked by just these sorts of simple melodic phrases. You can understand why a young, punkish, avant-garde artist might avoid crowd-pleasing earworms, but emotional sincerity suited branch well. As she put it, she meant every note that she played.
Lead track “aurora rising” opens with the sound of an organ (convincing, though it’s really branch on keyboard) dirgy at one end and bright at the other, laughing, almost, over Chad Taylor’s stormy timpani. branch announces herself with a regal flourish of trumpet. It’s a moment of almost smirking formality before the organ marches into “borealis dancing,” bringing bassist Jason Ajemian and cellist Lester St. Louis along into a heavy Latin groove.
Through the rousing major chords of the first half of “baba louie,” branch’s ebullient trumpet dances along with sparkling percussion, then the song dramatically shifts to showcase the sultry end of branch’s vocal range. We hear another side of her on the clamoring, frantic “take over the world.” It’s not without a little well-aimed menace that she vows to give the world “back back back back to the la la la land.” A version of the Meat Puppets’ “Comin’ Down” (here titled “the mountain” ) – a track which feels both out of place and well-placed on the record – we hear yet another side of branch as she harmonizes with the handsomely-voiced Ajemian.
branch’s work was always characterized by seamless genre fluidity, thanks to a  mishmash of influences. She was born in New York to a  Colombian mother and then raised in Chicago; she picked up  trumpet from her brother and was naturally very good at it. Her family introduced her to Michael Jackson and the Beastie Boys  and Streisand and Elvis, and then she discovered punk, grunge and Ornette Coleman. Throughout her life, she collaborated with many different artists and made music that sounded both familiar and excitingly new. She was, by all accounts, a great listener, as one in her artistic position would have to be.
Political protest was baked into her music, often in very explicit ways. Performing “prayer for amerikkka pt 1&2,” from 2019’s FLY or DIE II: bird dogs of paradise in Switzerland, she reminded her audience, “it’s not always time to be neutral.”
Speaking truth to power (or audiences, anyway) is one thing, but branch engaged in the arguably more difficult political project of community-building. On the snakey, heart-thumping “burning grey” she warns that there are people out there who will tear your heart out without a second thought. “Everything feels broken,” she sings, but “trust me/just for one moment/believe me/the future lives inside us/don’t forget to fight/don’t forget to fight/don’t forget/don’t forget/don’t forget.” She lets out a wolf-like howl, and I believe her.

jaimie branch's FLY or DIE - Boot and Saddle, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, December 18, 2016
The passing of jaimie branch last week was a huge loss for the music world. It's hard to know what to say — she seemed like she had a long, brilliant career ahead of her. Just getting started!
"When I’m up there, I’m putting it all out on the table. It’s like high risk, high reward,” she told Jennifer Kelly over on Aquarium Drunkard. "I mean every note that I play."
It's hard to feel too down about branch's death if you're listening to her music, however. And thankfully, she left behind a lot of it — a life story told in sound. Here's a little more to enjoy, via friend-of-the-blog Sebastian Petsu, who brought his trusty TASCAM tape recorder to this Philly gig, capturing branch and her amazing FLY or DIE band (Chad Taylor, Jason Ajemian, Tomeka Reid) soaring at the Boot and Saddle.
For even more, don't miss jaimie's Double Decker Music Series appearance with Sebastian, wherein the trumpeter cruises through the streets of Philadelphia, cutting through the noise. So long, breezy!

Jaimie Branch – Fly or Die (International Anthem)
Tumblr media
Fly or Die by jaimie branch
Who is Jaimie Branch? As an answer to that question, Fly or Die is definitive. The Chicagoan-turned-Brooklynite’s overdue debut is bursting with the pent-up energy of years spent cultivating an impishly bold voice and collaborating widely without the deserved reward of a reputation outside the local scene. Perhaps there’s something romantic about the image of the artist toiling under-recognized — in the face, not to mention, of commercial implausibility and historical prejudice (she’s a female free jazz musician) — but as Branch has pointed out, “existential crisis aside,” the primary force antagonizing big city artists is money. The struggle is real. At the same time, maybe the hustle is a forge, and those who never face the choice — Fly or Die — may never get off the ground. Survivors in an inhospitable environment, the pigeons presiding over the album cover look like lords of the city.
The album opens with “jump off,” 16 seconds of gritty rasping and a good reminder that you don’t get this far to start making concessions. It’s also fair warning to any unsuspecting listeners who, if they heard the second track first, might think they were in for a party record. Indeed, “theme 001” is danceable if dark, with Branch’s melodic lines engraved over Chad Taylor’s resolute groove and a menacing bed of strings courtesy of cellist Tomeka Reid and bassist Jason Ajemian. But even this tune frays apart by the end, concluding somehow with a lush, freewheeling coda textured with round-the-kit rolls, cello overtones and Matt Schneider’s chiming acoustic guitar arpeggios. These same sounds pave a segue into “…meanwhile,” a full-fledged exercise in free playing.
Knowing the range of Branch’s influences — among many others, she names Varese, Wu Tang Clan, Eric Dolphy, and Rothko in a single breath — it’s not surprising to hear Fly or Die take on so many different shapes. Where “leaves of glass” glances back at tradition with a warped brassy echo of Miles Davis and Gil Evans, “the storm” and “waltzer” explore texture and atmosphere, the latter developing into a tender group meditation. From there to the fluid fingerpicking of closer “…back at the ranch” a few tracks later entails quite a leap — and no small breadth of vision.
So what ties it all together? Carefully distributed repetitions across the album help: three intense but foot-tapping “theme” tracks; two brief trumpet soliloquies; the deferred conclusion to “…meanwhile” in “…back at the ranch,” matching acoustic guitar and all. At the same time, it’s Branch’s voice — both her assertive playing style and her compositional sensibility, scrappy and smart — that draws whatever she says back to a single recognizable source. Whether sputtering in the style of Joe McPhee or probing like Wadada Leo Smith, Branch’s trumpet is like a super-strong magnet, gathering everything around by a kind of force. In fact, some loosening up might not hurt: At a mere 35 minutes, Fly or Die leaves plenty of room for its all-star group to stretch out and speak up without sacrificing any of the trumpeter’s well-deserved time in the spotlight. But until the follow-up, we’ll take all the Jaimie Branch we can get.
