[TUVOKTOBER: Day 6] Based on this line of dialogue:
Tumblr media
#I will forever be like 'what did you mean by that??' jennifer lawrence clip about Tuvok saying he 'spoke out against it'#He isn't??? A politician?? And never was???#Is his family one which holds a certain amount of sway??#I need to know if he 'spoke out' in an official capacity - like a way that mattered to the world at large or if he was just talking shit#I tend to assume mostly the latter - maybe talking shit to specific people but still. It reminds me of how in Gravity he says#HE chose to leave Jara and school when in reality he was kicked out and banished - adjusting the facts#anyway one of the things I sincerely love about Tuvok is that he would be like one of many petty Vulcan antagonists* in another series#especially when he was younger but it's not like he's THAT much better in canon#Ex: Though Tuvok agrees & praises the peace treaty he still seems to view B'Elanna unfavorably bc she's Klingon#<- Like what Neelix says 'That's just it!! You don't feel anything FOR me but you feel things AGAINST me' that's him a nutshell#<- Another example is how he treats Chakotay in the earlier seasons: Deliberately undermining him and questioning his authority#He can be very sanctimonious both about him personally and facets of himself without much tolerance for others or deviation#It's a legit character flaw and I do love highlighting it bc I love him even when I want to choke him to death he's fascinating <3#It's also VERY interesting bc he WAS more of a rebel punk as a teen then he went to the monastery and now he is shown to be very#devoted to Vulcan ways and have a keen interest in monastic life.#I know Vulcan philosophy is NOTHING like christianity or catholicism but like forget that for a second. Ok. Now: 'Tuvok's born again swag?#off the charts' v_v thank you#bea art tag#Tuvoktober#st voyager#st voyager fanart#*And this never changes. Unlike Spock or T'Pol he never has moments (that I can recall) where the narrative's like 'GOTCHA!'#& he's never insecure about his identity as Vulcan. Never desires to feel or be more human. & I /do/ think this is bc he's older! We see#himas an ensign in 'Flashback' struggling with his identity as its pitted against humanity AND in 'Gravity' where he's shown to have disdai#for Vulcan culture & customs. It really makes me wish we had gotten more character-building episodes from him rather than character-breakin#ones where he's not really acting as himself in full. v_v#also one last thing: I recognize that other characters do try2 'GOTCHA!' Tuvok both seriously and lightheartedly but Tuvok is never framed#as being actually affected by this unlike Spock or T'Pol where it's a whole like Thing about their characters (humanity - feeling)#tuvoktober

if nickelodeon weren't cowards we could've had eddie and jerome bonding over complicated relationships with shitty dads who are trying but will never be able to make up for a life time of Issues
God they TANTALIZED us with that. The Jerome/Eddie friendship was SO CLOSE to truly blossoming, especially right at the end of season 2. And like, the show does make the connection with the two of them and their daddy issues. Mara writes about both of them in her article and makes parallels. Additionally, the two of them together go to Mr. Sweet to get Mara reinstated. Eddie also tells Jerome that Joy entered herself in the writing competition instead of Mara, and together they: 1) Ensure Mara gets credit for the father/son article, 2) Clear up the Jack Jackal stuff and reveal that Mara is Jack Jackal but throw Joy under the bus for writing the Nina article, 3) Reveal that Joy didn't enter Mara in the competition, and 4) See to it that Mara does get entered. And like, they accomplish all this scarily quickly and scarily efficiently. If they'd ever truly combined their powers, they could've been a formidable team. They could've accomplished a lot of good together, or they could have committed many crimes and evils. Like those boys did not hesitate to be VERY cold to Joy on Mara's behalf, they could've been a pretty intimidating and powerful team if they'd ever wanted to or tried. But unfortunately they were both too stupid.
So like as you were saying, yes I so wish they would've expanded upon their friendship, especially with their complicated relationships with their dads being the basis of it. Like, after the truth about Jerome's dad comes out Eddie is the first one to reach out to him and be like "hey we would've been cool with it." And when the truth about Eddie's dad comes out Jerome doesn't laugh along with most everyone else, he looks surprised and a little bit mortified, like he knows what that sort of feeling is like. And there were so many glimpses into a potential wonderful and entertaining friendship. Eddie makes Jerome violently ill via creamed carrots and then underpays him at Donkey Day, they make the dance bet which Jerome believes will make Eddie look like a fool but ends up backfiring on him instead, and Eddie sees Jerome getting kidnapped by Rufus and eventually ends up inadvertently alerting Sibuna to the problem and helping him get rescued. Jerome confronts Eddie about the letter business at the beginning of S3 [which was unfortunately probably their last major interaction :( ]. And Eddie fuckin calls him JERRY, repeatedly lol. Also, my favorite Eddie/Jerome scene: when Jerome asks Eddie for French notes, and Eddie hands him a sandwich. (And also in this scene when Jerome encourages Eddie to open up to him and tell him what's bothering him and Eddie actually DOES!!)
Not to mention both are shockingly involved in the other's relationship: Jerome pairs Eddie and Patricia for Donkey Day and makes them be tied together for a full day and likely providing a big assist in their sparking feelings for one another, he teases him for having a crush at the dance, he and Alfie make the dance bet with him, he listens to Eddie's concerns after their first date and offers him relationship advice (which he is NOT qualified to give lol), and Eddie even tells him how deep his feelings are and that he's never felt like that about a girl before, which Jerome does not understand but accepts. Also when he got stood up by Patricia, Jerome was like "wasn't she supposed to meet you already?", implying that Eddie told him about this previously and that they talk about this kind of stuff together. In season 2, Jerome might be the one he talks about his Patricia feelings/drama the most? Although that's debatable, as he does discuss them with Mara and Joy as well. Additionally, Jerome often laments about his girl problems with Mara to Eddie, he points out to Mara that Jerome very clearly treats Mara better than the rest of them (meaning he's been noticing and observing this behavior all school year to the point where it's painfully obvious to him), and pushes Mara into accepting her feelings for Jerome. In a way, neither of their relationships might happen without the help of the other.
I was so sad when they just didn't have much of a friendship in season 3, especially with all the buildup and potential at the end of season 2. They could've been everything. We truly could've had it all. But alas, we were robbed.

There are 24 JJ/Tara works on AO3 now!!!!!
Last year, before I'd written [Fooled Around - Part 2], this pairing only had TWO works on AO3. And to be honest, I had never given much thought to JJ/Tara. I'd been shipping Je T'Emliy for years, but I mostly shipped it as a triad with Emily as the overlapping partner.
Opening my eyes to the potential of JJ/Tara together ruined me for other ships. After I finished Part 2, I made it my personal mission to add to this pairing on AO3.
Now, out of 24 works on AO3 -- I'm 13 of those!!! I am so thrilled whenever I see other people starting to consider and write this ship. It's a joy to find all of you stray Jara shippers on here.
It actually reminds me a little of how Jemily was back in the day. When I first started writing Jemily in 2014, there were less than 90 JJ/Emily works on AO3. I dedicated all my time into adding to the cause and by the end of 2015, that total had doubled. (Now look how many Jemily fics there are!!)
This is to say, if you ship a rare pair -- keep on shipping it, keep on yelling about it, writing about it, creating art for it, because you never know, maybe you'll open some other people's eyes to a great new ship they hadn't considered before!

Would the Elimist have restored morphing to anyone other Tobias if they'd ended up a nothlit instead?
I think that the Doylist (out-of-universe) answer to that question would always be "yes." Tobias having the ability to morph allows him both to be a full Animorph and to be his unique mouse-eating self. If there's a different nothlit on the team, then that person has got to have morphing power on top of being in an animal shape, or else they're going to end up left out of a lot of missions the way Tobias is in #2 - #12.
The Watsonian (in-universe) answer is a little trickier. Tobias never says in so many words that he wants to be human, or that he wants to morph but remain a hawk. We know he was at minimum okay with being trapped in morph at the time it happened (#43) but also that there are a lot of things he misses from human life (#23). Tobias tells the Ellimist "you know what I want" rather than stating outright his price for helping Jara and Ket (#13). It's Rachel who assumes Tobias wants to be human full-time, and Tobias doesn't correct her. But what does Tobias actually want?
Tobias always talks about how much he sees both sides of every situation, how he wishes to have things both ways: "I am Tobias. A boy. A hawk. Some strange mix of the two" (#3). "Is the glass half empty or half full? ...Am I some kind of hideous freak of nature, a twisted concoction of mismatched parts? Or am I something new and wonderful? Depends on the day" (MM3). "In my old life, my life as a boy, I was the mouse. The prey. Stalked by predators bent on flushing my head down the men's room toilet... In my old life, my life as prey, food was not a problem. I was on the free lunch program at school" (#49). "I can never take a life, not even for my own survival, without feeling... [Elfangor's] message: You are both, Tobias. Hawk and human. You always will be. You will always kill to eat. And you will always regret" (#23). So on and so forth. Therefore, I'd say that being able to be everything at once — hawk and human, semi-andalite and adoptive hork-bajir, killer and protector, boy and non-boy — is a wish that only Tobias would make.

Trans Webcomic Character Tournament: Group Stage
It's taken... uh... we won't talk about how long it's taken, but the Trans Webcomic Character Tournament is ready to begin!
This tournament will be broken into two stages: a round-robin group stage followed by a sixteen-character single-elimination bracket.
For the group stage, characters are divided into ten groups of four* and members of each group will face each other in a round-robin format. The group winner will be the character who wins the most matches in the group (an exact tie counts as a win for both characters). If two or more characters win the same number of matches, then the total number of votes each character received will be used as a tiebreaker.
That gets us to ten characters advancing to the elimination stage, but we still have six more slots in the bracket. Those slots will be filled by the six characters who received the most total votes* without winning their group. Seeding for the elimination bracket will also be done by total number of votes received in the group stage.
This means that (for example) being in the same group as an extremely popular character won't automatically doom your favorite. It also means that collecting as many votes as possible matters, even if a character gets a bunch of those votes while losing.
Polls will last one week and will happen when they happen; I can't promise any particular schedule but I'll try not to post an overwhelming number at once or go too long without posting any. Groups are listed under the cut.
*Since 41 characters qualified for the tournament, Group A has five characters instead of four, and each character will be in four head-to-head matches instead of three. When comparing the total number of votes received, I'll adjust the Group A totals to take that into account. (Functionally, I'll be comparing the average number of votes per match, but total votes sounds more impressive.)
GROUP A: Rain Flaherty (Rain) Kylie Coven (Rain) Elle Argent (Heartstopper) Lucas (High Class Homos) Luck (Tiger, Tiger)
GROUP B: Eddie Kaspbrak (Out of the Blue) Lucy Marlowe (Never Satisfied) Fenic (Goodbye to Halos) Johnny Summer (Lavender Jack)
GROUP C: Space Dread (Val and Isaac) Max Owen (Magical Boy) Knife (Feast for a King) Claire Augustus (Questionable Content)
GROUP D: Zoe Blecher (Sleepless Domain) Rosemaster (Cucumber Quest) Bacon (Cucumber Quest) Julie (Charity Case)
GROUP E: Cheryl (I Want to Be a Cute Anime Girl) Maggie (Clover & Cutlass) Eliza Swift (Widdershins) Sulla Pinsky (O Human Star)
GROUP F: Penny Spender (Paranatural) Vermillion Gacutan (Earth 2068) Gaueko (Nasty Red Dogs) Xada (LoveBot)
GROUP G: Tedd Verres (El Goonish Shive) Ellen Dunkel (El Goonish Shive) Merlow the Rose (Court of Roses) Chau Le (Shootaround)
GROUP H: Dainix (Aurora) Zhusen (Experience Boost) White Chain (Kill Six Billion Demons) Lupe Jara (Four Leaf)
GROUP I: Teige Carroll (White Noise) Yoshi (White Noise) Vaarsuvius (The Order of the Stick) Eri McCure (Friends With Benefits)
GROUP J: Carla Rutten (Dumbing of Age) Davepeta (Homestuck) Fleet (Rectify) Magpie (Sister Claire)

I have to be honest, after everything I heard I went into Lone Trail anticipating Muelsyse character assassination-- nay, *annihilation*, for the sake of Doctor-sexual fanservice and I was ready to be disappointed. But having finished reading Lone Trail myself now... What? Her homescreen lines are utter horseshit, I completely agree, but her actual character writing in Lone Trail fits that really good analysis post by meeblo so accurately that I can't believe meeblo didn't read LT before writing
"The more I think about Lone Trail the less I like how they executed the story."
So, let me preface this with with preemptive TL;DR: If you are a fan of Silence as a character, you probably really enjoy Lone Trail.
If you are a fan of any other character, especially Muelsyse, and ESPECIALLY if you don't like or don't care for self-insert pandering, you're likely disappointed and/or frustrated with Lone Trail. I am the latter.
Let me just copypaste what my friend has to say (plus my own replies and commentary) since they can articulate the feeling better than I can:
I'm sorry. I just can't imagine a world where Saria, who means so much to Muelsyse, is nearly assassinated and in awful shape, and *she knows that* and is like "wassup doctor, heard Saria's in trouble but lets hang out"
Me: Exactly. This does not make sense with what we know of their relationship. Especially since she's later worried sick/almost breaks down at the thought of losing Saria for real
I'm just going through the story and so much of it doesn't make sense to me. And it's (I'm not done but getting there) just *so depressing* how much of the event is eaten up with kind of pointless/uninteresting doctor babysitting? She should be front & center in all of this. There's so much to work with and play with but so much of it does not make *any sense*. Muelsyse did not need to be hobbled by this. Hell, so far as I've read, Doctor didn't need to be there or could have done it on their own. Fucking frustrating.
Me: I'm not that familiar with Guide Ahead, but I can't help but imagine how much better/more concise Lone Trail could've been had they handled Samuelsten in a similar way to GA's central trio. Don't shove Muelsyse to the side, make her an active agent in the story, with the people who matter to her
I mean I’ve made it to CW-7 and as someone who’s in the middle of all of this (often by design) I’m puzzled that she’s one of the least interesting parts of the event? Kristen, HoHo, Nasti, Jara are great. We know why it matters to her but she’s on the fringes the entire time. This should have been done like guide ahead but guide ahead was much better and leaner by virtue of not needing to dedicate half the fucking event to talk about how great and interesting the doctor is. There’s no reason doctor couldn’t have been with Kal’tsit the entire time. That would actually make sense. But nope.
"It's Saria you want to see, It's Kristen who you're looking for" but why don't we just stick you with Doctor the entire fucking event and you can act like you're just on a little adventure. Cannot believe I have to rely on the furniture to give what the event should have.
This might be a controversial take, but I wish all this giant lore dump with Doctor, Priestess and Kal'tsit had been relegated to another vignette or main chapter with just mentions of Kirsten/Kristen and Rhine Lab. It's taking up much too much of Rhine Lab's event. Instead of *way too many flashbacks* with Doctor/Kal'tsit/ whoever, we could have had this building up Saria/ Kirsten/Muelsyse with their past instead of the one 3 second glimpse we got. I am so mad at this stupid fucking decision. Rhine Lab Event: featuring Rhine Lab as glorified cameos
Reply: Yeah its so annoying. It takes up sooo much god damn space and for what? And for what ? It doesn’t belong. I swear to god i wish we focused on, idk, the main relationship between saria and kirsten (and mumu but my faith is lost) instead of kirsten only showing up at the very end
Yeah, I'm sure glad FERDINAND got the most screen time out of all Rhine Lab. Just *what*. But the lore dump, while *fine* is just fucking egregious and does not belong here. This could have been referenced elsewhere and they could have fleshed out everyone else.
I have finished Lone Trail! Cumulatively, I love about two chapters worth of it! I definitely had high expectations but even if I'd had mediocre expectations I would have been let down. Not enough of the Rhine Lab founders, needless lore dump that could have gone elsewhere. It felt fragmented and like a hodge podge of things. Saria, Muelsyse and Kirsten felt like cameos in the entire event. And I'm sure the intention of this was to elevate just how goddamn special the doctor is, but the way it was written, it felt like no one at Rhine Lab gives a single solitary fuck about Muelsyse in any real capacity. These are the people she's had and adores. Yes, her loneliness was a sort of focus of the event, but the way it plays out does make it feel like "yeah, you're right to be lonely. Thank god for doctor!"
So much of my irritation is not only was she reduced to a love interest for Doctor, treated poorly by everyone at RL, she had zero agency in the whole event. She really was just floating passively for the most part. Muelsyse in Lone Trail: 1. Looks for Kirsten/ doesn't find Kirsten/ abandoned & not said goodbye to by Kirsten. 2. Looks for Saria (eventually) stopped by Saria. Saves Saria, doesn't talk to her again/ is not acknowledged by Saria. 3. Nasti tells her she's a crybaby & to get lost I mean, it really is no wonder she wanted to off herself. She built Rhine Lab with them from the beginning and this is how the event chooses for all these people to treat her? It's unbelievable.
Me: All that to make Doctor look better in comparison, right? It's jarring bc it's such a far cry from the brief concern Saria showed towards her in DV and doesn't even follow up with her claim to want to save Muelsyse in LT. Where's the consistency? She remembers that Mumu is fragile, but we don't even get a scene or mention of checking up on her after crashing back down to earth?
At least in Kristen's case, she remembered Muelsyse exists afterwards with the plantlife onboard, but it's not even presented as wrong or a character flaw how Saria ignores Muelsyse in the end, even though she literally saved her life. Just... nothing. This is the defender who protects others? The one that she fell for?
Yeah “when you’re emotional you forget that you’re fragile” & okay this is a devastating day for her so fuck her very much! No need to check on how she’s doing losing a long time friend and colleague, how she was in a thing that literally crashed but she saved *her*. And this isn’t even about Samuels in particular! This is how she was treated by the people with an established history that matter to her. Obviously the game is pandering, but given how literally everyone in the game, from the actions she can see, treats her like she is disposable trash. It’s no fucking wonder she’d be like “oh wow doctor!” Because at least they treat her like a human being who has feelings and who hurts? The fact that Saria doesn’t even reach out, that she has treated her like a stranger for the most part doesn’t track. Why did they make Muelsyse the “hero/ star” of the event banner? She’s forgotten and mistreated by everyone, gets almost zero game content, her file and voice lines are a mess and she doesn’t influence the story in any way at all. This event as a Rhine Lab story was trash.
Me: It felt so much more like a "Silence" story with Rhine Lab as window dressing. They clearly didn't have any editors around because how can you SAY that these people matter to Muelsyse but then not PROVE it? The lack of care, the disrespect towards her and other characters in relation to her is just astonishing
I like Silence a lot but wtf was she leading this? The whole thing is the conflict with Sarsten w/ Muelsyse in the middle. She got a new outfit, talked to Parvis, rehashed a conversation w Saria for the 10th time? This should have been all Muelsyse / Saria/ Kirsten but they barely existed in the event. And who the fuck polled whoever else to decide that Ferdinand and the creep Josh should get the rest of the time! Why so much build up with Jara / her closeness to Kirsten to not have any interaction with them? WTF were they doing.
I could probably write an essay about all the things I felt didn't work as a Rhine Lab event. This might have worked better as a vignette just to keep it tidy. But I think the other thing for me is that… hrm this event almost assumes that all you've seen of Silence is the manhua and thus wow! Growth! She loses the glasses and gets a new style to show that off. But the Silence of this event is the Silence we've had in the game since day one. The one in Mansfield and in Dorothy's Vision who is kind of certain about what is wrong and what is right and will stand up for that. So to me there wasn't any growth there. Because we'd already seen that growth/ that was the person we've known since the start of the game. A lot of this event kind of relies on… either not having read the manhua or exclusively having read the manhua. Because if not for the manhua you don't know/ understand why there's that Kirsten/Saria divide and how much it means. It's all very weird.
And kind of to add to my little rant… DV and the manhua allude to Muelsyse being extremely close to Kirsten and being her sidekick. But in neither the manhua or any of the events do we see any of that. Instead we get Nasti (who I like a lot) in that role and--- I just don't get it. You'll be less disappointed if you don't read the manhua. lol A ton of Muelsyse's character development and her relationship with Saria is highlighted there and this event just kind of decides to burn all of that to the ground. But if you want to see why the final chapter matters/ is special/ yes, read it.
Me: Nasti's in the role bc we had to have our self-insert fix with the hot new playable op :/
yeah. with the same motivations. but all of that should have rightfully been hers I really do think they just gave Muelsyse's role to Nasti And the cherry on top of all of it was at the end when Muelsyse is like "Huh did the three of us actually dance together or did I make all of that up?" I just can't with that final slap in the face to Muelsyse and all of them. Like her talk about loneliness is fine and well done and the little history but so much left a lot of questions.
Me: yeah… it's just. wow. there were nuggets and seeds planted that had potential, but they didn't bother to actually cultivate and develop those relationships and dynamics at which point why even include them at all
Yeah, I’ll include that in my rant, but my last point on that end is Saria’s “I would do it over again” doesn’t make sense if you haven’t read the manhua— and just doesn’t jive with what is presented in the events with her that is much more clinical. And I’ve said this about multiple things— but a story should be able to stand on its own without having needed to read a manhua for additional context— and especially when having read the manhua you’re left with ??????

how much of lone trail would change if silence were able to turn her head almost 360° like a real life owl
probably the fact that she would have freaked out the guard asking for her identity at the start, so Jara wouldn't have come to help her, so she wouldn't have got cool drip and cool drones
but as much as i see people talk about this headcanon, i dont share it, just like the "owl ears" (Google "owl ears" to see what I talk about but CW for extremely deranging), because there's a fine line between "funny goofy aah" and "what the fuck"

what was your first ship, and what fandom is it from?
what’s your favorite canon moment of Temily?
rate Jara from 1-10 and explain why 😌
I honestly don't remember the first pairing I looked at and thought, "they should kiss." The first ship where I was actively involved in a fandom community and talking to other shippers about it was SwanQueen from Once Upon a Time. That was really fun for a while, until I went through an acrimonious breakup with the girl I watched OUAT with, and it kind of ruined the whole show for me for several years. 😬
My favorite canon moment of Temily is when they're drinking wine together on the balcony, and they're not in work mode, just blowing off steam together. It's such a fun moment where you really get to see how much they genuinely just like each other and enjoy each other's company, which is the foundation of any good relationship!
Jara is 9 out of 10. There's so much there to explore, so many great canon moments between the two of them, so many jumping off points for in-universe fic ideas. And they're so hot together! But the only reason it's not 10 out of 10 is because you can't have monogamous Jara AND monogamous Temily in the same universe without a lot of messy drama, and Temily is and always will be my OTP.

i could take or leave ferdinand but silence imo deserved her spot in the event. the rl plot, as it was known to rhodes operators, involved her, even if she was just a rank and file researcher. she may not be a saria or kristen, but if it takes her to pay attention to the collateral damage, then that's what's important, isn't it? like the dynamic is saria and silence, and i think saria herself might not have been able to carry it without heavily rewriting the event to feature kristen more. could they have done that, maybe, but they didn't, and i don't like her so i'm honestly glad.
In reference to this post.
Let me be clear, aside from the Muelsyse and Doctor thing I think all the parts of the event make sense to be there. My issue with it is with how much focus the event gave them.
Silence being a part of it makes sense, but the camera following her around as much as it does is simply not necessary for her to go through her arc for this event.
Silence is one of the most well established characters in the game, she sets Mansfield Break into motion and gets pretty well characterized there, she plays a major part in Dorothy's Vision, she's a main character in the Rhine Labs manhua. We know who she is, we know what she's about, we just need to know where she is and what she's doing. I feel like she could have gotten about as much focus as Ifrit or Rosmontis did and it would have been fine.
As for Saria, she doesn't need to carry the event, she just needed to be allowed to talk to people in more scenes, like Muelsyse, Jara, Nasti, or, yes, Kristen. All the directors and their dynamics are underdeveloped in this event, except Ferdinand for some fucking reason (we know who this guy is from Dorothy's Vision, give us a couple of scenes with him and Blake and move on).
It just feels like the screen time allocation was too much on the surrounding stories and not enough on the core Rhine Labs directors story.
