The #HondaPrelude was never about straight-line speed, though each subsequent generation was faster and faster still than the original rather sedate Mk1. The Mk2 #Prelude became the definitive version of the car, a sharp-suited lightweight GT with hidden headlights and lithe handling. The Mk3, introduced in April of 1987, picked up the baton there and added the Prelude’s greatest single innovation up to that time - four wheel steering. #Honda was the first of the #Japanese marques to reach the market with four-wheel steering, but the others were working on it. Power outputs of this generation would seem small by today’s standards - the ’88 Si came with a 135-hp B20A, but thanks to innovations like this, and Honda’s emphasis on light weight, they were able to use every last bit of power effectively. The #4WS system was done through a mechanical linkage (other makes used electronic sensors) - when the steering wheel was turned only slightly, the rear wheels would steer in the same direction as the fronts, resulting in quick, stable lane changes. Indeed, engineering sold the idea to management on the safety advantages that this could produce. Turning the wheel a little more would point the rears straight ahead. Full lock caused the rear wheels to turn in the opposite direction to the fronts to make parking easier. The regular Prelude was a sharp handler to begin with and it seemed like the 4WS would only improve that tendency - but in reality the difference wasn’t significant enough to overcome the cost of the option on North American cars - $1300 on the already $16,000 #PreludeSi. In #Japan, buyers flocked to it - 80% of Preludes were so equipped. In North America it was the opposite - only a fraction of U.S. Preludes got it. This generation didn’t sell quite as well as the Mk2 mainly due to increases in price and the general move away from coupes, but it still did very well for Honda - they were still popular cars and owing to their high quality, there are many survivors. Mazda’s original #RX7, new for 1978, was a major success for the brand when it badly needed one - with #Mazda on the ropes in the late 1970s after a big splash of growth prior to the Opec crisis. The #FBRX7 and the little #MazdaGLC put the company back on the map after sales had fallen from 100,000 a year in 1973 to 50,000 in 1977 - a time when most of it’s #Japanese competitors were growing. Even though the FB was popular all through it’s run, by 1985 it was time for a refresh - and the wedgy 70s FB gave way to the smooth, Porsche-like #80s #FC late that year. In 1986, 86,000 customers lined up for an #FCRX7 - more than a quarter of Mazda’s overall U.S. sales that year. The FC offered the injected 13B that premiered on the 1984 RX-7 GSL-SE standard, in N/A and #turbocharged form. At home, #JDM RX-7s came only as Turbos, but in other markets a non-turbo was offered to expand sales. It also borrowed a concept from Nissan, adding a tiny back seat option for a 2+2, not that adults would want to spend much time back there. Like most #eighties Japanese cars, the new RX-7 was a high-tech machine - speed-variable power steering, variable damping activated by a dash switch (a sport mode) and, of course, an injected, turbocharged #Rotary engine. Although it had gained about 250 lbs., the FC lost little of the excitement of the original, and sales were good through 1989 (when the Miata arrived). There was also a convertible RX-7 in this generation for the first time. Like the other growing #JapaneseSportsCars, the FC was seen as a little more of a GT and a little less of an outright sports car, but comparisons with the Porsche 944 and Mitsubishi Starion didn’t hurt, and the FC was more solid than the Starion (despite the fragility of earlier Rotaries) and much cheaper than the Porsche ($19K for a loaded RX-7 GXL, $25K for a base 944) - a sweet spot to be in. Later on, Rotary tuners milked huge power from the tiny 13B, making for very fast FCs, though they were often overshadowed by the 1990s FD - an out-and-out thoroughbred.
