I wanted to take some time today to remember 3 people.
As many may know, at least if you're Jewish, today is Yom HaShoah. Through the past 2 years, I've lit 3 candles to remember 3 Holocaust victims. Every time I do, I take some time to research them on various databases, so I can learn a little about them. I don't want them to be forgotten. And in this post I want to tell you about them. If discussions of the Shoah might trigger you, don't feel bad skipping this post. Whoever is able will remember them, make sure you take care of yourself first and foremost. The rest of the post will be under the Read More section so you're free to skip if you need.
🕯️Eliezer Kofler
Sadly, not much is known about Eliezer Kofler. We don't know when or where he was born, we don't know when or where he died. We know that before the war he probably lived in Stryj (then Poland, now Ukraine). During the war, we know he was in Poland, we don't know where or at which point. Nothing else is known. Since I could only find him in some databases, it is possible his name has been spelled in different ways that I'm not aware.
Eliezer Kofler was murdered during the Shoah. But he was not forgotten. May his memory be a blessing.
🕯️Julie Fischerova
Tumblr media
Julie Fischerova was born in 1884, on the 12th of January. She lived in Prague (then still in Czechoslovakia), and had a son, Herbert Fischer, in 1915. She was transported to Terezín, a ghetto and concentration camp in Czechoslovakia, on 16/07/1942. Her son was also transported there on 20/11/1942. Herbert was, from Terezín, transported to Auschwitz on 20/01/1943, and Julie suffered the same fate on 15/05/1944. She died at approximately 59 years old.
Julie Fischerova was murdered during the Shoah, and so was her son Herbert. But they were not forgotten. May their memory be a blessing.
🕯️Meta Leiter
Not much is known about Meta Leiter either. Meta is predominantly a girl's name, but in the documents I found of Meta in various archives, their gender is always marked as Unknown, and as such I will be referring to them in a genderneutral way.
Meta Leiter was born in 1888, exact date and place unknown. We know that, in the beginning of the war, they lived in Munich, Germany. From there, they were on 24/07/1942 transported to Terezín, just a few days after Julie Fischerova was. From Terezín, they were transported to Auschwitz on 16/10/1944, where they died at approximately 55 years old.
Meta Leiter was murdered during the Shoah. But they were not forgotten. May their memory be a blessing.
It's painful, but a big honor to be able to remember them and keep their memory alive. I did my best to make these memorials as respectfully as I could with all the information I could find in various sources. If I got something wrong, or if you know anything more about them, feel free to reach out.
If you'd also like to be assigned with one or more names to remember and honor, you can do so at Illuminate the Past. Please don't forget them, write them down or take a screenshot. I wish all of you a meaningful Yom HaShoah and thank you for reading this post.

These are some facts and curiosities about Karl Brandt, the head of the Aktion T4:
He was born on 8th of January, 1904 in Alsace.
He began his studies in 1924, at the University of Jena, and in 1928, at the age of 24, he became a doctor.
A young doctor when he joined the Nazi party in 1932, he placed his hopes in the party for the recovery of the Alsace region, which in the meantime had returned under French rule (in 1919). A very important role in the formation of his thought was played by an Alsatian like him, the Nobel Peace Prize winner Albert Schweitzer, whose work as a missionary in Africa he however could not join for political and military reasons.
In 1934, at the age of just 29, he became the Führer's personal doctor . The conflict between the two was always quite heated. In fact, while Hitler's official doctor, Morell, was considered a charlatan, Karl Brandt was the scientific figure and traditional doctor of the Reich.
He was the man chosen by Hitler as the initiator of the T4 Program (the killing of disabled Germans) and as his supreme medical authority.
With these authorities, he was involved in roles of maximum responsibility in the sadly famous "scientific" experiments on human beings, including the one in which he himself asked the ReichsFührer, Heinrich Himmler, for authorization to carry out inoculations of the epidemic hepatitis virus in human beings.
He and Albert Speer were not only close friends, but also acted to save each other's lives. In 1944, Brandt used his enormous powers as General Commissioner of Medical Services and his friends to save the already ill Speer from Himmler's assassination attempt. Subsequently, on April 16, 1945, Brandt was arrested by the Gestapo and sentenced to death, as he was accused of high treason against the Führer. But on May 2 he was released by order of Karl Dönitz. In fact, upon hearing the news of his friend and colleague's arrest, Speer had the urgency to mobilize various people to save his life.
Brandt entered into what many think of as an adopted son relationship with the Führer himself.
François Bayle, a French psychologist who interviewed him repeatedly at the time of the Nuremberg trials, described him thus:
«Rich, vigorous, but undisciplined, pugnacious and childish personality made vulnerable by his ambition and pride. Possessed of a vivid intelligence, but little logical clarity and much imagination, which can easily be influenced and led astray. His character could also be influenced, just as easily."
He was tried from 9 December 1946 to 19 August 1947 with twenty-two other doctors at the Nuremberg Palace of Justice
Karl Brandt was found guilty of war crimes, crimes against humanity and membership of an organization declared criminal by the International Military Tribunal and sentenced to death by hanging.

Five Human Skeletons Found Outside House of Nazi Leader Hermann Göring
Archaeologists have unearthed the skeletons of five people, missing their hands and feet, at a former Nazi military base in Poland.
They were discovered at a Nazi command center known as the Wolf’s Lair in Gierloz, northeastern Poland, after the group unearthed a fragment of human skull during a dig on February 24 and alerted local authorities, who decided to carry out further excavations.
The remains belonged to three adults, a teenager and a newborn baby, according to a statement from the Latebra Foundation, a historical organization based in the Polish city of Gdansk, published Thursday.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The five bodies were arranged near each other, facing in the same direction, outside a house occupied by Nazi commander Hermann Göring, an ace fighter pilot during World War I who became one of the most powerful Nazi leaders in World War II and a close friend of Adolf Hitler.
Alongside them were burned boards and the remains of sewage infrastructure, but there were no traces of clothing, according to the statement.
Adrian Kostrzewa, a member of the foundation’s board of directors, said that the team initially thought they were digging up an old bathroom when they found pipes under the ground.
However, they then found ashes and a burned key, before he found the skull fragment.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
“It was very surprising,” he said.
The foundation is waiting to hear the results of a police investigation into the remains, and many questions remain unanswered.
“There are many theories (about) why they do not have hands and feet,” said Kostrzewa. “Right now, it’s very hard to say.”
An important next step is to find out the age of the remains using radio carbon dating, he added.
Deliberately built miles from civilization in the forests of northeastern Poland, the Wolf’s Lair was the Nazis’ 6.5-square-kilometer (2.5-square-mile) Eastern Front headquarters.
The base was one of the largest of its kind in Europe, according to the foundation.
“The uniqueness of this discovery lies in the fact that the bodies were found on the premises of the most heavily guarded complex of the Third Reich,” the statement reads.
Hitler spent nearly three years there in total.
The fortress was the site of Operation Valkyrie, an assassination attempt against Hitler in July 1944, before it was destroyed in January 1945 to prevent it from falling into the hands of the advancing Soviet army, according to the foundation.

Queen Victoria’s painting of her daughter Princess Beatrice, 15 July 1860.
Victoria (Alexandrina Victoria; 24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death in 1901.
Her reign of 63 years and 216 days is known as the Victorian era and was longer than any of her predecessors.
Princess Beatrice VA, CI, GCVO, GBE, RRC, GCStJ (Beatrice Mary Victoria Feodore; 14 April 1857 – 26 October 1944), later Princess Henry of Battenberg, was the fifth daughter and youngest child of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert.
Princess Beatrice was also the last of Queen Victoria's children to die, nearly 66 years after the first, her elder sister Alice.

24 January 1972 Japanese soldier Shoichi Yokoi was found hiding in the Guam jungle.
Initially, Yokoi served with the 29th Infantry Division in Manchukuo. In 1943, he was transferred to the 38th Regiment in the Mariana Islands and arrived on Guam in February 1943. When American forces captured the island in the 1944 Battle of Guam, Yokoi went into hiding with nine other Japanese soldiers. Seven of the original ten eventually moved away and only three remained in the region. These men separated, but visited each other periodically until about 1964, when the other two died in a flood. For the last eight years, Yokoi lived alone. He survived by hunting, primarily at night. He also used native plants to make clothes, bedding, and storage implements, which he carefully hid in his cave.
On the evening of 24 January 1972, Yokoi was discovered by two local men checking shrimp traps along a small river on Talofofo. They had assumed Yokoi was a villager from Talofofo, but he thought his life was in danger and attacked them. They managed to subdue him and carried him out of the jungle.
Yokoi later said that he expected the local men to kill him at first but was surprised when instead they allowed him to eat hot soup at their home before turning him over to the authorities. He was in relatively good health, but slightly anemic due to a lack of salt in his diet according to doctors at Guam Memorial Hospital.
"It is with much embarrassment that I return," he said upon his return to Japan in March 1972. The remark quickly became a popular saying in Japan. He had known since 1952 that World War II had ended but feared coming out of hiding, explaining that "We Japanese soldiers were told to prefer death to the disgrace of getting captured alive."

A Life of Dedicated Service: Remembering Brigadier General Charles McGee
Jan 18, 2022
By Michael Hankins
Brig. Gen. Charles E. McGee, the eldest of the surviving Tuskegee Airmen, passed away on January 16, 2022. His life of dedicated service included flying combat aircraft in three major wars—a feat that was unthinkable before his career began, when the US military banned African Americans from combat flying roles.

Brig. Gen. Charles McGee speaks to a group of visitors at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center.
Born in Chicago in 1919, McGee spent his formative years as an Eagle Scout and worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps before studying engineering at the University of Illinois, where he also participated in the ROTC program. On his 22nd birthday, Japanese aircraft bombed Pearl Harbor, and the next day American officially entered World War II. After hearing of the US Army Air Corps’ new program to allow African Americans to train as combat pilots, McGee enlisted. Before leaving for training, McGee married his partner, Frances Nelson. Two days after their ceremony, McGee received his orders and became an aviation cadet.
McGee had experienced discrimination where he grew up in the northern United States, but noted that in Alabama, where Tuskegee Air Field was located, the racism was much more blatant. “Back in those days, the city of Tuskegee was off limits, and the sheriff wasn’t a friend. You didn’t buy gas or walk down the street in certain areas,” McGee said. But flying lifted his spirits. Even his early training rides sometimes became spiritual experiences. “Flying up to 45,000 feet to watch the sun set and stars come out,” he said. “It makes you realize we human beings are just one small aspect in a mighty grand universe.”

After earning his wings and 2nd Lieutenant’s commission in June 1943, McGee joined the 302nd Fighter Squadron, part of the racially segregated 332nd Fighter Group, one of the units of the Tuskegee Airmen during World War II. Stationed in Italy, McGee flew P-39 Airacobras, P-47 Thunderbolts, and P-51 Mustangs on attack missions and bomber escorts. On August 24, 1944, McGee was escorting a group of B-24 Liberator bombers over Czechoslovakia while flying his P-51, named Kitten, partially after his nickname for his wife and partially as a reference to his crew chief, who “kept that engine purring like a kitten.” A group of German fighters pounced on the bombers, and McGee engaged, chasing a Fw 190 into a dive before shooting it down.
McGee ended his combat time in World War II after 136 missions, and then became an instructor for the 477th Bombardment Group (Medium), a group of African Americans training to become B-25 Mitchell crews.
Despite his decorated service, McGee faced harsh discrimination upon returning home. “In Europe, I was Charles McGee,” he said. “When you came down the gangplank in America, it’s, ‘Oh, you’re black.’ It was blacks this way, whites that way.” Even when serving in the United States, McGee was forced to leave his family behind because African Americans were not allowed to buy or rent homes in the areas around the bases to which he was assigned.

USAF pilot Charles McGee during the Korean War in 1951. McGee was a Tuskegee Airman during World War II and was promoted to Brigadier General in 2020.
When the Korean War began in 1950, McGee had recently become the base operations officer at Clark Field in the Philippines. He quickly joined the 67th Fighter Bomber Squadron and flew his favorite aircraft, the P-51 (now redesignated F-51) Mustang on 100 combat missions. After Korea, McGee held a number of command positions around the US Air Force, including commanding the 44th Fighter Bomber Squadron, flying F-80 Shooting Stars.
By 1967, with the Vietnam War increasing in intensity, the Air Force assigned McGee to command the 16th Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron at Tan Son Nhut Air Base in South Vietnam. Flying RF-4 Phantom II jet fighters on dangerous photo reconnaissance missions, McGee completed 172 combat missions and earned his first Legion of Merit.
After returning to several other leadership positions in the Air Force, McGee retired from service as a Colonel in 1973. With a total of 409 combat missions across three wars, he had earned the Legion of Merit twice, earned three Distinguished Flying Crosses, and was awarded a Bronze Star, among many other awards. After retirement, he went back to college to earn a degree and continued to serve in a variety of leadership positions, including the Boy Scouts, while helping to create and promote the Tuskegee Airmen Inc. He also made time to visit us at the National Air and Space Museum, signing books, speaking at family day programs, and participating in lectures. His willingness to share his story provided our visitors with a first-hand account of history, and many walked away moved by the change to hear from and speak to McGee.

In 2020, McGee received a promotion to Brigadier General. Then-Chief of Staff of the Air Force, General David Goldfein, noted the importance of recognizing McGee’s legacy: “Charles McGee is a genuine American hero whose courage in combat helped save a nation, and whose legacy is felt to this day across the entire US Air Force.”
Looking back, McGee and his fellow Tuskegee Airmen were a powerful force for change, helping to increase the effectiveness of the US military through a more equitable use of personnel—but McGee did not pursue his career out of a sense of advocacy. “It was more about wanting to do our best and accomplish the mission we were assigned,” he said. “We just wanted to be part of what the country was all about at the time. We could’ve said, ‘They don’t like us. They don’t want us’ and not served our country. We chose to serve, and it allowed our Air Force to see what we could accomplish, and ... bring about an important change in the country.”
