Questions for Dr. Laura
Michael LuscombeNovember 17, 2014  · In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance.  The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It's funny, as well as informative: Dear Dr. Laura: Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your show, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can. When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate. I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them. 1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations.     A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians? 2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her? 3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24.     The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence. 4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9.      The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them? 5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death.      Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it? 6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination? 7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here? 8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die? 9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves? 10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14) I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help. Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. Your adoring fan. James M. Kauffman, Ed.D. Professor Emeritus, Dept. Of Curriculum, Instruction, and Special Education University of Virginia (It would be a damn shame if we couldn't own a Canadian)

“Men’s Police Court - Pleads To Retain Shirt On His Back,” Toronto Star. March 2, 1932. Page 2. ---- Fears He’ll Be Like South Sea Islander If Stolen Goods Returned --- Youths in their early twenties, Louis Ryan and General Gagnon acknowledged breaking into the Navy League of Canada and stealing two Ross rifles, some naval badges and a pair of sailor’s pants. Detective Breen stated $50 damage was also done by the accused, a broken rifle rack, a smashed door and a crashed-in window, being included in a general wreckage. Magistrate Jones remanded the accused in custody till March 9 for sentence.
Joseph Brown and Joe Costandino, youthful burglars, arrested by Officers Barber, Gadd and Cregge, pleaded guilty to housebreaking, numbers 45 St. Clair Ave., 101 and 80 Lawton Blvd., and 391 Sherbourne St. being the homes entered. A quantity of clothing, jewelry and other articles recovered by the police were produced.
When apprehended Brown had a complete set of evidence on his person, a doctor’s shirt, another victim’s cuff links and a third’s trousers being identified in court.
The bench ordered return of recovered goods and remanded both accused in custody for a week for sentence.
Brown protested at his worship’s order which threatened to reduce his wardrobe to that of a south sea islander.
‘We don’t want to take the shirt off his back. He says those shoes and scarf are his,’ stated the crown.
Dr. Edwards then entered the witness box and identified and claimed the clothing under dispute.
‘These things are mine,’ he said, ‘I bought them in Chicago.’
‘Has this young man the effrontery to stand in the dock and try and claim clothing he knows is not his,’ stated the bench. ‘I will deal with him now.’
Counsel T. O’Connor immediately withdrew any claim by his client for the clothing and the bench abstained from the threatened summary treatment.
Had Toothache, Begged Charged with being disorderly, Michael Fallon and Charles Crook acknowledged fighting on the sidewalk. The bench fined them $5 or ten days each. Crook paid and Fallon went to jail.
Vagrants, found begging on the streets, George Ferguson and Robert Glennish were fined $10 and costs or 30 days each. The latter a Finlander, explained he had a toothache and had sought sufficient money to finance the process of removal of the offending molar. The bench decided that this could be done in Governor Harry Denning’s fine new surgery in the Don jail.
Drunks fined to-day were: William Bennett and Frank McCarron, $50 or a month, and Joseph McAvoy, James Kilmartin and John A. Carter, $10 or ten days.
Passed Bad Cheque Archibald Luscombe and Fred H. Lasher pleaded guilty to charges of conspiracy, forgery, and uttering, branches of the Bank of Nova Scotia and the Dominion bank being the recipients of their cheques. Police officers told how the accused, under aliases, had presented the cheques and some confusion resulted as to the extent of the respective guilt of the accused.
‘Your worship may we change our plea,’ requested Lasher. ‘We are willing to plead guilty but we would like to know just what we are pleading guilty to. If you will give us a week’s remand we might find out just how we stand.’
The bench granted the requested remand, allowed alteration of the plea, and requested the probation officer to look up the record of the accused.
Didn’t Like the Food ‘He told me he was not satisfied with the food and lodging and had decided to start something as a protest,’ said Officer Wilson, 431, when Thomas Cooper appeared, charged with doing malicious damage to the House of Industry, and with assaulting night superintendent.
‘He picked up a chair and started to smash all the windows, and then he took it to me,’ explained Superintendent Hawkins, producing fragments of the chair.
‘Look here, my man, if the House of Industry is not good enough for you, I can send you somewhere else,’ said his worship.
‘That’s all right with me.’
‘Very well, then, you will be fined $20 and costs or two months for malicious damage, and $10 and costs or one month for the assault. If you do not pay your fine, that means three months at Burwash, where the benches are bolted to the floor and you cannot pick them up to smash the windows with them,’ his worship concluded.
Can of Alcohol ‘I remember you. You used to work for Rocco Perri, didn’t you,’ said Crown Attorney Malone, as Walter Pawluh descended the stairway that leads to the cells after being fined $100 and costs, or three months, for being in illegal possession of a can of alcohol. Accused told his worship that he had found the an in a lane off Spadina Ave. The bench doubted it.
‘And what did you do, stand around and scream?’ inquired Crown Attorney Malone of a young lady witness, when Parker Scott and Leonard Johnson appeared charged with assault.
Three witnesses testified how Scott had assaulted a young man named Gordon, who was escorting his sisters home. Johnson was said to have stood around, and to have urged Scott ‘to go to it.’
On parole already, Scott was promptly sent to jail for three months, while Johnson, a first offender, was fined $25 and costs, with a month’s alternative.
Charged with attempting to take his own life, Bruce Powley, aged 30, was remanded for a week for mental examination at the psychiatric hospital.
Robert C. Levesconte, charged with theft, and many times remanded, appeared again. The charge was withdrawn when plaintiff failed to appear.

Biden Administration Ramps Up Debt Relief Program to Help Black Farmers Representative James E. Clyburn, a South Carolina Democrat who played an influential role in helping Mr. Biden secure the party’s presidential nomination, has also been a major voice highlighting the experience of Black farmers and helped drive the stimulus provisions, according to congressional staff aides. The funding aims to address longstanding problems with discrimination at the Agriculture Department — particularly its refusal to grant farmers of color the same access to capital that helped tide over white farmers during difficult periods in history. Minority farmers have confronted other issues, like a lack of access to legal services that have complicated farm inheritances, and a lack of public investment in rural communities and on reservations, including in the water supply and roads and transportation to get farm products to market. Those factors led to a substantial loss of land. While the number of farmers in the United States has fallen sharply over the past century as farms mechanized and more people found work in factories and offices, Black farmers suffered disproportionately. According to Agriculture Department data, in 1920, the United States had 925,708 Black farmers, making up 14 percent of farmers in the country. But by 2017, only 35,470 of the nation’s more than two million farms were run by Black producers, or 1.7 percent. Joe Patterson, 70, whose family has farmed in the Mississippi Delta for decades, said discriminatory lending had forced many Black farmers around him out of business over the years, and led to some lean times for his own family. Frequently Asked Questions About the New Stimulus Package How big are the stimulus payments in the bill, and who is eligible? The stimulus payments would be $1,400 for most recipients. Those who are eligible would also receive an identical payment for each of their children. To qualify for the full $1,400, a single person would need an adjusted gross income of $75,000 or below. For heads of household, adjusted gross income would need to be $112,500 or below, and for married couples filing jointly that number would need to be $150,000 or below. To be eligible for a payment, a person must have a Social Security number. Read more. What would the relief bill do about health insurance? Buying insurance through the government program known as COBRA would temporarily become a lot cheaper. COBRA, for the Consolidated Omnibus Budget Reconciliation Act, generally lets someone who loses a job buy coverage via the former employer. But it’s expensive: Under normal circumstances, a person may have to pay at least 102 percent of the cost of the premium. Under the relief bill, the government would pay the entire COBRA premium from April 1 through Sept. 30. A person who qualified for new, employer-based health insurance someplace else before Sept. 30 would lose eligibility for the no-cost coverage. And someone who left a job voluntarily would not be eligible, either. Read more What would the bill change about the child and dependent care tax credit? This credit, which helps working families offset the cost of care for children under 13 and other dependents, would be significantly expanded for a single year. More people would be eligible, and many recipients would get a bigger break. The bill would also make the credit fully refundable, which means you could collect the money as a refund even if your tax bill was zero. “That will be helpful to people at the lower end” of the income scale, said Mark Luscombe, principal federal tax analyst at Wolters Kluwer Tax & Accounting. Read more. What student loan changes are included in the bill? There would be a big one for people who already have debt. You wouldn’t have to pay income taxes on forgiven debt if you qualify for loan forgiveness or cancellation — for example, if you’ve been in an income-driven repayment plan for the requisite number of years, if your school defrauded you or if Congress or the president wipes away $10,000 of debt for large numbers of people. This would be the case for debt forgiven between Jan. 1, 2021, and the end of 2025. Read more. What would the bill do to help people with housing? The bill would provide billions of dollars in rental and utility assistance to people who are struggling and in danger of being evicted from their homes. About $27 billion would go toward emergency rental assistance. The vast majority of it would replenish the so-called Coronavirus Relief Fund, created by the CARES Act and distributed through state, local and tribal governments, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. That’s on top of the $25 billion in assistance provided by the relief package passed in December. To receive financial assistance — which could be used for rent, utilities and other housing expenses — households would have to meet several conditions. Household income could not exceed 80 percent of the area median income, at least one household member must be at risk of homelessness or housing instability, and individuals would have to qualify for unemployment benefits or have experienced financial hardship (directly or indirectly) because of the pandemic. Assistance could be provided for up to 18 months, according to the National Low Income Housing Coalition. Lower-income families that have been unemployed for three months or more would be given priority for assistance. Read more. “When it all boiled down to it, it was a lack of funds that kept the Black farmers down,” said Mr. Patterson, who spoke by phone from the cab of a tractor he had pulled over to the side of the road. “If we had the same amount of investment that the other farmers had, a lot of Black farmers would still be farming this date.” He added, “But because they didn’t have those funds, each year would get worse and worse.” Anthony Daniels, a Democrat in Alabama’s state legislature who serves on the board of One Country Project, a Democratic group focused on rural issues, said that many Black farmers were still suffering from burdensome debt, and that the stimulus provisions would help them pay off loans and related taxes. Where I Stand
Tumblr media
This is where I stand on the 45th President, his power hungry cronies taking positions of authority in his Cabinet and administration, and the majority of Republicans in Congress are a real and active threat to me, my way of life, and all the people I love. Some people are saying that we should give Trump a chance, that we should "work together" with him because he won the election and he is "everyone's president." This is my response: •I will not forget how badly he and so many others treated former President Barack Obama for 8 years... • I will not forget how he disrespected a gold star family based on their religion. • I will not forget how he discriminated against a federal judge based on his ethnic background. •I will not "work together" to privatize Medicare, cut Social Security and Medicaid. •I will not "work together" to build a wall. •I will not "work together" to persecute Muslims. •I will not "work together" to shut out refugees from other countries. •I will not "work together" to lower taxes on the 1% and increase taxes on the middle class and poor. •I will not "work together" to help Trump use the Presidency to line his pockets and those of his family and cronies. •I will not "work together" to weaken and demolish environmental protection. •I will not "work together" to sell American lands, especially National Parks, to companies which then despoil those lands. •I will not "work together" to enable the killing of whole species of animals just because they are predators, or inconvenient for a few, or because some people want to get their thrills killing them. •I will not "work together" to remove civil rights from anyone. •I will not "work together" to alienate countries that have been our allies for as long as I have been alive. •I will not "work together" to slash funding for education. •I will not "work together" to take basic assistance from people who are at the bottom of the socioeconomic ladder. •I will not "work together" to get rid of common sense regulations on guns. •I will not "work together" to eliminate the minimum wage. •I will not "work together" to support so-called "Right To Work" laws, or undermine, weaken or destroy Unions in any way. •I will not "work together" to suppress scientific research, be it on climate change, fracking, or any other issue where a majority of scientists agree that Trump and his supporters are wrong on the facts. •I will not "work together" to criminalize abortion or restrict health care for women. •I will not "work together" to increase the number of nations that have nuclear weapons. •I will not "work together" to put even more "big money" into politics. •I will not "work together" to violate the Geneva Convention. •I will not "work together" to give the Ku Klux Klan, the Nazi Party and white supremacists a seat at the table, or to normalize their hatred. •I will not "work together" to deny health care to people who need it. •I will not "work together" to deny medical coverage to people on the basis of a "pre-existing condition." •I will not "work together" to increase voter suppression. •I will not "work together" to normalize tyranny.I will not “work together” to eliminate or reduce ethical over-site at any level of government. •I will not "work together" with anyone who is, or admires, tyrants and dictators. •I will not "work together" to help private corporations build pipelines to transport their oil, at the expense of our safety and environment. This is my line, and I am drawing it. •I WILL stand for honesty, love, respect for all living beings, and for the beating heart that is the center of Life itself. •I WILL use my voice and my hands, to reach out to the uninformed, and to anyone who will LISTEN: That "winning", "being great again", "rich" or even "beautiful" is nothing... When others are sacrificed to glorify its existence.

The not so secret life of a ‘kidfluencer’: Protection for micro-celebrities
In the past 10 years there has been an influx in what is termed ‘internet celebrities’ these are individuals who have built an online following through the creation and distribution of user generated content. Nonetheless, there is a new wave emerging, the ‘kidfluencer’ also known as micro-celebrities, this are children that become famous because of the parents online fame with many of them staring in family vlogging channels. This blog explores the dark side of family vloggers and the threat it poses to adolescents. I will explore the issues with current legislation for micro-celebrities and what we should be doing to protect our little stars.
youtube
(This Morning, 2017)
Whilst many family vloggers will argue that their regular documentation and sharing of their daily lives on YouTube is a great way to reflect on great memories of their lives it also poses great risks for the children who aren’t able to consent (Abidin, 2017). Whilst the younger generation are well informed on the digital technologies accessible to them, I fear they don’t fully understand the long-term repercussions of the internet (Oswald, Ryan, Nottingham, Hendry, & Woodman, 2017). The long-term documentation of children’s lives online opens them up to damaging scrutiny, psychological turmoil as the lines between work and personal become blurred and privacy is forfeited.
As it stands there is no legislation out there which reasonably protects the rights of child micro-influencers outside of the consent given by parents on their behalf (Oswald, James, & Nottingham, 2016). But what happens if parents lose sight of what really matters, their child’s welfare?  Parents and stars of YouTube channel DaddyOfFive recently lost the custody of the children after physically and psychologically abusing their children for content (Luscombe, 2017). Parents told journalist that it once started out as family fun and on reflection they realise how it could come across to other parents (Luscombe, 2017). Legislative powers are needed to protect the children, so that parents do put fame and fortune before their child’s welfare.

Not only are these children at risk of psychological abuse but they are also the subject of in-direct exploitation. Internet celebrities have reported removing children from YouTube after finding out, their videos were embedded on Paedophilia sites (Tait, 2016). There is an apparent need for media channels such as YouTube to take some form of responsibility when protecting these children online in the same way that regulatory bodies such as Ofcom do for broadcast media (Oswald et al., 2017). In this new digital age, there needs to be dedicated bodies that research and assess the potential risk to kidfluences and introduce regulations to protect them.  It will be interesting to see what direct arrangements will be put in place following the publication of the online harms white paper (HM Government, 2019) and the claims to protect young people. We are currently living through the experiment as these are the first generation of children to grow up online.
