thinking about how they still set a place at the table for gore after he died, his plate sitting there empty. and not long after sir john died and fairholme left (died, too, shortly thereafter, even if they didn't know it yet). how fucking lonely it must have been for dundy and fitzjames afterwards, sharing meals just between the two of them, everyone else who used to eat with them dead and gone.

Rereading The Terror
Chapter Twenty-Four: Crozier
It's Christmas-time in the Arctic and the mood is grim. They've had a special dinner of the most-appetising and least-rotted tinned grub that could be found as well as a few bottles of brandy but they've not enough fuel for light or heat so their attempts at cheer and jolly sing-songs don't last long in the freezing darkness.
The mood is slightly more cheery in the officers' mess, however, as Lieutenant Little - the absolute legend - brings out two bottles of whisky he's been hiding for three goddamn years. What a lad!
Also lifting my own spirits in this chapter are the descriptions of the gifts the men have cobbled together for Crozier. Corporal Hopcraft - injured badly in the attack on the hunting blind and presumably with a lot of time on his broken hands - has carved an entire chess set for the Captain which is both impressive and adorable.
It's then on to planning the big festive benjo. Crozier and Little make their way to Erebus to speak to Fitzjames about it all and interestingly, the roles are reversed somewhat and Fitzjames is far, far less hopeful about rescue and survival than Crozier is: "Your men are dyeing sail canvas out on the ice," said Crozier..."...For perfectly good spare sail. Is this acceptable to you, James?" Fitzjames smiled distantly. "Do you really think we shall need that sail again, Francis?" "I hope to Christ we will," grated Crozier."
Fitzjames is also quite sensitive when it comes to the subject of discipline. Crozier points out that the previous benjos they're emulating (with Hoppner, Parry et al) happened much earlier in much more successful expeditions where discipline was still tight enough to prevent absolute anarchy. Nevertheless, they agree that there's no stopping the preparations now and they'd have a mutiny on their hands if they tried.
Some of the descriptions of Carnivale are just as trippy as the show, if not more so. Crozier makes his way through brightly coloured chambers with increasing confusion and anger until he comes to an entirely black chamber with a stuffed polar bear inside. Fairholme - who incidentally, is dressed as a giant rat - professes to have shot the thing the day before, a mother and a cub.
Crozier escapes the madness momentarily and finds Fitzjames outside smoking: "Good evening, Captain Fitzjames. Have you been inside that...that..." Words failed him... "Aye, I have" said Fitzjames, "The men have shown incredible ingenuity, I would say." "Crozier had nothing to say to that. "The question now," said Fitzjames, "is whether their many hours of labour and ingenuity have gone to serve the expedition...or the Devil."

JFJ Bingo #4: Hand-holding (Fairholme/Fitzjames)
When James finds him, Fairholme’s eyes have already been bandaged. He makes a rather forlorn figure, sitting there in the sick bay on his own, fretting with the hem of his tunic and turning his head not so subtly to try and figure out his surroundings. Doctor Stanley has taken good care of him, but there’s no avoiding that snow-blindness needs time to heal too.
“James,” James says softly, knowing Fairholme has heard him approaching.
Relief washes over Fairholme’s face. “Hello,” he smiles.
“I thought I might fetch you. Ready?”
“More than.”
Fairholme wears a smile for those still around, and James guides him so that Fairholme’s hand is on his shoulder. He leads him like that through the fo’c’sle, past the men, and when they reach the passageway he pauses, turning just a little.
Fairholme’s hand falls, given that James’s shoulder has shifted, and he catches it in his own, squeezing. Now that they’re out of sight of others, he reassures himself just as much as Fairholme, and sees a genuine, fragile smile on Fariholme’s face.
“Thank you.”
James squeezes his hand again gently in response, and doesn’t let go again.

Girl I’m on the wiki pages of Terror characters you don’t even know exist. Based on the picture he’s never had more than 45% of his face not obscured by someone else’s shoulder in frame. Yet (bridgens voice) there will be porn

In Hope of Better Things
Franklin Expedition spoon with the crest of Lieutenant James Walter Fairholme, with the initials C.H. (Cornelius Hickey) later added below it.

[Collection National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, London, former Greenwich Hospital Collection ID: AAA2386
I edited the first photo a bit to make the crest and initials more clearly visible.]

Fairholme's crest as seen in the Illustrated London News of 28 October 1854 p.421, when the finding of this spoon & other relics was announced by John Rae. The motto 'Spero Meliora' means 'In hope of better things'.

actually arrived at the conclusion that all three of terror's lieutenants are autistic.
hodge cannot be bothered to mask and knows that his jokes have at best a 10% chance of landing but he doesn't care. little is depressed and probably has... some kind of ocd or at least some Traits that kind of hide it. but it does come out fairly obviously when he has to double check with somebody else if he is completely misreading The Vibes. unfortunately sometimes the person he checks with is hodgson or irving but it's the thought that counts.
and with irving it's really obvious if he lets somebody else get close enough to see it but for the most part it's covered up by the incidental fact that he's kind of a dick. (also also has like. the most understandably written ocd i've ever seen. it's like looking into a truly horrible mirror.)

Franklin's lost expedition crew
I was looking at posts about AMC's The Terror and I kept getting confused by the use of first names, so I wanted to see how many of the characters had the same names. Arranging the crew in alphabetical order, I got:
1 x Abraham (Seeley)
4 x Alexander (Berry, McDonald, Paterson, Wilson)
5 x Charles (Best, Coombs, Des Voeux, Johnson, Osmer)
1 x Cornelius (Hickey)
2 x Daniel (Arthur, Bryant)
3 x David (Leys, Macdonald, Young) + Bonus: Bryant in the show but most historical sources I found list him as Daniel
1 x Edmund (Hoar)
3 x Edward (Couch, Genge, Little)
2 x Edwin (Helpman, Lawrence)
3 x Francis (Crozier, Dunn, Pocock)
1 x Frederick (Hornby) + Bonus: Des Voeux, whom I have seen referred to as Frederick rather than Charles on occasion
6 x George (Cann, Chambers, Hodgson, Kinnaird, Thompson, Williams)
1 x Gillies (MacBean)
1 x Graham (Gore)
7 x Henry/Harry (Collins, Goodsir, Le Vesconte, Lloyd, Peglar, Sait, Wilkes)
10 x James (Brown, Daly, Elliot, Fairholme, Fitzjames, Hart, Reid, Ridgen, Thompson, Walker) + Bonus: Ross, who was not part of the expedition but appears in the show
23 x John (Bailey, Bates, Bridgens, Brown, Cowie, Diggle, Downing, Franklin, Gregory, Hammond, Handford, Hartnell, Irving, Kenley, Lane, Morfin, Murray, Peddie, Strickland, Sullivan, Torrington, Weekes, Wilson)
2 x Joseph (Andrews, Healey)
1 x Josephus (Geater)
1 x Luke (Smith)
1 x Magnus (Manson)
1 x Philip (Reddington)
1 x Reuben (Male)
2 x Richard (Aylmore, Wall)
8 x Robert (Carr, Ferrier, Golding, Hopcraft, Johns, Sargent, Sinclair, Thomas)
3 x Samuel (Brown, Crispe, Honey)
1 x Solomon (Tozer)
16 x Thomas (Armitage, Blanky, Burt, Darlington, Evans, Farr, Hartnell, Honey, Johnson, Jopson, McConvey, Plater, Tadman, Terry, Watson, Work)
22 x William (Aitken, Bell, Braine, Clossan, Fowler, Gibson, Goddard, Heather, Hedges, Jerry, Johnson, Mark, Orren, Pilkington, Read, Rhodes, Shanks, Sims, Sinclair, Smith, Strong, Wentzall)
