Rain World Friendship Simulator AU- Intro Post
Tumblr media
Friendship Simulator is a Rain World AU that's basically just a slice of life/sitcom type thing. After Enot's campaign, she was sent to not a void where she could attempt to flirt with other slugcats, but a nice, comforting place where all the other scugs went. They all hang out as friends and get up to silly shenanigans
That's pretty much it! Just a calm, relaxed, goofy little AU. There are no real ships, and Enot is on the younger side here, which is why it's Friendship Sim. Occasionally some other folks other than just the main 9 slugcats are there
And here's all the refs!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Enot (she/her) is happy, cheerful, yet deeply emotional younger slugcat who cares a lot for her friends. She gets very excited about things, and just as she does that, Enot also feels horrible when she messes something up. Her goal is to make friends with everyone, and make everyone be friends with each other, to have some happiness and everyone's lives. She's also basically just me projecting on to a character I really like
Monk (he/him) is slightly nervous, but bubbly and full of love for the world. Karma flowers seem to grow on him, and he hands them out to everyone. Usually he stays close to Survivor, but is also good friends with Enot and really looks up to Saint
Survivor (they/them) is quiet, thoughtful, and caring. They don't talk often, but really open up to their closest friends out of the group, and especially to their younger brother
Hunter (she/her) is brave and tough with a heart of gold. She'll step in to solve arguments amongst the rest of the slugcats, and isn't afraid to fight if need be. She's in a platonic relationship with Artificer. The rot on her isn't going to kill her anymore, because the Friendship Sim Zone is a safe space from harm
Gourmand (he/him) is loving of everyone. He's always there to talk to whoever needs it, and loves telling stories, both real and made up. He's the designated chef, and makes food exactly how all this friends like it
Artificer (she/her) is sarcastic, standoffish, and snappy. She rarely opens up at all, even though everyone knows what she's been through. Hunter is the only one who she actually gets her problems out with. She's adopted Enot as a new child because Enot lost her parents and Artificer lost her children. Artificer is also the only one (besides Saint) to know that Enot also lost her brother Nightcat in a terrible accident. But Hunter and Enot are the only ones she shows her sensitive side to
Rivulet (he/it) is energetic and rambunctious and says terrifying things and doesn't know how terrifying they are. "Haha yeah, so I was sprinting through Five Pebbles and there were two huge Long Legs chasing me! One of them grabbed me and starting dragging me through narrow tunnels and I dropped the Rarefaction Cell an- what do you mean that isn't normal?" He's very friendly, but most of the older slugcats get worn out by its energy very fast
Spearmaster (he/him) is solemn and soft-spoken most of the time, but does get excited about things that interest him. He makes a lot of art in his free time, often showcasing it to everyone... except Enot. They have a very rocky relationship, with Enot always seeming to be able to catch him at the worst times possible when Spearmaster is in a terrible mood. He doesn't hate her though. He just thinks her positivity and long-winded ramblings are the last thing he needs to hear when worrying about Seven Red Suns
Saint (he/they) is calm and collected, offering advice and concern to everyone. He isn't a fan of Artificer, due to her Karma issues, or Gourmand because of his rejection of ascension, but less so with him. They're unable to achieve perfect attunement in the Friendship Sim Zone for safety reasons. Saint is aware of Enot's brother, due to what happened to him, but has never told her about it
Below the cut are the refs for the iterators, who stop by sometimes, and Enot's older brother Nightcat, and what happened with them!
Tumblr media
The iterators pop by occasionally, most to check up on their emotional support slugcat. Moon is the most frequent visitor, since all of the scugs love her, and Pebbles the least common, because he has work to do. Moon will bring in fun little things for the slugcats that have floated into her chamber, Sig will sneak them some games that were left up in his city, Suns mostly just stays with Spearmaster, and Pebbles will monolouge at whatever slugcat he's decided he's mad at today before leaving in the most dramatic fashion possible
Tumblr media
Nightcat is a terrifying, ghost story cryptid. He mostly lives in Rubicon where he died, slinking around, but will occasionally make visits to the surface world on the darkest of nights. He seldom speaks, except for faint whispers in the caverns of Rubicon. He guides lost and wayward souls to the Void Sea, although rude slugpups turn this into him snatching up anyone he can and throwing them into the Void Fluid
Tumblr media
Enot and Nightcat before their Rubicon incident
When the two were young, their parents died in an accident trying to get them to a shelter. They had run through a Scavenger Toll with no pearls to offer, and were chased after. Their mother was killed almost immediately, and their father pierced with a spear. He managed to lead them to a shelter before collapsing, but there was nothing either of them could do. Afterwards, they had to fend for themselves against the cruelty of the world. Nightcat, being the older one, was usually in charge
One day, when wandering in the depths of Subterranean, Nightcat found a deep, deep hole, and suggested to Enot that they should explore it. They both jumped down, and ended up not in the Depths, but Rubicon, despite neither of them having max Karma
They carefully tip-toed around the dangerous region, both desperate to get back out. They were attacked by all of the terrifying creatures that lived there, but using the incredible power of fire spears, were able to defend themselves...
Until a Miros Vulture swooped down
Nightcat picked up a nearly golden fire spear that seemed to have been submerged in Void Fluid at some point, and tried to throw it, only to realize the Void Fluid was making it stick to his hands. So he had to fight the Miros Vulture in close combat, until Enot threw a rock at its head that knocked it off balance and caused it to fly back up. Nightcat bent down to dip the spear in the Void Fluid around the small patch of land they were on to hopefully fully dissolve it and free his hands, when the Miros Vulture came back. It pointed its laser at Enot, and Nightcat jumped in front of her, pushing her away and being blasted backwards into the Void Fluid, quickly vanishing beneath the golden water
Enot had never been filled with so much rage. In her fury, she leapt at the Miros Vulture, clawing and biting at it. She sunk her teeth into the softest part of its neck, and it collapsed. She stood over its body, and took a bite out of it. Behind her, a Guardian approached, and pointed a long tendril at her. She fell down with a thud as the body of the Miros Vulture disappeared, and felt like she was burning. The Guardian dropped her Karma down to two, since what had transpired had been out of love, although of a different kind than what two implies. It burned the symbol into her, and she was brought back to way above Rubicon, at the edge of Outer Expanse. She looked much different than before, and had woken up with weird colors, strange eyes, the Karma two symbol burnt into her chest, and a weird egg in her hand. Now alone, Enot reflected on everything, and decided to do everything in her power to make herself happy
Nightcat on the other hand, suffered a much worse fate
He was completely submerged in Void Fluid in seconds, and couldn't drop the spear to swim. He tried, and as he did, stabbed himself through the stomach with it. He was finally able to let go of it, but fell down into the golden liquid, his last memories flashing before him being him and Enot being happy. As he sunk into the Void Fluid, he didn't turn into an Echo. He became a slender beast with too many arms and legs that moved as silently as a shadow, cursed to lurk in the dark depths of Rubicon, and only sometimes being able to see the real world again. He couldn't move on, but was able to walk the waking world still, as his death had been noble and he had technically died before getting to ascend. He was never able to find Enot again, instead deciding to guide the wayward and abandoned who fell into Rubicon like he had to a better place
Whew! That's pretty much everything. I hope you all enjoy Friendship Simulator!

RD AU Draft: 2
(Same as last time but now featuring some edited parts-- Considering this a draft because its mostly unedited and I haven’t added everything in yet- but feel free to read it! The finished part will most likely be uploaded on ao3 but I’ll be sure to post a link to it on here.) Anthony had, had a similar reaction to Evan’s when he saw Tyler’s outfit. He wheezed and laughed too hard for his own good, but he got over it quickly in place of his own excitement.
The entire trip to the skate park was about how much they were going to enjoy the bout, how much fun they were going to have. Even after they had gotten inside and seated it was still just him blabbering on.
“They’re so-so cool! I promise you’ll both enjoy this and-”
Tyler put his hand on Anthony’s mouth. “Okay, we get it. Calm down, dude,” he mumbled. After getting a nod, he removed his hand. Then, he jumped in his seat after hearing a voice. “Tyler?” he turned his head, fear raising in hm. More people he knew meant more people not letting him live down the fact that he wore this outfit, meaning more jokes, meaning- wait.
“Luke?” he asked, snickering.
The man in front of him grinned and crossed his arms. “The one and only,” he chuckled. “What’re you doin’ here? I didn’t know you liked derby,” he asked, curious. Tyler shrugged. “I don’t know if I do. My friend dragged me out here to watch. What are you doing here and-” he giggled, “With bunny ears?” Luke blinked and then chuckled. “These?” he gestured up, “Aren’t mine. I stole them from Ryan. He came with me this time, but I usually regular the bouts,” he explained. And, aren’t you one to talk, cat boy?”
Tyler decided to ignore the comment, not wanting to linger on the topic of his clothes. “No way is Ryan here,” he spoke, genuinely surprised. “Oh, yeah. It's his first time at one of these too,” he replied, “I wanted to get him introduced to a new sport.” Tyler nodded, and glanced over to his friends, who were both sort of looking at him in confusion. Which, that made him confused until he let out an ‘oh’.
“Right. Luke,” he looked at him again, smiling some, “This is Evan and Anthony, my friends. You and Ryan should come sit with us.” Luke smiled at the other two, getting polite smiles in turn. “Sounds great!” he agreed. “I’ll go find, Ry and tell him we’re over here,” he added and turned to walk away.
They all grew more excited for the bout.
--
The bout had started off good, the teams getting introduced and the first few rotations going well.
Tyler was really getting into it, yelling at the skaters, encouraging the team he was rooting for, the Derby Dolls, and getting just overly excited.
“Keep going!” Tyler shouted, watching as the girl quickly moved her way out of the group and onto the turn. The crowd cheered excitedly as well. “Yeah! You kick their asses, AnnihilateHer!” he shouted, gripping the edge of his seat. He was having a better time than he thought he would.
Evan watched the girl quickly move her way around one that tried to stop her, his eyes wide in amazement and his smile wide. “Good job!” he shouted, hoping his encouragement would reach her as she sped a corner.
Tyler watched her with careful eyes and then he glared at the ref who called her, managing to hear it was a backblock- like the eighth one called to night (not on just her). “She wasn’t anywhere near her back! Open your fucking eyes!” he yelled at the ref and he kicked the wall in front of him. He’s done it several times already.
Anthony laughed gently. He was glad his friends were enjoying themselves. “I told you both you’d like it,” he teased as the jam ended, the next one setting up to be a power jam. Tyler looked at him, his eyes sparkling and his grin crazily wide. “Dude this is sick! It’s so fucking cool- I can’t believe they’d allow a sport like this,” he laughed. “It’s wild,” he chuckled. “You’re wild,” Evan snickered, “You’ve kicked that wall a billion times now, and I think you’re voice is loud enough the refs hear you the last few times. Control yourself,” he teased and got a punch to the arm in turn. “Shut up and let me have this,” he stated, but there wasn’t any spite or sarcasm, he was still smiling and having a good time. This was fun!
He looked to Ryan and Luke, who were in a similar state, though Luke was calmer due to having seen this all live so many times.
“And she just slammed into her-” Ryan exclaimed, hands flailing as he tried to explain. “Yeah, I know, Ry. I saw it,” Luke laughed softly and he looked at him with wide eyes full of awe. “They didn’t flinch, Luke! That’s amazing! This is really cool-” he looked to the track as a new pack formed. “Can you imagine if I did that?”
Luke tilted his head a bit. “Ryan, if I could imagine you doing it, I’d already be doing it,” he answered and Ryan huffed a little. “Really, Luke! Think about it! It’d be so much fun to play together- to learn how to do this cool stuff and-”
“You know, you can play it,” Anthony answered him. Ryan paused and looked back, curiosity in his eyes. “What?” he asked. “You can totally play it. In fact, I’m making a mens team- if you want to play,” he offered and Ryan stared before grinning wide. “No way.”
“I’ll do it,” Luke followed, gaining eyes. “I’ll totally play. Sounds fun.” Ryan pursed his lips. “It does sound really fun,” he agreed.
Tyler looked at Ryan, nodding. “I was the first to join, can confirm it's very fun-” “You didn’t want to join- plus, you haven’t even played yet,” Anthony cut in and Tyler looked at him with a glare. “I was the first you asked which makes me first to join,” he stuck his tongue out at him, and Anthony stuck his out in turn before they both chuckled. “I was second to join then!” Evan declared, snickering.
Luke looked at Ryan as he spoke. “I was third. You wanna be fourth Ry? Come on, you wanna do what those awesome girls are doin?” he asked, encouraging him to join. Ryan bit his lip lightly, thinking it over before he nodded. “Yeah… Yeah! I do! I wanna do that shit too! Consider me on the team! Whenever it's actually made anyways,” he grinned.
Anthony couldn’t believe his team was actually beginning to form.
--
The bout ended on a good note, the team they were rooting for winning and Anthony treated his friends to dinner (he even took out Ryan and Luke- they were going to be on his team after all so he figured he’d get to know them).
But, when he got home and sat down to start putting preparations for the team together, he finally got hit with a realization;
Making a team was harder than Anthony initially thought.
He had to advertise out to get more people. Four weren’t enough to cut it- it wasn’t even enough to start practicing (five being a good place to start). He also had the issue of needing to register his team, get jerseys, budgeting, getting forms and waivers.
He needed some help.
He ran his hands over his face, and sighed. This wasn’t too good. Who could he get to help? He didn’t know anybody else who seemed to show an interest in coaching the sport, and it didn’t seem like the type of thing he could drop a flyer for.
He thought over people, thinking of names he hadn’t thought of for a good while until one hit him with a good familiarity and made the lightbulb in his head go off as he grabbed his phone.
Anthony stared at his phone, eyeing the profile he had quickly pulled up on Facebook- thankfully they were friends already. He was hesitant, of course. He hadn’t talked to Brock in years. Was this weird? He fidgeted a bit with the device before he sucked up his worries and quickly typed a message. When he finished it, he patiently waited, running his hand through his hair.
--
A yawn left Brock’s lips as he sat his bag down on his bed. His clothes were stained with a drink some lady spilled on him, and he couldn’t wait to get them off.
God he hated his job. He was the nicest person he could be, yet someone was always ready to complain. The fast food industry could die. But, that thought made him laugh a little. Like this country would let fast food die.
He shook his head and got changed quickly before he finally got into bed and looked at his phone, only to see he got a message from… Anthony?
He stared at his screen, eyeing the message a few times over in surprise. Why would Anthony of all people be messaging him this late? Or now? He hadn’t even talked to him for the last few years. Regardless of that thought, he opened the message curiously and read through it quickly, a smile crossing his face momentarily before confusion hit.
‘Wanna help coach a bunch of dumbasses with my dumbass?’
The idea of himself coaching didn’t sound right, but the phrasing of the request was funny and it did keep Brock’s attention, especially as three dots appeared at the bottom.
‘Roller derby, I mean. You wanna help coach it? Adult league.’
A sudden feeling hit at the mention of the sport. He had loved playing it as a child, really. It was dangerous- despite the gear they wore, but the team experience is something he always held onto, even after he aged out at 18. But, the idea of coaching it? It had never crossed his mind. Until now, and it was till laughable. However, an opportunity to meet new people is always nice, and he did need a change in setting from where he was now.
He especially needed the latter. Quickly, he responded back.
‘More details would be nice, like where you’re living these days. But, I’m in.’
--
Anthony didn’t actually live too far from him, so it wasn’t hard to start planning on moving closer to the area if he were to actually take up the coaching position.
“What’cha thinkin’ about?” he jumped a little and looked up from the counter before sighing. “Don’t scare me like that, Lui,” he mumbled before standing up straight. “Sorry, just thought I’d kick you from you daze before someone else did,” he spoke, a bit genuine and a smile went with it that Brock could resist. “It’s fine,” he passed it off, “Thanks for snapping me out of it, actually.”
The shorter nodded and kicked his feet lightly before speaking; “So, you gonna answer me?” Brock took a minute before nodding a little. “I was offered a coaching position,” he answered, “I’ve been considering taking it up. I’m supposed to go meet the… team they have so far and the actual coach.” Lui beamed. “You should do it!” he nearly squealed. “It’ll be good for you, Brock! Get you out of your comfort zone,” he added, “Plus- I can totally go with you to the meeting, right?” The brunette grew confused at that request. “Why… why would you want to go to the meeting?” he asked and Lui chuckled. “As your back up incase stuff goes wrong, of course!” he chuckled. “I’m a tough cookie!” he squeaked out and Brock chuckled. “Yeah, Okay. You can come. Just don’t be too mean to anybody.” “No promises!”

Child Psychology and Chara
Tumblr media
(Sprites from the sprite resource of CrasherGale, who has since left Tumblr)
(Made with consulting from Keetah Spacecat.) (WARNING: This article covers Chara's possible motives for knowingly eating a lethal dose of poisonous flowers. It thus covers some dark material.)
Some fan works depict “Chara” (the default name of the Fallen Child that will be used in this article) as violent and demonic even before the completion of the Genocide Route. It’s possible this interpretation comes from a lack of familiarity with child psychology, or disagreeing on Chara’s age and thus age-appropriate moral awareness. Furthermore, there’s little evidence Chara acted demonic before the Genocide Route. Sometimes, kids are little sociopaths—and that’s not a sign they’re pure evil.
Basic (Canon) Information
Canon Details:
Tumblr media
Hated humanity.
Felt very strongly about that, but never talked about why.
With Asriel, poisoned Asgore by putting buttercups in a pie rather than cups of butter
Laughed upon hearing Asgore was really sick
Apparently does creepy faces sometimes
When Asriel had absorbed their SOUL, wanted Asriel to use his “full power” on the humans
Has a sophisticated vocabulary (“vanquished”, “absolute”, “consequences”, etc.) and formal way of speaking for a child
Climbed Mt. Ebott, a mountain it's said travellers never return from
Chara's reason for doing so "wasn't for a very happy reason".
Extrapolation:
Made the Mr. Dad Guy sweater
This is based on how Asriel just calls Asgore “Dad”, and how Chara may be reluctant to refer to Asgore as just “dad” due to being adopted when they could remember their original parents.
Chara’s age is 8-12.
This is based on Chara’s planning abilities and sophisticated vocabulary.
Chara hated humanity and was “very clear about that”: this is one of their few canon traits. However, dying a gruesome death by buttercup poisoning does seem quite a lot to do out of just hate. Most people wouldn’t go so far as to die to destroy something they hated.
While wanting to destroy humanity was surely motivated least partly by hate, the particular intentions of the plan and how well they would execute it would likely depend on age. Assuming an age range of 8-12, Chara would likely be in the Stages 2, 3, or 4 of Kohlberg’s developmental stages, with Stage 3 being the most likely.
Tumblr media
The apparent purpose of the buttercup plan was to “free everyone”. That is what Asriel emphasizes in the VHS tapes, and also what the Angel of the Prophecy is said to do.
In Underline, Growth Spurt, Dogs of Future Past: Chara Origins, Chara’s motives were initially explained or mentioned to Asriel in ways more sympathetic than punishment, vengeance or simple hate. It’s unclear whether Chara had the mental ability to anticipate Asriel reacting badly if they said their motives were one of those three, or whether Chara just reloaded whenever they got a bad outcome.
Kohlberg’s Stage 2
Ages 5-7 or 9, or Ages 4-101
Tumblr media
“People at Stage 2 are self-protective, dominant, exploitative, and opportunistic. The need to love and to be loved is gratified on the basis of reciprocal altruism.”- The Moral Development of the Child: An Integrated Model
Though those in Stage 2 may sometimes seem as if they lack morals, they do have some sense of right action. The stage is defined by fair exchanges and pragmatic reciprocating, with moral reasoning guided by a sense of “fair play”. Stage 2 reasoning shows a limited concern for others, but only to the point where it might further the individual’s own interests: it’s a “you scratch my back and I’ll scratch yours” mentality. Thus, it’s not based on loyalty or intrinsic respect.
Chara’s needs or interests might include punishing/inflicting vengeance on humans for one or more of these reasons: treating Chara specifically badly, sealing monsters underground long ago, or their wicked deeds in general. According to this source, vengeance is in fact considered a moral obligation at this stage.2
Though collectively punishing all of humanity/a minimum of six people doesn’t make sense (assuming that minimum of six people didn’t abuse Chara), it might make sense if Chara is ages 8-10. Kohlberg based his work on Jean Piaget’s own work on moral development in children, though Piaget’s had fewer stages. Those in the first of Piaget’s stages (approximately from age 5 to age 11-12) believe in collective punishment, so, if one person in a group does something bad, it would make sense to punish everyone in that group.
Due to the principle of reciprocity, Chara may also have thought they should “return the favor” to monsterkind by sacrificing themselves for monsters’ freedom. However, because this stage is characterized by pragmatic reciprocity, such an altruistic perspective does seem unlikely at this age (and death by buttercups was an awful way to die).
--
GlitchTale
Tumblr media
In the GlitchTale episode Continue, Chara tells Asriel that Frisk isn't the goody two-shoes they thought they were. Chara didn’t force Frisk to do the Genocide Route; Frisk did so themselves. When Frisk reset, all the hate (which is both a substance and a feeling here, like Determination) built up in that route went to Chara.3 Chara says it makes them sick that Frisk thinks they’re above consequences, wants to make “the little murderer” pay for their actions, and also believes that Frisk shall use all of Asriel’s friends as toys forever. This relates to the idea vengeance is considered a moral obligation in Stage 2.
--
Underline
In one timeline, Chara crossed the barrier with Asriel by holding hands, and some humans attacked Asriel because he was a monster. Later, during a horrific reliving of this event, Chara stabbed (who they thought was) a human. Chara believed humans thought themselves above consequences, and wanted to make them regret what they did. (Later, Chara’s motives were different. As a soul absorbed by Asriel, Chara wanted to destroy humans because they considered humans “the real monsters” who would destroy their family.)
Kohlberg’s Stage 3
Tumblr media
Age Estimate: 7-13.
People in Stage 3 are aware of shared feelings and expectations, which are more important than individual interests. Those in Stage 3 believe people should live up to the expectations of the family and community and behave in “good” ways. To do right is to conform to social expectations, such as showing concern for others and following rules set by others to win their approval. Belief in the “golden rule” is one aspect of Stage 3. The reasons for doing the right thing is to maintain rules and authority and to be seen as a nice and good person by others.
Tumblr media
If Chara believed they were expected to be “the future of humans and monsters” and/or “the angel of the prophecy”, that would count as an expectation of the family and community. Thus, Chara would believe they had to break the barrier by any means necessary because that’s what the angel of prophecy and/or the future of “humans and monsters” should do.
By this perspective, the buttercup plan would have seemed like a good, moral plan to get Asriel past the barrier to obtain more SOULs. Chara’s hatred for humanity might have made this plan easier to do, especially if Chara planned from the start to get more human SOULs by killing.
However, part of this stage is belief in the “Golden Rule”, and “do unto others as others would do unto you” doesn’t really apply, since Chara (as a SOUL absorbed by Asriel) wanted to kill humans but wouldn’t want humans to kill them in turn.
--
Dogs of Future Past (WARNING: This section is slightly darker than usual.)
In Dogs of Future Past: Chara Origins, Chara was raised in a cult. Chara tried to be “good” and obey the cult’s teachings and the claimed desires of The Player, a godlike being the cult worshipped. The cult said The Player would wipe away all those whose hearts were filthy with wickedness (that is, kill them) and would do so “soon”. Sometimes, Chara seemed to think The Player’s desires were valid, to the point they questioned why The Player hadn’t destroyed wicked people already. Yet, after the callousness and cruelty of the cult members, Chara concluded everyone in the cult was a bad as everyone outside it.
Later, Asgore calls Chara (and Asriel) “the future of humans and monsters” in front of a crowd of monsters, which causes them all to cheer. Chara interpreted this as a crushing responsibility to do the best thing for monsterkind. Later Chara concluded they were what the Player was playing as/conflating their identity with the Player's, and so executed the buttercup plan. Their original parents repeatedly told them how "selfishness corrodes the heart". Chara may thus have thus believed a sense of self-preservation was selfish, and fulfilling monsters' apparent expectations was worth more than their individual life.
Kohlberg’s Stage 4
Age Estimate: 10-15, on average.
““Right” is helping maintain social order by doing one’s duty, obeying laws simply because they are laws, and showing respect for authorities simply because they are authorities.” -Psychology Second Edition, by Hockenbury & Hockenbury
Stage 4 reflects a belief that rules maintain the social order and that the social system will break down if people do not follow rules. At this stage, doing good involves following through on what one has agreed to do, for the good of the larger social system.
If Chara believed it was their duty to free monsters, Chara may have believed any tactic that would enable them to fulfill that duty was justified. On the matter of "following through on what you have agreed to do", perhaps Chara thought Asriel ought to follow through with the buttercup plan they had agreed to do together, to the point of (potentially) manipulating him to ensure he complied.4
--
The Chara of Dogs of Future Past: Chara Origins is, of all the applicable Chara interpretations the author has studied, the closest to this interpretation. However, Stage 3 is better-supported in the work.
Caveat
Kohlberg's work has been criticized in various ways. In the scope of this article, there's only one major flaw: Kohlberg’s early studies were done purely on male subjects. It’s therefore possible his work doesn’t reflect the development of moral reasoning in girls. The book Psychology Second Edition (by Hockenbury & Hockenbury) points out that, in general, men and women may approach moral matters from slightly different perspectives. Many works do not describe or specify Chara as a boy or girl, or openly define Chara as neither, so which perspective to take is unclear.
Conclusion
Tumblr media
If Frisk talks with Asriel in the playable epilogue of the Pacifist Route, Asriel will eventually come to terms with his decision to resist Chara’s control and not kill the humans attacking him. Asriel realized that if had killed them, it would have started a war with humanity.
Some suggest war with humanity was the whole point of the buttercup plan, and particularly point out the detail that Chara requested to see the golden flowers of their village before dying. It is, however, likely Chara couldn’t foresee all the consequences to monsters from their plan, including the immense emotional suffering for their family members. Thus, as far they knew, the plan was a good and moral one.

As Voltrathesparking pointed out, this does bring up some questionable motives: if Chara's goal was vengeance, how could they be sure vengeance would be executed if they died? Wouldn't they want to see the look on humans' faces as they/Asriel destroyed them? Some works presume the two Waterfall history plaques unreadable in the game (the one in the artifact room and the one defaced by Nice Cream flavors) provided the information that a monster that absorbed a human SOUL had control of its body split between the two SOULs. However, this remains speculation. ↩︎
It’s possible the hate substance itself made Chara feel hate spontaneously, and it was up to Chara to put reasons to it. (See this GlitchTale analysis) Nonetheless, this would reflect Chara’s, well, character. ↩︎

Pairing: (eventual) addcest [LPDE] & elsain [LKATh] WC this chapter: 2634 Rating: T+/M TWs: (past) abuse AU: modern/single parent Lusa (with his tiny son Arc) + runaway Esper Notes: kitty doodles help healing 100% real confirmed true
Esper had lost track of time, but that had been a while back already. Ever since he'd graduated from the university, he'd never even known what day it is. He didn't need to.
But it's Saturday today. He knows, because Arc isn't at the kindergarten and Lusa isn't at work.
The boy had come home in the morning, lugging inside a giant stuffed cat and his usual drawstring backpack. He'd been over at an uncle's, he'd said.
He'd been over at a friend's, Lusa corrects. He didn't want to leave the boy alone while they went to the policlinic. That also confuses Esper; wasn't it a hospital? Lusa assures him it's a policlinic. When he asks what the difference is, Lusa gives him a vague hand motion instead of an answer.
And so they eat their breakfast — aside from Arc, who'd apparently eaten at Ref's already. The boy seems frustrated with Esper's cast, for some reason.
He keeps glaring daggers at it, even as he tells them all about his night (or evening, more accurately) and about the amazing pirate fight in which he'd slain Anpa. Esper chews on his cereal, asking questions in between spoonfuls.
Lusa watches his son fondly. There's a spark in his big eyes, motions exaggerated as he uses his action figure (it's just a Spiderman Barbie) to show them exactly how the battle bad gone.
"I got it!" Arc exclaims out of nowhere, in the middle of a sentence, jumping off the chair.
Esper and Lusa both watch him with interest as he disappears upstairs, coming back down in a few minutes, markers in hand. His face screams determination as he nudges Esper's chair and pulls on his casted leg. He's nowhere near strong enough to pull it in the direction he wants, but Esper obliges, relaxing and moving the leg as he wants. He glances over at Lusa when Arc positions it on another chair.
Lusa simply laughs at his son's antics. Arc pulls out a red marker, taking the cap off with his teeth and descending onto the cast like a hungry vulture. The squiggles and shaky lines resemble... well, Esper has no idea.
"What is that?" Lusa asks, leaning over the table to take a look. Esper doesn't flinch away, and not just because of having his leg up.
"A cat! It's a cat!" Arc pouts, pointing with the other end of the marker. "See? This is its tail, and these are whiskers!"
"That looks more like a burnt breakfast," Lusa remarks, earning himself the marker, as Arc chuck it at him.
"Meanie! You're even worse at drawing!"
"You must've gotten in from someone." Lusa catches the marker with ease, handing it back and ruffling the boy's hair. "I'm joking, it's cute."
Esper smiles down at the child, looking at the doodles adorning his cast. "I like them, Arc. They're pretty," he says.
It lights Arc up, a bright smile as he switches for a green marker, adding more to the first doodles. "I'll cover the whole thing! Having kitties around helps healing! You'll be better in no time at all!"
"Arc's drawings help injuries," Lusa says, finishing his coffee in slow sips. "At least that's what he says."
Arc puffs up his chest, placing his hands on his hips. He seems proud of himself as he says, "They do! Just you wait, Esper is gonna feel better soon!"
Esper laughs, carefully lowering his leg. He won't tell Arc that it doesn't hurt anymore, since he can't bend it in the direction that it'd hurt. He can even walk on it, if he's slow and careful. Lusa still tells him to sit down and doesn't let him do much. He even stopped Esper from doing any of the house chores when they'd come back from Arme's.
Arc puts his markers away, ever the clean kid (especially under Lusa's expectant gaze).
He catches sight of the clock on the wall as he goes to put them away again. "Dad!" he cries, startling them both with the volume and urgency. "Dad, it started! It already started! Come on, come on!"
The boy tugs his dad up, pulling him towards the living room with all the might of a five-year-old a third of the size of Lusa can manage. Lusa catches Esper's confused head tilt and chuckles.
"Arc's favorite show airs at eight," he explains, "Feel free to join us if you want."
The TV turns on and Arc jumps onto the couch excitedly, calling for Esper, "Join us, join us!! I wanna show you my favorite show!!"
Esper shuffles his way over to the living room. Arc is patting the spot next to himself, looking at him with a smile that's all teeth and tiny dimples. Lusa sits next to him on the other side, remote in hand and switching through the channels to find the cartoon one.
Lusa finally finds the channel and sets the remote down, while Arc already points excitedly at the screen, almost off the couch.
"His name is Tom!" he says, vibrating in his seat. Lusa chuckles, since this is obviously very usual for the boy.
The cartoon is just a cat chasing a mouse, and then the mouse chasing the cat (?) and there is dynamite and Arc is laughing and Esper has no idea what's going on, but since the boy is happy, it doesn't really matter.
Esper isn't sure how long they stay there, gradually drifting together until they're leaning against each other, Arc sprawled halfway over them. Esper's eyelids flutter.
He's barely dozing off when he's stirred awake by Arc stretching and hopping off the couch.
"I'm hungry!" he says, "I'm hungry, I'm hungry! What're we having for lunch?"
Esper perks up, barely suppressing a yawn, and pipes up, "I can make something. What would you like?"
"No," Lusa stops him immediately when he attempts to stand up. "You're supposed to be resting. How about we get take out?"
"Oh! Oh! I want pizza!"
"Pizza it is then." Lusa digs in his pocket and pulls out his phone, unlocking it and passing it over to Esper. "There's the pizzeria app. Get one big pepperoni for me, a kid special with three cheeses for Arc — it comes with a toy, he loves it — and anything you want for yourself."
Esper browses the selection for a moment, selecting the ones Lusa told him to and then looking over the options. Hawaii sounds good. He likes the idea of something sweet on the pizza. He picks that one.
'Order placed,' pops up, so he hands the phone back to Lusa, curling up against the side of the couch again. Arc seems way too excited by the prospect of pizza, nudging Lusa's side with his tiny finger, over and over, until the man halfheartedly starts swatting him away.
"How long till it comes?" Arc asks, dodging Lusa's hand and jabbing between his ribs again, pulling a groan out of him.
"About half an hour," Lusa mumbles, tossing the phone next to himself between the cushions and turning to his son. "Don't act like this is the first time we've had pizza. What're you trying to do, impress Esper?"
Arc recoils, twisting his lips into a pout. "How would that impress him?!"
Esper watches them from his spot, tucking his hurt leg underneath himself, eyelids fluttering. He smiles softly, almost without even noticing. "You don't have to try and impress me," he mutters.
Arc sticks his tongue out at his father and then shuffles on the couch, settling by Esper and resting his head against the man's slim shoulder. They watch the cartoons, with Arc's attentive commentary and Esper's sleepy, affirmative hums to let the boy know he's listening.
There haven't been many free days, or days spent lazing around like this. Esper's fingers itch to do something, but his mind is hazy, eyes barely comprehending the pastely characters. He feels like he's floating on a flock of clouds, somewhere far up in the sky. It's a nice feeling.
He fades in and out of consciousness a few times, catching bits and pieces of what Arc is telling him and responding in tiny 'hmm?'s and 'ah's. Lusa fiddles with his phone on the other side of the couch, barely paying attention to them or the TV. Or so it feels like, at least.
It seems the half hour passes much faster than he notices, because the doorbell rings out and wakes him, and he's instantly sitting up, heart in throat.
Lusa stretches his arms above his head, letting out a yawn. "Pizza must be here," he says, getting up and waddling his way to the entrance door.
"Pizza! Pizza!" Arc chants, hopping off the couch and following after Lusa.
Esper stares after them, his heartbeat calming down gradually as he listens to Lusa talking to the delivery man, their voices muffled and punctuated by Arc's excited cries. He feels silly for being so strung up when there's no danger. There isn't any danger here, but he just can't seem to be able to convince himself of it.
It haunts him, fills his dreams during the nights so he wakes up in cold sweat, staring at a phantom standing over the bed. The voice is engraved into his ears, and he hears it through the deafening silence, when there should be a sting on his cheek and a barking of how useless he is. He still expects it, tenses up with each loud sound. Loud voices are the worst; they force his breath straight out of him and make his fingers shake so hard he's unable to do anything with them.
He didn't realize how bad it'd been until there wasn't yelling every other minute.
Shoving the memory of words way too sharp to the back of his mind, he stands up, though he finds he didn't have to. Lusa and Arc are back already, Lusa with a stack of boxes.
They settle back on the couch and Lusa checks the bigger boxes, passing the smaller one to Arc without hesitation. Esper is also passed a box before Lusa stands up again, disappearing into the kitchen and returning with a handful of tissues, setting them down onto the coffee table.
Arc tears apart the black plastic bag taped to the pizza box and pulls out its contents, eager to discover the surprise toy. It turns out to be a toy car, and he uses Esper's unsuspecting cast a road. Esper, with a slice of pizza in his hand, hanging down as he slowly chews on the greasy, cheesy food, doesn't seem to mind.
Lusa does, though. "Your food will get cold," he says, plucking the toy from Arc's hand and hiding it behind himself, much to the boy's chagrin.
"That's unfair!" Arc cries, trying to worm his hand behind his dad and retrieve it.
"I'll give it back when you finish eating," Lusa says, half illegible due to his mouth being stuffed with his own pizza.
Arc pouts, but quickly finds it won't help him in any way; Lusa simply ignores him and goes back to his phone game, tapping away as he makes his way through the slice, and Esper doesn't seem to understand his woes, and only offers him a slice of pizza from his box.
The boy huffs audibly and flops against the cushions, pulling out a slice and biting into it with the sole purpose of getting his toy back. (Okay, maybe the pizza is good. Maybe he's not just doing it for the toy.)
"You finished with that?" Lusa asks, motioning to Esper's pizza box, his own held up.
Esper blinks at the sudden question, forcing down the immediate reply of 'no no no' in favor of the real one. "Yeah."
Lusa grabs the box and stacks it on top of his, and then gets Arc's too. "You don't have to eat the leftovers, we have a bunch of other stuff in the freezer, but I'll leave it in the fridge," he calls from the kitchen, trying to find a way to fit all three boxes onto the shelves somehow.
He lingers in the kitchen, though, popping his head through the door just barely so he could ask Esper, "Do you want coffee?"
Esper nods enthusiastically and paints a wide smile onto Lusa's face with that, the man disappearing again. Esper returns his attention to the TV and the cartoon still playing.
Arc had disappeared upstairs into his room with his new toy car, eager to play with it on his city-like carpet.
Lusa returns in a few minutes, two steaming mugs held in his hands. He passes one over to Esper, waiting until he wraps his fingers around it comfortably before letting go, settling down next to him on the couch.
"You don't strike me as the coffee type," he mumbles, so deep in thought he doesn't even notice he's said that as he sips his coffee softly.
Esper looks at him with a weird expression — then again, most of his expressions seem weird to Lusa. So guarded, so hurt, so unsure. He doesn't like them. "Is that bad? I drank it a lot while studying," Esper confesses.
An exhausted laugh leaves Lusa's lips and he shakes his head. "It's not bad at all, don't worry. Just surprising."
Esper hums, bringing the mug up to his mouth, taking a sip after blowing onto the liquid. "I see."
"What else do you like, Esper?" Lusa asks, seemingly out of nowhere, eyes gazing at the younger man with honest curiosity.
Esper brings a knee up and rests his cheek against it, holding the warm mug tightly and staring into the twisting liquid. "I like chocolate, it's my favorite. I didn't have it very often, and I had to hide it fr-" He stops, biting down on his lip, glancing sideways. Lusa still has that curious look on his face, but there's also something else, something... softer.
"Don't have to tell me," he reminds, and Esper feels his lips quirking up on their own.
"Mmhm. I also like Cheerios. Arc was right, they're the best."
Lusa laughs then, irises twinkling. Esper thinks about how he hasn't had a conversation like this in years. It feels good. "You got a sweet tooth, eh?"
"Guilty as charged."
Its weird not to expect yelling, or blows, but he can't say he minds at all. In fact, he wishes things could be this way forever.
He feels like a kid, wishing for an eternity, but that's okay. He's done some sillier things.
"Lusa , I..." He stops again, a mixture of a million ways to say 'thank you' hanging at the tip of his tongue, none feeling quite right. He looks at Lusa, at the way his eyes are softly looking back at him, waiting patiently. Esper swallows, unable to bear such a gaze. He looks down at the carpet.
"It's fine, Es," Lusa says when he stays quiet for a moment too long. Even his voice is soft. He's so different from the first time they'd met.
Esper's brows furrow at the nickname. "Es?" he echoes.
"Ah, don't like it?"
"No, no, I mean... I like it... Just, no one has..." Color rises to Esper's cheeks.
"I like calling you Es. Fits ya!" Lusa grins ear to ear and Esper curses himself for being unable to look for more than a split second each time. A smile tugs at his own lips, though, and something tugs at his heart as well.
"I'll call Arc," Lusa announces after a while. "We can play with him if you'd like."
Espee finds himself nodding, for once not jumping out of his skin when Lusa twists towards the staircase and calls out Arc's name.
It's exhilarating.
