Very interesting to me that a certain subset of the BES fandom's favourite iterations of Mizu and Akemi are seemingly rooted in the facades they have projected towards the world, and are not accurate representations of their true selves.
And I see this is especially the case with Mizu, where fanon likes to paint her as this dominant, hyper-masculine, smirking Cool GuyTM who's going to give you her strap. And this idea of Mizu is often based on the image of her wearing her glasses, and optionally, with her cloak and big, wide-brimmed kasa.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And what's interesting about this, to me, is that fanon is seemingly falling for her deliberate disguise. Because the glasses (with the optional combination of cloak and hat) represent Mizu's suppression of her true self. She is playing a role.
Tumblr media
Take this scene of Mizu in the brothel in Episode 4 for example. Here, not only is Mizu wearing her glasses to symbolise the mask she is wearing, but she is purposely acting like some suave and cocky gentleman, intimidating, calm, in control. Her voice is even deeper than usual, like what we hear in her first scene while facing off with Hachiman the Flesh-Trader in Episode 1.
This act that Mizu puts on is an embodiment of masculine showboating, which is highly effective against weak and insecure men like Hachi, but also against women like those who tried to seduce her at the Shindo House.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And that brings me to how Mizu's mask is actually a direct parallel to Akemi's mask in this very same scene.
Tumblr media
Here, Akemi is also putting up an act, playing up her naivety and demure girlishness, using her high-pitched lilted voice, complimenting Mizu and trying to make small talk, all so she can seduce and lure Mizu in to drink the drugged cup of sake.
So what I find so interesting and funny about this scene, characters within it, and the subsequent fandom interpretations of both, is that everyone seems to literally be falling for the mask that Mizu and Akemi are putting up to conceal their identities, guard themselves from the world, and get what they want.
It's also a little frustrating because the fanon seems to twist what actually makes Mizu and Akemi's dynamic so interesting by flattening it completely. Because both here and throughout the story, Mizu and Akemi's entire relationship and treatment of each other is solely built off of masks, assumptions, and misconceptions.
Akemi believes Mizu is a selfish, cocky male samurai who destroyed her ex-fiance's career and life, and who abandoned her to let her get dragged away by her father's guards and forcibly married off to a man she didn't know. on the other hand, Mizu believes Akemi is bratty, naive princess who constantly needs saving and who can't make her own decisions.
These misconceptions are even evident in the framing of their first impressions of each other, both of which unfold in these slow-motion POV shots.
Mizu's first impression of Akemi is that of a beautiful, untouchable princess in a cage. Swirling string music in the background.
Tumblr media
Akemi's first impression of Mizu is of a mysterious, stoic "demon" samurai who stole her fiance's scarf. Tense music and the sound of ocean waves in the background.
Tumblr media
And then, going back to that scene of them together in Episode 4, both Mizu and Akemi continue to fool each other and hold these assumptions of each other, and they both feed into it, as both are purposely acting within the suppressive roles society binds them to in order to achieve their goals within the means they are allowed (Akemi playing the part of a subservient woman; Mizu playing the part of a dominant man).
Tumblr media
But then, for once in both their lives, neither of their usual tactics work.
Akemi is trying to use flattery and seduction on Mizu, but Mizu sees right through it, knowing that Akemi is just trying to manipulate and harm her. Rather than give in to Akemi's tactics, Mizu plays with Akemi's emotions by alluding to Taigen's death, before pinning her down, and then when she starts crying, Mizu just rolls her eyes and tells her to shut up.
Tumblr media
On the opposite end, when Mizu tries to use brute force and intimidation, Akemi also sees right through it, not falling for it, and instead says this:
"Under your mask, you're not the killer you pretend to be."
Tumblr media
Nonetheless, despite the fact that they see a little bit through each other's masks, they both still hold their presumptions of each other until the very end of the season, with Akemi seeing Mizu as an obnoxious samurai swooping in to save the day, and Mizu seeing Akemi as a damsel in distress.
And what I find a bit irksome is that the fandom also resorts to flattening them to these tropes as well.
Because Mizu is not some cool, smooth-talking samurai with a big dick sword as Akemi (and the fandom) might believe. All of that is the facade she puts up and nothing more. In reality, Mizu is an angry, confused and lonely child, and a masterful artist, who is struggling against her own self-hatred. Master Eiji, her father figure who knows her best, knows this.
Tumblr media
And Akemi, on the other hand, is not some girly, sweet, vain and spoiled princess as Mizu might believe. Instead she has never cared for frivolous things like fashion, love or looks, instead favouring poetry and strategy games instead, and has always only cared about her own independence. Seki, her father figure who knows her best, knows this.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But neither is she some authoritative dominatrix, though this is part of her new persona that she is trying to project to get what she wants. Because while Akemi is willful, outspoken, intelligent and authoritative, she can still be naive! She is still often unsure and needs to have her hand held through things, as she is still learning and growing into her full potential. Her new parental/guardian figure, Madame Kaji, knows this as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
So with all that being said, now that we know that Mizu and Akemi are essentially wearing masks and putting up fronts throughout the show, what would a representation of Mizu's and Akemi's true selves actually look like? Easy. It's in their hair.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This shot on the left is the only time we see Mizu with her hair completely down. In this scene, she's being berated by Mama, and her guard is completely down, she has no weapon, and is no longer wearing any mask, as this is after she showed Mikio "all of herself" and tried to take off the mask of a subservient housewife. Thus, here, she is sad, vulnerable, and feeling small (emphasised further by the framing of the scene). This is a perfect encapsulation of what Mizu is on the inside, underneath all the layers of revenge-obsession and the walls she's put around herself.
In contrast, the only time we Akemi with her hair fully down, she is completely alone in the bath, and this scene takes place after being scorned by her father and left weeping at his feet. But despite all that, Akemi is headstrong, determined, taking the reigns of her life as she makes the choice to run away, but even that choice is reflective of her youthful naivety. She even gets scolded by Seki shortly after this in the next scene, because though she wants to be independent, she still hasn't completely learned to be. Not yet. Regardless, her decisiveness and moment of self-empowerment is emphasised by the framing of the scene, where her face takes up the majority of the shot, and she stares seriously into the middle distance.
To conclude, I wish popular fanon would stop mischaracterising these two, and flattening them into tropes and stereotypes (ie. masculine badass swordsman Mizu and feminine alluring queen but also girly swooning damsel Akemi), all of which just seems... reductive. It also irks me when Akemi is merely upheld as a love interest and romantic device for Mizu and nothing more, when she is literally Mizu's narrative foil (takes far more narrative precedence over romantic interest) and the deuteragonist of this show. She is her own person. That is literally the theme of her entire character and arc.

The insane thing to me about half the "critique" about LLB is about "fetish". I really just need y'all to come out and say you hate gay women and the art they make, cuz white male directors have been making mountains of film of the kinky shit they're into but god forbid A woman be buff and framed as sexually desirable and a singular five second scene of her greasy butch suckin' a toe. Y'all need to grow the fuck up or go back to watching children's television if you can't handle dykes being anything more than angelic sexless intellectuals.

a rejected idea from the Second Triumvirate novel I keep writing
at one point, I wanted Antony's rescue of Octavian to mirror the execution of Antyllus but the event that inspired the whole idea (as recorded by Appian) is too fun for that kind of wholesale reinvention
Octavian with his friends and a few attendants came into the forum intending to intercede with the people and to show the unreasonableness of their complaints. As soon as he made his appearance they stoned him unmercifully, and they were not ashamed when they saw him enduring this treatment patiently, and offering himself to it, and even bleeding from wounds. When Antony learned what was going on he came with haste to his assistance. When the people saw him coming down the Via Sacra they did not throw stones at him, since he was in favour of a treaty with Pompeius, but they told him to go away. When he refused to do so they stoned him also. He called in a larger force of troops, who were outside the walls. As the people would not allow him even so to pass through, the soldiers divided right and left on either side of the street and the forum, and made their attack from the narrow lane, striking down those whom they met. The people could no longer find ready escape on account of the crowd, nor was there any way out of the forum. There was a scene of slaughter and wounds, while shrieks and groans sounded from the housetops. Antony made his way into the forum with difficulty, and snatched Octavian from the most manifest danger, in which he then was, and brought him safe to his house.
Appian, Civil War, 5.68
HOWEVER. I am DEEPLY enamored by the idea of Antony showing up as a rescuer but for a brief moment looks like such a threat (along with horrible foreshadowing visuals) that I decided to memorialize the original idea as an illustration before I throw it out and get to rewriting it (I’ll probably keep some version of the original thought in for a good old fashioned nightmare dream sequence tho)

original thief series basso & garrett :)
ngl, it's about quality over quantity for me. an npc can have a total of three minutes of screen time, but if they have a cool name, they can live rent free in my head and I'll spend several hours trying to decipher drawable features from a blurry screenshot of pixels
there is a vague hint of a story here, and that's because every time I try to play thi4f, I get incredibly frustrated with how Not Fun the game play is. like, is the story good? well. but it has a PLAGUE. that should've given it instant 'I'll replay this once a year' status in my heart, but the game play sucks so bad that I've never finished it. I can't believe Not Fun gameplay beat out my obsession with narrative plagues.
anyway, the idea is basically if the original era had a game with a plague centric narrative and some other stuff I liked out of thi4f thrown into a narrative blender, with a heavy dash of horror thrown in because some parts of the thief games were scarier to me than entire dedicated horror genre games.
⭐ places I’m at! bsky / pixiv / pillowfort /cohost / cara.app
#if i had a laptop and the skillset i would attempt a story mod because the thief modders who create whole mission stories#are GENIUS and also somewhat terrifying. love them! xoxox#anyway im actually kind of obsessed with parts of thi4f but its also like. not at that sweet spot of almost good enough to be fun#to talk about. which. for the record. has not stopped me from talking about it at length to people#the city itself actually fucking fascinates me. its almost alive and im SO mad that not a single part of that game is actually terrifying#it should be gnarlier and instead it feels a bit like it doesn't quite want to be trapped in the story it has to tell?#but between the level that has the bodies on the meathooks#and the scene with the bodies hanging from the rafters or whatever that was and garrett living in a clock tower#because the game is very much ALMOST about changing times and authoritarian violence and capitalism#(like. by virtue of how the story sort of spins out i think it misses it's mark on a lot of stuff here#in the sense that i dont feel like it actually wants to tell that story. it wants to. go in a different direction. or at least walk on top#of those themes instead of through it)#ANYWAY between all of those things. it does kind of live in my head rent free. they did create a compelling setting#SHAME THEY DIDNT WANT TO ACTUALLY EAT ANY OF IT#unrelated but i would've given thi4f a 10/10 if they kept garrett's fucking nail polish from the concept art. cowards. unforgivable#thief the dark project#i still have no idea how to tag the game series as a whole RIP#sorry for the dedicated dark project fans. if you know what the general series tag is. please let me know#garrett thief#basso thief

Forever bummed by how boring demon fights are..... They're constantly present in the lore/story as a threat and being dangerous because they target you mentally is their Whole Thing, and well. That's kinda hard to implement into an arpg combat system ig. But it still bugs me that demons are barely more than any other random mob encounter.... Wished they'd at least idk, grant negative status effects? Maybe a sloth demon slows you down, or a pride demon prevents healing, or a fear demon reduces hit chance...... Or something. Or at least don't put them into every other sidequest.

Fuck whatever DC is doing with the al Ghul's characterizations and story lines, I've decided that from now on the al Ghul's are gonna be DC's version of the Addams Family instead.
Now I don't mean just give the various al Ghul's the exact personalities of the various Addams and call it a day. That's boring, that erases all the interesting parts of the al Ghuls, that's just using "find & replace" and not actually adding anything. I mean give them the vibes of the Addams Family.
Keep the al Ghul's as the al Ghul's with all their scheming and machinations and world domination attempts but give them all the unhinged energy, the casually insane view of the world, the deranged levels of love and devotion for family. Make them that group where objectively they are batshit insane but also you cannot argue with the fact that they are indisputably the most stable and functional family in the entire universe.
They're creepy, they're kooky, they're mysterious and spooky. Ra's many opulent homes and impenetrable fortresses are a museum and the al Ghul's really are a screa-um whenever people come to see-um (or when they lay waste upon their enemies in a surprise attack that has been planned for months and is just the first domino in a series that will ultimately lead to achieving a far greater goal).
They all love each other and want each other to be happy, they express this primarily with stabbing and murder attempts (its fine, death is a thing that happens to other people).
And forget the League of Assassins being a cult. Just make the whole vast globe spanning organization a collection of cousins/aunts/uncles/dear old friends ect. No one (not even the al Ghuls, if they cared to keep track of such things) is sure who is actually related to them and who just got absorbed into the ever expanding family tree based on their vibes being right.
(Is Sensei Ra's father you ask? Well he's certainly someone's father - probably.
Anyway have you heard about Cousin Cheshire? Despicable poisoner of a young woman, capable of the most horrific things imaginable - yes she is the sweetest dear. Like I was saying though, she just had a baby!
Everyone in the family is just so excited to throw a baby shower to celebrate! Ubu has really gone all out with the spike traps, he does so love getting to welcome a new addition to the family.
Talia of course has cultivated a brand new strain of the most toxic plants imaginable to make a brand new kind of necrotizing poison. You know, as a nice little romantic gift for Cousin Cheshire and that young man of hers. It really is so important to make sure you take time for you and your partner to go on dates and have a few pitched battles to the death on dark rooftops in the pounding rain when you have children.
Now there is some to-do about it all of course, you know how family get together can be. Everyone is arguing over who should get to give little Lian her first weapon and what it should be. Nyssa is pushing for grenades but Ra's is insisting on a sword - he's traditional like that you know - but Dusan has the vote so far on throwing knives. You know the kind that have the little divots along the edges of the blades them to make it easier to get the poison you dip them in to stick.)
I'm just saying that the al Ghuls should be a delightful cross between the Bond Villains they were originally conceived as and the lovingly unhinged Addams Family. It just feels correct in my heart.
(Again keep the interesting aspects of the characters and the nuances of who each of them are like their drive to save the world through destroying humanity and their strong environmentalist leanings and their constantly playing 5D chess and everything, but like, take away the racism and the cartoonishly evil for no reason bullshit and give them some fun feral energy to go along with it).
#batman#ra's al ghul#al ghul family#talia al ghul#nyssa raatko#cheshire dc#sensei dc#no more racism and fucked up dark family dynamics#the al ghuls aggressively adore each other#violence and schemes is their love language#in the full au version of all of this i'd like to imagine how canon plot points change with the al ghuls having these vibes#Just imagine Damian still trying to kill Tim when he first ends up in Bruce's care#but instead of it being a ploy to get rid of a threat its because he's just so excited to meet one of his big brothers#and attempted murder is just how you tell someone in your family that you love them#Tim just SO CONFUSED because Damian is talking so animatedly about how happy he is to get to have some brotherly bonding with Tim#while ACTIVELY trying to run him through with a sword#idk how things change with Cass exactly but i feel like they would in this#like either David Cain isn't an absolute monster or the al ghuls catch wind of what he's doing & are like#This is NOT how al ghuls treat family! what is this shameful behavior! She can't even insult you while you fight!#fighting and violence is a perfectly healthy way to express your love but only if there's actually LOVE involved!#The Heretic & other Damian clones still get made but only because Talia just misses her son so much that she makes more of him#Nyssa has just been bopping around the world for a few centuries & pops up every now and then to have a death match with her baby sister#i just have a lot of strong feelings about the al ghuls deserving better and combined that with the vibes of my favorite unhinged family#Dick still hates Talia but Talia takes all his insults as her darling step son telling her how much he loves her#which only drives Dick even crazier#Tim rocks up to the League of Assassins during his whole trying to prove Bruce is alive thing already seen as an al ghul#Oh yeah that's Cousin Timothy he's one of Talia's kids - never met a truer al ghul in your life#You see how he blew up all those bases? Ra's cried he was so proud#Ra's spoils his grandkids absolutely rotten which is giving Bruce SO MANY gray hairs

PLS PLS PLS make a part 2 of gamer bf gumi 😭😭 i really love your stories and this one made me cackle
gamer! megumi x fem reader part twoooo <333
megumi's twitch was blowing up. he was trending on twitter, youtube, and all the other social platforms because of what happened last time. he had to clarrify on his channel that what happened was a mistake and people ate everything he said. from his appology to his new videos, everything. the comments were now filled with, "bring the hot girl back," "she's so hot, makes me gay," "i could let her get me pregnant," yk? usual internet stuff.
"megs, look at these comments," you said, laughing your ass off as you read them out loud. "i bet she's with him because of his big-" you snorted mid sentense, clutching your stomach as your bent forward, laughing so loudly that it echoed through the big apartment. "your fans are amazing."
megumi kept a good job at keeping a straight face, but he's the most monogomous person ever. he would get mad if a guy just stared at you, and now that they were commenting all kinds of stuff just made him even more... furstrated. "yeah." he sighed, his face burried in his phone, reading the statistic reports of his account. you frowned, crawling to him and plopping your legs on his lap that he covered with his hand, caressing your thighs with his thumb.
"is something wrong megs?" you asked, twirling your fingers in his hair, and gently massaging his scalp. megumi wasn't nesessarily the most affectionate person. it took him two months to even kiss you, and even longer to have sex with you. the most affectionate he had even been was just cuddling you when you're on your period, or hugging you when your sad. other than that, his idea of affection was sitting on opposite side of the bed while you read a book, and he played call of duty on his phone.
he sighed, looking up from his phone to meet your gaze. he just nodded, looking at his phone once again. your eyebrows brunched together as you snatched his phone. "hey!" he groaned, you placed his phone on the coffee table as you stradled yourself on his lap. his hands automatically going to your waist and resting lowly, barely touching you, just grazing ever so slightly. his chin was tilted up to meet your soft brown eyes, his jawline sharp, almost slicing through.
"what's wrong?" you asked again, your hands wrapped around his neck as he sighed into the hollow of your neck. his cheeks flushed as his lips pursed into a thin line.
"it's a bit embarassing..." he sighed, you frowned, leaning back to look at him with concern and worry in your eyes, "no no, not that kind of embarassing." he stopped again, sighing deeply before closing his eyes and looking at you again. "i just don't like how everyone is fawning over you. it makes me..." he paused, "i dont know. it makes me uncomfortable, and very furstrated. i don't mean to be rude, but you are one of the smartest person i've ever met, but sometimes, you're so oblivious it makes me laugh." you gasped, making him chuckled as he wrapped his hands around your waist tighter, "but... this... it.." he sighed, his words not forming in his mouth. "i just dont like it when people just say things about you. it's rude and impolite."
you smiled at his words. megumi was usually very mean to you during sex, more dominant and rather aggressive and seeing him like this was new and... nice.
"it's not embarassing," you said, feeling his warm breath hitting your neck as he nuzzled closer to you, "hey, look at me." you sighed, "have you been feeling neglected lately?" you asked. his cheeks darkened as his eyes widened for a brief moment before his expression went back to normal. "megumi!" you said, stretching the vowel to immitate a mocking whine which made him tsk and push you off of his lap.
"stop, y/n." he said in a firm voice, "you're making fun of me and i don't like that. i'm trying to be open here, and you're..." he trailed off, making you sigh, "i don't know." he breathed out, running his hand through his silken raven hair. you got up, walking to him and hugging him from behind, tip-toeing to kiss his shoulder.
"i'm sorry, megumi. come on, i will help you feel a little... less neglected." you grinned. he turned to look at you with a frown, you bit your lip and kissed him lightly before you dragged him to the sofa. "sit here, and come in when i call you," you instructed, "okay?"
"what are you up to?" he asked with a big grin. you had a little something planned. it wasn't something special but just enough to make the both of you happy. you decided to wear your favourite lingiere to surprise him and then you brought your phone, setting it on the tripod and turning the camera on.
"megumiii!" you called him. your heart throbbed against your chest as you looked around the dimly lit room. the candles added a beautiful romantic vibe to the room. the sheets were clean and the room looked fairly beautiful, and with you in the center, it might as well be called heaven.
"y/n, i swear if it's something-" he swallowed his words as soon as he saw you. the seductive pose you striked was in no way shape or form seductive, to be honest, you felt funny in that position, but the outfit, matched with the light innocent make-up and loose hair. he was going insane.
"you said it made you feel furstrated that they were so focused on your girlfriend, right?" you asked, leaning in to grab him arm and pulling him onto the bed, but he just stood there. his legs encaging you, "why don't you take your furstrating out on me?" you whispered, your voice trailing up his ear, leaving goosebumps as his hands gently caressed your arm. "and show it to them." you pointed at the camera recording, and his eyes followed. his cheeks reddened as he looked back at you. he tilted your face by his fingers, placed firmly under your chin and kissed your deeply. your elbows behind you for support.
you felt his hand push you down onto the bed as he hovered on top of you. his hands slid beneath your thin lace dress, making you gasp from his cold touch, he took it to advantage and explored every inch of your mouth that was his. you pulled back for a second, taking his sweatshirt off as he panted again, his raven hair falling on his face, covering a slight bit of his flushed face. you breathed out deeply before you kissed him again, this time the kiss slower. more passionate. more intimate.
you moved your hands to trace his abs and bring his body closer to yours by pulling him with the strap of his pants. he breaks the kiss, looking at you with lust in his eyes and his mouth practically drooling at the sight of his pretty girlfriend all dressed up for him and the fact that it was recording, just added fuel to the fire. god knows, how many times he will jerk off to it.
"this is going to be a long night, sweatheart."
ending in a cliff-hanger because i like it how it is and also cuz i'm lazy. sorry for not posting a lot lately, i've been busy with my finals :( i hope u guys liked this 💗 (p.s. thank you for all the messages!!! they make my dayyy!<33 and plus also, i love the star wars memes ya'll sended 😭)
