Europe 171 years ago today: Battle of Novara (23 Mar 1849) https://buff.ly/2WDj2Bs Revolutionary feeling was still strong in the Italian states, prompting the Pope to flee Rome in November and leading to republics being declared in Rome and Tuscany in February. However the tide was turning. In March Sardinia renounced its truce with Austria but was swiftly defeated at the Battle of Novara and forced to come to terms, while at the same time Naples began its reconquest of the breakaway Kingdom of Sicily. #1840s #1849 #19thcentury #march #austrianempire #cartografia #diplomacy #europe #europeanhistory #historic #historylovers #hungary #instahistory #italianunification #italianhistory #historyofitaly #map #mapa #mapmaking #maps #march23 #italia #victorian #victorianera #welovehistory #welovemaps #yearrevolutions #todayinhistory #historytoday #thisdayinhistory (at Novara, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/B-EaH_XAF9h/?igshid=19jcm3hsn9xeo

Italy Kingdom Proclaimed
1860: Since the fall of the Roman Empire Italy was broken up into pieces with many of those pieces controlled by outsiders.  There had been bright periods, such as the Renaissance and the influence of Florence but even then, disunity and foreign invasion – until now, in 1860.  With heroes such as Garibaldi and help from Napoleon III Italy was finally united under one government.  This series tells that story.

Europe 160 years ago today: Solferino and its Aftermath (25 Aug 1859) https://buff.ly/2Lb9V3t After the Austrian defeat at Magenta, the people of Parma, Modena and the northern Papal States rose up in support of Sardinia. However, Austria wasn't finished and at Solferino she inflicted enough damage on the French to help persuade Napoleon III to halt the war. Disgusted, the Sardinian Prime Minister resigned. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #1850s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1859 #august #august25 #austrianempire #europeanhistory #italianunification #italianhistory #napoleoniii #piedmont #kingdomofsardinia #carta #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Solférino) https://www.instagram.com/p/B1lCrAPArvu/?igshid=1r8mube9wfrhj

Europe 170 years ago today: Fall of the Last Roman Republic (03 Jul 1849) https://buff.ly/2XlZcfn The formation of the new Roman Republic and expulsion of the Pope had been an affront to the Catholic powers of Europe. While Austria invaded the new Republic from the north, the French, despite their own recent republican revolution, landed troops in the south and laid siege to Rome. Eventually the Roman defenses gave way and their leader, the already famous revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi, was forced to flee through the enemy lines to San Marino and then abroad with his small army of Italian patriots. #europe #history #welovehistory #welovemaps #map #1840s #19thcentury #victorianera #victorian #1849 #europeanhistory #yearofrevolutions #nationalism #germanconfederation #italianunification #july #july3 #romanrepublic #vaticancity #yearrevolutions #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #cartography #geopolitics (at Rome, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BzctkPGAUVr/?igshid=sd3sd215osqj

Europe 160 years ago today: Battle of Magenta (04 Jun 1859) https://buff.ly/2Wp69vF In April 1859 Sardinia deliberately provoked an Austrian invasion, giving the French under Napoleon III an excuse to rush to her aid. The French armies used railways to swiftly cross Italy, with the combined Franco-Sardinian forces smashing the Austrians at Magenta a month later. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1850s #1859 #austrianempire #europeanhistory #frenchempire #italianunification #june #june4 #napoleoniii #piedmontsardinia #kingdomofsardinia #maps #italianhistory #todayinhistory #historytoday #welovehistory #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #worldhistory #19thcentury #victorianera #nationalism #risorgimento #battleofmagenta (at Magenta, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByR4fmyACRM/?igshid=ndcyejjcf58d

Europe 158 years ago today: Kingdom of Italy (17 Mar 1861) https://buff.ly/2TRfQRt The conquest of the Two Sicilies left the Kingdom of Sardinia in control of the entire Italian peninsula except for the French-garrisoned Papal States and the Austrian controlled northeast. On March 17 the Kingdom of Italy was proclaimed, with the former Victor Emmanuel of Sardinia as its ruler. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1860s #1861 #europeanhistory #italianunification #italy #march #march17 #napoleoniii #piedmontsardinia #kingdomofsardinia #piedmont #twosicilies #garibaldi #maps #kingdomofitaly #regnoditalia #italianhistory #victoremmanuel #risorgimento #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historynerd #historygeek #worldhistory (at Florence, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BvGW2u0gIrM/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1kbffjtulgfmz

Europe 159 years ago today: Expedition of the Thousand (29 May 1860) https://buff.ly/2I3ez1U In return for French support, Sardinia ceded Savoy and Nice to France. Free to move south, the Sardinians secretly sent the famed Italian revolutionary Giuseppe Garibaldi with a thousand volunteers to land in Sicily and overthrow the powerful Kingdom of the Two Sicilies. #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1860 #1860s #europeanhistory #italianhistory #historyofitaly #italianunification #italy #may #may29 #napoleoniii #piedmontsardinia #kingdomofsardinia #maps #kingdomofsicily #kingdomofnaples #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #welovehistory #historybuff #historynerd #historygeek #19thcentury #victorianera #cartography #risorgimento (at Palermo, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/ByCerNTAC6D/?igshid=i7c3mod9gtui

Europe 160 years ago today: Franco-Sardinian Alliance (24 Jan 1859) https://buff.ly/2W9iEb7 By the late 1850s, the cause of Italian unification was drawing widespread support from intellectuals and radicals across Europe. After narrowly surviving an assassination attempt by one such group, Napoleon III of France decided he would secretly back the Kingdom of Sardinia in an attempt to unite northern Italy (in return for territorial concessions, of course). #europe #history #welovemaps #map #1850s #1859 #europeanhistory #frenchempire #napoleoniii #napoleon3 #italianunification #italianhistory #frenchhistory #january #january24 #kingdomofsardinia #piedmontsardinia #prussia #worldhistory #victorianera #maps #todayinhistory #historytoday #historyteacher #historybuff #historygeek #historynerd #piedmont #19thcentury #nationalism (at Turin, Italy) https://www.instagram.com/p/BtAq3MTA8z0/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1t47zia7hkjt9
