I've gone my whole life thinking people were right to say that Belle is a Ravenclaw, and after watching the original Disney animated version I think I can safely say this: Belle is NOT a Ravenclaw.

Here's Why.

She's a Gryffindor.

Textbook case.

One of the worst I've ever seen.

To start, let's re-cap the qualities of Ravenclaw vs those of Gryffindor

RAVENCLAW

~Basic Qualities~

• Wit

• Wisdom

• Learning

• Intelligence

~Extrapolation~

• Problem solving

• Insatiable intellectual curiosity (asking the 'what if's' of life)

• Extensive reading/study for the betterment of the mind.

GRYFFINDOR

~Basic Qualities~

• Courage

• Chivalry

• Daring

~Extrapolation~

• Stubbornness

• wanderlust (desire for adventure- many Gryffindors seek jobs that travel widely and offer adenvture)

• talent for mischief (almost every famous Gryffindor is notorious for getting into trouble - even ones considered to be goody-goodies)

• insatiable spacial curiosity (aka snooping. Curiosity for Gryffindors regards their surroundings, where Ravenclaw curiosity tends to manifest in a more theoretical, academic plane)

This could be why Gryffindor/Ravenclaw hatstalls are so prevalent- because it takes time to differentiate and weigh their shared qualities beyond the surface. Now keep in mind that the sorting hat tends to weigh the motivations that drive certain qualities, rather than the qualities themselves.

So let us ask this - yes Belle reads a lot. But WHY does Belle love to read? WHAT kind of books does Belle enjoy?

Novels. Fantastic romantic adventure novels.

She wants, as she so eloquently states in her song, adventure.

And let's now look at her behaviour through the story

• She makes what could be considered reckless decisions ("Take me instead!)

• she displays courage (both reckless and true)

• she snoops around in specifically forbidden areas

• never actually admits any wrongdoing after she is caught snooping around

• does not take no for an answer

• passes up a vault full of knowledge in favour of adventure (ie, snooping around)

Think about it

Harry Ron and Hermione are all famous for snooping around out of bounds and after hours (though a difference could be pointed out here that their snooping always has a purpose and they know exactly what rules they're breaking and why, and have decided that the risk is worth it. But MANY other Gryffindors share this reputation for going out of bounds, and for less altruistic reasons, to wit...)

Fred and George also famous for breaking rules, and The Marauders seemed to be at Hogwarts to do nothing BUT get into trouble.

Of course you can juxtapose them with more straightlaced types, like for instance Prof McGonnagall, though she falls under a very specific subtype of Gryffindor: Too Narrow Minded to be a Ravenclaw. Very studious. Very intelligent; but not at all interested in pressing the envelope in terms of what is "possible". As much as I respect Minerva Mcgonnagall, she Learns in order to accumulate knowledge for later use, not for the love of learning itself. I call this stagnant assimilation, and it's a quality she shares in common with Hermione (though in Hermione's case this is much, much more pronounced.)

Now you wanna talk about a REAL Ravenclaw?

Let's talk about Ariel.

This is great juxtaposition, since Ariel and Belle are the heroines of movies that came out back to back.

Like Belle, Ariel feels out of place where she lives and longs to leave.

Also like Belle Ariel is curious and takes an opportunities to explore.

The first, immediate difference I suppose is that Ariel has had lots of opportunity to explore for much of her adolescence, where Belle is more forcefully sequestered simply by circumstance that there's not much adventure of any kind to be had in the Provincial France (while Ariel is still only exploring locally she's had run-ins with adevture that Belle is probably insanely jealous of. SHARK CHASES, i mean come on!) and must satisfy herself with reading exciting stories.

But as courageous as Ariel is, her desires and motivations are telegraphed and stated in a fairly good deal of depth and this reveals the difference in curiosity between these two Princesses.

Belle talks mostly of just leaving; experiencing more than what she has done so far, which lets me conclude that Belle's got true wanderlust and this also hints at that desire for EXPERIENCE being her main motivation. She ends up marrying a rich man who could afford her with that travel while still providing a home base (although that will make him a rather absentee ruler, but that's not what we are discussing here).

Belle needs an adrenaline fix.

Which is why she defies convention, thumbs her nose at a very influential man at the risk of his ire, and directly disobeys her host/ captor when he tells her not to go a certain place. Because in some way, she wants that risk. What could he be hiding? Doesn't matter. She wants to find out because she was told not to look.

Ariel goes exploring ALL the time, and she's also got a place she's been forbidden from going.

That place for Ariel is the Surface.

For Ariel, the motivation to go to the surface isn't idle curiosity. Its a long-standing rule and one she's had trouble following for most of her youth, because she's not looking for the unknown just to get a thrill, but to expand her knowledge of something she's already been exposed to, in a small away.

Finding and collecting surface objects is a passion for her because everything she finds has the potential to teach her something about that world.

She explores because she has a goal and that goal is learning. She doesn't LIKE disobeying her father, but she does so because not exploring limits her opportunity to learn and She. Can't. Stand. It.

It's even implied that the books she's found have helped her learn to read, or perhaps she overheard sailors talking about "fire". What is fire? What is it like, what is it's purpose how does it work? Why does it burn?

"I wanna know what the people know, aske them my questions and get some answers"

Part of the reason Ariel hates living in the same sea her whole life is because ever since she started to learn about the surface, she's found out about so much she never would have without that surface world. She's not just afraid of missing out, she's afraid of living in forced ignorance.

True Ariel also makes some reckless decisions. She also displays stubbornness and curiosity and is unapologetic for disobedience, but her disobedience doesn't invade anyone's privacy (apart from maybe the sailors but I doubt they'd complain) and her recklessness and bravery are merely secondary means to a primary end - learning.

What I Tell Young Newlyweds

I am a writer, and as a writer I must, absolutely must write. I think during this Pandemic Season we have all come to realize that routinely doing certain things for our emotional and mental health is necessary and is good, but what I am talking about as a writer is something different. The simplest illustration -- one which I might use, say, with a child -- would be to try to imagine a bird which can’t fly, a fish which can’t swim. Close, but not quite. A better example (but one which incites a lot of non-artists) would be to try to imagine a man who can’t sire children, a woman who can’t bear children: these are (pro)creative activities (having children) which are hardwired and constituent parts of our identity on biological, foundational levels. There is a sense of death and grieving when one learns they can not have children, sometimes even social stigma and shame.Not being able to write is a little like that, not being able to have a child.

The basic gist of what I am saying is that I have to write… I have to write, and to write is nothing short of midwifing and serving (as a servant) the Story which I am writing. And in no less an affectionate, fully committed, delighting way than as I would sit upon the floor with my toddler child, and play whatever game she choses to have us play. I would equip that Story as I would that child (say, who delights in baking together) with the finest elements I can supply, that she/the Story would be enabled to fully be all she can be in the outwardly creative manifestation of herself/itself. And in this case, as I have done in my previous writings on what I would tell a young parent, I find myself listening and serving Story which I would not expect I would write about, nor for which I expect I personally warrant any reading by you. I don’t think I necessarily have any place but to serve the Story as I feel it leads, which very well may be to show something beyond how poor a servant of the material I might be, yet, at the end of the day, knowing I have done as I should while getting to do as I must.

The Story this morning leads me to this: an older man, right around the time of my wedding, gave me perhaps the most centering piece of advice I’d ever been given in all of life: the two of you will often find yourselves in different emotional spaces, and that is okay. It is both strange and hurtful to me that there are so few moments of sage wisdom (such as this between an older man and a younger me) in my memory, while there are yet countless episodes of impersonal and didactic … “intellectual firehosing” of me. So many times when I speak with younger friends who have just married I try to offer them that little nugget of sagacity I received from that older fellow because it was so good (yet try to do so in a way which isn’t coming across as obnoxiously unsolicited advice).

What I don’t tell my young, newly married friends (likely because I am just now getting a handle on it myself) is that it is actually some process intself to learn how to identify moments when you are (or/and are not) in the same emotional space, despite seeming to be in the same situation together. To throw in a little philosophical flavoring, it is a coming to the subjective awareness of the utterly objective alterity of the other (ie the otherness of your spouse), and the irreconcilable phenomenological subjectiveness of your experience, and that of your spouse, from each other. But, honestly, all philosophical fun I have aside, it might be true to observe that seldom if ever are the two of you in the same emotional spaces, and you certainly aren’t ever in just one emotional space, nor merely in one singular experience. For instance, with the moment of the closing of a new home purchase, one of you may be both excited over owning and stressed about a work situation, while the other is relieved but apprehensive because the mortgage lender was trying to play footsie during the signing, yet both of you have dreamed of the back yard for your children and are thankful to have it now in hand. For one of you owning a home means you finally feel like a real adult, while the other associates home ownership with a dreaded feeling of being situationally tied down. Somehow you have to find a way to be happy and to be sad and to be brave and to be scared around each other, not minimizing the other in their space while you occupy your particular space. A lot of times, for seasons at a time, this means nothing short of dying to your legitimate wants for the sake of the other’s needs, putting what the other needs ahead of getting your want’s met. Oftentimes it means that what you need God will meet, but not through your spouse; God may meet the needs through a friend. I tell the story that while my wife was having to deal with bad bosses at work (an utterly demoralizing set of circumstances causing her to feel entirely unprotected), I was her listening ear while God supplied my need to be heard not through her but through others, some guy buddies (even to this day who listen to me, who cause me to feel heard). I took it as God’s gentleness to my wife that He did not put the burden upon her already heavy laden shoulders, and His goodness to me to supply my needs as even I poured out to her. To my single friends all this should say, however, that if they have not learned how to let God help them not to be entirely lonely when single, being married sometimes won’t help answer that experience: sometimes you are the most lonely in marriage when you suffer but your spouse can not reciprocate, and God your only recourse.

And it may not seem to flow here, but what I also like to tell my young newly wed friends is this: even being often in different places, seldom in the same spaces, there is yet still a magnifying of each, a magnifying of both through being “together” in marriage. Going through the different spaces differently you are yet still “home” for one another. You grow together, even if it is not the same growth, or kind of growth. As a male I am biologically predisposed to want to “share my seed everywhere,” and yet in my soul I am made more, I am finally allowed to actually be and to become, when all other options are given up for this one I call my wife. Some might find that a bawdy thing to say, but when I say my wife makes me more than all the “possibilities” offered in being single, it is an expression at least as true as the bawdy truth. I dafre you to be more demonstrably true.

As I meander through this ponderously long wondering…. It strikes me that there are passages other than 1 Peter 3, for their call to submissive behavior, which generate more dispute, but not many. I necessarily read this passage as a cis-gender male who stays in the home specifically to raise the children, and to support a wife who has a very “toxicly masculine” work environment. (I do this, like Jacob, who did not do “manly” things like hunt as Esau did, but preferred to stay around camp and do “unmanly” things like cook, or so as the ancient, toxic masculinity looked at such things.) I thoroughly believe and insist that it would be a moral crime to deny my wife to function as she were made, as she is called vocationally; similarly it would feel a crime to deny me -- me the more “parenty” or maternal one -- the ability to foster my children’s sense of their worth as my being at home provides me the opportunity for. Moreover, by virtue of who she is and her vocational calling, my wife causes me to feel safe where I have never felt safe, to feel defended where virtually few have ever done, and more than those few others who did ever have done. (I am saying my wife defends me more than my other friends, far more.) We actually joke and say I am the more “maternal”, and she is more “paternal,” and we see the truth in both comments, and accept it. I am the one the kids come to when they seek comfort for a skinned knee, so to speak, and who she is as a mom has little to do with who she is in the home. My wife is the mom who models to her children what it means for a woman to be (vocationally) called into a passion, and what a strong working woman looks like. My grandmother stayed in the home, showing what a strong woman who stayed in the home looked like. Strength is strength, but it seldom looks the same, and my strong wife sings the praises of the strength which stays home to care for children and pray for strangers in the grocery store (praising it as something she isn’t capable of doing).

This is where things must already seem -- and may seem even more (ponderously) -- rambly and messy, but bear with my… well… my gist. For myself, what I read of 1 Peter 3 is “nuanced” to the point that it doesn’t mean what people argue about, and doesn’t at heart need defenses made to circumvent those arguments. What I read is kinda in the same vein as was my father-in-law’s advice: essentially there are going to be differences between each of you, and you are going to need to act relative to those differences if you want to demonstrate Christ to the other as the other needs. Being fully Christ to another is no less than subjecting yourself to them, thus demonstrating a greatness greater than the position or person to which you subject yourself. As is said of Christ, a bruised reed He will not bend… so neither should we.

I read that passage as an artist, a writer, who sees the intent like that of performance installation art: it is meaning, and worth, and value not seperable from being experienced. The winning and respectful, pure conduct, the beauty of the gentle and quiet spirit, the doing of good and not fearing frightful things, these are things which are aspects of God’s character in whose image Male and Female were created. There is no excuse for either male or female to fail to show such things as these qualities of God to one another. I am a cis-gender male and I want to be beautiful, want to be considered as a beautiful thing, so surely my adorning out to be that of an imperishable beauty of character (and not an athletic prowess the likes of which equal an olympian competitor but for which Christ was never described nor applauded), right? Male and Female are equal in the sight of God, or so I assume, so when my equal shows me a respectful, pure conduct and gentle spirit, not fearing either my frightful temper nor the stigma of submission to me, am I not then won over by the representation of God as Christ himself exhibited himself to me, and thusly am challenged by someone equal to me (not lesser) to be better than I am behaving in that moment with my frightful temper? I see no suggestion here that women should be and are to be subjected to memn, but that their choice to do so is for a purpose whose worth is nothing less than the full value of humanity as such resides in either and both of us, male and female, husband and wife. Put simply, wives here are asked to be Christ, which is not “less than” but fully all, to their spouse. If Christ’s death on the cross was meek, and meekness is power unexerted, then is submission not itself a wilful non-exertion of power triumphaning over my “ish” no less laudable (after a fashion) than Christ’s meekness and death on a cross which triumphed over death and Hell?

Julian of Norwhich made the case about the necessary esteem and value inherent to God’s love of Man this way:

“It is the most worship that a solemn King or a great Lord may do a poor servant if he will be homely with him, and specially if he sheweth it himself, of a full true meaning, and with a glad cheer, both privately and in company. Then thinketh this poor creature thus: And what might this noble Lord do of more worship and joy to me than to shew me that am so simple this marvellous homeliness? Soothly it is more joy and pleasance to me than [if] he gave me great gifts and were himself strange in manner.”

Is that not the very submission or subjectifying which Peter is suggesting, but one which is predicated on there being no inequality between male and female? The submission of my wife is not to a role in the home, nor to my (laughably) telling her what to do, but in a way (and from out of her strength) which shelters me in my weaknesses and lifts me up in my lowliness -- just as I hope I do for her. Again, strength (and weakness) look different, and that is okay.

As I understand it, the point of this life (as understood by one receiving the promises of God) is not this earthly life, not the roles we play nor the societal meanings ascribed to those roles, nor the values this world ascribes to such things. And neither are our actions defined according to what those actions “mean” in this world, or within our society. God’s kingdom is about goodness, humility, truth, nobility, righteousness, justice, purity, excellence, praiseworthiness, gentleness, kindness, joyfulness, love, peacefulness, patience, self-control; it’s about living out the classic virtues (and especially those mentioned above) because those things are writ in the fabric of reality as meaningful, and beautiful, and good. A mother is not made a valuable and strong mother simply and only by being in the home and being subject to her husband, but it is her strength to be Christ to her husband as Christ was to the Father in Heaven. “Christ who being in every way equal to God did not count equality with God something to be grasped, but humbled himself, taking the very nature of a servant,” and thus, in such a way, a woman and a mother model to her husband and the father of her children the strength he should exhibit in how he should live towards her… yet it looks different in each situation. My wife’s submission is a form of holy performance art, enacting Christ to me in no other way than one through which I can participate in and experience it. A holy performance art much like a ritual, but a ritual performed over / through the course of lives spent together.

So, yeah, here’s where I try to pull some (if you’ve been paying attention) three disparate streams into one, multi-dimensional thought. Yes, you’re going to be in different places, and that is okay. Yes, you’ll find in each other a home, as even you represent Christ to one another. Yes there is submission involved, but it is a strength itself submitting in order to cover and model to another. Most times (and here’s the pulling together of it all) you submit to the other in their places of need, for their support and healing, being each other just as Christ was in the world to us -- and that for the short time we occupy this life before we are all any longer in different places. There is indeed purpose and beauty to be had, in the suffering, of being in different places so often times. For what this is worth…

Hoo boy.

Okay, first of all, I sincerely apologize for leaving this unanswered so long. Things…happened.

Disclaimer: I haven’t watched Roadside Attraction in a while so I might be slightly misremembering some of it. (It’d probably be a good idea to rewatch it first, but honestly just writing all this has got me riled up enough already. (look emotions are hard okay)

Disclaimer 2: I critique because I love, I swear.

So when it comes down to it, I guess my problems with RA basically boil down to two big things:

1. The overall ‘message’ and how it treats the characters.

2. The weirdness of it existing at that point in the show in the first place.

First things first: look, don’t get me wrong, I’m all for media messages about not being a skeevy jerk and treating women as objects, but the way it was done in this episode was, honestly, just…weird. It basically introduces a character trait for Dipper (and, to a lesser extent, Stan; I mean I know Stan is…Stan, but did anyone really get ‘sleazy pickup artist’ as the vibe from any of his interactions with women that we saw before this episode?) that he was never shown to remotely have before or after (though admittedly there’s not a lot of ‘after’ to begin with), just so he could be taught a lesson about it that he never should have needed in the first place.

Dipper’s problem has always been that’s he’s obsessed with one girl, and he certainly got plenty of embarrassment and woe out of that general experience, but ultimately that was good for him: he loosened up (somewhat), became more understanding and accepting of Wendy’s autonomy, and moved towards being able to deal with rejection while still being friends with her. That’s a satisfying arc and it makes no sense to me that they would suddenly partway reverse it and then use that as a reason to try and take Dipper down this weird incredibly short character arc that he didn’t need.

Is it realistic that you don’t just immediately get over someone even if intellectually accept that you’re not going to be together? Absolutely. But frankly, this is a weirdass time for Gravity Falls to be invoking realism. And regardless, realism does not automatically make for a better story, especially when that story has to be told in 22 minute intervals.

So it’s already weird that the show is portraying Dipper that way, but then what he does is really not all that heinous to begin with. The thing is, Stan is right. Dipper does need practice talking to-well, everyone, really, but especially girls. For God’s sake, the poor guy needed a massively oversized list, a bunch of clones, and a Rube Goldberg-esque plot just to ask Wendy to dance with him, a task he ultimately failed at anyway. (Which, honestly, even aside from intent, makes the whole idea of him successfully managing to actually lead any girls on to any degree pretty dang unbelievable.) And that’s really all he does with any of them, is talk. He doesn’t promise them anything except maybe to stay in touch, which we don’t really have any evidence he wasn’t planning on doing. Hell, even Stan, for all that we’re supposed to see his behavior as Not Good (which, to be fair, it usually is) doesn’t really do anything more than flirt with an apparently receptive woman and then take a walk with her, which is honestly way more honorable than most of Stan’s interactions with people. We’ve certainly seen him treat people way worse than that without getting condemned for it.

And then there’s the whole thing with Candy, which is…really frustrating. She puts Dipper in a situation he’s very, very obviously not comfortable with, demands something of him he never gave her an indication that he was interested in, and then when she doesn’t get what she wants…he has to apologize to her? By ‘admitting’ that he was being an idiot? What?

Like, I know they were going for ‘don’t be a pickup artist’, basically, but what it came off as was more like ‘never interact with women because if you do they’ll immediately start acting like you’re in a relationship with them and expect you to act the same way and sometimes they might do that even if you don’t interact with them (also sometimes they might turn out to be spider women who will eat you)’.

Basically, any time you set out to give the message ‘treat women with respect’ and instead wind up with ‘women are strange, irrational and sometimes horrifying’, I think you’ve really got to step back and reconsider things for a minute.

But what’s especially weird to me is the contrast between this and the way the show treats Mabel’s behavior. Mabel’s been spending pretty much the whole show doing what this episode punishes Dipper for doing. We see her hitting on three boys in rapid succession within the first ten minutes of the show, her desire for a relationship and rather aggressive pursuit of that is the formation of a lot of plots during the show, and she’s only called on it when it gets to the point of hurting her friendships or literally imprisoning boys in her room.

I mean, I’m not trying to pick on Mabel here, or say that the show should have been calling her on that except when it got extreme (like, say, literally imprisoning boys in her room), at which point the show did call her on it. But it’s weird to me that the show then goes out of its way to condemn Dipper for doing basically the same thing except to a lesser degree. I guess you could argue that Mabel was looking for a relationship and Dipper was looking for ‘practice’, but that still doesn’t really work for me; in both instances they have a goal in mind for which the specific other person involved is basically a variable. Why is Mabel wanting an Epic Summer Romance with more or less any boy worse than Dipper wanting to just talk to more or less any girl? And at any rate, Dipper’s attitude in RA hardly seems any worse towards the girls than the attitude Mabel, Grenda and Candy went into the Northwest party with towards the boys, but we’re supposed to take one as being terrible and the other as being perfectly normal girl behavior.

So yeah, there’s that. Now, part two. (Still with me?)

The pacing. This episode makes absolutely no sense to me where it is. You spend 3/4s of the show building up to this big reveal that completely alters the atmosphere, plot, and character dynamics, and now you have all of five episodes to explore all the ramifications of that while ramping up the tension towards the big finale…why would you make one of those a filler episode that has no impact on the plot at all and is so disconnected to anything that it could have been stuck pretty much anywhere else in the show without next to no changes?

Like, okay, I’ll admit, part of why I don’t like this episode is because it doesn’t have Ford in it. And hey, that’s a personal thing. But it’s not just about me wanting MOAR FORD. The thing is, regardless of whether you like him or loathe him or whatever, Ford is, objectively, an incredibly important character. He’s the catalyst for the central plot and driving mystery of the show and the principle catalyst for the oncoming confrontation, his appearance changes pretty much everything that we took for granted about the show before, and just by existing he has a huge impact directly on Stan and Dipper and indirectly on Mabel (in that his interactions with Dipper in turn impact Mabel’s relationship with him). And, again, you have five episodes to explore all this. In one of them Ford’s barely there at all and then in this one he doesn’t even get mentioned. We don’t even get an explanation for why he’s suddenly absent. (I know we do in the Journal, but not in the show itself.) I just…that doesn’t make any sense to me. I mean, maybe I’m showing favoritism here, but-no offense to Candy-I really don’t get why she gets more character focus in this episode than, y’know. The long-lost close family member with massive unresolved issues and a huge amount of secrets.

And it doesn’t make any sense to me to have a light-hearted filler episode with nothing to do with the plot so very close to the finale when the tension is so high and the last episode literally ended with a very ominous threat. It certainly doesn’t make sense in plot terms that they spent so much time last episode working to protect the Shack so they had a sanctuary from Bill, and then everyone runs away from the Shack. I just. What.

And, this is a lesser point, but it doesn’t really make sense to me for them to leave Gravity Falls itself at that point in the show. Just, sure, we know weird stuff exists in plenty of other places, but there’s a lot of focus on there being something especially weird and significant about Gravity Falls specifically. And that’s something that gets really dialed up in this last part of the show-Ford specifically seeking the town out to study, the significance of the Mystery Shack and all its secrets, the connection Bill has to the area, the crashed UFO, and of course it all builds up to a big plot point in the finale that Bill’s confined to Gravity Falls. But then right smack in the middle of all that we briefly detour to some pretty much unrelated location for…what reason? It’s like MYSTERY OF GRAVITY FALLS MYSTERY OF GRAVITY FALLS MYSTERY OF GRAVITY FALLS oh by the way there’s some spider people over here too MYSTERY OF GRAVITY FALLS. It’s not a huge deal but it feels weird to me, especially since the show had hardly been going on so long that that they had worn out the setting.

I know I’m committing the great sin of claiming to know better than the writers, but since we’ve come this far anyway, you know what I think would have worked better than Roadside Attraction?

You’ve already got this idea of the other tourist trap owners annually pranking Stan, so why not just go with that? Have them come to him like they apparently usually do. That way:

-You can keep the focus on Gravity Falls and all the plot points therein.

-You don’t have the problem of everyone inexplicably leaving their sanctuary; in fact, that adds to the plot, because now they have even more motivation to protect the Mystery Shack.

-You’ve got a lot of opportunity for character interplay as the family has to deal with all this (imagine the opportunity for conflict between Ford and Stan over the house, and how much you could build up the oncoming tension of Stan having to leave the Shack by showing how much he had really made it his home over the years).

-You can still hint at the existence of weirdness outside Gravity Falls without taking the focus away from it.

-You could expand on Stan’s past a little-because God knows we all wanted it-by referencing what was going on with him and these other rivals for all these years, and show a bit more about how the Shack actually operates as a tourist trap, which I, at least, would have liked to see.

-You could continue the ongoing character arc of Dipper’s relationship with Ford and how that was impacting his relationship with Mabel, instead of dropping it for something completely out of the blue.

-You could still have a bit of a breather episode before the finale (since that was evidently the reason we got this one here in the first place) without having to completely drop the plot and derail all the building tension to do so.

-Tell me you wouldn’t want to see a full-scale Pines family prank war unleashed, because I sure as hell would.

But anyway, in conclusion:

I don’t like Roadside Attraction much.

While it’s true that queens lacked the explicit powers of the king, they wielded some powerful influences that shouldn’t be overlooked. These influences ranged from subtly manipulating the court through her charisma to explicitly using what powers she did have to alter the turn of events. I wish I could expand upon this topic fully and give extensive examples of the ways in which queens utilized their powers to show that they were truly powerful and interesting figures in their own rights, but that would take a full length paper so for the purpose of this post I’m sticking to the barebones of what roles were notably linked to queenship in the Old Norse construct of it.

The role of the queen as a peacemaker is probably the best written about aspect thanks to the presence of the fridusibb or peace-weaver mentioned a few times in the Angle-Saxon corpus of texts. Essentially, the peace-weaver has been interpreted solely as a woman traded from one kingdom or tribe and married to the king of another in order to make peace between them. Through the marriage bond she wove peace between the nations.but otherwise has been viewed as a glorified captive. Seeing as the Aesir-Vanir War was solved by a hostage exchange - although no marriages - it’s likely this tradition has grounds in Scandinavia as well. However, it’s been argued more recently that peace-weavers could take more active roles than being merely passive pawns traded between nations. For instance, the ritual of cup-bearing was an active role that forged bonds between people, ensuring peace between king and retinue and the members of the retinue themselves. (More on how this was accomplished later.) In addition, she was an active counselor to the king able to help sway his mind to war or peace as she desired.

Queens were also associated with the art of healing. Like noble men were to be skilled in a variety of sports and activities called iþottir, noble women were also expected to be trained in several skill. One of these was healing. As Friðriksdóttir explains:

Another intellectual skill that women possess is healing and medi-cal knowledge. In Gríms saga loðinkinna, Lopthæna, a bewitched princess, takes Grímr back to her cave and heals him in return for sexual favors that release her spell, while another such character, Skinnefja in Þorsteins saga Víkingssonar, heals Þorsteinn after a battle in which he is near-fatally wounded. Princess Ingigerðr in Sturlaugs saga starfsama is beautiful, wise, and a sought-after doctor: “huerri konu fridari fogr at sia en spok at uiti l æ knir allgodr. sottu ok margir menn til hennar þegar þeir miog þurftu” [more beautiful than any other woman, fair to behold, and wise, a good doctor. Many people sought her help when they were in need of healing]

Additionally, when Baldr is killed by Hodr, it is notable that Frigg is the one who speaks. Speech is an act of power in the Norse mindset. This is reflected in the value of poetry and the rune Ansuz. Yet rather than Odin or any of the male Aesir, it is Frigg who speaks out immediately calling for action to try and heal the wound left by Baldr’s death by having someone seek out Hel to request his release. This is in direct opposition to Odin’s violent course of action to get vengeance upon Hodr. Her action seeks to repair his seeks further damage.

The queen’s role was also to keep secrets. In the Anglo-Saxon source Maxims 1, the following advice for king and queen is given:

A king must buy a queen for a price, with cups and rings; both must first be liberal with gifts. War and battle must flourish in the man, and the woman must prosper beloved with her people, be cheerful, keep confidences, be generous with horses and treasures, in the mead-assembly always and everywhere before the troop of retainers first greet the protector of nobles, quickly deliver the first cup to her lord’s hand, and know what is wise for the two rulers of the hall together.

The line “keep confidences” I’ve also seen translated as “keep secrets close”. (I know nothing of OE so I’m relying on various translations to get a scope of meaning.) So queens had a strong role of being secret-keepers. This didn’t apply just to keeping secrets for the king, however. As the queen interacted with the entire retinue of the king and his thegns, she brought the mead cup to them all where words were spoken over the cup. These were often oaths (which leads into her role as taking stock and accounting for oaths) but indicates that she may have also been important in keeping the secrets of those under the king as well, making her a sort of counselor figure to those under her care.

This would make sense as another role of the queen was to provide counsel for the king. In Maxims 1, the line “and know what is wise” is also translated as “and reason with him wisely” indicating the queen’s duty was to provide counsel to the king. It’s common for woman to be sources of heilræði or “sound counsel” in the sagas. The advice of women is sought out. In Hrólfs saga Gautrekssonar, Hrolf is urged to find a woman who possesses “prudence and foresight” over any other qualities, suggesting that these are the important qualities necessary for a queen and in turn suggesting she is a source of wisdom for the king to draw upon. Further examples from Friðriksdóttir:

In an earlier section of the saga, King Hringr’s wife advises her husband against waging war on his friend, King Gautrekr, mentioning the fact that Gautrekr has recently acquired a wise and excellent wife as one of the arguments in favor of keeping the peace: “Hefir hann fengit svá vitra konu ok g óð úsa, at allan ykkarn félagsskap mun hún saman draga ok í lag færa þat, sem áfátter.” [He has acquired such a wise and benevolent wife, that she will bring you back together and put right what has gone amiss in your friendship.] When Þornbjörg relinquishes her status as a maiden-king and marries Hrólfr, the narrator notes that among many other things, she is “vitr ok vinsæl, málsnjöll ok spakr áð ug” [wise and beloved by many, eloquent and wise of counsel]. It is striking that traditional female virtues such as beauty are nowhere mentioned; noble lineage and intelligence are the only criteria against which a prospective wife is to be measured, and eloquence and sound counsel is admired and praised.

As such, the queen held some substantial indirect power potentially by advising her husband in politics through her outstanding wisdom.

However, wisdom wasn’t the only source of knowledge that queens may have been tied to. There’s evidence that queens may have been tied to divination as well. If we look at Frigg again, she is said to know the fates of men but speak no prophecies. This indicates a sort of supernatural knowledge of fate despite the lack of speaking prophecies. Prophecies, however, are specifically linked to seidr in Norse mythology, so this doesn’t rule out her being a practitioner of divination merely the type of divination done. Weaving was strongly tied to knowledge of fate and weaving is a skill that women, including noble women, were expected to know. In addition, in Hjálmþés saga ok Ölvis, Princes Hervör is known to practice the art of divining with stones known as steinaíþróttir. In the most extensive work on this subject, Lady With a Mead Cup, Enright has also convincingly traced links between the queen and prophetesses. I won’t get into his argument here as it would take up time but it would seem there’s multiple points of evidence that divination may have also been an important role for the queen at some point in Old Norse history. Considering the numerous links to women and prophecy/fate throughout the mythology, from the Norns to the valkyries to seidkonas, the likelihood of the queen having some tie to prophecy or predicting fate is incredibly high. More than likely, the ways in which this was acceptable shifted over time and this is possibly reflected in Frigg knowing fate but speaking no prophecies. Seidr wasn’t acceptable for a queen to know but other methods of knowing fate were.

Somewhat tied into fate, and already mentioned above, the queen had ties to oath-keeping. In the mead hall society when the cup of mead was taken around and served to warrior to warrior, it was traditional for warriors to say words over the mead cup. Typically, these words were oaths. Beowulf himself made a promise to kill Grendel over the mead cup when Wealhþēow passed it to him. This tradition of swearing oaths over alcohol is common-place within the Norse and Anglo-Saxon corpus of texts. The concept of the beot was a ritualized boast sworn over mead before a battle. In a variety of Norse texts, we can see examples of men swearing ver their cups of mead or other alcohol to marry certain women such as this example from Hervarar Saga where is it stated “One Yule eve in Bolm Angantyr swore at the Bragi Cup, as then was customary, that he should get the daughter of Yngvi ... or else fall in battle.” This example claims that it was customary to swear over the mead cup - here linked to Bragi and therefore words and poetry - even in Scandinavia.

Last but not least, the queen was strongly tied to shows of hospitality. She was the head lady of the hall and as such it fell upon her shoulders to be the first to greet important guests and ensure their comforts. (This also gave her the first line to a foreign emissary’s ear.) As Maxims 1 reveals, it was also on her to distribute gifts to the kings thegns as “both must first be liberal with gifts” and “the woman must ... be generous with horses and treasures.” This bit also alludes to the queen’s role as keeper of the keys to the storeroom which could be considered a separate role entirely but is mixed strongly up in her role to show hospitality and generosity so t I’m folding it into here. The role of serving the mead in the cup bearing ceremony is also a show of generosity and gift-giving in its own right. It shows that the thegns are welcome in their lord’s hall among their band of brothers and honors them as part of a noble band of warriors serving the king. In addition, it is a gift of alcohol which in and of itself is a precious gift. She clearly also distributed horses, gold, or other treasures at her favor to those who served her and the king well. Maxims 1 informs us it was also her duty in the mead hall to be the picture of a good hostess first and foremost showing hospitality to the king but afterwards to all within it as well.

There is little written exploring this concept but the queen may have also had ties to the land itself. As Lotte Motz explains in her paper “Kingship and the Giants” there is a theme of the sacred king taking on the role of Odin and embracing and marrying the earth, Jord. In addition, Gro Steinsland beleives that the marriage of Freyr and Gerdr represents a union of the king and the land. As Motz summarizes Steinsland’s point: “Freyr’s projected marriage to Gerðr symbolises a holy marriage, the king’s marriage to his realm,and the difficulty he has in obtaining her consent symbolises the king’s difficulty in subduing the land to his control.” It hasn’t really been poked at beyond this from what I’ve seen so far in the literature, but it wouldn’t be surprising to me if there were themes of sacred queenship where the queen embodied the land itself. Of course, noting that there’s little exploration of it, take this perhaps with a grain of salt.

In any case, now I turn to look at the ritual of cup bearing which was incredibly important in the elite hall society of the Norse. The cup bearing was part of the sumbel/symbel ritual. The queen first presented the cup of alcohol to the king, saying words of blessing and advice over the cup as she passed it to him. After he drank, she then took the cup to the man ranking directly below the king, repeating the process of blessings and advice. The cup was passed this way down to the lowest ranking man of the retinue. The queen then returned to her seat beside the king. This ritual was important not just because of the blessings the queen bestowed upon the warriors as she passed the cup along. More importantly, the order in which the cup was passed worked as an affirmation and reminder of the social status rankings within the war band. By being forced to wait or by being privileged to drink ahead of others, social status was enforced. Additionally, by all imbibing form the same cup, this ritual likely bound them together as brothers in an adoptive kinship. This helped to keep the peace among warriors in the war-band which was made of different families but existed in a society where kin was trusted above all. Thus, this ritual of drinking from the same cup worked to bind them together into a symbolic kinship, reforging the bonds of kinship to include each other and not just blood-kin. This ritual was mediated by the queen who worked as peace-weaver to weave these bonds of kin together into one cohesive unit.

Now, this is by no means a deep study of Old Norse queenship but it gives an overview of the roles they were expected to fulfill. In a post soon I will cover how these roles apply today to those being pushed to spiritual Norse queenship roles.

Gem Ascension Tropes (5XF-specific: A - B)

Peridot (Facet-2F5L Cut-5XF)

Accuser of the Brethren: 5XF starts as one to Peridot when she formally meets her sibling on Earth. It’s also noted both through the narrative and the characters that the rest of the refugee Homeworld gems who ever knew of Peridot in her former life are highly likely to fall into this trope as well; 5XF is basically the poster child. While she does acknowledge Peridot having changed for the better and is no longer the gem she once feared, 5XF staunchly believes her sister’s past actions make her undeserving of the success and happiness Peridot had gained when she made Earth her new home. The middle of This is Who I Am is basically 5XF taking out her stress and frustrations out on Peridot because of her refusal to forgive her for what she’s done in the past. 5XF has since come to deeply regret her actions (realizing her behavior was no better than the 5XG she loathed); however, despite acknowledging Peridot not deserving of her treatment, 5XF still heavily dislikes her sister and envies her achievements. Now that Peridot has become a major roadblock in 5XF’s own pursuit of happiness (aka Sphalerite), the latter is even less inclined to grant her sister the forgiveness she seeks. 5XF is no longer vindictive towards Peridot, but it remains to be seen whether or not she’ll stand up for her when the rest of the refugees are released and inevitably give her sister grief over her past misdeeds.

Acting Your Intellectual Age: Matters of romance aside, 5XF consistently acts more mature, more reserved, and more logical than Peridot. Despite being in her early teens like Peridot while having even fewer life experiences than her (which is a more accurate indication of a gem’s maturity than their chronological age), 5XF definitely comes off as the elder of the two Peridots – by far more than six seconds – with her overall calm and analytical nature. While she has her moments, 5XF seems to have a stronger overall grasp of good manners and an even temper when she meets the Crystal Gems. She’s much less antagonistic and stubborn about cooperating with this group than her little sister was, and unlike Peridot, 5XF is not the least bit egotistical.

Adrenaline Makeover: Had Sphalerite not been there to give 5XF a much more palatable tour of Earth than her components, it’s very likely 5XF would have reverted back to her conservative, cautious, and introverted self after her nervous breakdown. While 5XF doesn’t change in appearance, she becomes much more open to new experiences while under Sphalerite’s wing. She finally learns how to have fun while learning about herself; eventually, 5XF is so emboldened by her newfound identity, she ends up acting very quickly on her feelings with Sphalerite (which surprisingly has some logical backing). Needless to say, 5XF went from barely comprehending the concept of love to wholeheartedly embracing it largely thanks to this trope.

Anger Born of Worry: For someone so allegedly eager to see Peridot and/or Steven die in a heavily rigged deathmatch, 5XF threw a major fit when she watched Peridot nearly kill herself (nearly mutilating her own gemstone in the process) just to stop her dark side from strangling both sides of Steven to death. When Peridot regained consciousness, 5XF even warned her to never do something like that again; clearly overwhelmed with worry and concern. Again, peculiar for someone who allegedly longed to see Peridot die here.

Armor-Piercing Slap: Dishes one out on Steven in This is Who I Am Chapter 2 to snap him out of his stupidity-inducing panic attack after Peridot is poofed with her gemstone falling into the water and out of sight.

Artifact of Doom: The golden crystal that’s strongly implied to host the spirit of Gypsum has been in 5XF’s possession since Chapter 4 of This is Who I Am. It has proved to give her power that has temporarily corrupted her (along with the other two crystals she acquired previously) since 5XF agreed to “let Gypsum in” as payment for being able to fight back and resist Steven and Peridot trying to reclaim her. While in possession of said crystal, 5XF went full-tilt psychotic and organized a very sadistic set of death matches for Steven and Peridot that she watched intently to indulge in their suffering. Once her plan to have at least one of them killed was thwarted, Peridot trapped her in a tiny pocket dimension while she and Steven tried to figure out how to solve their problem. Once 5XF was confirmed to be their only way to rectify things, she was let out… and during that small period of time, the golden crystal embedded itself into 5XF’s chest; effectively binding her to it. Since being teleported out of Gypsum’s domain, the crystal ceased to function in any way, but 5XF and the Crystal Gems are fully aware that it’s likely the crystal will become problematic when they return to Gypsum’s domain in the future. Whether or not there are lingering side-effects in 5XF herself remains to be seen.

The Atoner: By Chapter 7 of This is Who I Am, 5XF proves to feel genuine guilt and remorse for what she put Steven and Peridot through in Chapter 5. Though Steven and Peridot already made her suffer for her transgressions (somewhat), 5XF acknowledges that it doesn’t pardon her crimes and that she needs to actively work and cooperate with the Crystal Gems to have a chance at redeeming herself. She stresses that the last thing she wants to be is another 5XG, referring to Peridot’s former life as a Manipulative Bastard who not only regularly got away with murder, but was often rewarded for it. 5XF’s morals may be skewed right now, but there is a clear line she hopes to never cross again.

Aw, Look! They Really Do Love Each Other: 5XF, who loudly proclaims she wants Peridot to die and even forced her into a rigged deathmatch with her boyfriend to ensure this, throws a fit when Peridot nearly kills herself to force the deathmatch to end without a conclusive “winner” (aka both she and Steven survive). Mind you, 5XF isn’t upset because Peridot found a loophole in an otherwise impossible situation and ruined her plans – she’s torn up over watching her sister actually try to mutilate herself to save Steven’s life without any regard for her own. At the same time, she’s trying to save face by berating Dark Steven for healing Peridot’s wound and saving her life when he’s “supposed” to be trying to kill her. However, the moment Peridot wakes up, 5XF immediately runs to her sister, demanding her to never do something like that ever again.

A prelude to this is shown a few chapters earlier: while Peridot uses her powers to antagonize an alligator, 5XF harshly denounces Steven for encouraging her to interact with an animal he just finished telling her was extremely dangerous. Steven’s reaction is to lampshade this reaction mercilessly, and he even tells Peridot about 5XF’s concern for her later on.

Beach Kiss: 5XF and Sphalerite’s First Kiss takes place on a beach.

Because You Were Nice to Me: While Steven and Peridot at least tried their best to be nice and accommodating for 5XF, it wasn’t until Sphalerite showed up that 5XF started to feel she was being treated this way in earnest.

Big “WHAT?!”: 5XF’s immediate reaction to seeing Peridot’s Mismatched Eyes in This is Who I Am Chapter 1.

Big Sister Instinct: She would vehemently deny this, but 5XF has some moments where she does come across as a responsible worrywart of an older sibling to Peridot, despite being a gem who normally would not have such instincts. This can be traced back to well before they met, as 5XF kept an eye on Peridot from afar for many years when they lived on Homeworld. 5XF never directly worked with Peridot, but often monitored her from a distance (admittedly, a large part of this was done for her own safety, as Peridot back then posed as a potential threat to 5XF’s own livelihood if she got too close); this is how she came to realize her little sister was severely repressing a major moment of her life when she got promoted. Later, 5XF visibly showed concern when she criticized Peridot’s ideas for distracting alligators and denounced Steven for encouraging her little sister to wrangle a gator soon after. When Peridot was eventually poofed by a gator, 5XF was quick to straighten out a hysterical Steven and actively participated in retrieving her sister’s gemstone without any hesitation whatsoever. The most blatant instance of this trope happens when Peridot nearly kills herself to end a set of sadistic deathmatches between herself and Steven; said deathmatches were organized by 5XF herself (who was under the influence of corruptive power, along with loads of other issues). 5XF explicitly states she made this so only Steven or Peridot would come out with their life and was openly gleeful to see Peridot’s demise. However, that falls apart when she watches Peridot pierce her own gemstone with a jagged floor tile: 5XF runs to her and is vividly upset with her sister doing this to herself… despite allegedly desiring to see her die. While she berates Dark Steven for healing Peridot rather than finishing her off, she immediately orders Peridot (when she wakes up) to never do that again.

Blessed with Suck: When 5XF becomes a willing vessel for Gypsum’s powers, she proves to be adept with them right away, as she successfully uses them to ward away Steven and Peridot, as well as incapacitate them. However, as time passes and 5XF’s mental state further deteriorates, she finds she not only has no way of knowing how to consistently control her powers, but doesn’t even possess a full understanding of what said powers are. They’re currently dormant within 5XF while she isn’t in Gypsum’s domain, but considering she has a binding contract to this corrupt gem in the form of said powers and a crystal bonded to her chest, it’s a given these powers will be even more problematic than helpful in the future.

Breakout Character: In the primary GA series, she was a one-scene wonder who only got a couple of verbal mentions towards the end. In This is Who I Am, she starts out as a trial for Steven and Peridot, but halfway into the story, the focus on her gradually grows. She even has the entirety of Chapter 6 to herself (and Sphalerite); she continues to be the centric focus in the final chapter and is confirmed to be a key player in future stories (at least as far as Gypsum is concerned). One can easily make an argument for her being every bit as important as Steven and Peridot in the overall story, if not more so.

Brutal Honesty: Doesn’t seem to be any better about this than Peridot, honestly, though 5XF at least expresses her sentiments with more composure than her little sister.
