Hidden Gem is a Gen Z's Thing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
During this time, I loved strolling around the narrow alleys. My introduction to a narrow alley that has a pleasant atmosphere began when i was junior high school. I was live in a area whose the street in the area is connected to dozens of alleys on its sides. exploring alleys surround the area is a pleasant experience back on the days until now. Seeing the community living in the area, how they share the limited space each other, and the friendliness of the locals always makes me happy. As an architecture enthusiast, the houses and buildings with strong local characteristics along these alleys always amaze me and make me realize where I am at the time.
Places that are tucked away in narrow alleys are always more interesting to me. I guess I'm just a curious person who likes challenges. The more hidden a place is, and the more difficult it is to access, the place getting more interesting. As I learned about adaptive reuse of abandoned building to create creative place several days ago, i just found out that hidden gem place is more interesting for young generation nowdays, especially gen Z as a representation of youth today. The most interesting point that Mr. Yacobus told as one of the planner of M bloc space is that the hidden gem is more interesting right now compared by the grande style whichis so 90s. No need to think twice, i'm 100% agree with Mr. Yacobus statement because i'm is one of that gen Z who love hidden gem very much.
Sense of visit hidden gem is different with visited places which can accessed easily by vehicle. Besides of the place is provide the sense of adventure to the visitors before they get to the main destination, the process to get the final destination is also can accommodate my desire to walking. Walking is actually fun for me, but in case of lack pedestrian path in my area and the weather condition, so i rather to going everywhere by vehicle daily.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For me personally, visiting a place is incomplete if there are no historical and culinary elements in it. Fortunately, I was able to visit a place that accommodated the things I was looking for. A hidden gem, with historical and culinary elements, welcome to …. Baan Kudichin Museum!
Baan Kudichin Museum is a mini museum located in Bangkok. The museum is located in the Chao Phraya riverfront neighborhood. From the main road, we have to walk through the riverside promenade and then we will find an old Portuguese church overlooking the river. The Chao Phraya river with its bustle, surrounded by modern buildings in the background across the river being an amazing view along this journey. To reach the Baan Kudichin Museum, we have to walk through a narrow alley beside the church and pass through a path in front of the houses.
A sign that we just arrived at the destination is that there is a Red Chicken logo in front of the gate, with the name of this museum written underneath. Portuguese and Christian nuances are immediately loud when we enter the museum. That's understandable since the museum is located in a Catholic family home. The museum houses and preserves the history of the culture and traditions of the ancient Portuguese-Thai community in the area, and tells the story of the arrival of the Portuguese in Thailand.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The last part that makes this museum a perfect place is that there is a café in this museum. Although there is no tarik tea or boba milk in the café, but it doesn't matter as long as they have coffee. I ordered an iced latte. Honestly there is nothing special about the taste of coffee, but the place and the long journey trough the alleys until I can drink that beverage makes the coffee 100% tastier (because they use original coffee bean which bring by Portuguese 500 years ago i think…ups.. jokiing) and becomes the most special coffee of my life.

DEAR MEMBER OF THE PARLIAMENT
The original letter was published in Müürileht on January 7, 2021. Photo by Tarik Labrighli.
Tumblr media
I turn to you in good faith that you will consider my thoughts as a member of the LGBT+ community and a person for whom the planned referendum is not a thought experiment or ideology, but directly affects my everyday life. The referendum would give power to decide over my personal life to people whose sexual education on homosexual relationships may be limited to Soviet publications [1], the Bible and pornography. It is difficult for me to understand and accept.
President of the Riigikogu Henn Põlluaas, a member of EKRE, has claimed that the division in our society began with the passing of the Registered Partnership Act (Kooseluseadus) [2] in 2014 and is convinced that the spring referendum will give EKRE the desired outcome and marriage will be defined as a union between a man and a woman.
As people and politicians you are well aware of how diverse Estonia is - to bind all its parts together and find balance is a complicated, life-long process that requires constant compromises. This is why it is very hard for me to believe that the ideological divisions in our society were born in 2014 with the passing of the Registered Partnership Act. [3] At best, it helped define the outlines of existing problems. I believe that bringing the Partnership Act and marriage into politics today is in one hand a political play by EKRE that takes advantage of myself and vulnerable minorities, and in the other, an ancient ideological war fueled by religious beliefs [4], as well as the fear of belittlement and extinction of the Estonian people as a global minority [5]. But I digress.
During my lifetime, I have experienced social mobility and seen how the economy affects very different social groups in very different ways. Our economic status determines our social opportunities from life to death: access to quality education, healthcare, hobbies, employment etc. Don’t you think that perhaps rather than the Registered Partnership Act, the “division” in our society is caused by a lack of understanding of socioeconomic equality?
LGBT+ people are equal with others in nature and in God because a person’s sexual orientation (or gender identity) is not a conscious choice. Sexual health experts may affirm you that a person’s innate sexual orientation cannot be changed by force. However, for some reason, we have been getting special treatment [6] by different Estonian governments and as of today are not equal in law. Why not regard the Estonian people in our diversity so that no-one would lose the state’s protection based on their sexuality? [7]
I asked this from an online stranger and was met with a classic reply: “Things have to be clear! A marriage is between a man and a woman, not a man and a man or a sheep. Let them do their things in their bedrooms, not come on the streets with their flags.”
I did not understand why they would be against people running around with flags during our national parades for example, but went on to explain how marriage requires informed consent which you cannot expect from an animal, the same goes for child brides. You could of course understand from the answer that they were not looking for a compromise or the unity of our people, but to send those who are different back to their closets and out of the public’s sight. I do not believe in doing that and hope you have the courage to agree.
We also cannot bury our head when it comes to paedophilia. If our politicians, just as a part of the Estonian people who oppose marriage equality, are frightened of sexual violence against children, then they must understand that no Estonian or European LGBT+ organisation favours or protects such violence. Paedophiles are among all sexual orientations and gender identities, so instead of creating moral panic, it would make more sense to unite these different groups in our society in the fight against such violence and propose bills that would effectively fight child sexual abuse. [8] One effective method would be early sexual education, but for some reason it is the conservatives who oppose it. Unfortunately, the planned referendum nor the Uued Uudised [9] defenses against Peeter Helme [10] can save any little boy or girl raped by their biological parent.
I am one of the lucky ones in many respects. As of today, I am an employed adult with higher education and means to support myself. All things considered, I am happy living in Estonia and I haven’t dreamt of moving to Sweden or Canada [11] for a while. I would rather stay to better the lives of myself and the people in my community, no matter what their orientation, economic or educational background or what hand they write their contracts with.
I am from a family with parents of different sex who have been married for 31 years. I love them dearly and I will forever be grateful for their love and dedication. However, the key to their long marriage and dedication did not come from a contract they signed with the state, but the promises they made to each other and have tried to keep as human beings. Their wedding was secular. [12]
I am not angry. I am tired and sad that I have to keep explaining to people that I am a person like any other, and that I still have to ask to be an equal with my adult heterosexual compatriots in the eyes of the law.
Heinrich Sepp (alias Helgi Saldo) Tallinn, 7.01.2021 [1] Original letter names a popular Finnish sex education book "Sukupuolielämän tietokirja" (Mirja Rutanen, Martti Paloheimo, Mauri Rouhonkoski). [2] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recognition_of_same-sex_unions_in_Estonia [3] Interestingly, it has been argued a larger division was created by the Soviet Union; prior to the Soviet occupation, homosexuality in Estonia was legal, and then legalised again in 1992. [4] In the Estonian anti-LGBT discourse we are often accused of "importing foreign ideologies". Thankfully, people in Estonia are not very religious, so we can argue that any religion from Christianity to Islam is also a "foreign ideology". This is why documenting Baltic LGBT+ history is incredibly important, people need to realise that we have always been here and always will be. [5] This is a very, very real problem when it comes to our national identity and how we construct and preserve it. [6] This is a rebuttal of the argument that LGBT+ people want "special rights" while the truth is we want the same rights as others. So we are not special in the way we want rights, but we are special in the way we are denied rights. Go figure. [7] The Registered Partnership Act was essentially a compromise that said "No, you can't get married, but you may have some basic rights, as a treat". It was also an ideological move so we could show the West and other post-Soviet countries how progressive Estonians are; this unfortunately pissed off the homophobes and religious conservatives who believed that it was just a stepping stone to normalising gay marriage. "Why are you hiding behind this gender neutral bill instead of going for gay marriage?" the opposition would ask, and the coalition would be like: "The Estonian society is not ready!" [8] This is a wonderful idea if I do say so myself. [9] Conservative news page, opposing "mainstream media" etc. They sometimes make wonderful points, but they really are few and far between. [10] The son of Mart Helme's (EKRE) brother who was charged with paedophilia. He was in the Writer's Union of Estonia (Eesti Kirjanike Liit) and they ended up throwing him out  because they didn't want him to "tarnish their reputation" (and not because he was a paedophile, yikes!). The "defense" was a single article they published that basically said "Peeter Helme was already charged, why throw him out? He's already been punished! Anyway, the Writer's Union is shit anyway!" [11] Aforementioned Mart Helme has told LGBT people to move to Canada and Sweden at various points. Estonian band 5Horses made a fun song about it. [12] It's very important for me to demystify marriage here; I don't think assimilation is liberation and I think gay people should stay the fuck away from churches and build their own loving congregations. But we still deserve equal rights in a secular sense. [13] This is a lie. I am a queer supremacist.

Malaysian Food and Top Ten Must Eats
Tumblr media
Eating is a favourite pastime in Malaysia. I don't know if it was a Malaysian who coined the term 'live to eat', but other than visiting the mall, Malaysians eat, eat and eat. In fact, we eat at anytime of the day. Or night. Or even midnight. Yes, there are plenty of 24 hours restaurants called 'mamaks' that cater to our midnight hunger pangs. In fact, the stereotype of a Malaysian is that he eats not just during breakfast, lunch and dinner, but in between as well! This used to be such a problem in civil service that the government had to eliminate brunch time in order to increase productivity!
In fact, in Malaysia, very often people do not say, "How are you?". Instead, they say, "Sudah makan?", which means, "Have you eaten?"
It's not surprising that Malaysia is truly a paradise for food lovers. Being a multi cultural and multi racial society, not only do we have the best food from each culture, cultural integration produces even more types of foods.
Let me introduce to you the cuisines of the three main races in Malaysia- Malay, Chinese and Indian. If you have tried Chinese or Indian food before and think you've tasted it all, think again. Malaysian Chinese and Indian food have adapted to the local palate and have evolved into cuisines of their own. And like other cuisines, there are many regional variations, but here I will give you a general overview.
Malay
Cooking Style
Let's begin with Malay food. Malay cuisine uses many types of fresh aromatic herbs and roots such as lemongrass, ginger, garlic, shallots and chillies. Many of these herbs and roots are native to this region. Spices are also important and they are called 'rempah'. Another important ingredient is coconut milk, which is added to make a dish creamy and rich. There is also a key ingredient called 'belacan', which is a fermented paste made from tiny baby shrimps mixed with salt and chillies.
Typical Meal
You can find Malay food everywhere in Malaysia. A typical meal that you might order is a rice dish with dried anchovies, cucumber, peanuts and a hard boiled egg, together with the meat of your choice, called 'nasi lemak'. The rice is cooked in coconut milk. You might even order plain rice and usually accompanied by three side dishes of your choice, such as chicken, mutton, or beef and a variety of vegetables- all cooked in Malay style. Accompanying your dish, you could have beef soup which is called 'sup lembu'; or mutton soup which is called 'sup kambing' - two very popular Malay soups. To wash it down, you may order a refreshing cordial drink called 'air sirap'; or a cordial drink with condensed milk called 'ais bandung'.
Other Delicacies
Other Malay delicacies include fish mousse, grilled slowly over a fire, called 'otak-otak' and a noodle dish garnished with cucumber, onion, and lettuce served in savoury fish soup called 'laksa'. There are many regional variations of 'laksa', so try one in every state. There is also a Malay salad, which is called 'ulam'; consisting of a combination of fresh aromatic herbs; mint, basil, lemongrass, kaffir lime leaves, turmeric leaves, and raw vegetables like bean sprouts, long green beans, shallots, and cucumber. Instead of Thousand Island dressing, the topping is a combination of salted fish, dried prawns, fish crackers, fried grated coconut, and other savory garnishes.
If you're in Kelantan, which is the north-eastern state of the Peninsula, try this regional dish that serves blue rice with a variety of side dishes, It's called Nasi Kerabu. The blue colour is a result of the cooking process, where certain types of herbs are thrown into the water during the cooking of the rice
Dessert
For dessert, try a bread-like puff with sugar, corn, and coarsely chopped nuts in the middle called 'apam balik'.
Chinese
Cooking Style
Next, we move onto Chinese food. Chinese food is typically considered milder in spiciness, but Chinese cuisine in Malaysia has taken a spicier touch. Chinese cuisine is varied, but in Malaysia the style is generally the Cantonese style of cooking. A common way of cooking is stir fry. Cantonese cuisine balances the yin and the yang, of food, a difficult concept to describe. You may hear people refer to it as the cooling or "heaty" effects of food. For example vegetables, some fruits and soup are considered cooling and meat is considered heaty rice vs roti nutrition facts.
Typical Meal
A typical Chinese meal can be found easily in many restaurants and hawker stalls in Malaysia. You can also go to a 'kopitiam', which is a traditional Chinese cafe. You might order 'economy rice', which has rice and a variety of side dishes. A common practice is to choose three side dishes- one meat, one vegetable and the last, a dish like tofu or egg. You might also order a noodle dish. There are many styles of cooking noodles such as Cantonese or Hokkien style. You can try the fried noodle with eggs, cockles and bean sprouts called 'char kuey tiao', or Chinese noodles with dumplings and roast pork called 'wan tan mee'. You could also order thick noodles fried with black sauce and pork lard called 'hokkien mee'. Chicken rice is also very popular in Malaysia. To wash it down, you could order Chinese tea, or herbal tea.
Other Delicacies
Other delicacies include Chinese spring rolls stuffed with steamed vegetables, bean sprouts, turnip and carrot, called 'popiah'. Another popular dish here is the pork rib soup called 'bak kut the'. The soup is cooked for many hours with garlic, pork ribs and a variety of herbs. Chinese dumplings are also a must-try. They are glutinous rice wrapped in a leaf along with pork, mushrooms, nuts and salted duck egg yolk. if you have heard of 'dim sum' before, you must try the Malaysian version. It is basically an assortment of bite size dishes, including seafood, meat and vegetables. Dim sum is usually eaten in the morning.
Dessert
For dessert, a well-loved Chinese dessert is curdled soy bean milk topped with syrup called 'tao foo fah'.
Indian
Cooking Style
Indian cooking is of course, very spicy and hot. it has also adapted to the local culture to create a new type of cuisine. Most of the Indian food in Malaysia (comes from) from Southern India, but North Indian food is also widely available. Spices are the heart and soul of Indian cooking. Spices like coriander, cumin, turmeric, fennel, cardamom, clove, cinnamon and star anise are widely used.
Typical Meal
Indian food is easily available in Malaysia. For a typical meal, you might want to have rice served on a banana leaf, accompanied by a variety of spicy hot dishes such as mutton, chicken, fish, squid and crabs. Or you might order bread, and there are many types of them. To name a few, thin rice pancakes or 'thosai', fermented rice and dhal or 'vadai', wheat bread or 'chapati', flour bread or 'roti canai'. Or you may also be interested in chicken tandoori- that's chicken slowly grilled in a clay oven.
Other Delicacies
There are 24 hour restaurants open if you're suffering from a midnight hunger pang. Affectionately called 'mamak', they have been institutionalized as a Malaysian icon. Mamaks are run usually by Indian Muslims. If Westerners hang out at bars, Malaysians hang out mamaks. Mamak food is distinct, and a popular drink here is the 'the tarik', or tea with condensed milk. Other popular food you can order in a mamak is the 'maggie goreng', which is fried Maggi instant noodle with eggs, vegetables and meat.
Dessert
For dessert, you may be interested in a sweet dish of rice noodles topped with coconut and coconut palm sugar called 'putu mayam.'
Other Cuisines
There are many other types of cuisines in Malaysia, such as Nyonya cuisine, which is the cooking of the Straits Chinese. Straits Chinese trace their ancestors to Malays and Chinese, and their cooking combines the styles of these two races. I'd recommend a chicken stew cooked with salted soy beans and coconut palm sugar called 'ayam pongteh'; and a chicken dish cooked with nuts from a type of mangrove tree found in Malaysia, which is called 'ayam buah keluak'.
The Portuguese, one of the many colonialists who set foot in Malaysia, left their mark too on local cooking. One (example) is the Devil's Curry, a dish made from vinegar, herbs and nuts and plenty of chilli- hence its name Devil's Curry.
Top Ten Must Eats
Alright. It's now time for the top ten must try foods in Malaysia. As with all cuisines, it is very difficult to compile a list of only ten, especially in Malaysia where there are definitely more than ten foods you must try!
However, if I were to compile a list, it would look like this:
Number One.Nasi lemak. This is the national dish of Malaysia. Nasi lemak literally means 'rice in cream'. There are many regional variations, but the most common ones consist of steamed rice that is cooked with coconut milk and pandan leaves, which is a kind of plant indigenous to this region. Traditionally served on banana leaf, the rice is topped with cucumber slices, dried anchovies, roasted nuts and hard-boiled egg. But the most important ingredient is the 'sambal', a kind of hot spicy sauce made from chilli, pepper and spices. In fact, how delicious a nasi lemak is really depends on how well the 'sambal' is made! Most people will eat nasi lemak accompanied by a dish like chicken, cuttle fish, cockles, beef, or beef rendang which is beef cooked in dried spices, and vegetables.
Number Two. Bak Kut Teh. The name translates into 'meat bone tea'. This Chinese dish is a soup with pork ribs, herbs and garlic cooked for many hours. Other ingredients include mushrooms, internal organs, and dried tofu. Green onions and fried shallots are sometimes added in as well. Bak Kut Teh is served with rice and 'you tiao', which are long fried pieces of dough. Chopped garlic and chilli in soy sauce served in tiny plates often accompany this dish. Chinese tea is a very important part of this dish and is drunk to balance the taste. Try Bak Kut Teh for an authentic Chinese meal.
Number Three. Laksa. Yet another favourite Malaysian dish, laksa has many different regional variations. The more common one is the asam laksa. It is a sour fish- based soup where the main ingredients are shredded fish, usually mackerel, and finely sliced vegetables including cucumbers, onions, red chillis, pineapple, lettuce, mint, and ginger buds. Thick white noodles are then added into the soup. To top it off, a thick sweet shrimp paste is added. Other variations of laksa are Laksa Sarawak, Laksa Penang, Laksa Kedah, Laksa Ipoh, Laksa Kuala Kangsar, Laksa Kari, Laksa Johor, Laksa Kelantan, Laksam, Laksa Lemak and many more.
Number Four. Satay. You might have heard of this one before. It's basically skewered meat served with peanut sauce, cucumber, onions and rice cakes. The choice of meat is varied- you can choose deer meat, rabbit meat and even fish, but the most common are chicken and beef. The marinated meat is skewered on bamboo sticks and grilled over charcoal.
Number Five. Char Kway Teow. It literally means 'stir fried rice cake strips'. Flat rice noodles are fried together with chilli, prawns, cockles, eggs, bean sprouts and vegetables. Sometimes it is fried with pork lard. It also has many regional variations, but the most famous one is the Penang Char Kway Teow.
Number Six. Nasi Kandar. A popular north Malaysia meal that originated in Penang, nasi kandar is widely available. It has rice, and a variety of spicy side dishes to choose from. In fact, it is the spices that make nasi kandar so unique. The dishes are laid like a buffet and you have to point to the side dishes that you want. After you have chosen your side dishes, the waiter will pour a variety of curries onto your plate, and this process is called 'banjir' or 'to flood'. If you can't take spicy food, ask for less curry.
Number Seven. Roti Canai. One of the most (widely consumed foods) in Malaysia, roti canai is a type of flatbread that is available everywhere. It is round and flat, and is eaten with lentil curry called 'dhal'. You can ask for your roti canai to be made in many ways. The more popular variations are: with eggs or roti telur, with banana or roti pisang, made smaller but thicker or roti bom, made thin and flaky like tissue paper or roti tisu. You can even be more adventurous and ask for roti kaya, spread with Malaysian jam made from coconut; or roti Milo, with chocolate powder sprinkled on top. Try a few and find your favourite roti!
Number Eight. Cendol. An all time favourite Malaysian dessert, cendol consists of shaved ice, smooth green rice noodles in chilled coconut milk and coconut palm sugar, or gula Melaka. Sometimes, red beans, glutinous rice and corn are added. If you have a sweet tooth, ask for more gula Melaka, as many Malaysians do!

The Den Fantasy League Weekly Recap: Championship and Season Recap
Fellas,
We’ve finally made it to the end of the road and what a season it has been. Throughout the season we were treated to the expected and unexpected, let’s get to it.
Championship: Team Timshel v. Wilmore Cinderella
As the season went on, these were two teams we couldn’t really get a read on, yet we found them in the championship game. For JP, the week started off in the worst way. Jameis reverted back to his old ways with a 4 INT game and he also had bad games from Carson, Sutton, and OJ that didn’t help his fight. He was able to bounce back with big games from Lindsay, Thomas, and Washington but it just wasn’t enough to slow down Mike’s massive week. Mike, who pulled off the upset last week against Jane, pulled together some big weeks at the right time. Despite Dak’s disappointing 11 points, Mike was able to finalize his championship run with great play from Gurley (16.8), Melvin (16.7), AJ (14.3) NYJ D (13), and a massive game from Andrews (21.3). The hard part was that JP had guys on the bench that could have secured the win but it looks like the clock struck midnight on Cinderella and Mike’s season ends in triumph.
2019 Season Recaps
Champion: Team Timshel
Mike’s season was always right in the middle of the road. As he has been quick to point out, Mike has never had a losing season in our league’s brief history. Despite sitting in the middle of the road, he was able to surge at the right time. Mike was chastised for his first-round pick in Gurley, someone who exploded in the championship game. He then selected Melvin who also went off in the big game. Mike’s early success could be attributed to Dak’s excellent season start and then supplemented by Tannehill’s resurgence. Mike’s team peaked at the right time and he was a great GM throughout the season. Best Pick: AJ Brown, 16th Round Worst Pick: AJ Green, 3rd Round
Wilmore Cinderella
Speaking of a resurgence, last year’s Cabana Boy started off the season on a low note. He went from serving drinks in a “tux” to drafting a 2nd place team. JP’s team, who started off 2-5, was looking like his championship two years ago was a fluke. He was able to make his comeback and secure a spot in the playoffs. JP’s first-round pick was able to set league records and basically carry his team. He was able to overcome his second-round pick in James Conner and ship him off to Gabe’s team and flip him for Carson who helped carry him into the championship game. Unfortunately, he was banged up in JP’s final game. JP’s comeback was a good one but just not enough. Best Pick: Michael Thomas, 1st Round Worst Pick: James Conner, 2nd Round // Cam Newton, 8th Round
Debbie Rowe
Would it be mean to put the Reggie Miller choke gif in? Jake, who set himself apart as one of the top two teams in the league early on, was a force to be reckoned with all season long. Led by his #1 pick in CMC, Jake saw his MVP-like season lead the team in their pursuit of a championship. It’s truly difficult to find a soft-spot on Jake’s team but they just fell apart in the semi-finals when Saints D and Jack Doyle couldn’t get it done on MNF. The team I couldn’t see losing lost. You hate to see it. Best Pick: Christian McCaffrey, 1st Round /// Deshaun Watson, 7th Round Worst Pick: Tarik Cohen, 6th Round
Mixon It Up
Classic Rob, am I right? Rob was able to make it into the quarterfinals despite one of the biggest cold streaks in league history. Rob hit five straight weeks of not surpassing 70 points, luckily getting a win in one of those weeks. (More on that in a bit) It’s hard to establish the alpha on Rob’s team this year. Brady came in hot but mellowed out to the point that Rob had a QB controversy with Rodgers. He was able to find some hope in his acquisition of Mixon but was let down by his first-round pick in Alvin. Best Pick: Kerryon Johnson, 2nd Round Worst Pick: Alvin Kamara, 1st Round
El Commish
I, for one, had zero confidence in my team and I was just happy to be in the playoffs. I’ll admit, my team was up and down all season and I barely snuck in. What I didn’t doubt was that my team could put up points. I was one of the leaders in points for and that didn’t always help translate into the win column. I’m grateful for my guys like Kelce, Juuls, and Henry but just couldn’t find a consistent lineup outside of those guys. I’m down with Falcons forever. FOREVER. Best Pick: Derrick Henry, 3rd Round Worst Pick: Matt Ryan, 7th Round
Hank Mardukas
Another team I thought couldn’t lose, lost. Scott’s team seemed like a team of destiny. Scott finished the regular season with three losses and had the potential league MVP in Lamar Jackson on his team. Add in Dalvin and the rookie Jacobs, Scott’s backfield was one of, if not the, best in the league. Scott’s team was so good had this bench was impeccable. Unfortunately for him, his team ran out of gas in the first round of the playoffs with a big loss to the 2nd place team. Best Pick: Lamar Jackson, 11th Round Worst Pick: Derrius Guice, 5th Round
Kalabar’s Revenge
The warlock himself. G’s team came under some controversy early with his Kurses of Gabe aka Mr. Magorium. Despite his ups and downs, he was able to weasel his way into the playoffs. G started off hot in week one with a big connection in Mahomes and Watkins, something that never repeated itself. Mahomes’s injury hurt him in the long run and he just never really found a good rhythm with anyone else in his lineup despite a few trades. Can G finally overcome his own Kurse of never winning it all next season? Best Pick: George Kittle, 4th Round Worst Pick: Le’Veon Bell, 1st Round
Professor Remus Lupin
Speaking of Kurses, Gabe relinquished control of his squad to Professor Lupin to fight the dark arts. After starting out 0-3, he quickly rattled off five straight, only to lose his next three. Gabe was able to finish out the season on two wins to secure his playoff spot. The turnaround and the fight against the Kurses got Gabe into the playoffs. Gabe’s team couldn’t ever really find an identity and he himself came to qualms with the Browns’ coaching staff and how they handled Gabe’s star player. Best Pick: Nick Chubb, 2nd Round Worst Pick: Robert Woods, 4th Round
VP
Oh, Vinny. A team that the league had little belief in knew he was a second-half team. Vinny was able to rattle off some big wins down the stretch but unfortunately, his team came up just short against Rob that would’ve helped propel him into the playoffs. Vinny found himself just outside the playoff race. Vinny won our trade and survived the Brees's absence but was not able to secure his spot in the playoffs. Best Pick: Austin Hooper, 9th Round Worst Pick: Antonio Brown, 2nd Round
Stick With Us PVO
Dylan’s team in an enigma. A team that started off hot at 3-1 quickly fell apart finishing the season 2-7 totaling 5-8. Like Vinny, Dylan needed just another win to secure his victory but fell just short. Dylan’s season hit a rough patch when the #1 overall pick and his star RB Saquon had some ankle troubles. Dylan couldn’t figure it out and, despite PVOs, found himself outside the playoffs once again. Best Pick: Russell Wilson, 12th Round Worst Pick: Saquon Barkley, 1st Round (the right pick, just bad luck)
The Perfect Ten
E found himself in a fight to avoid the Cabana Boy spot. His playoff chances were diminished as the season went on and found himself fighting to stay out of the bottom of the barrel. The two-time champ’s squad could never put it together. Ekeler played well despite Melvin coming back, Tyreek got hurt early but performed when he recovered, and Kyler provided a somewhat consistent starter at QB. His disappointment was clearly OBJ. E won when it mattered most and avoided a plummet like one of his fellow champs. Best Pick: Mark Ingram II, 3rd Round Worst Pick: OBJ, 2nd Round
Cabana Boy: Minmaxers
Well, look who we have here. Good ole Al Nesta did everything he could to avoid being Cabana Boy. When teams started to clinch their safety, it looked like Al being Cabana Boy was a guarantee. However, he continued to fight until the very end. Despite starting off 1-7, he was able to win 3 out of 4 but lost in the final week when it mattered most. Al will now take on the role of CB for the 2020 season. Best Pick: Frank Gore, 16th Round Worst Pick: Brandin Cooks, 4th Round (Cooper was there)
Final Payout:
Champion: Team Timshel, $261 2nd Place: Wilmore Cinderella, $69 Regular Season Winner: Debbie Rowe, $30
Jake, pay these fellas.
It was an honor to play alongside you fellas for our fourth season. Cheers to this year and to many more.
Your Beloved Commissioner,
Jared R. Mosqueda

Fantasy Football Booms/Busts 2018: The Cleveland Browns
Tumblr media
After an extended hiatus from football, a matured Josh Gordon caught back on quickly in a handful of games last year. What are his fantasy expectations in 2018? (AP Photo/David Richard)
Tumblr media
As the mercury rises and we inch closer to the open of training camps, our resident fantasy football sickos, Brad Evans and Liz Loza, will profile their favorite booms/busts of every NFL team. Today’s topic: The Fantasy Factory of Happiness.
Cleveland, once a punchline in the fantasy community, boasts several highly employable starter-level options. Based on current ADP data, what dog will pack the most bite (return on investment) this season?
Brad – JOSH GORDON. Accumulated rust be damned. Gordon, off a year-plus disappearance from professional football, showcased his world-class skills from the onset late last year. In five games, he enticed 26.4 percent of the target share, averaged a ridiculous 2.09 yards per route, 17.5 average depth of target (WR2) and chipped in 11.5 fantasy points per game. Extrapolate his 18-335-1 line over 16 games and he would’ve finished at 58-1072-4, nearly the same number of total fantasy points in .5 PPR as T.Y. Hilton. Again, that’s not too shabby considering the forced vacation and his horrendous quarterback play. Keep in mind, he finished WR86 in catchable targets percentage. Deshone Kizer, who would miss the Lake Erie from five yards out, overthrew him routinely.
Yes, Jarvis Landry is a volume receiver which will likely reduce Gordon’s workload, but they’re two very different weapons. Landry along with Duke Johnson and David Njoku’s presence in the short field could lead to more premium downfield looks. And don’t for a second believe Corey Coleman, a rumored trade chip, is a major threat. Consider him a fantasy #BurnerAccount.
More importantly, Tyrod Taylor and Baker Mayfield are substantial upgrades at QB. Remember, Gordon tallied godlike numbers in 2013 with the likes of Jason Campbell, Brandon Weeden and Brian Hoyer under center.
Due to his superior talents, ideal size and prominent role, he’s a bargain at his 44.0 ADP (WR19). A WR1-level season in 12-team leagues is on the horizon.
Liz – TYROD TAYLOR. One year removed from top-ten production, Taylor is the Browns’ starting quarterback. And while the Baker Bandwagon is turnt, Jackson has been adamant about starting a vet under center. We may see Mayfield at some point in 2018 (more on that in a bit), but I firmly believe #TyGod will rise this fall, looking a lot like the 2017 version of Alex Smith.
Prior to last year, the two veteran QBs were very similar: mobile and reticent to sling the ball deep. Then Patrick Mahomes came to KC and pushed Smith, forcing his game to evolve. Tyrod now has a rookie nipping at his heels. And his career needs a resurrection, coming off of a frustrating season with the Bills.
In an offense that called the second fewest passing plays in the league, and with a rookie working as his No. 1 WR, Taylor still managed a true completion percentage of nearly 69 percent. He also completed over 38 percent of pressured throws (#12). Clearly, the 28-year-old is an efficient passer. He just needs weapons and opportunities. Luckily, he’ll get both in Cleveland.
But Taylor’s wheels are what really fuel his fantasy fire. A top-three rusher for three consecutive outings, the Virginia Tech alum has run for over 550 yards in two of his last three seasons and has scored at least 4 rushing TDs in every campaign since 2015. Operating behind an improved offensive line and with not one, but potentially three, studs in the backfield, there should be plenty of lanes to exploit. Which is also what value-minded fantasy fanatics will do when they nab a top-fifteen QB in the fourteenth round of twelve-team exercises.
Conversely, what Brown will fail to escape the pound this fall?
Liz – DUKE JOHNSON. Notice that when describing the Browns backfield above, I said “potentially” three studs. That’s because we’ve been waiting on Johnson’s “potential” since 2015. Sure, he’s got shimmy (top-five juke rate). Yes, he can catch (79.6% catch rate). But none of that matters if he isn’t used. The Browns told me exactly how they felt about Johnson when they added Jarvis Landry. Relegated to a change-of-pace role only, the former Hurricane is barely RB3 fodder.
Brad – CARLOS HYDE. Prior to Nick Chubb’s selection in Round 2 of the NFL Draft, I was firmly planted on the Hyde bandwagon. During a remarkably healthy 2017 campaign with the Niners, he finished RB11 in points per game and produced a strong showing in tackles avoided per attempt (RB13), total yards created (RB18) and number of breakaway runs (9, RB10). In the Browns’ boosted offense, he had all the makings of an RB2.
But Chubb’s arrival signals a dramatic value depreciation for Hyde. He, the rookie and Duke Johnson will enter into a strict platoon, where matchups will dictate employed formations and overall volume. Good luck attempting to decipher it on a week-to-week basis. At this time, it seems probable he tallies 45-50 percent of the opportunity share, which boils down to 220-240 total touches based on what Cleveland RBs mounted last year. And that could be a stretch.
In the end, it’s difficult stating the case for his services over Tarik Cohen, Lamar Miller or Royce Freeman at a similar cost (Hyde ADP: 62.3, RB28).
[Yahoo Fantasy Football leagues are open: Sign up now for free]
Cleveland’s investment in Baker Mayfield No. 1 overall in the NFL Draft pegs Tyrod Taylor a bridge quarterback. OVER or UNDER Week 7.5 the sassy rookie supplants Tyrod? (OVER = Week 8 or later; UNDER = Week 7 or earlier)
Brad – UNDER. Without question Tyrod finds himself in the fantasy friendliest situation of his career. No longer chucking passes to wideouts who would struggle in the Sun Belt Conference, he is flush with talent around him.
However, you don’t spend the No. 1 overall pick on a player expected to ride the pine the entire season. Baker Mania has the Dawg Pound hungry and optimistic, understandably so. Last year with Oklahoma, he routinely threaded needles, setting the pace in almost every adjusted accuracy percentage category according to Pro Football Focus. Deep, underneath, outside the numbers, over-the-middle … Mayfield displayed incredible deftness. Any signs of Tyrod crumbling at the controls and the rookie leapfrogs him on the depth chart.
Prediction: Baker blasts off Week 6 against the Chargers.
Liz – OVER. I’m clearly sold on Tyrod. The starting gig is his to lose, and I don’t believe that – save the possibility of injury – he’s going to let it slip away. It will take three consecutive stinkers for him to get pulled.
Think about it… One bad game and fans stroke their chin. Two bad games and they bite their nails. Three flops and the whole of Cuyahoga County starts pounding the table. Admittedly, the Browns schedule isn’t easy, but it opens against with four of the teams six games at home. I like those odds for Tyrod setting the tone and staving off Baker.

The New Ebola Outbreak Could Take 'Three, Maybe Four' Months to Control
https://healthandfitnessrecipes.com/?p=1634
The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently fighting its ninth Ebola outbreak—and Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum is as calm as ever. Warm, round-faced, and preternaturally chill, Muyembe was the first scientist to encounter Ebola during the first-ever outbreak in 1976, and he has been involved in studying and fighting the disease ever since.
“We have a long-standing experience,” he told me on Friday. “I think we will need three months to control [this new] outbreak. Maybe four.”
There are currently 32 suspected cases, dating back to April 4; of those cases, 18 have died. This suspected-case count has risen by 11 since the ministry of health first reported the outbreak on Tuesday, but it’s still unclear how many of them actually have Ebola. (For comparison, during a similar Ebola outbreak last year, the DRC reported 37 suspected cases, of whom only 8 were eventually lab-confirmed.) To date, only five blood samples have been sent to the national lab in Kinshasa for testing, and only two of them were confirmed to have Ebola. Neither of those confirmed cases have died.
Further samples are on the way, but as is often the case in the DRC, shipping is complicated by the lack of good roads and the remoteness of the affected region—a northwestern town called Bikoro and a nearby village called Ikoko-Impenge, 30 kilometers away.
Even in these early stages of the outbreak, confusion is brewing. On Thursday, Reuters reported that cases of hemorrhagic fever were reported in the outbreak area “as far back as December,” and the first deaths “were reported in January.” That’s true, insomuch as health authorities did examine a group of 15 suspected cases and 8 deaths in the same region in January and February. But their investigations weren’t conclusive. “There was no proof that it was Ebola,” said Tarik Jašarević, a World Health Organization spokesperson. It’s anyone’s guess when the outbreak actually began, although it seems likely that it was underway by April.
But there were problems in the flow of information. The investigators filed a report on March 1, but the ministry of health for the province didn’t channel that report onward, as they were meant to, according to Muyembe. It was May 8 when the national ministry of health notified the WHO of the two lab-confirmed cases. That delay is a blow for a country that prides itself on its ability to detect new cases of problematic diseases like Ebola. This time, the fringes of the surveillance web worked as intended, but the threads leading to the center had been severed. “It’s not usual,” Muyembe says. “We have to seriously discuss why the information was not used properly by the provincial level.”
Nonetheless, Congolese health workers, along with the World Health Organization and international partners, are already mobilizing to address the outbreak. They are working to find people who may be infected, track down everyone they had come into contact with, and isolate and treat patients. They are also distributing thousands of leaflets and posters to ensure that local communities practice safe burials. In Congolese funerals, families and friends will dress, clean, hug, caress, and kiss the bodies of the deceased—a loving ritual that tragically allows Ebola to spread.
Speaking at a press briefing in Geneva today, Peter Salama, the WHO deputy director-general for emergency preparedness and response, said that personal protective equipment (like gowns, masks, and gloves) have already been deployed to the ground, and “we should have a mobile lab up and running this weekend.”
The DRC ministry of health is also considering whether to deploy an experimental Ebola vaccine that has proven its effectiveness in clinical trials but has not yet been licensed. The WHO suspects a decision will be made over the weekend, and meanwhile, they are preparing for a green light. They are readying the freezers and other cold-storage units that will be needed to move and deploy the vaccine. Up to 40 people who were involved in testing the vaccine in Guinea are on standby. “This is a highly complicated, sophisticated operation in one of the most difficult terrains on Earth,” Salama said.
To date, the WHO has released $1 million of contingency funds to deal with the outbreak. Yesterday, the Wellcome Trust—a British nonprofit—pledged 2 million more pounds, while the U.K. Department for International Development added a further 1 million pounds.
As in the last outbreak, which took place in the Likati region in 2017, the virus is hitting a hard-to-reach area. “It’s 15 hours by motorbike from the closest town,” Salama said. The WHO is negotiating with the World Food Program to set up an air bridge—a sequence of air drops—between Kinshasa and Bikoro, so that supplies and aid can be more easily moved.
The region’s remote nature would “usually give us a sense of reassurance,” said Salama, but some aspects of the outbreak are worrying. The number of suspected cases is significant. Those cases have already been reported in three separate locations, which are at least 60 kilometers apart. Three health-care workers have been infected, and one has died; such professionals are especially susceptible to Ebola, which spreads through the bodily fluids of patients, and they can act as nexuses for more infections.
As Helen Branswell reported for Stat, Bikoro’s geographic location is also troubling. It sits on Lake Tumba, which connects to the mighty Congo River. The river then connects to Kinshasa, the DRC’s megacity capital with a population of about 11 million, and Brazzaville, the capital of the adjacent Republic of the Congo. There is a risk that travelers could carry the virus along the river to either major city. “If it’s a traffic line, there is a risk,” Jašarević told me. “The average incubation period is four to six days. You can get the virus and travel for a couple of days before you get symptomatic and become infectious.”
But Muyembe thinks the risk is low, “because the circulation on the river is not so high.” And in the worst-case scenario, the town of Mbandaka would likely act as the canary in the coal mine. It’s a large port town that lies on the Congo River, in the opposite direction to the two capitals, but far closer to Bikoro. If sick people were traveling on the river, they’d show up in Mbandaka first. And Muyembe says that Congolese health workers are already setting up there to monitor travelers and check temperatures.
“I think it’s a very different response from ever previously,” Salama added. “At all levels, this is being taken as the highest priority.”

The New Ebola Outbreak Could Take 'Three, Maybe Four' Months to Control
The Democratic Republic of Congo is currently fighting its ninth Ebola outbreak—and Jean-Jacques Muyembe Tamfum is as calm as ever. Warm, round-faced, and preternaturally chill, Muyembe was the first scientist to encounter Ebola during the first-ever outbreak in 1976, and he has been involved in studying and fighting the disease ever since.
“We have a long-standing experience,” he told me on Friday. “I think we will need three months to control [this new] outbreak. Maybe four.”

KLMBH #272 @ SETIA ALAM COMMUNITY FOREST – 1 OCTOBER 2017 - LONG RIDE SCRIBE REPORT
Tumblr media
SK Gew giving the briefing. I think he was saying that it was going to be tough…
Hares: The Panda Ghost Riders aka Bala (CS.Goh), Eric (CW.Yip), Ah Leng ( KL.Ang), Iyan Tan, Yew Seng (YS.Yip), Youngman (PL.Chiang), Ah Peow (KP.Ang), Ah Kiat (SK.Gew), Bryan Bong
This may be my last bash.  So, when they asked for a scribe volunteer, instead of hiding behind other people and looking the other way, I rashly put myself forward (being the last chance to make a contribution to the community and all that, sniffle..😢).  In fact, I was hoping that this was going to give me an excuse to stop at the checks, take a few photos and find a way to make fun of those checking (or, more likely, of the skivers like me who weren’t doing the checking).
So, I was a bit dismayed when at the briefing we were told that there would only be one check and this would be on the second half of the ride.  How was I ever going to get anywhere near the front-runners and record their exploits if we weren’t going to play the “concertina” and all congregate at the checks?  Given that I haven’t been riding so much recently I certainly wasn’t going to attempt to keep up with the FRBs (or whatever they are more politely called these days)!
That’s not to say that I didn’t try at the beginning, but…..woops, I’m getting a bit ahead of myself.  Back to the briefing.
It looked as if we weren’t going to have one.  There was already a certain amount of confusion about the meeting point for the bash, due to the number of parking alternatives around the couple of large blocks of shop lots (although none at the exact point indicated in the directions) and people parked in different places.  Meanwhile Lloyd was waiting forlornly in the far corner of the lots, hoping that someone would come with the tent and registration papers.
We all eventually grouped together near the registration point and the time for the briefing came…and went…but no sign of the hares!  10 or 15 minutes went by and eventually the lead hare, SK Gew, was found and he told us the key facts – at least I remember him saying that the ride was tough, and parts were tough, and it would be tough.  Maybe he also mentioned it would be very tough.  That was good, we were prepared, but I don’t remember him saying that “tough” meant “tough pushing the bike uphill”…
I had been told by a friend who claims to know the trails that the bash would start “with a hill” and so it would be best to get in front to avoid getting stuck in a single-track traffic jam.  So, I rudely overtook the riders in front of me to get to the front (let’s pretend for the moment that I would normally have started calmly at the back…).  We had a bit of road and then entered some wide track in what appeared to be degraded plantation land, nothing looking too difficult at this stage, apart from a bit of mud and puddles to avoid, then we hit “the” hill.
I thought that this would be a nice rideable hill, to separate the pack, but it soon steepened to the kind of grade that would destroy most people’s lungs and legs, just making the attempt to keep riding – plus a number of dodgy ruts to avoid.  I didn’t have too much of a guilty conscience about getting off the bike and starting to push, since those around me were doing the same, then I heard “rider!” being called behind me.
It was Pierre Savy, who not only passed me riding up the >20% slope, but kept on going, navigating around the ruts and clearing the whole slope and getting out of sight.  For some reason, he stopped down the hill on the other side, but soon after we started off close together we were faced by another hill.  I gave up at the beginning but Pierre rode up again.  I was shouting encouragement but – and I have to reveal my secrets to be an honest scribe – I was quietly pleased that he couldn’t make it the whole way up this hill, since then I didn’t feel quite so bad…
Tumblr media
Proof that Pierre didn’t ride up quite every hill….
We had cleared at least two big hills (I had pushed two hills) and we had ridden some flatter track, when things got a little…complicated.  We met riders coming the other way.  These weren’t just any riders, these were recognisable bash chaps, and so this was a little confusing.  Then was some discussion: How did you get there? How did you get there!?  Both groups said they came from the start, so I guess that someone had made a mistake, or the hares had deliberately created a maze.
Caesar Ang was one of those we met and he said “Well, I’m the only one who has got the track on my GPS”.  (What!!??  He had the track for the bash on his GPS??  That doesn’t much like cricket…)  In any case, if you know Caesar, you’ll realise that he raises his voice until everyone does what he says, so we all decided to follow him in the end.
To tell the truth, I’m still confused.  I’ve looked at the tracklog I recorded, and some of the sections of the trail I rode three times.  The hares had usefully put some arrow signs, as well as paper, but of course the arrows were placed to be visible if you were riding in the right direction to start with…  I still don’t know what happened but my suspicion is that one of the hares was hiding behind a bush in order to make the front runners do an un-announced circular trail, changing the paper after we went by – and this circular included two extra “tough” hills!
Tumblr media
I rode over this log at least 3 times!
In any case, we soon found some comforting arrow signs that pointed us In the right direction and then….the paper ran out.  I can say that the hares had been very generous with paper, particularly at the junctions, so when we had gone 100m without seeing paper (going down a steep hill which was going to be very “tough” to ride up, if we had to turn around), we did get a bit worried.  After that 100m, I gave up riding the bike and decided to check for paper on foot (to avoid pushing the bike up again).  Eventually I found paper and the on-trail, so I guess that someone had removed the paper that was now missing.  (We were told at the briefing that the walkers were complaining that too much paper had been laid, so maybe one of them reduced the quantity...)
From then on, the next section is a bit of a blur, but I remember more my feet being on the ground than on the pedals and getting a lot of pushing practice.  I was also starting to seriously overheat, even though we were under cover most of the time.  At one point, I thought that we were just reaching the highest point, so I got on the bike so that if anyone was looking it would appear that I was riding to the top.  I was then faced with a short but very steep ramp, that somehow I managed to ride up, to be rewarded with a sudden cramp in my leg to show I had overdone it, and then…more hills in front.
Tumblr media
Stand aside!  Tarik needs to push by!
In between the pushing, I do remember some downhills that I really enjoyed.  They weren’t fast but they were technical, trying to find the right line and avoid the several dangerous traps of the ruts in the trail.  However, I did spare a thought for the Short riders who also had to go along this trail and I imagined most would be walking downhill as well as up.
Eventually I got to what seemed as if it was the highest point (if the sign to Peak Gardens ahead meant that we could get there without going further uphill), so it was time to stop, take a rest and get out the phone for a couple of pictures.  I was happily photographing people pushing up the hill when I saw two riders: Mike Kwan and Chew.  They cleared it to the top of hill, the highest point on the ride.  (I didn’t interrupt them to ask if they had been on their pedals the whole way to that point…)
Tumblr media
Stand aside!  Chew needs to ride by!
Tumblr media
Mike Kwan gets to the top of the hill with a smile on his face…
There was a look-out point just ahead at Peak Gardens, and the hares had created a special poster on tarpaulin, with pens so that riders could sign – another great initiative from the Panda Ghost Riders!  From the number of signatures already there, I could tell that I was some way back in the pack, but I had my excuses since my job as scribe was to hang around a bit to record what was going on…
Tumblr media
The honour board at Peak Gardens.  I assure you there were less signatures when I got there…
Tumblr media
How did the hare, KP Ang (on the left) get there?  Ian Tan (on the right), I saw ride up…
Tumblr media
View from the hill to the housing below.
Struggling up all that hill had to be for a reason, and the answer was a very nice (and sometimes pretty steep) downhill ride.  It wasn’t particularly fast, but everything was rideable – if you had the b***s, or the lack of imagination, not to worry about all the opportunities to get stuck in a rut and go flying off into the bushes.  From my memory, the downhill was over in a flash, but I can see from my tracklog that it was about 1.5km.  Of course, downhill goes by a lot quicker than pushing up hill!
The hares did a great job of finding trail on a reduced patch of green land among a semi-desert of housing development areas.  Coming out of the trees near the bottom of the downhill trail, the contrast with the land around was stark.
Tumblr media
Near the bottom of the hill was the reminder of what is happening to the land around.
Coming out into the open, into “civilisation”, the hares had set up their umbrella and were offering 100-Plus (to the lucky first arrivers) and water.  I emptied the can of drink into my mouth, and the water onto my head!
Tumblr media
KL Ang with very welcome 100-Plus.
Tumblr media
Also a very welcome shower!
That, would you believe it, was the end of the ‘Short’ ride – it had taken me 2 hours to get there.  I could imagine there would be more than another 2 hours before the last of the short riders got to that point.  This will probably go down as the toughest Short ‘ride’ (push) in the recent annals of KLMBH…
The next section, continuing the Long loop, started with a short fun section, where the hares had managed to scrape a path to stay on the forest side of a fence – making for an interesting obstacle-course of a ride.  After an open low-lying dirt road, we took a left turn to ride up a gentle grassy track.  (The word “gentle” seems appropriate, after the kind of gruelling hills in the earlier section, but they were uphill all the same!)
At that point, I got my punishment for not having ridden enough recently.  I started to get some cramp (that I normally get after a ride, not during the ride), to the point that I was worried about continuing to pedal.  I got off, to push the bike on a tricky steep corner, and….OWWW!  I am not sure if my yell of pain could be heard in KL, but it should have been – this was one of those attacks of cramp pain that feel life-ending.  Fortunately, it was not life-ending or endless (or I wouldn’t be writing this now) and it subsided to the point that I decided to push (not ride) to carry on.  It did cross my mind to turn back, but I had promised to be scribe for the Long ride…
Of course, you can only push for so long when you have a bike, particularly if the trail is “flattish”, so I got back on – just trying to avoid any sudden muscle movements.  That seemed to work for me and eventually I could ride with that sensation of just keeping the cramp abay.
This had been quite a pleasant trail section, but then we reached the area of encroaching development.  The rule in Malaysia seems to be: if the ground is flat, flatten it some more, then start some housing development even if you don’t finish it; if there is a hill next to the flat area, call in the bulldozers and flatten it as well, since it must make the land more valuable even if no one wants to build there.
Tumblr media
The land is more valuable when all organic matter is gone…
Tumblr media
Somebody will want to live there one day…
That is the explanation for all the pushing on this bash.  Only land too steep to be bulldozed has been spared.
After riding through the man-made desert, we had to pass through completed housing areas and, after a section down a busy road, back into the island of green.  This added a few clicks to the distance, but they was necessary in order to enter the off-road area from the other side.  The entry track wasn’t quite rideable (at least to someone fighting off cramp) and then we came across a group of the hares – I guess that this meant that we were getting close to home…
I was still searching for a long twisty downhill that I had been told would be in this section of trail, but I guess I had misunderstood what to expect.  SK Gew told me the usual story (“a little bit of uphill, a little bit of downhill, not far to go”) and I set off on the heels of Ian Tan to ride the next section.
It was all starting to look a bit familiar (and yet I don’t know this area) and then I saw it: the same pair of tree trunks across the trail that I had already ridden past twice earlier in the morning (see the photo near the start of this story).  On the one hand, I was encouraged – because that did mean we were quite close to home.  On the other hand, I got very worried, because I had already gone round in circles once in this part of the forest and I didn’t want to do so again.
However, the very enterprising hares had this worked out.  They had turned around the arrow signs!  Now we could follow the arrows, even though they were pointing in the opposite direction to the way we had ridden earlier – at least, that is what we hoped…
With the extra wind that comes from knowing (or believing) that you are close to home, we raced around the puddles and took our best line to minimise the mud we were riding through.  I know those puddles now!  I also recognised where the trail crossed a ditch and presented an interesting “I’m going to keep pedalling” challenge…
Then we were back out onto the road, close to the starting shop lots.  The hares had marked a short cut, so the road route back was slightly different (that some of us didn’t notice, of course) and then we were home.
Tumblr media
KL Ang, saying that the first section is “60% pulling and 40% riding”.
So, what is the summary of all that?
This group of hares, the Panda Ghost Riders, proved that you can set a bash on a very limited amount of land.  They did a fantastic job to squeeze in a ride of over 20km, mostly in an area of less than 2km x 700m (I’ve measured it on a map).  The only terrain left to work with was close to vertical in parts, so that doesn’t make for soft rolling hills.  I, for one, felt quite happy with the excursion and I certainly got a lot of exercise!
The downside, of course, is that you have to be happy pushing your bike.  The hare KL Ang said that the first section was “60% pulling and 40% riding” (I push my bike, but apparently he has a pulling technique that might make it easier…)  There were one or two supermen who managed to ride up most of the hills, but the number who could do this was less than the fingers on my hand.   The rest of us got exercise in a different muscle group from the usual pedalling muscles.
That said, of those who got back in the first 4 hours, I did hear some remarks about the pushing, but I also saw a lot of smiles and good humour.  I guess that all mountain bikers have a masochistic streak somewhere – or at least suffering a bit makes us feel we have done something good!
The main problem was probably with the Short riders – who are perhaps less strong at pushing than the Long riders and perhaps less capable with the downhills.  The ride would not have been so much fun having to walk downhill as well as uphill.
The hares also added in some great features: the honour board for everyone to sign, the refreshment stop, very good paper laying (for those who keep their eyes open, ahem…) and also arrow signage.  It was managed well, in order to be able to send Long riders back in the opposite direction on the same trail.  I’m expecting that the next bash they lay will be really good, starting with a site that makes the job easier!

Day 8-Natives and a Surprise Festival
Today was our last full day in Kuching and we started it by going to a cultural center that had houses from many of the different Sarawak tribes represented. Most of the tribes had different longhouses and only one tribe was nomadic and instead built huts. There were subtle differences between the longhouses, some taller others would last longer others were longer etc, but all of them were built on stilts and the entire village would live in one longhouse. This is very different from the longhouses that Native American tribes would build because they wouldn’t have stilts and would usually only contain one family. It was interesting to see how people built their homes out of what was around them. We also got to see examples of the different cultural dances. The example Iban longhouse made me excited to see the actual one that we are going to be staying in very soon.
We returned to the city for lunch and visited the open air market for food. I had a very yummy wanton mee, which is wanton soup with noodles. We made our way back to the hotel and then left for the boat ride on the river. We rode in a traditional Sarawak boat and even got the chance to row the boat for a little bit. It’s not as easy as it looks. The oars are difficult to raise out of the water and to keep them even to make sure you go straight. We eventually made our way to the other side of the Sarawak river and got the chance to visit the Malay side of the city.
The Malay side of the city is isolated from the rest of the city because the government has set aside most of the land on that side for the Malay families because they have lived there for generations. Most Malay are Muslim and to own land on that side of the city you have to be Muslim. The village area was smaller and even less people spoke English on that side of the city. Cheyenne, Chloe and I decided to visit a food court on the Malay side for dinner.
To my delight I’ve started to pick up on some of the Malay words, at least the words for common foods. We’ve been ordering enough food and seen the signs enough that we’ve figured out that mee means noodles, and nasir means rice etc. It made it a little bit easier to order when the cook doesn’t understand English. I ordered tom yum soup and teh tarik. When we sat down in the food court we were initially approached by a little boy who ran up and waved at us and said hi. We waved back and said hi back and it became a game. All the little kids were running past us saying hello and waving. Then it turned into hello and high fives. They were all so cute and loved seeing videos of themselves. They entertained us while we ate and then eventually their older siblings told them they had to leave. We used the river taxi to get back across the street and ran into an interesting sight.
We were greeted by Chinese dragons when we were attempting to cross the street and get to our hotel. We couldn’t figure out what was going on at first and then figured out that it was some sort of parade. People started handing out candy and then we thought that it was a Chinese festival at first. We enjoyed seeing the dragons go by and the people moving them got as close as possible to us, as we were standing in the middle of the road. People were going by with gongs, drums, and throwing rice in front of statues of rocking deities. There were so many people walking with the deities and we couldn’t figure out where they were going or why. One group was throwing out Chinese paper money and they said that it was good luck for wealth when I caught two. A group walking through with red shirts asked us where we where from, told us that they represented the People’s Action Party and then invited us to walk with them. By this time, we had figured out that the parade wasn’t a super organized thing and that people were joining and leaving at random.
We watched for a little while longer and got asked to join the parade again, I think they were amused at the sight of three blonde tourists standing in the middle of the road watching. We eventually decided that we wanted to find someone who spoke English well enough to explain the parade to us. We caught up to a larger group with a different deity statue and eventually found someone who spoke decent English. She explained that the parade was because it was a Chinese deity's birthday and they were throwing a party and visiting all the Chinese temples before returning him to his temple. We also learned that the deity was rocking so that it wouldn’t get mad that it was getting carried. We followed for a little bit longer and when we reached the next temple someone light fireworks in the middle of the street. It was so loud and bright. The entire procession stopped until the fireworks were gone and then proceeded to the next temple. We didn’t follow all the way to the last temple because they had visited three temples by the time that we stopped following them.
One of the things that really surprised me about the parade was how many people turned out to join the procession. It was a huge crowd and they kept asking people to join them. They didn’t seem upset that tourists were interested in their traditions and rituals. It seemed more of a cultural ritual than a religious one. I’m glad that we got to see it even though after we stopped following them and stopped at a coffee shop for wifi we could still hear the fireworks going off.
****Probably won’t have WiFi for the next three days so I will update after the longhouse***

Bears showed far more life in preseason
Encouraging debut Thursday amplified the buzz about what is ahead for the Bears after their 24-17 exhibition loss to the Broncos. But there’s more to it. Behind outsiders’ frenzied examination in their quarterback situation is a remaining-place crew seeking to gain a foothold in all 3 phases of the sport.
And, howdy, as a minimum the Bears confirmed some life. That’s more than they could say 12 months ago after their 22-0 preseason-beginning loss to the Broncos.
“All in all, it became a good Week 1 performance,” train John Fox stated.
Fox cited his crew’s 173 rushing yards and the protection’s stinginess till the fourth area. And right now after the sport, it regarded the Bears had averted any severe accidents to key players.
They go back to Bourbonnais on Saturday for 3 practices at Olivet Nazarene before breaking camp and moving to Lake Forest to settle into more of an ordinary-season routine. Here’s our 3-section evaluation of Thursday’s recreation with a few exams to understand of as they get lower back to paintings.2016 nfl preseason schedule release date
Offense
A reason for optimism: Rookie Mitch Trubisky absolutely showcased his athleticism and throwing accuracy over 44 snaps. He got into a great rhythm within the hurry-up offense at the quiet of each half and manifestly changed into cozy seeing the field out of the shotgun. Suddenly, there is in-recreation evidence helping pleasure about his future.
The look for positives amongst players better up the depth chart ends in the running lower back opposition. Fourth-round rookie Tarik Cohen confirmed burst in turning the nook on several runs. The five-foot-6, 181-pound speedster also held up OK towards stay tackling, gaining nine and 3 yards after contact on separate first-half of contains. Veterans Ka’Deem Carey and Benny Cunningham each had a great feel for finding lanes once they were available. That opposition got greater interesting, especially with veteran Jeremy Langford (right ankle) desiring to trap up.
The reason for the challenge: The overhauled first-string passing attack broke down in all 3 regions:
quarterback, safety, and receivers. It’s vital to do not forget the one’s factors are interdependent. On the interception again for a touchdown, Mike Glennon (2-for-8, 20 yards) in all likelihood ought to have thrown under to Kendall Wright, who had two steps on his defender and room to run after the seize, rather than throwing lengthy into coverage even as being forced.
But Glennon wishes his receivers to assist him, and this is where the Bears’ method genuinely should cross sideways. The Broncos defense led the NFL closing season in yards per skip, and their sticky protective backs are a large cause why. Even their 2nd stringers blanketed Cameron Meredith and Kevin White efficiently. The Bears need those two to play quicker, and they need Markus Wheaton (appendectomy) returned to stretch the field deep.
Worth discussing: Trubisky handed six instances after losing back from below center. Five of that concerned play-movement and five concerned rollouts. In different words, coaches recognize he’s greater comfy within the shotgun so that they eased him into losing returned with the aid of transferring the pocket and having the sphere, which simplified his reads. Clearly, that allowed Trubisky to play freely and helped spark some self-assurance. As the preseason continues, it’ll be exciting to see whether or not coaches have him drop returned from beneath middle greater frequently without play-movement or rolling out. Going thru progressions and analyzing defenses from below center are regions wherein Trubisky admittedly needs experience.
Defense
The reason for optimism: Just study the scoreboard. The protection surrendered three factors thru the first 3 quarters. That’s an encouraging indicator of the skills, intensity, and training on that side of the ball, irrespective of the Broncos’ unsettled quarterback scenario. The first two units tackled properly enough and, of greater importance, a few young potentialities flashed. Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd sacked Trevor Siemian on the first snap. He received a hand combat against proper tackle Menelik Watson, then speedy turned the nook and pulled into the quarterback. Second-yr shielding ceases Jonathan Bullard penetrated the backfield to prevent a 3rd-and-1 convey. Rookie protection Eddie Jackson contested a skip downfield and made an address towards the run.
The reason for the problem: Six consequences within the first half signified a loss of discipline. Even extra troubling was that the Bears devoted four infractions on four consecutive snaps all through the field-goal drive they surrendered within the first area. Defensive cease Mitch Unrein jumped into the neutral quarter. Cornerback Bryce Callahan changed into flagged for pass interference, despite the fact that the call turned into questionable. Then Willie Young and Sam Acho devoted returned-to-again private fouls. Later inside the 1/2, Eddie Goldman smacked Broncos center Dillon Day’s head with an open hand after Day taunted him.
Worth discussing: This season’s emphasis on takeaways? Nothing to expose for it after one recreation. The Bears did not come away with any turnovers, whilst the Broncos controlled two takeaways via the primary three drives.
“Life is the sum of all your choices.” – Albert Camus
You know, we can have the most enlightened beliefs about life and how life works but they can remain pretty much theoretical until we have an opportunity to practice our beliefs. [YAY Contrast?]
For example, I have for many years been aware of the power of choice. I have reminded myself on a daily basis that I get to choose. I have frequently tried to convince clients that they too get to choose. Perhaps this blog post will remind you of the awesome power of choice you possess.
Why is that important? Because we create our own reality through the choices we make.
So, the day before Thanksgiving 2015 I had an opportunity to take this understanding to a deeper level. My elderly mother had an accident at home and ended up spending a week in the hospital followed by six weeks in a rehab facility. I am her primary caretaker when she needs care and this situation was very difficult for me. For one thing, it broke my heart to see my sweet mother suffering and incapacitated. Second, I was called on to make her my priority and completely shift my schedule to tend to her needs. I’m in no way complaining
