When Nightmare turned 18, he had expected to switch into Dream's body. He hoped for it, actually. There was no way Dream couldn't be his soulmate, because Nightmare couldn't imagine life with someone else.

But it didn't happen.

Dream, when Nightmare asked, hadn't switched either.

If they didn't switch, they didn't have soulmates. That was how it went. At first, Nightmare had thought, "Fuck it. Who needs soulmates?"

But Dream didn't seem to think the same.

Nightmare ended up on the run, and through the years, he stayed in his own body, stayed himself. When he heard the news, sometime in his 80s, or somewhere around that range, that Lord Dream had found his soulmate, some person named Ani, Nightmare spent the day alone. Of course, it hadn't been a public announcement, but waking up in someone else's body when you were that important didn't go unnoticed.

But still, Nightmare regained hope. Maybe his soulmate existed, they just hadn't been born yet. Maybe.

But the years went by, and Nightmare began to lose hope again. The universe had played some cruel joke on him, but Nightmare didn't care anymore. He had Error and Cross, he didn't need a soulmate. Even then, it was hard to see Error and Cross being affectionate with each other, even walking around in each other's bodies on switch days.

It was after one particularly bad night, where Nightmare felt completely empty inside and had fitfully fallen asleep, that for the first time in his life, he woke up in someone else's body.

Nightmare blinked awake, staring up at the ceiling. He squinted. That wasn't his ceiling.

He looked over to the bedside table, where a golden circlet and a phone rested. That wasn't his bedside table. Hope flooded him and he sat up, throwing back the blanket that wasn't his either. He grabbed the phone and turned it on.

The lock screen was of three people he knew, but... it was like looking in a distorted mirror. It was Dream, Ink, and a swap Sans, but they looked different. Ink was more colorful, and Dream wore something like what he usually did. Vaguely.

He opened the camera app, and a face that wasn't his own stared back at him. It was the face of the weirdly dressed Dream he'd just seen on the phone's lockscreen, but with his own purple eyelights.

"Oi, Dream, you never wake up this late, are you okay?" A voice called through the door, and Nightmare resisted the urge to shriek. That was most definitely Ink's voice, but it too sounded different. A little higher. More reedy. More annoying.

"Yeah, I- Uh," he stammered, looking down at himself. The voice that came out of his mouth was so familiar, and yet, different too. Raspier. Just a bit higher than his own voice, actually.

And this Dream apparently wore the same kind of stupid pajamas his Dream did. He rolled his eyes. Some things remained constant though even alternate multiverses. That was where he had to be, of course. It was like looking in a... a swapped mirror.

"Dream? Dude, are you sick?"

Nightmare flinched at Ink's voice. He stood and went to the door, still holding the phone that didn't belong to him in his hand.

The Ink from the phone's lockscreen stood outside the room that didn't belong to him. He took one look at Nightmare and snorted.

"Soulmate switch finally happened for him, huh?" Ink grinned, amused. "S'up. I'm Ink, you're in my buddy-"

"Dream's body, right?" Nightmare cut him off flatly, squinting at Ink. It was strange to see Ink so... smile-y. "I don't think I'm in, uh... my multiverse."

Ink blinked.

"Pfft, an alternate multiverse?" The artist snickered, though he looked uneasy. "That's fuckin' hilarious. What makes you think that?"

"My name's Nightmare."

The shock finally hit him, and he leaned against the doorframe, sinking to the ground. Ink merely looked at him as he had a crisis.

He had a soulmate. He had a soulmate.

But he could never reach them, not in person.

The universe liked to play cruel tricks.
