Isozyme, your hrpf is so tight and snippy, you pace it all so well. Yoy have the plot so well tied to each scene. My question for you is, how do you do it,? Is it a matter of planning the end to end story before starting to writing? Thank you for your ficts!
Thank you!! This is a good question and very gratifying because one of the things I aim for with my fics is to always be compulsively readable no matter where in the story you’re at.
I don’t actually know the story from end-to-end at a high level of detail when I start out. Usually I know about how long the story will take to tell, the setup, and then the next couple things after that. As I write I sort of build the track ahead of me, so I’ll often have a detailed outline for the next scene, a couple bullet points for a handful of scenes after that, and then a sort of general vibe for anything farther away. (With a few exceptions, like I knew Matthew was going to get a supportive phone call from Sid in LMLAY for ages and ages before I finally got to write it.)
Basically my pacing philosophy is that every scene should have a job to do, and ideally also have some side hustles, and I sort of build it up layer by layer as I come up with each upcoming scene.
Let’s spitball a scene as an example. Hypothetically let’s give me a mcmattdrai wip where they’re all training with Scary Gary and in the scene in question Matthew is trying to figure out if Leon is sleeping with Connor. Maybe they’re waiting for the elevator together after a workout, that’s a good setting for two people who sort of know each other to have a stilted conversation. Matthew can joke that his legs are too tired to take the stairs and Leon can complain that he doesn’t know where the stairs are yet (this establishes their different levels of comfort in the setting in addition to giving some character notes). Leon probably also looks hot and sweaty, Matthew can notice that several times during the scene to amp up the sexual tension while he asks Leon awkward questions. A nice thing about elevators is that they have a timer, so I get to control when the elevator arrives and cuts off their conversation; probably right around when Leon reveals that he’s not sleeping with Connor (one mystery tied up, that’s the big job done by the scene) but now Matthew wants to know why Leon’s not sleeping with Connor (another mystery opened). They could keep talking about that inside the elevator but I don’t like that because I think that mystery should stretch out into the next couple of scenes, so to fix that (and add comedy) just as the elevator door is starting to close Connor can obliviously run up and join them. Now Matthew can’t ask Leon any more questions about Connor but he can observe the two of them together and start making some theories. However now that I have Connor in the scene, I should give him something to do from his plotline as well. Maybe I can make him talk about his struggles with a fundraiser for sick kids he’s trying to organize. Naturally Matthew volunteers Leon to help, which leads to Leon volunteering Matthew to also help as revenge, and that leads me neatly into the next scene (3 idiots struggling at event planning together in between their workouts).
I don’t know anything else about this fake story or where it’s going, but the scene is still dense and feels connected to a plot because all the elements are doing some kind of work on behalf of the story. And that’s pretty much how I do it when I’m actually writing something with a lot of plot — come up with what the main goal of a scene is, and then while achieving that goal try to have the stuff happening in the background work to move along side plots and set up the next thing.
Pacing is like a tricky little puzzle and it’s hard but I think it’s worth it when the work pays off; very glad you’re enjoying my hockey fics!

Game Results!!
Right before the playoffs started, I made a Google form asking people to guess the results. To my surprise, I got over a hundred responses! Here they are, summarized. Congratulations to the winners:
@firstliner with 17 points and 12 correct answers
@kaprizovv with 17 points and 10 correct answers
@zukirillo with 16 points
Here's a graph of point distribution:
Tumblr media
Let's get to the nitty gritty:
Let’s start with the individual question results.
Tumblr media
Hopefully the way I phrased each question in this chart makes sense. Let’s talk about some of the things that surprised me! First, I want to note that a lot of these questions -- most of the ones where I asked you to guess a number -- also gave points for being very close. In the chart above, I only put in the actual correct answers; for example, those who picked 50 games exactly to be played in round one.
A surprising amount of you -- nearly a fifth -- picked Florida to beat Boston in the first round. Definitely not what I would have thought! But then again, they actually did end up doing it, so that all in all is a bit wild. An equally surprising amount of you picked Toronto to break the Curse. Or at least, that one specific curse. I admire the optimism! Florida ruins everyone’s plans again, though.
Not very many people guessed the number of saves made very closely. The 63-save performance was, in fact, Bobrovsky against Carolina in that absolute marathon game one of the Eastern Conference final. Most people seriously underestimated the number of saves you can make in a playoff game -- I guess sometimes we forget playoff overtime format, which can jack up numbers to stuff you wouldn’t usually see in the regular season (the second-place this playoffs is a tie between another Bobrovsky performance in the game that eliminated Toronto, and an Oettinger one against Minnesota, both of which went to overtime). Although it is worth pointing out Juuse Saros made sixty-four saves in a game and won earlier this year… also against Carolina, the most shot-happy offence in the league.
And I’m also surprised that only one person guessed Vegas would win the Cup! In fact, literally nobody guessed Florida either, so safe to say this Cup Final was a bit of an upset.
As for the answers that were given, here’s a quick list of observations:
For the DAL-MIN question (pick a player on each team. If either of them scores the most goals in the series, you get points), Robertson/Kaprizov was by far the most chosen answer. Sixty-three of you picked it -- that’s more than half!
Much like Robertson/Kaprizov was the overwhelming answer only to be wrong, most people picked the New Jersey Devils to be the newcomer that lasted the longest. (I picked “longest lasting” based on “most wins,” and since Seattle lasted to seven in round two while New Jersey was out in five, Seattle made it further.)
90 people picked Vegas to beat Winnipeg in the first section of the game, while 84 people picked Vegas to beat Winnipeg in the second section of the game.
Like the chart above says, the closest guess to the longest game question was within 9 seconds (it was 3OT+19:56).
Boston was the most popular Cup choice, with 29 votes. After that were Colorado and Edmonton with 16 and 15 respectively, then the Leafs with 12 and the Stars with 10.
I’m doing a whole separate section for the player choices at the very end, because that’s a bit more involved. There were three questions: which player would lead the playoffs in scoring by the end of the Conference Finals, which goalie would have the best sv% by the end of the Conference Finals, and which player would win the Conn Smythe (I gave you guys three chances for this one.)
The leading scorer was Hintz, with 24 points. Only one person actually chose Hintz -- which, he definitely wouldn’t be my first choice either! I mean, I love that little blonde freak, but who would have known he’d have put on a Smythe-worthy performance (with the noted caveat of, you know, not actually doing the thing)? But who was chosen?
Nine players got one vote: Matty Beniers (SEA), Roope Hintz (DAL), Kirill Kaprizov (MIN), Mitch Marner (TOR), Jared McCann (SEA), Martin Necas (CAR), Brock Nelson (NYI), Devin Shore (EDM), and Matthew Tkachuk (FLA.) I can only assume Devin Shore was a joke.
Auston Matthews got two votes.
Jack Hughes got four votes.
Jason Robertson got five votes.
Leon Draisaitl got six votes.
Mikko Rantanen got seven votes.
Nathan MacKinnon got eight votes.
David Pastrnak got twenty-five votes.
And, of course, Connor McDavid got the most, with thirty-eight votes.
Nobody guessed Jack Campbell was going to have the best save percentage -- of course, he mostly got sheltered minutes, when the game was already lost and neither team was really pushing. Here’s who did get voted for:
Martin Jones (SEA) got one vote.
Stuart Skinner, Andrei Vasilevskiy, and Connor Hellebuyck got two votes each.
Freddie Andersen, Marc-Andre Fleury, Jeremy Swayman, and Vitek Vanecek got three votes each.
Igor Shesterkin got four votes.
Filip Gustavsson and Ilya Samsonov got five votes each.
Alexandar Georgiev got six votes.
Ilya Sorokin got eleven votes.
Jake Oettinger got twenty-two votes.
Linus Ullmark finished up his Vezina-calibre season by winning the dubious honour of Most Votes In This Tumblr Poll, with thirty-three. A surprisingly similar margin to Connor McDavid.
Okay, now the Smythe. I asked everyone to submit three choices for this question, so there are a lot more results for this one!
Twenty-three players each got one vote: Connor Clifton and Hampus Lindholm (BOS), Brent Burns (CAR), Erik Johnson, Alexandar Georgiev, and Valeri Nichushkin (COL), Joe Pavelski and Tyler Seguin (DAL), Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (EDM), Sasha Barkov (FLA), Anze Kopitar (LAK), Filip Gustavsson (MIN), Nico Hischier and Luke Hughes (NJD), Casey Cizikas and Anders Lee (NYI), Adam Fox (NYR), Andrei Vasilevskiy (TBL), Justin Holl (?), Calle Jarnkrok, Ilya Samsonov, and Willy Nylander (TOR). That’s a lot!
Ten players each got two votes: Jeremy Swayman (BOS), Martin Necas (CAR), Matt Boldy and Marc-Andre Fleury (MIN), Brock Nelson and Ilya Sorokin (NYI), Igor Shesterkin (NYR), Matty Beniers and Vince Dunn (SEA), and Connor Hellebuyck (WPG).
Two players each got three votes: Brad Marchand and Mika Zibanejad.
Two players each got four votes: Miro Heiskanen and Auston Matthews.
Sebastian Aho got five votes. Not sure which one, though.
Cale Makar got six votes.
Kirill Kaprizov got eight votes.
Matthew Tkachuk got nine votes.
Jake Oettinger got ten votes.
Jason Robertson got eleven votes. Yes, it is weird how they keep getting one more vote than the last.
Leon Draisaitl got twelve votes.
Jack Hughes got fourteen votes. Whenever someone put “Hughes” without specifying the brother, I assumed they put Jack, considering that he’s more well-known than Luke and Quinn isn’t in the playoffs.
Patrice Bergeron got fifteen votes.
Mitch Marner got sixteen votes.
Mikko Rantanen got seventeen votes.
Linus Ullmark got twenty-three votes.
Nathan MacKinnon got thirty votes.
David Pastrnak got forty votes.
Connor McDavid got forty-three votes. First in our hearts <3
Anyway! Hope you enjoyed that, and congratulations to the winners! If you have feedback, questions, or want your specific results, please send in an ask :) Let’s hope for a nice and peaceful offseason.

do you ever compare your work to other writers or experience impostor syndrome/low confidence about your work? you obviously weren’t born the incredible author you are today (unless you were, lol) bc it’s sometimes hard to know everyone is on their own writing journey, what has yours been like in terms of ability? especially when there are amazing authors like you out there who seem to do it effortlessly!
oh jeez, this is such a sweet ask! and i am so slow at answering sorry!
so i've been writing for maybe 15 years now. i started out writing original science fiction/fantasy short stories and trying to sell them to magazines. back then i remember writing a lot of stories that i knew were broken somehow, and trying very hard to figure out why and fix them. writing would feel like trying to hold onto a dozen eels at once and half of them would always be squiggling away and refusing to fit in properly when i tried to put them back in place. there's just so much to think about when you're putting together a story, and as a new writer none of it was automatic. but i kept writing and getting feedback and critiquing other people's stories and reading writing advice and trying different stuff and so on, and the more years i spend hacking away at it, the more things become automatic and intuitive. these days i don't write much original fiction to sell, but i still lean on all that practice from my short story submission grind days when i'm typing away on my little gay porns
i think we all compare our work to other writers sometimes and weep and rend our garments because we'll never be them. but i have a secret trick: comparing my work to writers who are wildly popular and going "well fuck that's terrible. that's just absolute dogshit garbage. ten thousand people have no taste." this balance between trying to learn from my friends who are awesome writers and being a vile little hater (in private only!) has kept me sane and i suggest it to everyone. always good to remind yourself that quality doesn't guarantee popularity and popularity doesn't guarantee quality, you know?

hi! what are, in your opinion, must-read go fics?
OMG this is the worst thing to ask me, i love to yap about good omens fics like i'm teaching a literature class. i'm so thrilled to have this opportunity, here is my good omens required reading list:
Lie Back and Think of Dinner by jessthereckless (M, 11k) - THE looney tunes sex fic. every time they're intimate, natural disasters happen. it's part of a series, but but this first fic is REQUIRED!! love it, i'll never think of golden syrup the same way ;-) An Angelic Disposition by iamtheenemy (E, 3k) - established relationship, aziraphale uses every tool in his disposal to give crowley what he wants (despite crowley so dedicated to service topping), and it overwhelms him. MUST READ!! you’re not a religious person (but) by isozyme (M, 20k) - very true to the spirit of the show and their eternal refusal to communicate while desperately wanting more. this is THE BEST fic re: divine ecstasy being synonymous to sex for them, which is a killer combination!! roots by darcylindbergh (M, ~10k) - lovely established relationship/south downs fic. it's revealed that aziraphale has always dyed his hair blonde, and the thing that makes this fic VITAL is the acknowledgement that they deliberately choose their presentation and the way the world sees them. more parts of the fandom need to understand this somewhere, a place for us by aglaophonos (T, ~2k) - i'm biased because i love char and her work, but seriously. read this. if you're ever wondering why me and her are constantly talking about 1941 s3, this 1941 continuation fic she wrote encapsulates every reason WHY Lead me to the banquet hall by obstinatrix, wishwellingtons (E, 15k) - i mean. i mean. it's The Cheesecake Fic. why is crowley content to watch aziraphale eat, and how does he cope with that same hunger when aziraphale ISN'T there? you simply have to read this if you haven't, and reread it if you have affection and other cravings by JustStandingHere (E, 30k) - this is THE post s2 fic you need to read. through its historical flashbacks and precarious re-introduction of aziraphale and crowley's relationship following their fight, all through the lens of food... honestly that's what it's all about!
these are what i would consider to be required reading, as in - you will come away from these fics with a better understanding of the canon, which (in my opinion) is what elevates a fic from the rest. but if you'd like to check out the other fics i adore, my bookmarks are where i save every fic i enjoy reading, and it's about 99% good omens so you can always visit that if you're looking for something to read that'll be true to the spirit of the show!!

hi!! thank you for asking me this!
because — do i have stevetony fic recs?... OH DO I?!?
i had to really hold back A LOT because i have hundreds of recommendations in my bookmarks, but here are some of my favourites. this post would be insanely long if i included tags, warnings, or summaries, so i hope the categories help a bit but make sure to only read what you're comfortable with as there are plenty of angsty and smutty fics :)
thank you to all of the authors for your wonderful work; you're so appreciated!

stevetony but the genre is "friends have sex like this, right?"
Picture This by @stovetuna
“What if—” Steve doesn’t clear his throat this time. He swallows. And oh, Tony watches like it’s happening in slow motion, the tensing of tendons, the roll of Steve’s Adam's apple, the way his suprasternal notch collapses and fills as his esophagus works to, what, keep words down? Saliva? A moan? Steve blinks and the glassiness clears. The blush all but vanishes. “Never mind,” he mutters.
And that…that just won’t do.
Tony leans forward ever so slightly over the foot of the bed, further into Steve’s space by a fraction of an inch. Anyone else wouldn’t have noticed, but Steve does. He stares at Tony from up near the headboard, a plaintive expression deep behind his eyes, a problem that Tony can’t help but want to fix.
“Would you like my help, Steve?”
***
Steve gets caught attempting to take his first-ever dick pics. It's a struggle, he explains, because it brings up a whole host of lingering body image issues. Tony, very gallantly and not at all because he is in love with Steve, offers to take the photos for him.
dick drunk by @stovetuna
“I’m going to fuck you stupid,” Steve says, pulling away only a fraction of an inch to say it, a promise as deep and certain as the look in his eyes, “and you’re going to take it. Aren’t you, Tony.”
Tony wants a drink. Steve gives him something else.
Thrust Issues by @sineala
A battle gone wrong leads Tony to the unexpected and pleasant discovery that Steve is much more well-endowed than he could ever have imagined. But when Tony learns that Steve has never actually been able to sleep with anyone because of his size, Tony does what any good friend would do: he offers to relieve Steve of his virginity. Personally. Tony's determined, Tony's methodical, and Tony has a plan. He's going to get Steve laid. Tony just needs to make sure Steve never finds out that Tony's in love with him.
The Least Difficult of Men by @isozyme
It isn’t until Tony watches Steve lean into the punch that he thinks oh, this is going to be a problem.
━━━
Steve’s taking hits on purpose in the field, so Tony suggests a safer option. It's simple: Tony smacks Steve around, Steve gets the pain fix he’s looking for, everyone leaves happy. Things do not stay simple.
The one with repressed masochist Steve and sadist Tony and everyone getting off on pain a whole bunch.
Not a Breakup by @no-gorms
Tony knew it was a bad idea to start sleeping with Steve. It could mess up team dynamics, make things even more awkward between them in the future, or just plain get in the way of their trying to save the world. Tony foresaw all of the above but not the advent of feelings, and at the most inopportune moment.
Hard Knock Life by @kandisheek
Since the serum Steve hasn't been able to make himself come. His stamina is so unbelievably high that he can't find a partner who can keep up with him either. Lucky for him Tony is just stubborn enough to try.
any other way of loving by @brandnewfashion
In which Steve is bad at dating, Tony isn’t, and neither of them are as subtle as they think.
