while you wait for another flight on the artistic plane, can i interest you on a movie recc? a movie called “Mama” (2013)

it’s horror, also set in the wilderness! it revolves around two young girls (sisters) abandoned in a cabin in the woods being looked after by a strange entity

(also also, i recently found out sophie nélisse’s sister, isabelle nelissé plays one of the sisters)

Oooh, I am interested. It doesn’t look like it’s currently streaming anywhere, per IMDb, but I will keep my eyes open. I didn’t realize there was another Nelisse in the biz!

An investigation into one woman's memory as she is forced to re-examine her first sexual relationship and the stories we tell ourselves in order to survive.

Difficult to watch, but a very important movie. A good example for how one often tends to block or falsely remember things that happenend in the past. The structure of the film is a bit difficult to follow. But it serves well to illustrate the blurring of the past.

It shows how young thirteen really is. Often in Hollywood movies underage characters are played by actors that are considerably older.

It shows how grooming works. And some of the dangers of getting conditioned to endure 'pain' as a form of disciplinary education.

Movie Monday #101

 ‘Movie Monday’ is a blog post I share every Monday talking about the 3  movies that have caught my attention to the most that week. Sharing how  their plots, how their trailers attracted me and what the critics have to say  about them (if it’s already released).  You can click on the name of the movie to see the trailer.

1. Destination Wedding (2018)

The story of two miserable and unpleasant wedding guests, Lindsay and Frank, who develop a mutual affection after discovering that they have a lot in common - they don't like the bride, the groom, the ceremony, themselves or each other.

Starring Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder in the lead roles.

Romantic-comedy is not a rare genre but we certainly are not getting it in abundance anymore but I try not to loose a chance on a good old-school rom-com. This one, while cliche, looks delightful and perfect escapist movie. I mean, we have Keanu and Winona as the lead couple on a foreign land in a romantic movie being relatable and charming. What more does one want?

2. The Captain (2017)

During the last weeks of the Third Reich, a German private steals the uniform of a dead Luftwaffe captain. The allure of authority proves too much to bear, and he pushes the soldiers around him to commit atrocities.

Starring Max Hubacher in the lead role.

I can never get enough of World War 2 stories and this one is going to be sitting on top of that bunch. I did not know about this man but it blows my mind the foolish courage he had and I want to know more about it!

I like that the filmmaker went with a black and white form, it will definitely give the movie a more authentic vibe; also the main actor looks pretty damn fantastic. From the trailer, I caught the themes of greed and power and how it can transform a person into pure evil. I’m undoubtedly intrigued.

3. The Tale (2018)

Jennifer has it all, with a loving boyfriend and a great career as a journalist and professor. But when her mother discovers a story - "The Tale" - that Jennifer wrote when she was 13, detailing a special relationship Jennifer had with two adult coaches, Jennifer returns to the Carolina horse farm where the events transpired to try to reconcile her version of events with the truth.

Starring Laura Dern in the lead role.

With supporting roles by Frances Conroy, Elizabeth Debicki, Jason Ritter and Isabelle Nélisse.

I have been eagerly waiting to see this movie since it was first shown at Sundance and received rave reviews. Movie buffs and critics cannot stop talking about it and I can understand why. The fact that it’s a personal story of the writer-director Jennifer Fox certainly brings a lot more weight to the film. But even objectively speaking, the plot in itself is enough to have people talking.

Sexual abuse and pedophilia has always been a topic of heat and in this #MeToo and #TimesUp era, this movie seems perfectly timed. From the reviews that I have read, it’s been written pretty clearly that the sensitive subject was handled with care and the story as a whole kept the person interested. I, for one, will be on a look out for it!
