In this case, it seems the photograph shown above (Moscow, January 1901), depicting Princess Elisabeth of Hesse between her Russian cousins, Olga and Tatiana, was one of her favourites.

At the bottom left, we can find this photograph in Princess Irene of Hesse’s house at Hemmelmark State. August, 1901.

Caro mondo — Irene Bendinelli

Caro mondo,

ti scrivo questa lettera perché mi manchi tantissimo. Ora più che mai!

Mi trovo a casa, ormai da più di un mese, circondata dal bianco delle pareti domestiche e da qualche spiraglio di luce naturale che filtra dai vetri delle finestre. Come me, ogni altro cittadino che vive su questo pianeta, piegato dall'esercito di un virus micidiale che avanza.

Caro mondo, adesso ti osservo a distanza e ti comprendo meglio, nella tua pienezza: contemplo le tue creature animali e vegetali, ascolto i tuoi suoni, anche quelli impercettibili e respiro i tuoi profumi, come sentimenti floreali. La natura sta rinascendo, doppiamente protagonista dell'attuale stagione primaverile, intenta a recuperare sconfinati spazi e a liberare le proprie energie vitali, che possiamo ascoltare negli acuti strepiti dei gabbiani in una giornata di sole come pure negli starnazzi delle oche in aperta campagna. Adesso è di nuovo possibile, come agli albori di una civiltà, quando la specie umana usciva dalle grotte e, con passo felpato, iniziava a scrutare in ogni direzione intorno a sé, con calma e in silenzio.

Caro mondo, quanto sei meraviglioso! Trionfano di splendore i tuoi colori, adagiati con cura sui vellutati prati, sulle ruvide rocce, sulle ondulate acque, sulle solide terre, sui freddi ghiacciai, sulle ombrose foreste e sui placidi deserti. E sono favolose le variegate forme che hanno i tuoi elementi: stondate le colline, appuntite le montagne, piatte le pianure, lineari le coste sabbiose, frastagliate le scogliere, allungati i colli delle giraffe e allargati quelli degli ippopotami, snodati i corpi dei serpenti e squamati quelli dei coccodrilli, lisci i dorsi dei delfini e corazzati quelli delle tartarughe. Nessuna mano umana, neanche quella di un genio dell'arte, ha mai riprodotto alla perfezione la limpidezza e l'autenticità delle cromature riflesse dalla tua luce divina. Sono canti di voci bianche le sinfonie che arieggiano leggiadre in una sviolinata di clic, cloc, cip, cip, mentre escono timide da gocce di pioggia e da pigolii di uccellini appena nati. Per lievi soffi d'aria, poi, intonano inni alla gioia le alte e snelle canne palustri, che costeggiano bacini lacustri e brevi corsi d'acqua, rivolgendo i loro fusti verso il cielo che resta a guardare. E sono potenti timbri baritonali, che scatenano una rabbia remota in una spedita rincorsa di cavalli al galoppo, gli ululati dei forti venti che preannunciano tempeste, temporali e tifoni.

Caro mondo, grande è il desiderio di tornare a esplorare la miriade dei tuoi sentieri, ogni volta diversi e sorprendenti! Vicoli, viuzze, slarghi, strade e sotterranei, in pietra, di ghiaia, in mattoni, in terra battuta, stretti, ampi o tortuosi ci guidano, come genitori premurosi, verso la visione di spettacoli unici. Dimore storiche, borghi assonnati, balconi fioriti, campanili svettanti, piazze accoglienti, giardini rigogliosi e ruscelli chiacchierini si aprono alla nostra vista, spalancandoci gli occhi e i cuori in un idillio. Sono grandi e piccoli idilli, al pari di quelli decantati da Giacomo Leopardi, i quadretti rurali, autentici e ameni che si fanno poesia, come poetico è, a Recanati, il panorama che si estende illimitato tra le colline e i monti marchigiani dal colle dell'infinito.

Caro mondo, da più di un mese chiusa in casa, constato quanto la quotidianità, finora, abbia reso piccolo ciò che in realtà è grande, quanto i ritmi, gli orari, gli impegni e la frenesia della vita moderna ci abbiano costretti a rincorrere il tempo, con il timore di non raggiungerlo mai, quando invece ora è proprio quel tempo, ritrovato, che ci serve a riflettere. Riflettere su di noi, sull'essenzialità di essere compagni di noi stessi, riflettere sugli altri, avvertendo veramente la loro mancanza e riflettere su una dimensione più ampia, nella quale la nostra vita è inscritta. Il distanziamento e la solitudine di questi giorni permettono di stabilire una relazione con l'immensità che ci trascende, di uscire metaforicamente dai nostri gusci per non pensare soltanto a noi, ai nostri bisogni e ai nostri interessi, ma per guardarci intorno, per sviluppare la consapevolezza che il mondo va avanti anche da sé, girando con le sue storie nello spazio senza fine. Finora noi esseri umani siamo stati distratti dalla punta delle nostre scarpe e ci siamo rivelati superficiali nei discorsi privi di logica, ignorando il mondo oltre, fuori dalle nostre sfere. Adesso, da lontano, è possibile osservare con adeguato stupore un fenomeno naturale come un bagliore che, al contrario, visto da vicino, sarebbe impercettibile.

Caro mondo, per troppo tempo sei stato dilaniato da minuscoli uomini strapieni di ricchezze, che ti hanno voluto governare a loro piacimento, senza curarsi del tuo stato di salute, dell'aumento dell'inquinamento, dei cambiamenti climatici e della qualità della vita, pensando soltanto alla qualità dei loro superflui prodotti. Valeva unicamente, almeno fino a un mese fa, la logica del profitto, del guadagno, del denaro: microscopici esseri crudeli sono stati disposti anche ad abbattere interi boschi, pur di cementificare, costruire e far girare l'economia, sottraendo a ogni specie vivente, anche a quelle innocenti, preziose quantità di ossigeno.

Adesso, alla legge del contrappasso dobbiamo tutti attenerci, per espiare le nostre colpe, per redimere i nostri peccati e sperare nella resa finale dell'esercito virale: che abbia pietà di noi, amen!

Caro mondo, a quel punto i sopravvissuti di questa pandemia comprenderanno davvero la grandezza del creato, tornandola a guardare con lo sguardo di un bambino; apprezzeranno intensamente la bellezza della natura, inchinandosi umilmente di fronte a tanta magnificenza; ascolteranno ogni minimo segnale dell'aria, dell'acqua, del fuoco e della terra, come all'alba di una rinnovata civiltà; percepiranno qualsiasi lampo di sensazioni e ciascun flusso di sentimenti, senza più rimanere indifferenti; ameranno la vita nella sua pienezza, ancora di più e fino in fondo, fino all'ultima goccia di sudore, quando potranno riabbracciare i propri cari.

Caro mondo, ti saluto con un desideroso arrivederci, un arrivederci spero a presto. Penso a te con l'animo pieno di fiducia e speranza: che questo tragico periodo sia origine di un cruciale miglioramento di cui tutti abbiamo urgente bisogno, una riscoperta dei valori più profondi dell'esistenza.

Rose’s siblings in Born Vampire AU

Anastasia - adopted 1917 at 8 years old. Marge and Julie weren’t looking for children, but Anastasia fell into their hands. The girl’s parents were fleeing the Russian Revolution and did not make the trip to America. She was shielded by a few family friends, but none wanted to keep her forever. When the women heard of this orphan they opened their doors, starting their initiative to adopt all born vampires who need homes. Anastasia is not her birth name, but one she has taken on over the years, liking to pretend she is the Princess Anastasia when it suits her.

Irene - adopted 1926 at 8 months old. They never intended on adopting more children, but Irene was so young and so alone that they felt the need to take her on. She is always shy and quiet, even now, but she is the most observant in the family, often knowing things far before anyone else puts the pieces together.

Wilhelmina - adopted 1928 at 5 years old. Though she is older than Irene she always feels younger than her as she entered the house later. She is often the protector of her siblings, even into their adulthood when they don’t always need the help. She’s one the few children who has living relatives, but they are human and unaware of how to care for a born vampire. Now that she is slow-aging she only sees her family from afar, hating that she has to visit gravesites more than reunions.

Luther - adopted 1944 at 2 years old. His parents were killed by hunters, and by now the authorities know where to send orphaned born vampires. Though he’s the first boy he fits in well with all the women, though brings a bit of chaos into the house when he’s younger. He is the most ambitious of the children, starting his own business that has grown into quite the empire.

Vladimir - adopted 1956 at 12 years old. The oldest adopted child, and the biggest handful, Vlad was reluctant at first to join the family. It isn’t until he is an adult that he appreciates his moms and siblings, though his lifestyle isn’t always endorsed by Marge and Julie.

Caleb - adopted 1960 at 2 months old. His mother had heard of the home for orphaned vampires, and wanted to give her son a chance, though he was not an orphan. She got to Florida as soon as she could, handing off her son knowing that the women would give him the home he couldn’t have otherwise.

Carter - adopted 1976 at 1 year old. He is Caleb’s younger brother, though their mother tried to keep him for a bit longer. When it was evident she would not be a good mother she brought him to where his brother was. Though there is a decent age gap between them the boys are the closest of all the siblings, and they share a home together now.

Rose - adopted 1995 at 4 years old. After her mother died she wasn’t wanted by her remaining family and was sent by social services to Marge and Julie.

Vitali - adopted 2018 at 1 month old. The son of Vladimir and a human slave. Vlad loves his son, though has no fatherly desire to take care of him. As a result Marge and Julie are more than happy to take the boy in, knowing he will be well looked after in their care.

Juni 2019 unterlag er überraschend gegen den Amerikaner mexikanischer Herkunft Andy Ruiz Jr. durch Technischen K.o. in der siebten Runde und verlor dadurch seine Weltmeistertitel. Anthony Oluwafemi Olaseni Joshua, OBE (* 15. Oktober 1989 in Watford, England) ist ein britischer Boxer und ehemaliger Weltmeister im Schwergewicht nach Version der IBF, WBA, WBO und IBO. Er wurde 2011 Amateur-Vizeweltmeister und 2012 Olympiasieger im Superschwergewicht. Joshua wird von Robert McCracken trainiert. Anthony Joshua wurde als Sohn nigerianischer Einwanderer in Watford im Nordwesten von London geboren und wuchs gemeinsam mit zwei Schwestern und einem Bruder in seinem Geburtsort auf. Er verließ die Schule vorzeitig und begann eine Lehre als Maurer. Seine Jugend beschrieb er als „außerordentlich glücklich“, dennoch rutschte er in das kriminelle Milieu ab und war in Schlägereien und Brandstiftungen verwickelt. Durch eine Verurteilung im Jahr 2009 musste er 13 Monate lang eine elektronische Fußfessel tragen. 2011 wurden bei einer Verkehrskontrolle der Polizei in Colindale im Londoner Stadtbezirk Barnet über 220 Gramm Marihuana in seinem Fahrzeug gefunden, was aufgrund der Menge des Betäubungsmittels eine Anklage wegen Drogenbesitzes mit der Absicht des Verkaufs nach sich zog. Joshua saß zwei Wochen in Untersuchungshaft und entging nur knapp einer mehrjährigen Haftstrafe. Er wurde zu zwölf Monaten gemeinnütziger Arbeit und 100 Sozialstunden verurteilt. Zum Boxsport kam er erst im Alter von 18 Jahren, als er 2007 seinen Cousin zu einem Probetraining beim Finchley Amateur Boxing Club in Barnet begleitete. Er begann regelmäßig beim Finchley ABC zu trainieren und absolvierte noch im selben Jahr seinen ersten Amateurkampf. Er wurde bereits 2009 Englischer Neulingsmeister und gewann das internationale „Haringey Tournament“ in London. In diesem Jahr kassierte er jedoch auch seine erste Niederlage, und zwar gegen den Landsmann Dillian Whyte nach Punkten. 2010 wurde er Englischer Meister, gewann erneut das „Haringey Tournament“ und darüber hinaus die Britischen Meisterschaften in Manchester. Zudem besiegte er in Ländervergleichskämpfen die Iren Chris Devanney und Chris Turner. 2011 wurde er abermals Englischer Meister und besiegte in einem Ländervergleichskampf den Schweden Otto Wallin. Er wurde daraufhin zu den 39. Europameisterschaften nach Ankara geschickt, wo er den Deutschen Eric Brechlin mit 23:16 und Cathal McMonagle aus Irland mit 22:10 besiegte. Seinen ersten Profikampf bestritt er am 5. Oktober 2013 in London gegen Emanuele Leo (Bilanz: 8-0-0) und gewann durch K. o. in der ersten Runde. Im September 2014 gewann er vorzeitig gegen Konstantin Airich. Im Oktober desselben Jahres schlug er Denis Bachtow durch TKO in Runde 2 und sicherte sich den internationalen Titel der WBC. Gegen Michael Sprott gewann er in einem BBBofC-Eliminator im November 2014 bereits in der ersten Runde. Im Mai 2015 besiegte er Kevin Johnson vorzeitig in Runde 2 und verteidigte damit erstmals seinen WBC-International-Titel. Johnson musste in der ersten Runde insgesamt zweimal zu Boden, beim zweiten Mal fiel er mit dem Oberkörper sogar durch die Ringseile. Es war das erste Mal, dass Johnson, den sich Vitali Klitschko 2009 für eine freiwillige Titelverteidigung aussuchte und nach Punkten besiegte, k. o. ging. Klitschko war nicht der einzige bekannte Boxer, gegen den Johnson im Ring stand. Er trat unter anderem auch gegen die Engländer Tyson Fury und Dereck Chisora an. Chisora konnte ihn zwar zu Boden schicken, aber letztlich nicht ausknocken. Im September desselben Jahres traf er auf den 2,01 m großen, 113 kg schweren, bis dahin ungeschlagenen (Bilanz: 21-0-0) Schotten Gary Cornish. Cornish war bis dahin nicht nur bei den Profis ungeschlagen, sondern auch bei den Amateuren. Joshua schlug Cornish bereits in der ersten Runde k. o. und fügte ihm somit seine erste Niederlage zu. Mit diesem Sieg verteidigte er nicht nur den internationalen Gürtel der WBC, sondern errang zugleich den Commonwealth-Titel. Exakt drei Monate später trat Joshua gegen seinen bis dahin stärksten Gegner an, seinen Landsmann, den jamaikanisch-stämmigen, körperlich starken Puncher Dillian Whyte, der ihn bei den Amateuren besiegt hatte. In der 7. Runde schlug Joshua Whyte k. o. Am 9. April 2016 boxte Joshua gegen den US-Amerikaner Charles Martin. Er gewann durch K. o. in der zweiten Runde und ist seitdem aktueller Weltmeister der IBF. Gegen den US-Amerikaner Dominic Breazeale absolvierte Joshua gut zehn Wochen später seine erste (freiwillige) Titelverteidigung in der The O2 Arena in London. Auch dieses Gefecht konnte der Brite durch technischen K. o. in Runde 7 für sich entscheiden. Am 10. Dezember 2016 verteidigte er gegen Eric Molina in Manchester, England seinen Weltmeistertitel der International Boxing Federation (IBF) im Schwergewicht. Er gewann durch technisches K. o. in Runde 3. Am 29. April 2017 kämpfte Anthony Joshua vor 90.000 Zuschauern im Wembley Stadion gegen Wladimir Klitschko. Es ging um die Verteidigung des IBF-Titels sowie um die vakanten Titel des IBO und des WBA-Superchampions. Joshua konnte den Kampf durch technischen K. o. in der 11. Runde gewinnen, nachdem beide Boxer in der fünften bzw. in der sechsten Runde zu Boden gegangen waren und angezählt hatten werden müssen. Dieser Kampf war der bisher längste in seiner Profikarriere; zuvor war kein anderer Gegner über die 7. Runde hinaus gekommen. Für den 28. Oktober 2017 war eine Titelverteidigung seiner Weltmeisterschaftstitel gegen den Bulgaren Kubrat Pulew geplant. Dieser musste jedoch knapp zwei Wochen vor dem Kampf verletzungsbedingt absagen. Als Ersatzgegner für den 28. Oktober wurde der für Frankreich antretende Kameruner Carlos Takam gefunden. Joshua trat diesen Kampf, der im Millennium Stadium in der walisischen Hauptstadt Cardiff ausgetragen wurde, mit Rekordgewicht an (115,2 kg). Joshua schlug Takam in Runde 4 zu Boden und entschied dieses Gefecht durch Abbruch in Runde 10 für sich. Ebenfalls im Millennium Stadium kämpfte Joshua Ende März im Jahr 2018 gegen den 26-jährigen Neuseeländer Joseph Parker. Dieser Kampf war eine Titelvereinigung – es ging um die Weltmeistertitel der Verbände IBF, WBA (Superchampion) und WBO. Vor rund 78 000 Zuschauern gewann Joshua durch einstimmige Punktentscheidung. Am 22. September verteidigte er diese WM-Titel im Londoner Wembleystadion gegen den russischen WBA-Pflichtherausforderer Alexander Powetkin und siegte durch einen technischen K.o. in der 7. Runde.
