#CinemaNova #IranianFilmFestival Old Men Never Die (2019, writer/director Reza Jamali). This first feature is a slowly meditative social satire of a village forsaken by death, leaving the ageing single men sharing a house, bickering, taking long baths and periodically needing the young soldiers specifically stationed there to stop them committing suicide. The film beautifully captures the spectacular setting, the textures and the nature, but there’s too little progression and too much repetition (which may be the point…) (at Cinema Nova) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4zJ3MbHtJH/?igshid=1k5g2zbfk0q52

"Chicken With Plums" directed by Marjane Satrapi and Vincent Paronnaud (2011)
Tumblr media
Teheran, 1950's: Nasser Ali a talented musician has his precious violin destroyed in an act of deep emotional cruelty. Without success, he tries to find a replacement, and when the hunt for a promising Stradivarius goes awry, he decides to never come out of his room and wait for death to arrive.
This is the true starting point of the film. In the eight days that Nasser Ali has left to live, he begins a soul searching journey, as he remembers his past, contemplates his present, and is shown a glimpse of his children's future, which will sadly be less than promising. Azrael, the Angel of Death makes a startling appearance as the narrator of the film, taking the audience on a magical carpet ride into Nasser Ali's life and in the end, his willing death.
A French-German collaboration, "Chicken With Plums" (Poulet aux prunes) is a brilliant narrative film, with beautiful backdrop cinematography, and a dramatic-humorous tone that amply displays not only the perils and magic of life but also the reflections that come at the end of it. It is an amazing display of profoundly magical storytelling, that reminds us that life is a complicated and delicate amalgamation of tragedy and comedy.
The film had mixed reviews by critics, but was the recipient of the Best Feature Film Director at the Noor Iranian Film Festival. It is interesting to point out that "Chicken With Plums" was banned in Iran for its "allegedly high erotic content."

#CinemaNova #IranianFilmFestival Tehran: City of Love (2018, writer/director Ali Jaberansari). The title is highly ironic: three people, in slightly connecting stories, are each stuck in a rut when the promise of love brings them to sudden, giddy life. Then, amid embarrassments of all kinds, these unrealistic ideas crash and they are left forlorn… but a quiet optimism remains for realistic positive change. A lovely, textured film with great performances, touching on some taboos. (at Cinema Nova) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4zG5-0nj1x/?igshid=1s62cehy0mlhx

#CinemaNova #IranianFilmFestival The Prisoner (2017, writer/director Ali Mozaffari). A short film made as a graduation piece from the VCA and shot in the 1864 Geelong Prison (the director introduced it to us). A artist is held and forbidden to produce art of any kind - but can you actually extinguish the creative spirit? (at Cinema Nova) https://www.instagram.com/p/B4zFmoUnrrI/?igshid=pjn2xf0cgv9d

#CinemaNova #IranianFilmFestival My Second Year in College (2019, director Rasoul Sadrameli). A girl tries her best to be a responsible companion to her friend but a series of disasters and embarrassments ensue. A quiet, intimate look at a young girl’s blundering, where every white lie builds a web of deceit. Not a major achievement but gently impressive. One of my favourite shots from the weekend. Shot with ambient light but just has that high key look which I had no intention of creating but was inevitable because of the available light and the aesthetics of the place. Shot at the 8th London Iranian Film Festival at Greenwood Theatre near London Bridge. #GreenwoodTheatre #London #LondonBridge #UKIFF #UnitedKingdom #westonstreet #ambientlight #filmfestival #iranianfilms #iranianfilmfestival #londoniranians #4toconvert #canon600d #canon #photographer #eventphotographer #EventPhotography #Photography #film #digitalphotography #KingsCollege
