Steve is comfortable on his back, laying against the trunk of his car, looking up at the night sky, when he sees a shooting star rush across the vastness of space. It was right there in front of him a second ago, and then gone in the blink of an eye. 

Like it maybe never existed at all.

It was pretty, the few moments he got to spend looking at it, and he wishes Robin could have seen it.

Hell, he wishes Eddie could have seen it. 

The last thing Eddie saw was that awful, bat-infested, red sky of the Upside Down, and that’s a fucking shame. Steve quickly thinks: I wish we'd had more time. I wish you'd gotten a different ending, a different life. I wish I could have fixed this. 

But he can't fix this. They didn't have more time. And Eddie barely got to live at all. They came up with a plan on the fly, a little too unprepared, and Eddie didn’t come home at the end of the night. And as much as Steve hates it, regrets it. That can't be undone. 

Steve can never unsee Eddie's body on the ground, can never unsee Dustin crouched over him, protectively. Dustin tried. Steve tried. Nancy tried. Robin tried. Nothing they did was gonna change it. 

Eddie was just gone, and they couldn’t fix that.

They were too late.

And it can't be fixed that the gates started closing before they figured out a way to bring him back through. To bring his body home. It's a regret Steve lives with every damn day. You don't leave a man behind, and he did exactly that. Against his will, maybe, but it still happened on his watch and he feels like that's on him. 

Robin was screaming, pulling on him. Trying desperately to drag him along with her, trying to get him to let go of Eddie's body. He didn't want to give up, and he was barely hearing Robin, or Nancy, as they were both yelling at him to come on, right now. Nancy kept turning her head, screaming at him, as she helped walk a limping Dustin towards the trailer. Steve thinks that Robin may not have been able to get him to stop trying to lift Eddie, if they hadn’t used Dustin as the reason he had to go, had to move. Now.

Something was happening, and it felt like the beginning of an earthquake. Small tremors, rolling under their feet. Steve stood, barely able to keep his balance. Taking one last look at Eddie, in apology. In sorrow. 

In regret, for what would never be. For Eddie. For any of them. 

Eddie had cut the sheet, and now Dustin needed help getting back up and through the gate, and the girls couldn’t do it alone. So, Steve went. Followed them, helped. Found a step stool and pushed each of them up through the gate, and back into the real world. 

He'd turned, and looked towards the door, considering. 

And Robin had been standing there, above him, crying. Begging him to just come through. Hand stretched out, holding the remnants of tied together sheets for him to grab. He stepped down one rung on the ladder, and she had shrieked at the same time the ground buckled, groaning, as it got ready to give way, and he grabbed a hold of the sheet, and pulled himself through. 

They crawled out of the trailer in the real world, just as it started to split, getting devoured by the fiery earth below. 

And that was that. 

They had a war to fight, to win.

And they did.

Vecna is gone, but so is Eddie. 

And now the shooting star is long gone, too. 

Steve looks at the stars left behind, just like him. 

But maybe Eddie did see it, somewhere. Steve's learned that nothing is impossible. Not now. Things happen that can't be explained. Walls open in bedrooms and monsters crawl out. There can be tunnels underground, well-worn paths just for monsters to travel deep beneath your feet. 

And there can be a gate at the bottom of a lake that greedily sucks you under, and spits you back out into hell.

Weird shit happens in this world, that's just a fact.

So, there's no reason he couldn't believe that Eddie saw that shooting star, somewhere else, in space and time. 

But Steve doesn't believe that, not really, but for a brief moment he can pretend he does. He really wants to believe that somewhere, in some other universe, Eddie was looking up at the same night sky. One that wasn’t red, wasn’t bleeding with the color of devastation, of evil. One that was full of bright, beautiful stars. Full of potential. Of a life yet unlived, undreamed, with endless possibilities laid out before him.

Eddie was only twenty years old. He hadn't really lived life, not yet. Hadn't got the chance to see the world, to see that there are things beyond the narrow-minded confines of Hawkins, Indiana. 

Steve's twenty now, too. Almost twenty-one. His birthday came and went, with little fanfare. No longer a teenager. He's caught up to Eddie, and very soon, he'll surpass him. 

He swallows, trying to shove the emotion of that realization down.

It's been a hard year, harder than any of the others. 

Because Steve’s become fixated, canonizing this man he barely knew. Robin has tried, desperately, to get him to stop obsessing. To let the guilt subside. He doesn't know Eddie Munson. Not really. And now he never will. 

And that's a whole bunch of horseshit. 

He feels a strange pulling in his stomach, and before can even sit up, he pops out of existence.

Sitting on Mom's guest bed

As she slowly continues releasing things

All the things that once made her feel safe

Or so I believe.

Things don't make me safe either, from

Loss we can't avoid

She's figured that out too

Blessing the world from her abundance

Friends, family, the charity shops

Her house gets less crowded

But

The tomato 🍅 plants in the side yard

We went to tuck them up safe in their frames

They flower, already setting fruit

And there, the worm 🐛 spoils the fruit

Drills the stem

She said I can dig up one of last season's

Volunteer tomatoes

(what we have always called the self seeded)

Take a little bit of her garden home with me.

I, too,

Will bless the world from her abundance

Hopefully to fruit and flower for more years

If I can be a frame to help her stand

I'll hold her up, like she's done for me

I guess all we ever have is the time we have

No way to know what that is, or how long

In the Future

Thousands of sweeps into the future, a seadweller with pierced fins steps into the brooding caverns to begin work. Rhivar Kondez knows, or strongly assumes, they were sent through the planet’s mysterious Timehole as a grub - if they cannot return to the time they were supposed to live in, as no adult has ever passed through the hole, they still have a goal: flush as many of the planet’s limited grubs down the hole as possible. If they’re unlucky, the grubs will simply be sent to a happier time and place, able to live somewhere other than a depopulated rock. But if they are lucky, they will be able to stop the future they now inhabit.

Rhivar finds almost no other Caretakers in the caverns, but the four they do know are just as miserable as them. They agree, together, to bend the rest of their efforts to the same goal: preventing the rise of the stifling Empress Kendri and the abandonment of Al Torenn. It’s not a goal any of them have much certainty about. But it’s an idea they can all agree on: that this empress has absolutely devastated their planet, and that she is at fault for the final exodus of the local population.

At one point, the Fuschia of the group would have challenged the current empress for power and restored the planet to order through direct politics. But the empress had made herself thoroughly inaccessible, and Trelyn was still recovering from her recent paralysis - even if she had made her way to the empress’s fortress, the fight would have been a gruesome joke. So they gambled together, the five of them, hoping against hope that somewhere in the past, something would change and their lives would never need to have happened in the first place.

There is no guarantee. But Rhivar refuses not to try. It’s all they have left to work with.

Likely ex-marines that turned raider mercenaries, the Hellcat Company often uses the eponymously named power armor for their officers, now available for the sims 3. Helmet in glasses, left arm in armband, right arm in bracelet, torso in necklace, legs in garters, and requires into the future. I've made several additional textures for it as well.

What are your favorites pieces of science-fiction? And are there any you'd recommend? I'm currently playing the Mass Effect trilogy and plan to read novels like Children of Time and Last and First Men, so I'm on something of a science-fiction kick at the moment.

Science fiction isn’t so much my wheelhouse but there are some I’ve really enjoyed!

The Imperial Radch trilogy is relatively light reading, and I really like how it approaches AI and gender wrt imperialism, even if the character work tends to follow the path of least resistance.

Ursula K Le Guin is a mandatory mention; The Left Hand of Darkness and The Dispossessed are titans of science fiction even if I personally prefer her later works where she got more experimental with prose. The Word for World is Forest is a short story from this period of her work that’s one of my favorites of hers.

Ghost in the Shell is an iconic piece of cyberpunk dripping in mood and atmosphere, and is insanely influential. Highly recommended!

Speaking of influential pieces of cyberpunk, both Blade Runner movies are really good (but look for one of the cuts of the original that cuts out Deckard’s internal monologue which was added to the theatrical cut seemingly to ruin every bit of atmosphere and tension)

For a final movie recommendation, Starship Troopers is a very well executed satire of the fascist tendencies of science fiction stories.

This Is How You Lose The Time War is a weird, fun time travel novel about the rivalry and correspondence between two agents of bitterly opposed timeline-manipulating transhumanist singularities. It was written by two authors in a back and fourth epistolary style. It’s a lot of fun.

The Martian is really fun as a sort of crunchy near future scifi macguyver survival story. I liked the movie with Matt Damon as well.

As for video games, ones that I enjoy specifically as scifi stories and not as like video games with lasers:

SOMA is one of the most haunting games I’ve played, not because of the spooky scary monsters (which are whatever) but because of how ruthlessly it presents its themes around consciousness and ontology.

Alien: Isolation is the move if you want a game that’s just straight up spooky scary monsters.

Deus Ex and System Shock, if you can stomach a bit of old gameplay, are phenomenal explorations of scifi themes.

If you just want a dumb scifi sandbox to play around in, No Man’s Sky is way better now than when it first released.

How have you been enjoying Mass Effect?

FemmeBot Yukari - by LadySmoks

Yukari is a conversion of one of the MMD bots, created by Kuroyu, and available thru DeviantArt website.

Yukari has a head and body that are a bit different from other FemmeBot models, so they are really not interchangeable.

Yukari's hair can work with other FemmeBot heads, and her headgear is an accessory, found in Sim CAS Accessories Armbands. The headgear is converted to basegame, and can be used for other bots, AND regular Sims if you wish. It uses the aWT hat sliders for a bit of adjustment if desired... here.

NOTE: Yukari's head and face are static. Nothing moves. Eyes do not blink, mouth does not open and close when she speaks. As you see, this head is completely different from a Sim head, so I was not able to properly transfer bone structure to get things to work with the EA rig. It's possible that I will work on this in the future, but for now, the head is static.

There is a head, one piece body, hair and headgear accy,

4 packages, in one zip file. All parts come in one preset with CAS thumbnail, and are recolorable.

As with all FemmeBots, Yukari is assembled in the EP11 bot station, so that EP is required.

She is a one piece design, and No Bottom option is required.
