And So It Begins.... Season 2..........
This article at screenrant with showrunner Zabel was published a couple of days ago..
The title is somewhat misleading....
In an interview with TVLine, Zabel addressed the possibility of a romance developing between Daryl and Isabelle in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon season 2. Zabel acknowledges that the pair have formed a connection over the course of season 1, but that a relationship would take a lot of work. Check out his statement below:
That’s a good question. A deep connection has clearly formed between them over the course of the five episodes we’ve seen so far, and it continues to deepen in episode six. They have to deal with conflict about what [their relationship] means in the future for both of them, because they have different goals and ideas about what comes next. So it’s an interesting, kind of profound place they find themselves in at the end of the season. The idea was, from the beginning, to really form a mature bond between two people who are really different… and to follow that in a truthful way. And that includes following not only the story that we were telling but following the performances of Norman and Cleménce. We tried to be really nuanced in terms of how we developed that and what romance may be read into it or not by the audience. The actors feel what they feel, and the characters feel what they feel. We’re not trying to force anything. There’s this whole idea of a surrogate family forming. That may include romance, but a surrogate family was really the idea behind the premise. The big question for Daryl was, ‘What happens if in your effort to go home, you wind up forming a sort of home in the place where you are?’ That goes beyond just romance. That’s more about ‘How do you fit into the world, especially an apocalyptic world? In that scenario, what is your place? What is the place that you’re most needed, and what is the place you most want to be?’
However, it's unclear if a relationship between Daryl and Isabelle could work. Despite the pair growing close and becoming parental figures to Laurent (Louis Puech Scigliuzzi), their relationship has been strictly platonic. Isabelle is a nun and has shown no indication of wanting to break her vows. Additionally, she has shot down the idea of a romance with Daryl anytime it arises. There's a chance that he could still get a love story in The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, even if it's not Isabelle. Perhaps Isabelle teaching him about family could inspire him to let someone else in finally.
That is the end of the article.
My thoughts:
My take on this is that the Isabelle/Laurent "family" tease is serving a few purposes:
It is supposed to create angst and interest in the France storyline.
It is yet another example that Daryl is now ready for a wife and child.
In Season 5, Daryl was, in many ways, less emotionally mature than Beth. I think of what happened in Still. Beth handled the loss of their "family" more maturely than Daryl. It's well known that childhood trauma often arrests emotional development.
As Daryl has slowly made some peace with his past, he has had a variety of relationships that have helped him understand husband/father dynamics. Leah and Connie have helped him understand attraction and developing, or not, that into a romance. Lydia, Judith, and RJ have all been surrogate children.
Isabelle and Laurent combine the mother figure and the child into a type of surrogate family. They are NOT the happy ending. They are another "therapy" step.
Additionally, I don't see either actor actually wanting to develop this into a full romance. It would negate Isabelle's claim that God and becoming a nun lead her to change from her former self.
Norman sorta of let it drop that Season 2 is the end of their time in France.{He jokingly said maybe Costa Rica should be next) Zabel said that there are 6 episodes planned for season 2 as well.
SO, that means either:
Isabelle and Laurent leave with Daryl and Carol. Can you see Isabelle giving up the idea that "Laurent is the Savior of France" in the next 6 episodes? Especially when much of those episodes have already been spoiled to be Genet's backstory, Carol's story, and more insight into walker experiments?
I don't think so.
OR
Isabelle dies and Laurent leaves with Daryl, Carol, and possibly others. This would complete Isabelle's redemption arc. I will post something later on the "Land Rover of Love" scene in episode 6, but something no one is commenting on is how when Laurent is talking about "having to do terrible things" he looks at Isabelle and says, "Like what you did to my mother." Isabelle is shocked. We saw her do NOTHING terrible to her sister. I think we will find out about that next season. So, this could be a definite possibility.
OR
Isabelle and Laurent stay in France and work with Fallou's group to rebuild after Genet is defeated. I think this the most likely senario.
Thoughts?

The particular Party Wall Act: What's That All About
Firstly, without dull you with typically the detail, i want to provide you a quick background. The Party Wall Act (The Act) as we know it nowadays was effectively given birth to from the Greater london Building Acts (LBA). As you will appreciate London has a large number of properties which happen to be constructed next to 1 another, and neighbourly disputes were slowing the construction procedure. The LBA introduced measures to help to make it easier for developers and residence owners to carry out do the job along boundary ranges and reduce the degree of disputes by aiming specific obligations on both parties. The LBA was used efficiently working in london for numerous years until eventually in 1996 it was decided to renovate the act plus roll it out nationwide as The particular Party Wall Act 1996. The Action is far reaching plus comes into have fun more than you might think. But most likely not alone if you do not know much about it. Many builders I realize either don't understand regarding it, or worse ignore it. Professionals aren't immune possibly. You're probably interested in this short article because you're planning to hold out a structure project, or might be your neighbour will be. It might be a tiny extension or loft area conversion, or some thing on a greater scale. The take action doesn't consider dimensions it only functions on principal. The particular initial aspect features course to determine whether the act is definitely applicable to begin with. If you are in any doubt that is always highly recommended to find professional advice in addition to many circumstances the positioning is not dark and white. Inside crude terms yet , a party wall structure can be a structure contributed by two others who live nearby which would contain boundary walls or even fences as effectively as the walls into a building. Probably on this factor the title of the work is a little bit of misleading and much more compared to this, this may also end up being applicable if you propose to construct some sort of wall or developing on land in which no wall or physical boundary currently is out there. In a modern day environment where almost all properties are in close proximity to one another it is usually the situation that the take action will become applicable during any construction project that consists of digging foundations close to to a boundary line. It may also be suitable for loft conversion rates or building refurbishments where the get together wall is not being altered, nevertheless support is necessary from the walls for steel supports or suspended wooden floors or ceiling etc. In association, it may come into play for operate that you would feel is minor, such as slicing in to a wall in order to insert a weatherproof detail or flashing. When you will possess deduced the work is far starting and is generally applicable when an individual carry out construction function close to neighbouring buildings / land. My personal advice would be to consult some sort of surveyor who features party wall encounter should you be unsure. The majority of surveyors would become willing to give some free guidance over the telephone of course, if the job is local to be able to them, you may frequently find that they are going to give you a free trip to examine your particular job in the hope that, if the act can be applied an individual will appoint them to undertake the part for you. Certainly in my professional encounter as being a chartered developing surveyor I give free advice about a regular base in the desire that it will lead in order to an instruction. Right now there are surveyors who will charge regardless however the key, as often is to agree a new scope of support and any cost in advance to stay away from confusion. Then you definitely know where you have. After you have deduced that will the wall or structure is actually a celebration wall you need to figure out whether the take action is applicable to the work getting carried out. The particular Act is roughly 15 pages found in length and break up into 22 parts with various sub-sections. It is far from therefore a new lengthy document plus many of typically the sections include understanding and explanation which usually means that one of the most relevant sections are even more condensed. There is however two key sections which implement most commonly and the property owner would be advised to know; Section 2: Fix etc: of celebration wall: rights associated with owner - It sets out the particular rights of typically the owners of the get together wall controlled by helping the appropriate notice. Such rights designated from 2 (2) (a) - (2) (n) include this sort of works as; "to make good, repair, or demolish and even rebuild, a party structure or get together fence wall" simply because well as "to cut into a party structure for any purpose (which may be or even add the purpose regarding inserting a humid confirmation course). The complete record is set in the act plus covers most job, other than some what superficial, that may possibly be completed to a wall structure. Under most instances where any function will be carried out and about directly to the shared wall, it would be expected that typically the act will appear into play, even though there are exceptions and you would certainly be advised in order to take advice. The second section which is certainly likely to be most suitable is Section 6th: Adjacent excavation and even construction. Once once more the technicalities happen to be set out within the act but may be bewildering. In fact nevertheless , if you propose to dig deep into within 6 metre distances of an next to party wall as well as structure (remembering a party wall is also a garden wall membrane or fence) typically the act may become applicable, if particular criteria relating in order to depth of excavation in relation in order to any party walls are achieved. In case you are excavating within 3 metre distances the act is more than likely applicable. Once you have determined that will; a) the wall membrane is a celebration wall and b) based upon the scope of do the job or proximity associated with excavation the phrases of the take action are applicable, it will certainly be necessary in order to stick to the procedures set down within the particular act as a way to shield your position.
Tumblr media
The first procedure is to be able to serve notice upon the adjoining proprietor to inform all of them of the function being carried out there. There is zero requirement to appoint a surveyor in order to serve these sees for you and structure templates are accessible online to obtain from various resources if you would like to do-it-yourself. But if you perform propose to assist notice yourself, end up being mindful of the truth that as with most things where an individual might not have adequate knowledge, the fallout to getting it flawed can have legal significance. On this basis that is normally advised that you look for professional assistance. The notices, when offered will be diverse depending upon if the work falls below section 2, section 6 or each (there are additional sections but as these are fewer commonly applicable I possess not included commentary with this article), as too will get the length regarding time applicable between the notice becoming served and function commencing. The find under section two will provide a couple of months notice and even the notice below section 6 will provide one month right away which work can easily commence as long as everything is at order in terms of the work. Once again there are numerous outcome relating to adjacent owner dissent, not response to notices or even sheer bloody mindedness but I'll keep these for one other day, or with regard to your party wall membrane surveyor to advise you upon. Or you may find that typically the adjoining owner only consents towards the job in which circumstance you can commence earlier by communal consent! Set up adjacent owner does approval then I might advise that a schedule of condition get ready on the particular wall to ensure that you need a record regarding any cracks or defects before an individual start work. You needed be amazed with the number of times some sort of neighbour spots breaks after work provides been carried out, that will were actually there before! If even so the adjoining owner dissents to the particular work and appoints their own surveyor, as they are entitled to perform under the behave, you will also have to have a party wall structure award to doc agreed standards in addition to incorporate the timetable of condition. Underneath these circumstances, until you really know exactly what you are performing you need help. It's worth noting on the other hand, when your neighbor does appoint the surveyor then as building owner a person are likely in order to be liable for their fees. The Act is really a totally established act involving parliament therefore is regulation. Ignoring the Act frequently occurs place (often through lack regarding awareness) but theoretically the perpetrator is usually then breaking typically the law. https://greaterlondonsurveyor.co.uk/best-right-of-light-consultants-london/ could move into detail regarding the implications of intentionally failing to provide notice but in the event that you really are a building owner reading this article write-up then you are usually clearly already mindful of the act and anxious that the procedure is correctly adopted. Should you be on the other side, wherever a neighbour has not served observe on you, there is recourse but you should search for professional advice. It is usually worth noting of which ignorance is zero defence when that comes to typically the law. It is believed that the behave is just made like a money spinner for professional consultants but this couldn't be further through the truth. Of course there is the industry built close to the act plus professionals do fee for their services, but there will be enough competition in order to ensure that fees remain reasonable. It is actually a great enabling act that ensures that the particular positions of both parties are protected and much more notably, ensures that neighbours cannot stop enhancement or repair without sufficient reason. On this factor the act can frequently save fees high was once a prospect of litigation plus dispute. Despite this specific, rather for jobs to get undertaken satisfactorily without serving see but this is definitely a risky proposition as shown by case of Louis v Sadiq 1996. The case revolved around an end of terrace property in London and even shows the implications of the work on standard homes and thus standard home owners, not necessarily just mass developments. Mr Sadiq (building owner) carried out building work without serving notice beneath the act. This work eventually caused problems for the particular neighbouring property plus he was forced to make good this damage by the court under the particular terms of the particular act. This is usually standard procedure plus even if he previously served the proper notices then he would still have already been liable for this particular cost, but a lot more importantly with precisely what we are discussing, the courts honored additional damages in order to Mr and Mrs Louis (adjoining owner) because it was feeling that Mr Sadiq's failure to observe the act negated any benefits of defence that this individual might gain through the terms of the act and therefore special destroys were allowed. In this case the Louis's have been awarded compensation to protect additional costs suffered through a failing to offer their house as an outcome of the problems and they were even awarded expenses for rising building costs in network with their latest house abroad. Had Mr Sadiq followed the correct procedures and served the proper notices then these kinds of substantial additional charges would not have got been incurred. He or she would only have been liable with regard to the cost associated with putting right the particular damage, not typically the additional costs. This specific example is simply by no means frequent place but truly does go to proven the potential ramifications of not following the correct processes. What appears like the sensible saving in surveyor's fees can turn into the substantial cost regarding damages. You already been cautioned! This brief content is targeted at giving them a layman's watch of the action for information purposes as opposed to a full technical examination. You must seek specialist advice if carrying out any job to, or inside close proximity to neighbouring land or property. It should likewise be noted how the act does not have any having on some other legal guidelines, such as the requirement of planning authorization or building rules approval etc which usually are completely individual entities.

Typically the Party Wall Take action: What's That Most About

You're probably interested in this article since you're gonna hold out a building project, or probably your neighbour is usually. redictable as ever, conservatives are gearing up to defend their increasingly extremist voter base in the wake of the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection by trotting out their timeworn “bloody shirt” trope—you know, the one that “makes a victim out of the bully and a bully out of the victim”—even as government officials try to grapple with the fallout from the manifest reality of a far-right-wing insurgency on our doorsteps. As always, the problem isn’t far-right seditionist violence, the problem is the people calling it out and trying to reel it in.
Right-wing pundits are currently attempting to repeat the travesty of 2009, when conservative media claimed a Department of Homeland Security memo warning of an increase in far-right organizing and recruitment, particularly directed at military veterans, was proof of plans to persecute conservatives. This time, they’re directing the same sort of self-owning complaints at the military’s announced efforts to root out far-right extremists—the kind who would participate in an armed insurrection—from their ranks.
In the aftermath of Jan. 6—and the realization that one in five of the riotous insurgents arrested for their roles in it were military veterans—the Biden administration, led by Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, announced that it would tackle the long-running issue of radicalization within the ranks of the U.S. military, first by ordering a 60-day stand-down in all six branches of the service to attempt to assess how far-reaching the problem really is. Exactly how those orders will play out remains up in the air, but leaders at every military base are currently figuring that out.
However, some conservative pundits are already jumping to sound the alarms over the early iterations of the anti-extremist training being provided to the troops:
At PJ Media, J. Christian Adams hysterically claimed that the Pentagon’s “shocking” new training materials are “targeting conservatives.”
The Family Research Center’s Tony Perkins chimed in with the claim that the program is intended to “drive conservative and Christian members of the military either underground or out of the service altogether.”
The right-wing Washington Examiner asked Pentagon officials if conservatives were being targeted, and obtained a denial—which was then denounced in the same piece by QAnon-loving Colorado Congressman Lauren Boebert as a “political litmus test.”
As researcher Jared Holt observed, Adams’ article “says more about the author than anything else.” Notably, its thesis deliberately erases any line between far-right extremists and mainstream conservatives, saying the military’s materials contained “warped characterizations of fellow citizens who believe in constitutional principles.” It also directly identifies attempts to root out extremist members as “part of a radicalized political agenda.”
At one point, he describes it as a “racialist agenda”:
And if there was any doubt, the presentation makes it clear the armed forces are to be integrated into the Biden administration’s racialist agenda. “If we don’t eliminate extremist behaviors from our Navy, then racism, injustice, indignity and disrespect will grow and keep us from reaching our potential.” The materials do not cite a single instance of racism, injustice, indignity, or disrespect. Those are left to the imagination.
Actually, there is no need to leave anything to the imagination here. Not only was the problem of far-right infiltration into the ranks of the U.S. military a serious and mounting issue well before January 2021—with multiple documented examples of servicemen turning their military training into organizing neo-Nazi terrorism cells, for instance—but several of the arrests made in the Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection itself provide clear illustrations of its manifestation:
One U.S. Army reservist charged in the Capitol siege, Timothy Hale-Cusanelli, was widely known among his colleagues at a New Jersey-based naval facility as a white supremacist, one who openly discussed his hatred of Jews in the workplace, according to federal prosecutors.
Jacob Fracker, 29, was an infantry rifleman in the Marine Corps, according to the Pentagon, who deployed to Afghanistan twice, and served in the Virginia National Guard. He also was a police officer in Rocky Mount, Virginia—until he was fired for his participation in the insurrection.
Air Force veteran Larry Rendall Brock Jr., was wearing a military-style helmet and tactical vest carrying flex cuffs aimed to “take hostages,” prosecutors claim. He posted on Facebook that he was preparing for a "Second Civil War," and in the weeks after Joe Biden's victory, Brock posted that "we are now under occupation by a hostile governing force."
Another insurrectionist arrested for invading the Capitol is a 35-year-old Marine veteran who once was crew chief of the presidential helicopter squadron at the White House named John Daniel Andries.
Overall, one in every five persons arrested for their roles in the Jan. 6 insurrection served in the U.S. military.
Adams also misleads his readers by claiming that the military’s warning in the anti-extremist briefing material—namely: “Speech that incites violence or criminal activity that threatens to undermine our government and Constitution is not protected by the First Amendment”—is “flatly wrong.”
Adams claims that “speech that ‘threatens to undermine our government’ is completely protected by the First Amendment. The Pentagon’s grotesque characterization of the law is borrowed from the criminal codes of dictatorships,” adding that the “whole concept of ‘undermining’ is the flimsy legal standard that sent millions to the Gulags and guillotine.”
He may be correct about this when it comes to ordinary citizens, but the Pentagon materials are directed entirely at serving members of the military, for whom in fact “freedom of speech” is entirely circumscribed, and has been so for most of its existence—with the full support of U.S. courts. Both the Uniform Code of Military Justice (UCMJ) and Defense Department Directives can and do place strict limits on soldiers’ speech. The UCMJ, passed by Congress in 1950, includes such “Punitive Articles” as “Contempt Toward Officials” and “Failure to Obey Order or Regulation,” as well as “Conduct Unbecoming an Officer and a Gentleman.”
Near the end of the piece, Adams lets his transphobic flag fly, complaining that a ban on “liking any material that promotes discrimination based on … gender identity” means that “if you believe in biological sex, you might be involuntarily separated or court-martialed.” He also claims that references to constitutional equal protection for transgender members are “full of legal errors. Again, the Fourteenth Amendment says nothing about biological males who consider themselves to be women, yet the training says otherwise.”
Adams wraps up his screed by assuring military members that “the materials are imaginary bunk. It is a part of a radicalized political agenda to undermine the basic principles of the nation—equality before law regardless of race, and treating people impartially in tribunals or day-to-day affairs.”
Some may recall Adams’ initial foray into national media as a conservative darling in 2010, when as a Bush holdover in the Obama Justice Department, he began claiming that prosecution of a voter-intimidation case against the New Black Panthers Peoples Party was derailed because of anti-white racial discrimination, and resigned in protest. That would-be right-wing scandal fell apart when Adams' claim that the Voting Section didn’t intervene on behalf of white voters was proved conclusively false.
Since then, he’s gone to work for the right-wing Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF), and was appointed to Donald Trump’s ill-fated “election integrity commission,” where he was known to talk about an “alien invasion” at the polls. He created an uproar in 2017 when PILF released a two-part report titled "Alien Invasion" that identified 5,556 voters as non-citizens, on the basis of having their voter registrations cancelled at one point over citizenship concerns—even though fully half the voters who had been called out were currently active voters who had fixed their registrations. More recently, Adams testified before Congress that mail-in voting invited fraud, and that voting-rights restoration represented a power grab by the federal government.
Tony Perkins’ attack on the military is similar in nature, casting the Pentagon’s anti-extremist training as “an excuse to silence speech.” He says “it's only logical to assume their definition [of a hate group] is even broader—including every Bible-believing Christian and conservative.”
Perkins also asserts that the Pentagon’s motives are clear: “to drive conservative and Christian members of the military either underground or out of the service altogether.” He concludes: “The tentacles of religious hostility run deep in this administration. Anyone who doesn't embrace the Left's ‘new morality’ will be a target, including the men and women fighting for the freedom they want to deny us.”
And the Examiner cited Boebert—who not only is a QAnon conspiracy-cult follower, but has been targeted for investigation by her congressional colleagues for her behavior around the insurrection, though the story mentions none of that—as a critic of the Pentagon’s training plans.
“This is nothing but a political litmus test of our brave men & women. It is obscene & dangerous to use soldiers who risk their lives for America as political pawns,” tweeted Boebert, described by the Examiner as “a gun rights advocate.” “We can hardly be surprised by these political litmus tests given Biden’s political vetting of the 26,000 National Guard troops in DC for his inauguration.”
The Capitol arrests provide startling examples of a disturbing trend within the ranks of both enlisted military members as well as veterans—namely, the increasing presence of far-right extremism and ideologies frequently connected to domestic terrorism (and most recently, a mass insurrection). Perhaps its most disturbing aspect is how easily it has grown within those ranks because of a high level of tolerance—if not outright sympathy—for it, both within the broader military culture as well as among the higher-ranking officers responsible for overseeing it.
This extremism runs in a spectrum, from the overtly threatening white supremacists and neo-Nazis who both infiltrate military ranks and are sometimes recruited and radicalized from within them, to the seemingly more temperate “Patriots,” militiamen, and “constitutionalists” whose ideology and rhetoric embrace a surface kind of patriotic jingoism that at its core is violently antidemocratic and seditionist. As we saw on Jan. 6, it can be no less dangerous in terms of the kind of terroristic threat it poses, not just to the public but to the nation’s democratic institutions. All of them pose a potential but real national-security threat.
The role of vigilante groups such as the Oath Keepers, Three Percenters, and Proud Boys in the insurrection also points to a significant gap in the military’s current policy regarding far-right extremists. The wording of the prohibition on such activities in the military focuses primarily on participation in hate groups that discriminate against minorities—such as white-nationalist, neo-Nazi, or skinhead organizations—but does not come close to including the far-right conspiracists of the “Patriot” movement and their antidemocratic activities.
Cassie Miller, an analyst for the Southern Poverty Law Center, noted to Daily Kos that “currently, the military does not ban troops from participating in antigovernment groups and militias.”
“There are regulations that ban members of the military actively participating in groups that discriminate based on ‘race, creed, color, sex, religion, ethnicity or national origin,’ but they are clearly poorly enforced,” Miller said. “Not only are new screening procedures and regulations sorely needed, the military also needs to enforce the regulations it already has.”
Terrorism expert Zakir Gul explained the particular nature of the threat posed by “Patriot”-style extremists for Homeland Security Today:
The number of radicalized individuals within the ranks of the U.S. military may not be known even by Pentagon officials unless the individuals showed some signs of their violent extremist ideology. The number of such individuals, however, is a minor issue for two reasons. First, the ideology is so toxic that a small number of individuals can spread and influence others and quickly turn those small numbers into big numbers. Second, these individuals are highly trained, well-equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to plot violent acts, and have easier access to military vehicles and weaponry than other terrorists. Even a small number of such individuals, therefore, are capable of committing mass killings and causing significant destruction of buildings and infrastructure. In one sense, an individual with these characteristics is like a one-person army.
A good example is Timothy McVeigh, a Gulf War veteran and the recipient of several military-service awards—and the person responsible for bombing a federal building in Oklahoma City in 1995 that left 168 people dead and numerous others wounded and became the deadliest homegrown terrorist attack in U.S. history. For a fictional example, imagine this: An F-35 fighter aircraft pilot who adheres to a violent extremist ideology and is filled hatred of the United States terrorizes, attacks, and kills a massive number of people with that single aircraft. Such a catastrophe would be no different than the tragic 9/11 attacks and their consequences. These highly trained individuals are not and should never be put into the same category of threat assigned to ordinary terrorists.
Left unchecked, such one-person armies could damage the reputation of the most trusted institution in the United States—the U.S. military—for generations and be difficult to rebuild. Some might even find it appropriate to attach fascist label to the U.S. military, hindering its ability to effectively defend one of the world’s leading democracies. It is essential, therefore, that the U.S. military and the federal government work to prevent the actions and consequences of violent extremists and to respond swiftly should any of these groups breach the military’s carefully crafted preventive measures.
As former Marine Corps Commandant James L. Jones wrote in The Atlantic:
States armed services and their counterparts in allied countries must close off all means by which white supremacists, anarchists, or fascists enter our national institutions and social mainstreams. The members of the U.S. armed forces have an obligation to defend our nation from all enemies, “foreign and domestic”—including those who would divide us from within.
Retired U.S. Army Colonel Jeff McCausland, in a piece for NBC News, noted that the lack of attentiveness to the problem has originated at the top and filtered down. In 2018, for example, the Defense Department found only 18 members of the 1.8 million Americans serving had been disciplined or discharged in the previous five years for engaging in extremist activities—and then used those low figures to justify deprioritizing it.
But there is no internal law enforcement task force monitoring extremist networks or generating comprehensive data within the military at all, and sharing of intelligence on such groups across federal agencies is extremely limited. A former Defense investigator described the U.S. government’s lack of a concerted effort to gather intelligence on extremist groups as a black hole. Another observed: “Every year they get a report based on what they were never looking for.”
Daryl Johnson, a former DHS analyst who authored the 2009 bulletin, told USA Today that conservative attacks back then created a missed opportunity to raise awareness about radical white supremacist groups looking to recruit within the military culture.
“For one of the few times in recent American history, we had accurately predicted a threat, given ample warning and people just ended up bickering and fighting about it and the message got lost,” Johnson said. “We’ve suffered the consequences of that.”

If you happen to know, why is shixiong the term used rather than shige? From the way I've seen -ge used, it seemed to be the more direct counterpart to -di, -jie, and -mei, so when I started thinking about the component parts of the titles, I got curious about this.
Tumblr media
(going to put these two asks together because they’re both about sibling terms)
哥 ge / brother
OKAY so this is actually a super interesting question -- anon, you’re onto something! 兄 xiong is used to mean “elder brother” in vaguely archaic/literary contexts, and comes down to modern Mandarin today in the four-character phrase 兄弟姐妹 xiongdijiemei (‘siblings,’ literally: elder brother, younger brother, older sister, younger sister). We see this throughout CQL in 师兄 shixiong / elder school-brother and 兄 xiongzhang / elder brother (Lan Wangji’s usual form of address to Lan Xichen).
So it turns out, the character 哥 ge is a 通假字/phonetically interchangeable character for 歌 ge / ‘song;’ that is, before they invented the character that we now read as 歌 ge / ‘song,’ 哥 ge was used in that semantic context.
As far as I can tell, 哥 ge wasn’t used to mean ‘older brother’ until circa the Song Dynasty; the entry for this character in the 《广韵》Guangyun, an 11th century dictionary of rhymes has this:
哥:古作歌字今呼爲兄也。
ge [‘elder brother’], in ancient times was used as ge [song]; today it the term used to call one’s xiong / elder brother.
Side note: rhyming dictionaries are actually super helpful in historical linguistics because it tracks the change in the pronunciation of various words throughout different eras! Pronunciation shifts along with everything else over the course of centuries, and there’s a small but dedicated group of historical linguists who are out to try and reconstruct Warring States-era pronunciation (it’s wild; there are no tones, and it sounds more like Russian than modern Mandarin).
What a cool question, anon!
姐 jie,阿姐 a-jie,姐姐 jiejie
It doesn’t surprise me that subtitlers might elect to go by a character’s name rather than their sibling address; in English, we call people by their names rather than by their relationship to us, but in Chinese... well, we just had a bunch of conversations about names and personal names -- names are tied up with all sorts of intimacies and implications (which make for delicious interpersonal nuance and dynamics) that they aren’t in English.
In terms of tonal differences... whew, I’m going to give it my best shot but I’ll probably be off. 姐姐 jiejie, for me, feels a little more juvenile (I touched on this briefly in this post, albeit with similar levels of uncertainty). 阿姐 a-jie, I think, would be equally informal but less juvenile (the prefix 啊 a- gets attached to names as well as a term of endearment, so it’s definitely got a load of informality just thanks to its intimacy). That leaves 姐 jie as the most formal, which feels misleading because it sounds pretty informal to my ear (again, native speakers, weigh in!). I think you can bump it up to a more formal register if you attach it to a name, but I wouldn’t cite myself on a scholarly article about that.
Hope that helps!

The Doll Factory

I felt that this book, while perhaps not exceptional, was very well put together. It was paced just right and the sense of growing dread escalates in a way which kept me glued to the page. Truly well written historical fiction.
Heaven and Hell: A History of the Afterlife
Author: Bart D. Ehrman

I am rather conflicted about this book. Firstly, as a Christian bordering on agnosticism (I have never been a part of any church and my family is completely atheistic), I felt both somehow comforted by Ehrman´s deductions and somewhat resentful at the same time. Not because he very convincingly talks about the changing of religious perspectives (I am a historian myself so that information was only natural), but because he is clearly working with the notion of non-existence of God, not really treating it as a possibility. That, however, is my own personal issue. Objectively speaking, this is a very good book. Though academic in tone, it reads quite easily and is obviously well researched. The title, however, is misleading. Like many others, I had expected this to be a study of VARIOUS theories of afterlives, but 80% of the book is focused on early Christianity only. Not that isn´t fascinating, but for people hoping to learn something about other religions and cultures and their post-mortem ideas, it can only represent a big disappointment. So - know what you are getting, have an open mind and you might find this book a worthy addition to your personal library.

This was sort of OK I guess??? The beginning was promising, but I lost interest in the latter half, which also became somewhat convoluted. Not very memorable, though Sophia Tobin´s writing style is fine. I would not mind trying another book by her in the future.
The Mercies

Stunningly-written and deeply moving, this book has really only one weakness. It somewhat drags in the middle. But the atmosphere is alive and palpable and the emotions pure and real. There are many other books dealing with the topic of witch-trials, but few manage to be as powerful as well as respectfully restrained. Hargrave as an author knows how to keep the balance and her book beautiful.
The Wizard of Oz and Other Wonderful Books of Oz: The Emerald City of Oz and Glinda of Oz
Author: Frank L. Baum

This book is not commonly known in my country and so I have only read it for the first time now when I am over thirty. It definitely has its charm, especially the first volume, which holds some beautiful truths one wishes to teach the children (or adults). The Emerald City of Oz and Glinda of Oz are both mostly just a flight of fancy with no actual conflict. In fact, the danger to any of the characters is so nonexistent it begs the question of "why should I care". Not bad, but perhaps I would have loved it more if I was 5, not 33. Mea culpa.

This book felt like an acid trip with Umberto Eco or something in a similar vein to me. I was rather terrified that the whole thing would be completely dependant on the unusual format, but to my delight, the format merely enhances and enriches the actual novel, which in itself is dark, confusing, moving, terrifying, philosophical and weirdly fascinating. I am sure a lot has escaped my attention or flew over my head, but I welcome it because it gives me more reason to return to the book in the future. It was not all flawless though. My biggest gripe, as an actual Czech person, is that even though so much effort and thought went into the creation of this book, the author decided that Google translate will do just fine - and no surprise - it did not. There are not many instances of the Czech language being used, but when it is... it is all wrong. The Czech language is quite difficult and complex and Google translate does not know how to deal with it most of the time. Just one example: In the book, Eric writes OPICE TANCE on the wall and says it is Czech for "MONKEY DANCES". Yeah. Yeah, it is. IF THE WORD "DANCES" IS TAKEN AS A NOUN IN PLURAL. The correct translation would be "OPICE TANČÍ" and trust me it IS a big big difference. (Do not get me started on the vintage newspaper article....) You definitely need a lot of brainpower and focus when reading, this is not an easy book to follow. You also need to accept that not all questions are answered. I am glad I read it though. I found it an interesting experience.

The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family and Defiance During the Blitz
Author: Erik Larson
First published: 2020
Pages: 608
Rating: ★★★★☆
How long did it take: 2 days
An excellent and above all readable account of a chapter in the WW2 history. Larson explains well why Churchill was the best man for that dark hour and why he is still viewed as a hero in Europe (his questionable and even abhorrent views and actions in the context of the British Empire and people of other races notwithstanding), as the person who stood up to Hitler and pretty much kept the fires of defiance burning. There is definitely not enough "family" in this "family saga", but given the sheer amount of material and information presented to the reader, I suppose the author struck an acceptable balance between the politics and the private matters.
Conjure Women
Author: Afia Atakora

How long did it take: 8 days
The beginning of this book seemed tiring, and at risk of sounding insensitive, not interesting, since it seemed to tackle the same things that have already been tackled. But then there appeared strands of stories and of secrets, and suddenly I just needed to know everything. The whole story then appears as an artful mosaic. The last chapter felt unnecessary though and I did not understand its meaning if it was supposed to have any.

COVID-19 Reading Log, part 3
Parts One and Two
Tumblr media
16. An Astounding Atlas of Altered States by Michael J. Trinklein. I’ve actually read this book before but hadn’t realized it until I got started—its first edition was titled simply Lost States. It’s a coffee table book. Each double page spread has one map depicting the proposed or presumed boundaries of a piece of territory that never became a US state, and the other page is information on the history of that non-state. Most of them fall into three categories—attempts to carve up Western territories that didn’t make it (for values of the west as far east as the Appalachian Mountains, because some of these are from the 1700s), splits to existing states due to interstate politics, or overseas territories, either those actually owned by the USA (Puerto Rico, the Marshall Islands) or not (Greenland, Newfoundland). I would be just as interested, if not more so, in a more in depth approach to the subject (maybe focusing on a smaller number of candidates).
Tumblr media
17. Written in Bones edited by Paul Bahn. This is a primer to forensic archaeology, in the form of a number of short articles about a variety of sites involving human remains. This is the first book I’ve read so far I would consider genuinely bad. Here’s why: a number of controversial topics are covered, but poorly (I will share some of these claims in parentheticals—note that these are not my claims, but the book’s). The coverage runs from being dismissive of the controversy (e.g. the butchered remains found among Anasazi dwellings are absolutely not evidence of cannibalism, and anyone who claims otherwise is ignorant) to ignoring the existence of any controversy at all (e.g. Kennewick Man is definitely not related to modern Native American groups and syphilis definitely existed in Europe before the Columbian Exchange). It claims that two skeletons found in the Tower of London, which haven’t been scientifically examined since the 1930s, are almost certainly the lost sons of Edward IV, supposedly murdered by Richard III. On top of that, several articles use outdated and super-racist terminology, like splitting human populations into “Negroid”, “Caucasoid” and “Mongoloid”. And these are just things that I noticed, and I’m by no means an expert. What else could this book be misleading about, or what outright lies is it telling? Skip this one.
Tumblr media
18. Fantastic Archaeology by Stephen Williams. This book was chosen in part with the intention of washing the bad taste of Written in Bones out of my mouth, which it succeeded in doing. The focus of the book is on pseudoscientific takes on the archaeology of pre-contact Native Americans and various claims for pre-Columbian European expeditions to North America. The Kensington Rune Stone, Prince Madoc and various Lost Tribes related forgeries are taken to task here. The author is clearly an expert, both on the actual archeology and on the frauds, cranks and rogue professors (the author’s coinage) that appear. The final chapter is a lengthy survey of the state of the art knowledge of what actual pre-Columbian North American cultures were like, based on the evidence when the book was written (early 1990s).
Tumblr media
19. Dinosaur Facts and Figures: The Theropods and Other Dinosauriformes by Rubén Molina-Pérez and Asier Larramendi. This book is right on the borderland between being a popular and technical volume. It’s mostly data—lengths of dinosaurs, drawings of bones, footprints and eggs, estimates for weights and speeds—but it’s sold at popular literature prices (aka reasonable for a 250 page book with color illustrations). The focus is on the largest and smallest theropods, sorted first by clade, and then chronologically. The real selling points here are the thoroughness and the art. Unusually for anything approaching the popular sphere, dinosaurs discussed in depth include animals not formally described, ichnotaxa and ootaxa (that’s names based on footprints and eggs, respectively), and various nomen dubia (specimens with doubtful or useless names attached). Some of the animals in the book are getting full life reconstructions in print for the first time, and there’s definitely species and specimens I’d never heard of throughout. The book is translated from Spanish, and there are a few places where the translation is awkward or missed a word or two. It’s the first in a three part series—the book on sauropods and their relatives releases later this year, and I am looking forward to it.
Tumblr media
20. Lost Feast by Lenore Newman. The book is on the subject of culinary extinction, the loss of species or cultivars eaten by humans. The author is a food researcher and the book straddles the line between cultural history and ecology. Some of the losses are from overharvesting (e.g. passenger pigeons and fisheries), some are from market forces (e.g. the reduction of plant cultivars) and others are from a combination of factors, not fully understood (like colony collapse disorder). The titular feast is a series of dinner parties held throughout the book in honor of losses and featuring near misses (pear cultivars are a running theme). This book is also a milestone for this particular project—this is my last (physical) library book! All of the libraries in my area are closed due to quarantine.

THE KITCHEN FOOTPRINT
Shall we start with the space available for you for the kitchen. Irrespective of whether you are designing for any new home, or simply remodeling in an old one, you are tied to how much space available in which to create ones dream. If the house is fairly small, it is advisable to consider whether or not you may have the option of increasing. You may be able to make this happen in your existing your home and, in a completely new home, very often you've kept time to alter that architectural plan, in the event that needed. In either case, if you possibly could eliminate or move a wall and walls or boost the house to create even more space for the your kitchen's, it will improve the performance and value in the room significantly.
Naturally, if you don't create some sort of addition to the home, and just remove and also relocate a wall(s), you then have infringed upon a contiguous space and lower its size, so that you have to weigh that option is the best in your case. Is it worth letting go the other space to enhance the size of the kitchen? If you ask me, if you can do minus the adjoining space, it happens to be much better to expend that extra space or room to the kitchen.
Whenever you plan to remove or even relocate a wall(s), the key factor to decide is, by which means doing, will you go through a load-bearing position? This occurs as soon as wall(s) is organ of the support system with the structure of the house. Commonly a contractor might determine this. In the event the contractor is unsure, you will need to have a structural engineer examine this structure to make that will determination. If it is neo load-bearing, when you are happy to start construction, your contractor can begin build out the actual per the new system. If it is a load-bearing issue, your local constructing authority will require that you really retain a structural engineer or a architect to design some sort of structural solution designed for removing or shifting the wall(s).
This individual will submit pattern drawings and data of the solution, with the building authority with regard to approval and permit. At receiving the make it possible for, when you are ready to begin the process of construction, the designer and installer can then proceed to build-out the structure each and every the engineer's or simply architect's specifications. It is a process in Ca, based upon the state creating standards, Title per day. The process in the various states is very very much the same.
In any case, once you have determined of whether or not to help you expand or re-configure, you will know the configuration (footprint) of the breathing space that you have available by a horizontal standpoint -- Plan View.
STRAIGHT SPACE
You should also consider precisely what size and shape the room can be from a vertical viewpoint as well. If it is likely to increase the level of the room just by raising, eliminating and altering an existing poor ceiling or soffit, you should seriously consider using this option. The additional position will provide more wooden box storage from the enhanced height of selection cabinets and the living room will become more voluminous which is always much more visually impressive and additionally comfortable. From a engineering standpoint, the load-bearing issues will connect with increasing the room peak just as it relates to moving or removing walls.
Of course, in working with all of these design in addition to construction issues along with decisions that need to become made, you will not come to be alone. Your developer will be the pivotal one that will help you evaluate the possibilities you have available. He or she could produce drawings so that they can visually demonstrate those options and will give advice on which selections are best together with why.
I understand that all sounds extremely tedious and bothersome. In some sense both of these words are a fantastic description of the design/construction process. However , everything that I have outlined on top of is done thousands of moments every day and most of people homeowners have live through and, as a result, depend on the new, beautiful, well-designed, kitchen of their objectives. You notice I talked about "most"! Seriously, a project will be complicated and there will be certain problems. This is basically the nature of type and construction and that's why you should not shift without experienced specialist throughout the process through the very beginning to the stop.
UTILIZING YOUR YOUR KITCHEN'S
Are you an expert cocinero, who does it all: cooking food, baking, barbecuing, and also are you a minimal cook dinner whose main goal should be to just get a food on the table for the home as expeditiously as is feasible, or are you anywhere you want in between? Do you consistently cook by yourself or even do you often have friends and family help with the creating meals? Do you often show your and all amount into the kitchen whereas munching on your Brie between sips with chardonnay? Do you cook often and wish a marble spot for that purpose? Your questions can do not delay - on.
Some shoppers have large, renowned, homes and enliven frequently and/or get large families. They will have someone undertake the cooking for your children. Some of these types of initiatives may need the full treatment method, such as a butler's kitchen or walk-in kitchen, two islands, a couple refrigerators, two dishwashers, two microwave stoves, a wine cooler, some other beverage cooler, some built-in espresso machines, sink, prep-sink and additionally bar sink in addition to glass-door cabinets to show the family heirloom the far east, etc .
Most people require something drastically less than all of this, although I bring it upwards just to emphasize which how you utilize ones own kitchen has a tough influence on the style and design and therefore, as I talked about, you should think about how you will want to operate along with what you want to accommodate in the kitchen. You can start considering what type of appliances together with features you would like. Imagine the three key work areas of your kitchen: Food Prepare (refrigerator and sink), Cooking (cook top notch, oven and microwave) and Cleanup (sink, dishwasher and recycling). You will find a myriad of designs and options available for you to and your designer will probably need to carefully consider. A lot more planning, of course!
THE SIMPLEST WAY & WHERE YOU CAN EXPECT TO EAT
You may love to be able to eat with the kitchen by having an tropical island with seating. How big the island that room will fit will determine how many you can seat. Seats at an tropical isle reduces the hard drive space usage available in the is, so the balance with the kitchen storage must absorb this decrease. You can basically sit down at three circumvent heights: chair top (29-30"), counter level (36") and standard height (42").
Should you have an adjacent dinner room, you may want to take there in the curiosity of having more storage devices in the island. If ever the room will provide it, you may much like the idea of a built-in booth in the breakfast time room or house, in lieu of a typical family table and chairs. Various clients like to have the choice of eating with both the breakfast location and at the of the islands in the kitchen. You might find there is no breakfast room in your home and the dining room functions as both lunchtime room and kitchen curtains. In any case, you should make these and other opportunities careful consideration.
THE DESIGN FASHION
There are many design motifs available to you: Traditional, Present day, Contemporary, Country, Craftsman, Cape Cod, and so on The design motif you select will definitely heavily influence selecting all of the other parts in the kitchen. A cabinet style and additionally finish have the most profitable influence on the model style of the kitchen. When i mentioned, you can start as a result of collecting magazine images of kitchens to obtain a feel for what we do and don't just like. They will give you superb ideas for all important things kitchen. Stock, semi-custom or custom shelves have many different versions and finishes to provide and of course, custom boxes can provide any pattern and finish.
KEEPING ISSUES
The planning operation will continue right up until every aspect of the whole kitchen design is normally selected and stated. However , once you have organized your footprint in addition to vertical space, how i want to utilize a kitchen, how along with where you want to feed on, and your design design, you are more than half manner there. The planning approach continues, on a small scale, as you are helping to make more decisions around all of the items together with issues that make up earnings kitchen design.
Types: Do you often create spaghetti and pasta, which requires sealing a large pot along with about four to six quarts of water? If you have, you should have a pot-filler over the cook major or range prime. Since there are simply two of you and it ingests a long time to clog the dishwasher which causes the area wash the dishes, you should think about a two cabinet dishwasher which lets you wash one bathroom drawer at a time, thereby conserving energy and to provide clean dishes again. Do you prefer a great air switch within the countertop for the garbage disposal or do you want that switch to be over the backsplash? Do you want a good garbage disposal inside the prep sink and also the main sink? Are you wanting soft close within your cabinet drawers? Would you like the idea of au cours de lighting above this island? Do you want some sort of filtered water method? The questions just on!
The various lists you will be encountering within designing your new your kitchen are as follows. This approach listing of categories can provide an idea of what exactly is to come. I decided not to say it was painless!

3 Ways Junk News Spreads
Junk news is content that is brought to viewers’s attention by prioritizing certain content that may not be the factual and the true story. According to The Oxford Blog, “Three Reasons Junk News Spreads so Quickly Across Social Media”, the major reasons junk news is spreading is by algorithms, Advertising, and Exposure.
Algorithms
Algorithms spread junk news by using a certain code to present a certain type of information that will cause some sort of interaction from the viewer. A great example of this can be Facebook and my own personal experience has occurred from TikTok. Facebook is not what I personally use on an every day basis, but when I do hop on the app it loads content that many of my friends have shared, which have recently been about politics or news articles that can spread false information. My personal experience has been through TikTok. This app allows for people to create content for other people to view or to keep privately for themselves. I have scrolled through feed that is relevantly the same. I would then ask my close friends if they have the same type of content but their content seems to be what they view the longest, like the most, or share the most. One creator that I viewed tried a test in two different outfits but with the same audio and video quality, but one had many more views than the other one did. Algorithms are a way to get certain content into the lives of others based on view time, content sharing, or what the app thinks that you would be interested in the most.
Advertising
Advertising is one of the most common uses of spreading junk news. I believe this because it is very common for creators to get views on their content. The content can be very misleading and can even leave the viewer with regret or wasted time. The most abundant use of this method is on YouTube. Many creators title their video captions with “There is no way this happened” or “I Really Met A Celebrity” or some other eye catching description. The creators also want eye catching graphics to get the viewer to click on their video. Using this method can spread junk news because many individuals may watch the whole video waiting on one thing to happen but that “thing” never actually happens.
Tumblr media
Exposure
The previous apps that I have mentioned also tie into this category of junk news. The website mentions being exposed to political views of only your party and not viewing the opposite sides’s content, making it unlikely to change parties or take in a view other than your own. Facebook is huge in the idea of exposure, because it loads content that you are most likely aligned with or have the same view. I have experienced this with TikTok as well. TikTok exposes young girls to mature content without even realizing it. It can force individuals to try and act or look a certain way because they are being exposed to the same ideas over and over. I have even experienced the idea of feeling belittled by some ideas on the app and cannot imagine how some other viewers feel as well.
How To Be Aware
Individuals and businesses should take precaution on the content being posted or avoid spending too much time reading into news articles that may sound dramatized. Individuals can respond by opening up their mind to different ideas and try not to believe everything that they read on the internet.

You Can’t Stop Nike Using Skateboarding Like a Marketing Mall Grab
The recent release of a new Nike video in which a series of sporting images are edited into montages with elite athletes has caused quite a stir. We see a bricolage of identities, politics, and triumphs melded together. Many people are lauding the innovative editing techniques, and the inspirational message of the video. Others have created their own juxtaposition by highlighting the way that Nike has been using Uighur labour at Chinese factories for their own products. However, one image that strikes out is a Muslim woman skateboarder in a Niqab sutured on to Leo Baker skateboarding with a LGBTQ flag. The video gives the impression of a transformation in which the veiled woman progresses across the screen turning into Leo Baker. As this image hits the screen the voice over declares…
“And if we don’t fit the sport, we’ll change it”
Part of the ire surrounding this edit is the concern that there is a supposed connection, a pending trajectory between conservative religious dress and liberated sexual identities. Some have criticised that this is a misleading marriage, in which the interests of the two groups are not aligned, or even unproblematically juxtaposed. Similarly, the visual cue of transformation has made some suggest that this is a tacit wish of Nike, that it can liberate Muslim women and co-opt them into a consumptive catchall ‘Just Do It’ Nike utopia.
To be clear, I think this edit was misplaced and not thought through, but it seems quite evident that the intention was to critique skateboarding more than Islamic dress and values. The voice over points directly to the fact that some identities have not been historically welcome in skateboarding. This is true.
Nike are naively actually scratching the surface of a bigger issue. This issue is the way in which religion is dismissed from skateboarding. In recent years a vast amount of progress has taken place with women skateboarders becoming more visible, marketable, and powerful in the skateboard industry. Similarly skateboarding has started to shed its homophobic past and enthusiastically embrace the full spectrum of sexualities and gender identities. Even Thrasher ran an article earlier this year title ‘The Top 10 Women & Non-Binary Skaters of 2019.’ Yet, skateboarding and religion remain a somewhat taboo topic.
I do have sympathy for those that critique the advert as I feel the Nike is being somewhat callow in its choice of identities. They are pandering to orientalist notions of an oppressed Muslim woman. It would have been braver to include the skateboarding monk, Shaun Hover (an evangelical Christian skateboarder), or a skatepark bible group (yes they do exist). My research on skateboarding and religion reinforced the notion time and time again that religion was for many involved in skateboarding, a taboo subject. In many cases I spoke to Muslim skateboarders in Malaysia and Indonesia. Their experiences were vastly different to Christian skateboarders in the USA. My investigations revealed a stigma associated with religious affiliation, particularly Christianity and skateboarding. As a result, a subculture of evangelical skateboarders exist who are largely ostracised by the broader skateboarding culture. Let me emphasise, these are the sorts of skateboarders that would not receive Nike endorsement because, despite their abilities, a Christian identity is not a marketable asset in skateboarding. Christian skateboarders are essentially told to lose God in order to get sponsored.
So, I also welcome the critique of this new Nike advert. But I feel that an over-reliance on visual cues actually damages Nike’s message. These issues are trivialised by superficial celebration and end up reducing complex identities and political movements to marketing fodder. I take particularly issue with the insincerity of including a reference to skateboarding and religion. Yet the issue of Nike and Uyghur workers is particularly potent. How do these stories keep appearing? In truth Chinese factories are adept at conforming to a host of international standards. As soon as an inspection is announced factories are able to present an image that conforms to the international standard being assessed. Those doing the assessment are often aware of this duplicity, but they work to assess what is presented to them. In this way massive corporations are able to tick the box that they are doing all that is demanded of them and need not delve further. This is a beautiful metaphor for the Nike advert itself which is solely an act, a presentation of a set of images that they perceive to be most acceptable to the ideas and values of their consumers.

Junk News Across Social Media
Algorithms being used on social media create an unwanted bias in the social media world. Online algorithms work against the ideals of free information because it sorts and chooses the results for us. We should have the ability to sift through what we want to see rather than the internet making choices for us on what the algorithms think will get the most interaction from us. By algorithms making decisions for humans it limits what is spread across social media and can be biased toward political affiliations or controversial topics which in no way have to be true. This link talks about how algorithms uses emotionally fueled news to get a reaction out of users, rather than providing solid factual information. Users have to take it upon themselves to do additional research to understand and decipher true and false information that they see on social media.
https://impakter.com/fake-news-go-viral/
Advertising is another way that social media users are being targeted in a deceiving way. Advertising often use controversial topics as click bait to get users to interact things that enrage them. Advertising has in some ways shifted from targeting things users are interested in to using their emotions to engage for long periods of time. The content is many times controversial and bias. These advertisements can be misleading and many time the advertisement sponsors hide behind the clickbait title. Manipulation of social media users have become the name of the game for big time corporations. Social media platforms use your information and sell them to companies so that they can target you. This article explains the technique these companies are using when it comes to click-bait.
https://econsultancy.com/dirty-secrets-clickbait/
Selective exposure is also a major contributor to online bias. Especially when it comes to political affiliations exposure lends itself to bias. Through algorithms and advertisements political campaigns suffocate social media users with one sided information. This information is bombarded at users without any fact-checking or chances to see the other side. This is dangerous for the state of the American democracy because it degrades the nature of how our system works. Selective exposure can lead to a close minded population and hate-fueled voting which is started by these political campaigns. Users have to find multiple sources for their information and realized social media news is many times very skewed and focused on attacking users beliefs.

Make his Mark
Title: Make his Mark Collaborator: @27dragons & @tisfan Link: AO3 Square Filled: O4 - Marking Ship: Bucky/Tony Rating: E Major Tags: Sex, Anal Sex, Semi-public Sex, Marking, not your father’s coffee shop AU Summary: When the tabloids report that Tony Stark and Bucky Barnes’ marriage is going to end in divorce any day now, the queue starts forming to ”comfort” Tony. Bucky wants to make sure everyone knows that Tony is his.
Everyone. Word Count: 2,880 Created for @mcukinkbingo
A/N: We would apologize for hijacking the People Magazine meme, but we’re not actually sorry. Also, this story takes place in the Communal Kitchen AU, somewhat after Long Winter, but you don’t need to know anything about it, except that Bucky and Tony are married.
Everything below the readmore, for smut
There was nothing finer than looking up at Tony, straddling Bucky’s thighs, glistening with sweat, each muscle outlined with golden candlelight, as Bucky very slowly pushed up into that heat. They had the penthouse to themselves, all the kids were gone, and half of the Avengers with them. With relative privacy and the assurance of no interruptions, Bucky had taken his husband to bed, with the intentions of staying there for most of the evening.
Tony raised up, then rolled his hips as he sank back down, shuddering with the sensation. He put his hands on Bucky’s shoulders to change the angle and rocked again, humming with the shifting position. “Article in today’s People says you’re not in love with me anymore,” he mentioned.
Bucky choked and spluttered, then groaned as that changed the way they were fitting together. “Tony, I am literally balls deep in your ass right now,” he pointed out. He flexed his hips, fingers gripping Tony’s thighs. He clenched his jaw in an effort not to spill over right away; his dick often seemed to have an urge to make a point, somehow.
“Mm, yeah, I noticed that.” Tony dug his toes into the mattress for balance and pushed back onto Bucky’s cock even harder than before. “But do you still like me?”
Bucky slid an arm around Tony’s back and before he could protest, rolled them over until he was on top, sliding even deeper with each thrust, as if he could permanently become one with his husband. He leaned in, until his mouth was hovering mere millimeters away from Tony’s. Until speaking brushed their lips together. “I am so into you, baby,” Bucky said, “that nothin’ gonna pull me out.” He demonstrated, by way of pushing Tony’s knees back until they were practically touching his ears.
Tony’s breath caught and his hands clenched in the sheets. “Glad to h-hear it,” he groaned. “Oh, Christ, yes, right there, more.”
“Yeah,” Bucky agreed, rocking with him, stroking Tony with each heartbeat, kissing him thoroughly. He was going to come quicker; driving down into Tony’s lithe, beautiful body always drove him wild. “You know I love you.” He balanced on the metal arm, getting a hand between them to tease Tony’s dick. “Don’t you?”
“Course I do,” Tony panted. “‘M just sayin, the press is at us again. And you know-- oh! Oh, yeah, sweetheart, just like that -- you know what it means when that happens.”
Bucky almost snarled; settled for purring in Tony’s ear, instead. “Means some stupid, mislead idiots with delusions of adequacy are gonna come crawlin’ out of the woodwork, hopin’ for a bite of Tony Stark.” He nipped at Tony’s throat, down to worry at Tony’s collarbone, sucking up a red mark. He ran his thumb back and forth over the crown of Tony’s cock, smearing precome around.
“God, it should not be so hot when you get possessive,” Tony swore. “You know I don’t want anyone else, baby.”
“I know,” Bucky said, and he did, he knew that. Tony had never even had to prove himself to Bucky; they’d held each other’s lives and hearts and heads since they practically met. He didn’t have doubts. “Jus’ don’t like ‘em circling around you like blowflies. You’re not someone’s prize.” He sucked in a breath, thrust in, and twisted his wrist at the same time. “You’re mine.”
Tony threw his head back on a cry and came, spilling over Bucky’s fist to splash across his stomach. “Yours,” he gasped. “Always.” He reached up to curl his fingers into Bucky’s hair. “And you’re mine. Moy soldat.”
Bucky arched, that squeeze and heat, so perfect… he gasped for air, everything clenching down, and then-- “Oh, god.” Deep and molten and shivering, Bucky let it go, pleasure zipping from nerve to nerve as he came, crying Tony’s name. He chased after his breath for a bit, heart throbbing painfully in his chest, practically squashing Tony while he recovered his wits.
“Do I like you,” Bucky said, rolling over and spreading out over as much of the bed as he could get, trying to cool down. “What idiocy. Of course I like you. Like you, love you, want you, need you. Everything. All of it. There aren’t even words.”
Tony sighed in satisfaction. “We might have to put on a show for the press again,” he said. “Since it seems to be a slow news week.”
Bucky rolled up onto his elbow. “What a hardship.”
Really, as Tony got older, you’d think the number of people trying to hit on him would decrease. Sure, he was pretty fit for his age, still a billionaire, still a celebrity superhero, and there were always going to be people who found that attractive; Tony had long since resigned himself to the occasional offer from a fan with little to lose. But since the latest round of the gossip rags proclaiming that Tony and Bucky were going to call it quits Any Day Now, it seemed every third person he met was trying to get into his pants.
Bucky hadn’t even left Tony’s side for five minutes at the last event they’d been at before some society darling had pressed up against Tony’s side and offered to help him through those lonely nights.
Honestly, the woman was lucky that Bucky had only flayed her with words on his return; Tony was pretty certain he’d been mentally doing much worse.
Tony didn’t know where the gossip sites got their speculation from. It’s not like they’d stopped being affectionate with each other -- the kids were forever complaining about it, actually. Which only made them do it more, because it was funny. But apparently, that was too subtle. They were going to have to take things a little bit farther to get the message across.
Bucky, who normally contained himself to shooting at bad guys, and the occasional knife fight when one got too close, switched it up a bit and picked up one of the Not-Quite-Doombots (Tony didn’t know what they were, but they weren’t Doom’s robots, those things were dangerous, these were more like knock-off, dollar store bots. Annoying, clunky, and prone to malfunctions. The Avengers were only called in because there were so many of them) and threw it.
The ‘bot crashed into a nearby coffee shop and sent patrons screaming away. The way Bucky glared at the shop, without paying the least bit attention to the scrap metal he’d just failed to recycle, made Tony wonder if the collateral damage was a little more directed than usual.
But that was the last one. Nothing was still standing that wasn’t wearing signature colors (and the bystanders, who were by-fleers). Bucky took two running steps, hit a park bench, and leaped, getting an arm around Tony and practically tackling him to the ground. It was a good thing Tony had all sorts of shock resistance built into the armor. As it was, the fall jolted his breath out of him and Bucky thumbed the helmet’s release and was kissing him before Tony could recover his air.
“Mph--” Tony tried to say, then gave up and kissed his husband. It was shorter than usual, because air was a thing, and Tony hadn’t started out with a full breath. “Fighting knockoff Doombots gets you hot and bothered now?” he teased.
“No,” Bucky said. He nuzzled at Tony’s jaw. “College girls daring each other to flash Iron Man when he flew by kinda pisses me off, though. That one in th’ blue shirt left her damn brassiere on the table.”
Tony rolled his eyes. “No subtlety at all,” he complained. “Think it’s time to do something about this mess?”
“Mmmm,” Bucky said. He rolled to his feet and offered Tony a hand up. Steve was squawking over comms about the cleanup. Bucky made a face, tugged his earpiece out and threw it over his shoulder. “Fight fire with fire.” He lifted Tony up, armor and all, kissed him again, like they were in some sort of romcom and the wreckage of the street was a field of flowers.
Tony returned the kiss, with interest. “Have I mentioned before how hot it is that you can manhandle me in the suit?” He grinned down at his husband.
“You an’ the suit don’t even weigh what Thor does,” Bucky said. At Tony’s dubious look, Bucky added, “we did ‘get help’ last fight. It was fun.” He turned and carried Tony right back to the coffee shop, which was abandoned and ruined. Bucky took particular pains to step on the lacy bralette laying, forgotten, on the floor. He pushed into the back office, depositing Tony on the desk and swept it clear of rubble.
“Really?” Tony asked. “This is your choice of location?” He didn’t waste any time unfolding himself from the suit. He glanced up at the security camera in the corner and shot it with an EMP blast. There was a limit to how much evidence he wanted the press to get their hands on.
“Smells better than a broom cupboard,” Bucky said with a shrug. “An’ if someone’s gettin’ naked about you in a coffee shop, it’s gonna be me.” He worked open his armor one handed. “Gonna be a quickie. Once I’m outta this shit, I don’t like t’ put it back on until it’s clean.” He licked his way into Tony’s mouth, one hand sliding down the underflight suit until he reached Tony’s hip. “But I’ll make you feel real good, baby.”
“Promises, promises,” Tony taunted, groping down the front of Bucky’s armor and generally interfering with Bucky’s attempt to get it opened, until he got his hand on Bucky’s cock. “Already hard for it? You sure it wasn’t the ‘bots?” Tony grinned impishly until Bucky growled and leaned in to kiss the smirk off his face.
“Maybe a little bit th’ ‘bots,” Bucky said. “It’s nice t’ cut loose an’ not worry about hurtin’ people.” He groaned, pushing against Tony’s hand. “Gonna be even quicker than a quickie if you keep doin’ that.”
Tony was pretty sure Bucky would be able to manage a second round if he did shoot off quick, but it was also a pretty good bet that Steve or someone else would come looking for them if they were missing too long, so they probably didn’t have time for two rounds.
Tony wasn’t completely hard yet -- he wasn’t as fast on the draw as Bucky -- but the warm press of Bucky’s body and the firm stroke of Bucky’s hand as it slipped into the suit was getting him there pretty easily. “RPF,” he murmured. “Coffee shop AU.”
“Look at you, baby,” Bucky crooned. “Love it when you’re all sweaty ‘n dishevelled.” He rubbed Tony’s shaft with the heel of his hand, fingers teasing at his balls while he taunted Tony with more kisses, his tongue flicking over Tony’s lips in quick, heated strokes.
Tony groaned and tipped his head back, tugging Bucky’s mouth toward his throat. “Oh, yeah, yes, Bucky...”
Bucky fastened his mouth on Tony’s throat, a sharp nip and flare of pain as Bucky sucked all the blood to the surface, tonguing the spot when he was done. He rutted against Tony’s thigh, hips moving urgently. He kissed Tony again, hard and quick, then pushed him a little higher on the desk until he was sitting on it, Bucky tucked in the vee of Tony’s legs. “Gonna eat you right up like an ice cream.” Bucky slid to one knee, matching actions to works and took Tony down to the root in a single motion. His mouth was a hot, slick inferno and his tongue worked at Tony’s skin with skill and agility.
“Oh Christ,” Tony gasped. Quick, indeed; there was no slow savoring here. Bucky worked him with raw, ruthless efficiency, proving just how well Bucky knew Tony’s body. He clenched his hands in Bucky’s hair, hanging on for dear life. “God, Bucky, yes...”
Bucky slid two fingers into his mouth, teasing at Tony’s cock, his tongue working in between them, then, slippery with spit, drew them back, along the crease of Tony’s thigh until he was pressing at the entrance to Tony’s body, a quick little caress and tease, circling and encouraging Tony to thrust up, into Bucky’s mouth. The noises he was making were obscene, slick and wet, moaning almost continuously.
Tony whined and pushed up into the welcoming heat of Bucky’s mouth and throat. He shuddered at the sensation, and Bucky pressed one finger into Tony’s hole, not far, just enough to stretch and burn a little. It was enough to tip him over the edge. He cursed and jerked and then came, shooting down Bucky’s throat in a warm wave.
Bucky licked and tormented him through the aftershocks, until Tony was weakly batting him away, overstimulated and jittery. Bucky licked at his lip, his mouth red and swollen and used looking, face pink, hair sticking to his forehead. “You are utterly, utterly wrecked, babydoll,” Bucky said, smug jerk that he was.
“You’re not much better,” Tony retorted. He gingerly tucked himself back into his undersuit. “Do I get a turn at wrecking you next?”
“Yeah,” Bucky said, eyes flashing eagerly. “Wanna feel you, baby, your nice warm skin. Got a hand for me?”
“For you, sweetheart, always.” Tony dragged his hand over Bucky’s cock, teasing a little before wrapping firmly around it. He kissed down Bucky’s neck, sucking at the skin. “Think if I work hard enough at it, I can give you a hickey that’ll last long enough for some pap to get a picture?” he wondered. He sucked a little harder, pulling the soft skin between his teeth.
Bucky groaned, pushing into the pressure of Tony’s mouth, head falling back in supplication. “Don’t know that I even care,” he said, “damn, that feels good, Tony, oh, oh, yeah, like that, baby.”
Bucky might have started their tryst as a possessive marking of territory, but once he was into it, Tony was his sole focus. It was a little humbling, sometimes, the raw, naked longing that Tony could see in Bucky’s every movement. From the way he shuddered under Tony’s hand to the savage wantonness of his cries.
“That’s it,” Tony coaxed, working his hand faster, rolling over the tip to spread precome down Bucky’s cock. “So gorgeous, so perfect for me. Come for me, sweetheart, I want to feel you coming.” He licked at Bucky’s neck, the salty tang of sweat and skin, and if he hadn’t just climaxed, he’d be getting hard again.
Bucky rolled up onto his toes, fucking up into Tony’s hand. His fingers clamped down on Tony’s shoulders and he let his mouth drop open, all the stress and worries dropping off his features until they were smooth and relaxed. His eyes fluttered shut and then, “Oh, god, Tony.” His hips stuttered, pistoning wildly, two, three strokes. A soft sigh and he arched into it, painting Tony’s belly, hip, and the thigh of his flight suit with come.
Tony stroked him through it, peppering his face and neck with kisses. “So wonderful, so beautiful,” he murmured. He nosed at Bucky’s temple, dropping a soft kiss there. “Now who’s wrecked?” he teased.
“One ‘a these days,” Bucky said, huffing out a breath, “I’m gonna make you carry me.” He shuddered, resting his forehead against Tony’s shoulder for a long moment before yanking his tactical pants back up around his hips. He tucked himself in, belted the pants, but left the shirt open, showing off his chest, and a few round, red bite marks.
Tony found some napkins to wipe up the mess and then got himself back into the armor. He left the helmet off; the tender spot on his neck where Bucky had sucked a hickey would probably show nicely, and it definitely wasn’t a combat injury. “You want me to give you a lift back up to the ‘jet?”
Bucky took a step back, his knees obviously shaky. “Yes, yes, I would like that,” he decided, firmly. “You can sit with me on th’ way back to the Tower. I don’t think we need an aerial escort today.”
“Your wish is my command.” Tony caught Bucky’s hand in his -- he couldn’t feel it through the gauntlet, but it was nice anyway -- and led the way back out into the street. He caught Bucky around the waist. “Hold on,” he said. He waved at a returning bystander, giving their cell camera a bright press smile, and then took off, Bucky’s arms twined around his neck.
“Buck, you okay?” Steve asked, as they landed in the ‘jet.
“Yeah, Stevie,” Bucky said. “Just needed a hand with somethin’.”
Steve took a step forward, as if concerned, then his nostrils flared. “Buck!”
Jessica Jones, who was stripping out of her armor with very little regard for modesty, looked up. “What?”
“You can’t smell that?” Steve grimaced. “Really? Really, Buck?”
Bucky’s mouth twitched until he was forced to duck his chin to hide a wide grin and flushed cheeks. “Really.”
Tony dropped onto the bench beside his husband. “No need to get excited about it, Cap,” he said, probably more smugly than he should. “It’s just a little territory marking.”

Space Dreadnoughts is a Military Science Fiction anthology by David Drake, Martin H Greenberg and Charles G Waugh. The contents in order of appearance are: •"Introduction: A quick Look at Battle Fleets" by David Drake •"The Only Thing We Learn" by Cyril M. Kornbluth •"C-Chute" by Isaac Asimov •"Allamagoosa" by Eric Frank Russell (won the Hugo Award for best short story in 1955) •"A Question of Courage" by J. F. Bone •"Superiority" by Arthur C. Clarke •"Hindsight" by Jack Williamson •"The Last Battalion" by David Drake •"Shadow on the Stars" by Algis Budrys •"Time Lag" by Poul Anderson
The first Military Sci Fi story I remember is the Star Trek TOS episode "Balance of Terror," in which Enterprise duels with a Romulan interloper. The military conflict was setting to other conflicts between the crew, the story was full of suspense, and actual battle was a small part of the story. And so it is here.
The book's title is a misnomer. The back cover blurb is misleading-- "Massive and arrogant, they patrol the final war zone-- deep space. All great battleships before them-- . . . are mere toys in comparison." It goes on about "bristling artillery" and "battalions of soldiers." I expected fleet actions involving capital ships. Tactics. Maneuvers. Gunplay. While there are fleet actions and even battleships in some of these stories, they are mere backdrops on a stage where people play out the stories. Truly good Science Fiction involves people, and in all these stories, the people overshadow the military settings that serve only to bring out the characters and whatever lessons there are to be learned from them. All of these stories are well worth reading.
"Introduction: A quick Look at Battle Fleets" Mr Drake's introduction is a wonderful retrospective about the history of the Dreadnought battleships with a mention of two 1950's Astounding essays on the armaments of spaceships-- one by Willy Ley, the other by Malcolm Jameson. If one is going to write stories about ship-to-ship combat, the introduction is a good starting point. But only a starting point. One should definitely read Mahan, and consider the lessons of Taranto and Pearl Harbor. And the US Navy's Harpoon's and Tomahawk's are wonderful arguments in favor of missles over guns. One should also consider the time honored techniques of ramming and boarding actions.
Perhaps the question of guns vs missles is mooted today. Todays real world warships employ both-- including the Iowa class heavy battleships brought out of retirement and refurbished for President Reagan's naval buildup of the 1980's. The arms race has continued in Sci-Fi beyond what could be imagined with a knowledge of 1950's physics. The Ley and Jameson essays were written before fighters raked Formoria, before rail guns, and CTD imploders, before GRASER's, X-ray LASER's and phaser banks, before the Moties bombarded Mote Prime with asteroids, and before Captain Sheridan laid a gigaton on Z'ha'dum.
"The Only Thing We Learn" Kornbluth tells a cautionary tale of faded Imperial glory. The barbarians at the gates will one day have descendants that are as decadent and prissy as the effete and ineffectual empire they deposed and replaced. History blurs and magnifies the epic tales of glory. The details are lost. The character is lost. One day a fresh wave of barbarians sweeps aside succcessors that their ancestors would be ashamed to acknowledge. The reader may decide what relationship if any there is between this story and the quote from Friedrich Hegel. A fun story despite the dire consequences for the past and future losers. In  his column, "Rereading Kornbluth", Robert Silverberg calls The Only Thing We Learn, "a subtle, oblique, elliptical, sardonic piece of work."
"C-Chute" Dr. Asimov wrote this story in 1951. It is a psychodrama set aboard a passenger ship taken as a prize by a race of chlorine breathers in Earth's first intersteller war. Each of the passengers is sketched by Asimov to reveal their several flaws of personality, physicality or character. Each has reasons why he should not exit the cabin via the C-chute, EVA, and enter and retake the control room from outside the ship. The reason for the dubious hero to take the heroic action required to retake the ship is one unlikey to appear in the work of any author but Dr. Asimov.
"Allamagoosa" This story won the 1955 Hugo for best short story. It's a farcical look at officious bureaucracy of the greatest gravity. It's sort of a shaggy dog story, wink, wink. This story in and of itself is worth buying the book for. The build up and so obvious in hindsight ending is fresh enough to be as enjoyable today as it was then.
"A Question of Courage" Sometimes flair and heedless risk taking can be mistaken for true personal courage. When the genuine article appears, there's no mistaking it. Bone craftliy deveops his characters and sets the reader up for the old maidish Captain "Cautious Charley" Chase of Lachesis to reveal his true nature. It is available from Project Gutenberg.
"Superiority" Sir Arthur requires no introduction for this story, a reductio ad absurdum about the principle of Illusory Superiority. Technology and bedazzlment with the latest, most theoretically wonderful advances are no substitutes for common sense and sound military doctrine. Perhaps this should serve as a cautionary tale at a time when Iraqi insurgents hack into our drones. According to Wikipedia, this gem was required reading at West Point. The reader easily empathizes with the narrator and his plight, revealed at the end.
"Hindsight" Jack Williamson has won both the Nebula and the Hugo Awards, and had a career that spanned about seventy years. This story involves temporal mechanics and love, oppression and liberation, and meeting engagements. Incidentally, the guns employed by the Astrach's fleet are of 20-inch caliber and fire four salvos per second. It's a tightly written story, though I think the ending is a little drippy.
"The Last Battalion" Imagine that Hitler did not die in a bunker in Berlin, but escaped via U-Boat to a secret Waffen-SS base in New Swabia. There German scientists built flying saucers from which they reached the moon to to mine aluminum and build more flying saucers. Now imagine them getting into a war with aliens. With things not looking so good, they kidnap a US Senator to let him know what is going on, intending to drag the US into the conflict. Before they can get where they're going with the Senator, the aliens lay a nuke on their Antartic base. They drop the Senator off to find his own way home. He asks them what they will do. Their colonel replies, we are SS-- we will fight.
"Shadow on the Stars" Budrys's Farlans are felinoid aliens who at first blush look like humans in cat suits. But they are, on a closer look, "raving paranoid quote." The paranoia is pathological and eventually fatal for Farla-- any military leader with sufficient ability to be effective cannot be trusted by Farla's rulers, and will be killed at the earliest sign of that fatal disease, military competence. The story is a retrospective, the central character telling how he and Farla came to be in their present straits. It is too late for him to convey the warning against trusting Earth, and to late to avoid the inevitable dissolution of Farla.
I have a problem accepting the plot device Budrys uses to set up the narrative, but otherwise the story is interesting and fun to read. The prose is a bit over decourous and affected, but that brings out the effeteness and pretentiousness of the Farlan culture. At the start, the Farlans are hard-pressed by a barabarian culture, the Vilk, and need a strong, capable leader to drive them back. OF course the strong, capable leaders keep their heads down so has not to find themselves assassinated by the Ministry of Preparedness-- and then comes L'Miranid. A previously unknown reservist, he quickly dominates the Fleet and whips them into shape. Victory follows victory until the Vilk host is driven back, their subject planets pounded to rubble, and a Farlan imposed king seated upon their throne.
The real story action is not fleet engatgements and daring raids, though. The story is related by Henlo, one of those capable leaders who has balanced command of a capital ship wtih avoiding notice by the governmental hunters down of competence. He starts the story as having a clear understanding of Farla's problems and the steps necessary to remedy them, but can't afford to be noticed. He becomes L'Mararind's aid, admirer, vice-admiral, intended assasin and successor, and finally, his unwilling co-conspirator and successor. Unwilling to be assasinated himself, he seizes control of the Farlan government. By this time, the sad (for Farla) truth is known to him, but (I love Latin quotes.) "alea jacta est." This is a fine little story with a lovely twist toward the end.
"Time Lag" Poul Anderson has won both the Hugo and Nebula Awards. Time Lag is a study in contrasts-- evil, greedy invaders against noble, selfless defenders. Chertkoi is a heavily overpopulated industrial planet, drowning in pollution and resource starved. Vaynamo is pristine, with a population sustainable through resource management. Vayanmo is never the less technologically advanced, with the technology's goal as preservation rather than exploitation. Expolitation is the name of Chertkoi's game. It's people conquer other worlds to fuel the industrial fires that smother their world under a cloud of pollution.
The archetype of the Chertoi is the Admiral commanding the invasion fleet. He is matched against the story's view point character, Elva. Elva is the widow of a Vayanmoan noble and prisoner of the Admiral. He is gross, vulgar and uncouth. She is pretty, cultured and well-mannered. He is a love struck boor, hopelessly smitten by her. She subtly endures his presence to manipulate him so that she an return herself and the other captives to Vayanmo in a portrayal that is believable and sympathetic. The invasion is a leveraged takeover in three stages-- a scouting raid, a strategic strike to destroy what little industry the Vayanmo posses, and a full-scale invasion. The title relativistic time lag (fifteen years) gives the Chertkoi time to build their invasion fleet and the Vaynamo time to prepare their reception.
