第149回 🎧 「CLIMATE DISINFOBESITY: BABY IT'S SIZZLING COLD OUTSIDE W/ PATRICK RODDIE(ベイビー・イッツ・シズリング・コールド・アウトサイド)」。
By Ground Zero Radio on Oct 06, 2022 02:00 am
As I was perusing the internet today and doing my daily reading, I found a very confusing headline on Yahoo News.
The headline read, “Earth’s temperature to dip but still sizzle in 2017.” I read it over and over again trying to figure out what the hell it meant. Then I decided that yet again this was a headline of newspeak basically pointing out that no matter how cold it is outside the temperatures are hopefully going to climb and sizzle so that the global warming cult can justify their climate apocalypse stories.
This headline tells me that it isn’t fake news that we should worry about in 2017 but junk news that leads to infobesity, which later creates a problem of disinfobesity, meaning that your intellectual health will be left fattened with lies.

Research #2 - On internet anonymity
This class was about reading articles that all tackled the tricky subject of anonymity on the Internet.
1- What started this conversation ? The dossier opened with a paper saying the pandemic revealed how the average citizen lacked of information literacy, whose importance can't be denied in regards of the phenomenoms of infobesity and infodemic we are facing. Fake news being a thing as well, it all looks like ending anonymity o the internet could be a solution, since sources would be clearly stated.
2- How's it working so far ? There was then an article that compare how anonymity (or its absence) affected social platforms. The main argument was the difference between Facebook and 4chan.
Facebook has a an economy to run. It aims at collecting data about its users and use it to sell products through personnalized advertising. Therefore, anonymity is absolutly pointless. 4chan on the other hand is more about creating communities around memes and common interests. It's not about what your name is, but are you funny or not (to simplify it).
Anonymity also enables a (almost) complete freedom of speech. It has its tragic downsides, such as the Meier's affair, but it's important regarding political issues. 4chan was, for example, the birthplace of the Anonymous.
3- Is Internet the real problem ? After reading all the articles in the dossier, I found Internet was not the core problem here. Fake news, harassment, anonymous activism, it all existed before the first computer was even created. Anonymity in itself can't be tagged as good or bad. It just is. What makes it beneficial or harmful is our intentions. One of the articles even mentionned that only 13% of Wikipedia contributors are women. But there aren't much more women in Congress. Again, n ot an Internet-only problem. In regards of fake news : most of them are easily debunkab le if you take time to do a little digging. But peopledon't do it, so ending anonymity wouldn't solve anything in this matter.
Sure, Internet enabled people to take advantage of anonymity way further than in real life. But if we really want to fight its downsides, we should study what are the core motivations and causes of those harmful behaviour. This, in my opinion, will be far more effective that banning anonymity.
Plus, this is Internet. We'd find a way around it anyways.

Disconnect and Reconnect
A Reflection Paper on a Documentary Video “Deluge by Data”
Submitted by: Brylle James Sanoy BSCS-1A
Technology has changed how the world was before. It brought us ease and has improved the way we live. As time passes by, emerging techs and invention were out and most of them took up data. These data help us to have the right amount of information we need depending on how we use it. Data are also used as a baseline information in which it would be an essential ingredient in the process of recreating new techs. But looking to the other side of the coin, technology also has its disadvantages which becomes our problem and enemy if we are irresponsible to handle it. Deluging ourselves to too much data taken from the internet or from our own gadgets could affect the way we live. In the present generation, data are outgrowing in numbers making the people of today’s generation become addicted to it. People are so obsessed with data and sometimes they are not aware that they have become data addicts.
The documentary video by DocZone “Deluged by Data” talks about how the present generation is reacting to data and how it is changing the way we live. People have become addicted to data to the point of finding happiness in numbers through data observation. They believed that these data gathering would bring them happiness. They have become dependent on the data they took from their own gadgets and inventions. They have improvised algorithms that would help them gather the certain data they need. People are always hunger for data and they didn’t stop in getting data from their gadgets.
We are now living in the digital age where most people rely on technology. The younger generations are becoming more expressive on social media rather than in real life. It would take them hours to stay focused on their mobile devices to update their virtual life. Taking selfies has become an issue and a mental disorder. People are fond of taking pictures which some are just random just to document everything they do. From taking pictures of the place they go to, the food, their recent activity, selfies, and even taking pictures something out of random. Due to this, people are focused more on getting the right angle, rather than enjoying the moment. It could also result to a thousands of pictures which will be soon be forgotten due to data overload.
As part of the younger generation, I cannot deny the fact that I have also been a data hoarder. I sometimes spent most of my time staring my phone and surfing the internet just for fun. I also most likely express my own thoughts on Twitter. I still connect with my friends but there are just instances where I just feel it more comfortable to just tweet it. I also have this YouTube addiction where I could watch vlogs without noticing the time. Staring at my phone and engaging myself in the virtual world feels like I am free to express more of myself. Reading additional information in the Internet excites me. It also creates new thoughts and idea which sometimes I could connect it from other ideas as well.
There are also instances where I disconnect myself from my gadget because I sometimes find it boring to just sit there and surf the Internet. Sometimes it would take me just a couple of hours and then I check my phone for some notifications. When I disconnect with my phone, it feels calm because there are times that the Internet is stressing me out. With too much information from the Internet, I sometimes can’t handle it anymore. Disconnecting from it for a while feels relaxing. I engage myself talking to my friends and connecting with them. I also sometimes create conversations with my family with my gadget shut down.
Honestly, I am fond of scanning the social media for these emerging trend today called memes. These are pictures which creates humor and sometimes just new ideas which are worth sharing. Whenever I open my social media account, I just cannot mind the time and my attention will be on my social media account, specifically Facebook, sharing memes. I am fond of sharing memes because they bring joy and could sometimes reduce stress. It could also give us new information and sometimes could also give us awareness about social issues. The fact that I am fond of monitoring my social accounts, I am suffering from infobesity. There are instances that I don’t know where to believe in anymore because there is too much information in the cyberspace. Too much information causes confusion to where is the truth between these countless information we get.
People are becoming data addicts. They are hungry for new information which leads to data overload. As part of today’s generation and being a data addict, I believe it is only right to go through data Sabbath or at least data diet, coined by in the documentary video. Data diet is when you disconnect from your gadget or your virtual life for a long period of time. It should be a must that we should control the number of hours we spend on our gadgets. We should disconnect with our virtual life for a while and reconnect with the people around us who are the real ones. Deluging on too much data should be minimize. We should learn to classify on which data do we need to keep and which data we do not need. We should learn to sort out all the data we get from our gadgets. I believe that it is time that we should take a break and deluge ourselves with real data, our own personal life which is away from the virtual world.
Seeking for new information is not a bad idea at all. I know that technology and the Internet was made for a good reason and I believe that it is to make life easier and improve the way we live. Data overload and data addiction has become an issue because people are abusing the potential that these techs could provide. Yes, we people are curious and like to explore more about it but I think we have gone too far. We are crossing borders and we are on our way to replacing ourselves with digital robots. We take too much time to improve ourselves in the virtual world rather than the real world. It’s time to disconnect with the virtual life and reconnect with the real life. There is nothing wrong with being fond of seeking new information just be sure to monitor it wisely. As what our Miss Universe 2018, Catriona Gray said, “Everything is good, but in moderation”.

Are you deluged by data? A Reflection Paper
In today’s era of technology, the trend of using gadgets is expanding, the use of social media sites is increasing, and the absorption of the new technologies is escalating. The intensifying result of this rapid change is the multiplying numbers of data we created and absorb. But, the risk of having the bad data habit of some individual might increase. As revealed in the video, some of the people are really deluged by data. The question is are you one of them? Are you infected?
Yes, definitely, I am deluged by data, because since I engaged in the digital world, I was like trying to quench my thirst by being part of this era and being one of the people curious about what was this thing has or this century have. It was all started when I am in Grade 9, when my mom bought me my first android smartphone as a reward for my academic excellence. Since then I started to take a picture everywhere, every time and at every moment. I started to be engaged in such social media sites like Facebook and Twitter. But I am totally get addicted with Facebook. Aside of those, I obtain such a large number of data to suffice my wants and needs or in short, my thirst like downloading pictures of everything I imagine and wanted. As I remember, those are images from the Divergent movie and other beautiful girls I saw in the image’s sites. I am really sure that our school Wi-Fi plays a big role to this bad habit. The habit continues and increase in the higher years especially when I reached Grade 10. Where most of our activities and moments happened is captured and recorded. From quizzes, performance, group pictures, group bonding, relationships, the school itself, awarding, people and many more are all captured. When higher years came, obsession in taking pictures and downloading media takes a slow improvement. Maybe, this is because of my education focus motive and new lifestyle. Senior High School years to me is projects and school performance focused because of the need of time and heavy tasks. Also, my phone got broken because it falls to a hard surface ground and needed to be fixed to be used again and I am actually defining this as the main reasons why I made my bad habits rarely. After that scene, my focus shifted to the usage of Facebook where I honestly revealed that I get addicted with.
I really feel and understand **torontoluck **of her habit in taking pictures time by time. Also, I get hooked with what Digital Organizer Daina Makinson said that “the more photos you have, the harder they are to find.” She is totally right I experience this when my teacher asks me to send her the photos happened on the day we have the activity and unfortunately it has months passed, and I have thousands of photos to scroll and look at it each by each. But, of all those bad digital habits I’m glad that I did not fail with my subjects but just get have a hard time in complying each.
As I remembered, infobesity is also known as Information Overload and as what the people experience in the video, yes, I have suffered with it. Now, I am working on it to manage the information I have absorbed.
It started in my recent years in high school, but not that worst as the people in the video have experienced, when I am hunger with knowledge just to satisfy people’s expectation. I studied a lot of things, I read a lot of books and information and I watched lots of informative videos. Because of my eagerness to gain knowledge, I never noticed that I am spending my whole time with it, I sleep every 1 AM in the morning and skipped some of my meals. Even my mom scolded me about it. After a week of doing it, I felt confused and always distracted of the things I always say, and I have observed it like what happened to me during my reporting in class, I am reading my visual aid, but I can’t explain it well and I get stammered even if I am not used to it. So, then I conclude that I may have an Information Overload where my brain can’t process and absorb the information because it is simultaneous, no breaks, and as a result confusion eaten me with sleepless nights.
Speaking in technology, I guess just last month, I experience information overload in my Gmail account when I subscribe to more than a hundred of pages and channels which result to a bunch of emails, I received every day. The worst here is I get a hard time in finding the emails of my teacher to me and the important emails as well. So, after my task and projects I decided to clean my Gmail and unsubscribe to most of the sites, pages and channels.
I am really sure that I need a digital diet. A way of consuming the technology in a healthy way. I need to be wise now and be smarter to face this struggle and disconnect with the bad data habit. I need to take and absorb these technologies in a healthy way where I cannot harm myself, my relationship with my family and friends, and my good habits. I need also to lessen this engagement in technologies and social media sites. Actually, I am doing it a long time ago but in a gradual way to slowly absorb the change by my body. I lessen the time I spend with Facebook and Online games. I am more with bonding with friends, family and even my pets, which is one of my stress relievers. Everything really works fine and well. Just disconnect to reconnect with myself totally.
Speaking of disconnecting, yes this is what I really want, I’m sure, and I gradually do it now. Of course, when you disconnect with your devices, you will feel the real happiness and life, you will feel the nature and you will feel yourself by not measuring your heartbeat or mood but by letting them flow in your body and do what it wants.
Disconnecting with your devices in today’s era of technology and rapid spread of information is totally hard. You may go into process and actions that your body might have a hard time in absorbing it. As I watched the last part of the video, I truly see people’s true happiness and others still experiencing Phantom Phone Syndrome. I really love the idea of the Camp Grounded Summer Camp, and I hope we have here in the Philippines, because they are teaching the adults to put away their gadgets and to reconnect in real life. Also, the Digital Decontamination where they are removing the gadgets in the hands of the adults. The whole set-up of the Camp Grounded is really fit to the people nowadays, from the simple jobs likes using typewriter to feel the mistakes, Human Search where sharing of knowledge of everyone, and just enjoy disconnecting. Also, part of their goal is to teach them to feel and bond with friends, live life simple, love moments not the material things and most importantly Disconnect to Reconnect, reconnect with yourself.

Dealing with information overload
In 2011, it was discovered that people consume 5 times more information than they did in 1986, which has the equivalency of 174 whole newspapers a day. It sounds like an absurd amount but just think - 72 hours of YouTube video are uploaded, 350,000 tweets are tweeted, and 49,000 Instagram posts are submitted every single minute. Coupled with many individuals being equipped with smartphones, data plans, and social media apps, it begins to be clear how we can consume so much.
Information overload is a term used to describe the phenomenon of there being so much information that one has difficulty making decisions. The human brain can only process so much information, and when faced with the incredible amounts of consumption occurring each and every day, our decision-making capacity is reduced (Speier, Valacich & Vessey 1999).
Tumblr media
Clary Shirky notes in this quote that the core problem isn’t the intense amount of information in our lives, but the way in which we fail to filter out the information that isn’t applicable to us. Think of an apple farm where you harvest every fruit you can get your hands on - rotten and unripe ones are all picked indiscriminately. As a farmer, you would want a means of filtering out the bad apples from the good ones in the pursuit of productivity and efficiency.
Thus, what are some ways we can selectively harvest relevant information amidst all of the noise? How do you alleviate information overload?
Tumblr media
Different techniques and methods marry together to create a filter for everything to fall through. The results lead to better decision making, increased certainty in the day to day intake of material and thinking, and more mental energy for everything else in your life.
When it is easier to sort through everything, you can find yourself resting a bit easier.
Check out the following posts on how to do just that:

How to have a healthy info-diet
Keep disciplined
Don’t multitask!

Information overload is something you’ve likely felt or dealt with at least once. It is the feeling you get when, after hours of searching the web, you realize there’s so much data in your head that you can no longer think clearly.
Information overload has many alternative names — “infoxication”, “infobesity”, and data smog. No matter the name, the meaning stays the same.
Information overload is the state of feeling overwhelmed by the volume of information to the point at which one feels more confused than knowledgeable about a particular topic. Information overload can manifest itself as brain fog and difficulty making decisions.
In general, information overload is the kind of stress you feel when you consume more information than you can “digest” (and more than it is needed to make a decision).
For the Finals
Our brains are not trays at an all-you-can-eat buffet. Just like we should care about what and how much we eat, we should pay attention to the quantity and quality of the information we consume.
Remember that what junk food does to our bodies is not much different to what junk content does to our minds. And with such amount of information available to us at any given moment, it’s important to be mindful of when our brains are full and need a chance to digest.
