There are many 'unsung heroes in the country of India, whose inspiring stories few people know about. And especially the people associated with the country's RAW agency always remain anonymous. Their exploits are always locked in files. Similarly, the story of 'Unsung Hero' has been brought by "Lucknow Central" fame filmmaker Ranjit M Tiwari in his super thriller "Bellbottom", which can be seen in theaters from August 19. This story is based on the true events of the 1984 hijacking of Indian Airlines Flight IC 421 @ Hijack.

Story:

This story is about a RAW agent's courage, intelligence, and courage, due to which not only all the passengers of the hijacked plane are saved alive, but the terrorists who hijacked that plane are also caught. The background of the film is in the eighties when the Prime Minister of the country used to be Indira Gandhi (Lara Dutta). This was the period when Pakistan pretended friendship with India after the 1971 defeat. But in the eighties, five Indian planes were hijacked in seven years and every time the hijacked plane was taken to Lahore city of Pakistan. Every time the name of some Indian organization used to come up. Every time while making a pact, Pakistan used to get crores of rupees to those terrorists along with getting rid of some terrorists. Whereas India felt that the Pak government helped. Pak gets rid of such a hijacked airplane in this way, but Anshul Malhotra (Akshay Kumar), who is expertise in everything, had to lose his mother (Dolly Ahluwalia). This pain of Anshul makes him a RAW agent. While he was thinking of clearing the UPSC exam while leading a happy life after marrying Radhika (Vani Kapoor). His wife Radhika was working in MTNL. But the chief of RAW, thinking of making Anshul's pain his strength, prepares Anshul to become an agent of 'RAW' in his own style and his codename in 'RAW' is 'Bell Bottom'. He vows to expose the role of Pakistan's Intelligence Bureau (IAS) behind the hijacked planes by taking the lead in the country's security.

On 24 August 1984, the plane with 210 passengers is hijacked again. First, the hijackers land this plane in Amritsar, but after some time they take it to Lahore. It does not take long for the news of the hijacking to reach Delhi. Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (Lara Dutta) immediately holds a meeting with high officials and ministers. Government ministers again advise negotiating through Pakistan. But RAW officer (Adil Hussain) advises Prime Minister Indira Gandhi to meet RAW agent bellbottom Anshul (Akshay Kumar) once. Indira Gandhi calls Bellbottom. On Akshay Kumar's advice, she tells Pakistan's Prime Minister Zia-ul-Haq not to talk to the kidnappers. Due to this, Pak gets angry and sends the plane to Dubai, because the hijackers are only IAS officers. Regardless of the resistance of the priests, Indira Gandhi, this time entrusts the responsibility of saving the lives of 210 passengers to Bellbottom. Bellbottom begins work on it with the help of four of his fellow RAW agents. Where he takes the help of a woman (Huma Qureshi) in Dubai. But this mission turns out to be quite complicated. Many turns and effects in the story made it more interesting.

Writing and Direction:

Ranjeet M Tiwari has given a great introduction to his directorial skills in a strong screenplay by Aseem Arora and Parvez Sheikh. But the biggest weak link of this film is Lara Dutta, who plays Indira Gandhi. But the director is also responsible for this to some extent. While doing Lara Dutta's prosthetic makeup for Indira Gandhi's look, the entire team focused on the 'nose'. Did not pay attention to the overall look. Secondly, the power and status that Indira Gandhi had in her voice are also lacking. The way Indira Gandhi used to talk to her ministers or officials was forgotten. The film is a bit weak before the interval, but much better after the interval. Some cheeky dialogues in the film attract the audience towards it. The director kept the thrill alive till the end. The turn of the character of Radhika i.e. Vaani Kapoor shown at the end of the film is amazing. The music of the film is also a weak link. But the film can be seen. People troubled due to the Corona epidemic will also get some pleasure by seeing 'Bellbottom'.

An honest account of life and times of Mohsina Kidwai

Looking at the participation of women and especially Muslim women in politics and their representation in the Parliament, it’s surprising to know that only 20 Muslim women have been elected as Members of Parliament since inception.

She won from Azamgarh, Eastern Uttar Pradesh, in 1978, a year after Congress had suffered a resounding defeat, leaving Nagaur (Rajasthan) and Chhindwara (Madhya Pradesh) for Indira Gandhi. And none of its candidates including Sanjay Gandhi could win.

Mohsina Kidwai, the president of the Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee, hailing from a conservative, elite Muslim family of Awadh, won. Her success gave a fresh lease of life to Congress. Within no time, once again in 1980, Congress not only back in power but also won a majority in most of the State Assemblies.

Mohsina Qadwai not only saw Indian politics from 1960 to 2016 but was also part of its ups and downs and she described them all in the name of My Life in Indian Politics in Hindi and English.

Her memoirs have been documented by senior journalist and author Rashid Kidwai.

Thereafter Congress remained active under Indira Gandhi and later Rajiv Gandhi till 1989. Both these leaders included Mohsina Kidwai in their cabinets. During her tenure as a union minister, Mohsina handled her work with transparency leaving no scope for allegations of any sort.

She had already served in the Uttar Pradesh cabinet and also led the State unit of the party.

Kidwai presided over Congress in UP in the most difficult times. As AICC General Secretary she tried her best to keep Congress — from Kerala to Himachal, including Bihar and Chhattisgarh, — in power and she was often successful.

Mohsina Kidwai made her debut at the age of 28 when she was elected a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council in 1960. At that time her father-in-law Jamilur Rahman Kidwai was the pillar of Congress politics in Uttar Pradesh.

Interestingly, Mohsina Kidwai’s record as a leader and political career is clean; her family never had to face embarrassment in terms of even allegations of corruption, etc.

She went on to emerge as a staunch Muslim, enlightened, and secular leader. Undoubtedly she had the support of Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, and above all the encouragement and political guidance of his father-in-law Jameel Kidwai. Those who know her personally, have an appreciation for the role her husband Khalilur Rahman Kidwai played in her rise.

In her case, it was Khaleel Kidwai was the quintessential man behind every woman’s success.

In the book, you will find commendable impressions about famous faces of Indian politics including Sonia Gandhi, Manmohan Singh, Digvijay Singh, AK Antony, Bhupesh Baghel, Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Sharmila Tagore, and Shabana Azmi.

Similarly, Mohsina Kidwai has spoken about her colleagues and contemporaries in detail and to some extent candidly. These include Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sonia Gandhi, Arjun Singh, ND Tiwari, Dr. Manmohan Singh, Pranab Mukherjee, Ahmed Patel, Lalu Prasad Yadav, Chandrashekhar, Devegowda, IK Gujral and Madhavrao Scindia, who worked with him. Sachin Pilot’s name also figures in the book.

It would have been better if she had shed some light on the events and incidents during the time of Rajiv Gandhi and Narasimha Rao, which to some extent led to the downfall of the Congress.

The book portrays Mohsina Kidwai as a sensible and skilled politician; an ideal wife, a good mother, a good sister, and a caring woman for her family.

The choice of words for her daughters and sons-in-law is endearing. She has dedicated the book to her late husband Khalilur Rahman Kidwai. He wrote:

“I dedicate this book to my husband late Khalilur Rahman Kidwai who always inspired me to fly towards my dreams and serve society and the nation. Khalil, your Rooh (soul) has always been with me.

Mohsina Kidwai and her biographer Rashid Kidwai not only belong to the Kidwai family of Barabanki but both of them are related to Maulana Abdul Majeed Dariyabadi, whom the former called Dada. Dada happened to be the maternal grandfather of Rasheed Kidwai.

Like Mohsina Kidwai has left her mark as a determined and strong leader, Rashid Kidwai has done a yeoman’s work in journalism and as an author.

Anyway, thank you Mohsina Kidwai for sharing important developments of Indian politics and her life on her 90th birthday, and to Rasheed Kidwai Kidwai for bringing it to the fore.

This book has been published in English and Urdu and should be translated into Hindi for more people to read. This biography is an honest account of not only Kidwai’s journey but of an era of Indian politics.

I give it the story a 10/10

Spoilers

The movie begins in a brothel and with a girl that had been sold to them, her name was Madhu. She refused to be a prostitute so Madame Rashmidai tortured her. Seen that it wasn't working she callled Gangubai for help and to persuade Madhu to become a prostitute.

There you finally see Gangubai, dressed in white and beautiful. She tells this girl her story. How she was tricked by her boyfriend with a promise of a film career and how she was sold for Rs 1000. She is forced by madame Sheela to prostitute herself and she changes her name to Gangu. While she was there she befriend Kamli. She then later is asked by Sheela to take a customer and that he has already paid so Gangu has to please him, what she didn't know is that this man would beat her up for his satisfaction. After she gets put of the hospital she goes to Rahim Lala for help and so he does. When this man goes again Sheela asks Gangu to once again please this man, this time the man gets beaten by Rahim Lala.

After this Sheela dies and Gangu becomes the madame of her brothel and she changes her name to Gangubai. After Gangubai is done with her story she asks Madhu if she still wanted to stay and then gives her a choice of two candies, one is a normal candy and the other has poison. Seeing than Madhu prefers to die Gangubai takes and send her home.

After this you see how much everyone loves Gangubai, her longing of her family, how hard her life is but she always strove for better and she became a powerful women at the end.

This film is inspired by real woman named Gangubai Kathiawadi who was a "mafia queen".

It was a very beautiful piece of art. I loved every second of it. You could see and hear (through the songs) how Gangubai felt. It is very inspiring and even with all the hardship she went through she helped others. The dancing scene was very beautiful also.

For characters I give it 10/10

This is my first Indian movie and the first time watching these actors, hopefully I can see them in other movies. Alia had a powerful voice and attitude that was perfect for a mafia queen. Afsan was so lovely and I would've hope that their love would flourish. Mr.Fezi, I found that I really appreciated how he gave Gangubai's voice more potency for others to hear her and understand her. Kamli! Another beautiful character!

I give the soundtrack a 10/10

Amazing! Even when the characters are not talking, the choices of song will tell you the story or the emotion the character is going through. Simply amazing.

This movie is based on a real woman, Gangubai Kathiawadi, the mafia queen.

It's the most watch Indian movie on Netflix, with 50 million viewers.

From the comfort of a wealthy barrister’s family to the distressing confinement of a brothel, a young woman’s life is drastically transformed overnight. Her world is shattered and her naivety crushed as she struggles to grapple with her new reality. Dealing with scandalous labels and a lack of respect, she slowly rises in stature becoming a formidable force in the ‘gallis’ of Kamathipura. Gangubai Kathiawadi is a motivational narration of this young girl’s journey. It sheds a new light on the resilient women behind what is considered to be a ‘disgraceful’ profession. 

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has the ability to create a unique universe that sucks the audience into its extravagance. All his films are renowned for their grand visuals and this one is no exception. However, this is the first time his true expertise as a director and editor comes forth. His previous films showed off his attention to detail and love for marvelous universes but due to flimsy scripts these films were never able to rise above the beauty. In Gangubai Kathiawadi, the strongest aspect is the script. The film relies on character development, and creates a host of identifiable characters, with Gangu at the forefront. The visuals serve as a means to support the emotionally-driven narrative. From the set design that transported us into this fantastical world, to the melodious soundtrack that enchanted us, to the metaphorical editing that made us aware of Gangu’s plight. Our emotions are tethered to the narrative due to the brilliance in filmmaking. 

The only weak element of this film is the romantic angle. Gangu’s relationship with Afshaan serves only one purpose, to elevate the two beautiful musical tracks picturized on them. The passionate chemistry they share is delightful to witness but barely meaningful. The tragic, painful aspect of a prostitute falling in love is never explored, and their bond remains at the surface level. This is the sole failing of an otherwise immaculate script. 

Despite the weakness of the love story, film debutante Shantanu Maheshwari does an amazing job in the role of Afshaan. As a dancer, his movements are lyrical and make the romantic sequences even more enchanting. Other standout supporting performances include Seema Pahwa as the ruthless brothel owner, Sheela Mausi, and Indira Tiwari as Kamli, Gangu’s closest friend and confidante. Both of them fully lose themselves in the lives of the women they are portraying thus creating characters that are extremely memorable. While the supporting actors are brilliant, the weight of the film rests on Alia Bhatt’s shoulders. As the primal character that drives the narrative, Gangu is no easy character to portray. Alia Bhatt has time and again proved her prowess as an actress, and this is one more phenomenal performance by her. 

Gangubai Kathiawadi is a story of women empowerment, that shows a different perspective of the lives of prostitutes. This rich, detailed view highlights the emotional aspects of the lifestyle including strong female camaraderie, failed romantic pursuits, and slowly developing bonds of respect. It shows the plight of these women, their daily struggles with their sense of self and at the same time glorifies their strength. Overall, the film is a powerful take on a story of respect and courage and serves its purpose of sensitizing the audience to the lives of these women.
