I’ve been very curious about RobLes as a pairing and I haven’t gone down the rabbit hole yet but 👀 Tropic Thunder was a hoot and Les Grossman was such an entertaining character simply because Tom did a great job. I do hope to see him do comedies and even more romcoms in the future because he has the comedic timing for it!!

oaksy and i have been obsessing over this pairing since January 2021 and it's been almost a full year and i still love them so much. we have a very elaborate timeline that we've created for them (that ultimately ends with them also getting together with Barry Berkman, from HBO's show Barry) and some fleshed out backstory for them as well, and it's been very very fun. we've also created countless AUs for them bc we don't know how to stop.

(also have a separate timeline with @maverickcalf where Mitch McDeere from The Firm is also thrown into the mix but that's another story for another day)

Les Grossman really is such a great character. tho if you'd told me a year ago that he'd become a comfort character of mine I would've laughed. 😂 but. i Love Him now. Tropic Thunder also helped me discover my newfound love for Bill Hader, which I'm eternally grateful for.

Tom really should do more comedies! he has excellent comedic timing and he's great at physical comedy. movies like Rock of Ages, The Mummy 2017, American Made, and Knight and Day really highlight that. you can even see glimpses of it in M:I! i enjoy his comedic acting so much.

BLESS you oaksy. as i have adopted pretty much all the top gun kids i will answer this question for everybody that we know of so far.

go to a wedding with - payback fitch (jay ellis), coyote (greg tarzan davis), fritz (manny jacinto). Have You Seen Them. we would outshine the bride and groom.

go to a party with - phoenix (monica barbaro), omaha (kara wang), bradley bradshaw (miles teller). bradley for sure would be a lot of fun to hang out with (see: piano playing scene and beach football scene in the trailer), and we've only seen a glimpse of omaha when she high-fived phoenix in the beach football scene in the trailer, but she and phoenix (who was also seen Cutting Loose in the piano scene) both seem like they'd be fun to hang out with.

go to a museum with - fanboy (danny ramirez), bob floyd (lewis pullman). i am always down to geek out at museums with fellow nerds.

Misc Movies:

you inspired a fire by @arcanistvysoren (A Few Good Men) Rating: E I recommend reading this immediately after watching A Few Good Men. It's a Jack Ross x Daniel Kaffee fic, and it's cited as the main reason I started shipping them. This is nearly 20k words and it's so well written. 

Worth Your Weight in Gold by @rochc93 (Tropic Thunder) Rating: E This is the best smut I've ever read in my life. Just read it. (Ok there’s slightly more to this story but I don’t want to give it away. It’s just AGH it’s good, it hits me where I live.) 

In the middle ground by @maverickcalf (Cocktail 1988) Rating: E This fic is on the shorter side, but i think it’s worth recommending a lot. It’s just a very well written scene of “self-intimacy”, if you catch my drift. The vibes are relaxing. Very well done :D. 

New Year's Daybreak by @maverickcalf & @rochc93 (A Few Good Men & The Firm crossover) Rating: G What if Mitch McDeere and Daniel Kaffee were cousins and both queer? That’s the gist of this story and I love it so much. It’s a nice family centric fic about the two lawyer characters Tom has played and I highly recommend it. 

Mission: Impossible (Mostly benthan stuff)

A Soft Drop by @barbex (Ethan x Max) Rating: E This one is a d/s Ethan fic, which are always a favorite of mine (as you’ll soon see on this list). Anyway if you have ever watched the original M:I movie and thought: Ethan and Max Definitely fucked, this fic is for you. 

Are You In? by twowritehands (Benji x Ethan) Rating: E What if Benji and Ethan fucked on that boat in Austria? What is the aftermath of that and how does it affect the rest of their mission during Rogue Nation? This one is a good exploration of the Ethan x Benji d/s dynamic, highly recommend. 

Ten-hut by Frodo_lives (Benji x Ethan) Rating: E Hey are you into men in uniform? Me too! This one is an established relationship fic, and it really explores the emotional dynamics of Benji and Ethan’s relationship. I especially love how Ethan is characterized in this story.

Le Vent Nous Emportera by @threeoaksy (Benji x Ethan) Rating: T Oaksy always manages to make me cry with her writing. If you want angst & hurt/comfort this fic is for you. It’s very beautifully written and I cried so many tears when I read it. 

Until the End of Their Time by @rochc93 (Benji x Ethan) Rating: G A good old fake relationship story. This one is very soft and sweet I think more people should read it.  Wrong In The Dark by @not-too-tall-for-trick (Benji x Ethan)  Rating: E  A very fun take on the Confined in a Tight Space trope. I’ve read this multiple times and it still doesn’t get old.  FMK by @fictionallemons (Benji x Ethan)  Rating: E  Fictionallemons always manages to write some of my favorite benthan fics ever this one is cute and funny and all around a nice read.  (I’ll also recommend Sweeter Than Candy by this author, which i’ve previously recommended)

I will be there for you. Always. by @maverickcalf (Maverick & Rooster)  Rating: G A simple story about Maverick and Rooster post TGM. It focuses on their father son relationship and it makes me very emo.  Moving in Slow Motion by @boasamishipper (Iceman x Maverick) Rating: E “The reservation is supposed to hold the room,” Maverick says. Viper looks like he’s refraining from laughing with great difficulty. “That’s why you have the reservation. How do you run out of rooms?”“I know why we have reservations, sir,” the receptionist says, and just as Maverick is about to snap back No I don’t actually think you do, another man shows up behind the desk, smiling placidly at them.”  I’m going to hope that passage made you laugh as much as it made me laugh.  i don't know what you've been told by @boasamishipper (Hangman x Coyote) (Iceman x Maverick)  Rating: E This fic is so heartfelt and funny and all around such a wonderful read. I teared up, I laughed and I gasped.  It Was Aliens All Along by @slimysuckers  (Iceman x Maverick)  Rating: T Ending this list with more of a silly one, although still very heartfelt. Inspired by the take that the villains in TGM could have been aliens for all that we knew.

3 and 24!

Fic ask game 3: Do you have any upcoming WIPs? How far along are you with them? Several! I am working on three multi chapter top gun fics that are already part way up {Hometown Skies, The Distinguished Academy, An Unignorable Feeling} three top gun that aren't posted in any form, one of which is a sequel to TDA {a time loop au}. Two Mission Impossible fics (trans Ethan and another one) A fic for The Firm One Tombstone fic (although there will be another in the works soon)

TEN! This isn't counting aus I am sitting on.

As for how far along I am? I would say not very. The sequel for TDA has like the most work done but I might end up changing a lot.

24: Which fic of yours do you wish people would ask about more? Why?

Honestly at the moment I really want to talk about Solitaire (my friendship fic about Iceman and Slider) I really just like it? But it is hard to sell folks on a non romance fic but it is also one of the few fics that focus on the friendship between Slider and Iceman. Look i just love their friendship/ brotherhood thing they have going on.

See Oaksy, friend, my friend. You never give me any guidelines and I always worry that I am not giving you what you want or have interest in. It was then I realized you might just like my writing no matter the ship. lol

Anyway here is some Brian/Doug from Cocktail. LOL

40."This is the third time this week..."

It wasn't until the sun had risen that Doug manged to slip out of work. A shift he had to handle all on his own, something he wasn't happy about.

He had called Brian's number five times. He got machine each time, by the third call he was worried and by the last one he knew he couldn't try anymore because it was making his hands shake.

He was worried. The other times he had picked up on the third call at the latest. But now he wasn't answering at all? Doug wanted to be mad but, at this point he was too worried.

This was becoming a bad habit from Brian, skipping work, this time not even coming up with an excuse, not even answering the damn phone.

Doug pounded on the door loudly, "Flanagan! Open this door!" Okay, maybe he was a little mad. Still there was no sound from the other side of the door. That's when he tried the handle and-

It was open.

Shit.

"Flanagan?" Trying to keep the worry out of his voice and failing spectacularly.

He walked over to the bedroom door, which was wide open. The bed was clearly slept in and he blankets were Brian shaped. Doug sighed, "This is the third time this week..."

The shape curled in on himself. Doug frowned, "Are you sick?"

The shape shook from side to side.

No.

But there were no words. Doug thought for a moment, leaning on the door frame, before offering, "Hangover?"

"Go away."

"Fat chance." Doug said making his way over. At least it was an answer. "What's with you?"

"Like you care..." Something about Brian's tone made Doug stop in his tracks, his tone and something else.

"Oh, so you are in middle of drinking huh?" Doug said looking over at his bed and spotted a few glasses. Had Brian mixed those himself?

Suddenly Brian was standing in front of him. Doug almost leapt a foot backwards, he had been so quiet. "Like you care." Brian repeated and now it was clear to Doug that he wasn't sober. He was swaying side to side, his breath stank of booze and his eyes were slightly out of focus. Or wait was he-

"Flanagan?" Doug asked quietly.

Brian sniffed, "You don't care, if you cared we would have talked about it."

It. It being the night he had spent together a few weeks ago. Honestly there was a part of him that hoped that Brian had forgotten about it. But clearly he didn't. Shit. "Brian." Brian was shaking, tears running down his face. Yeah. Yeah. Ignoring this wasn't going to work. Brian had fallen apart over this, god he broke him. Fuck.

Doug didn't know why he wrapped his arms around Brian. He didn't know why he ran his fingers through Brian's hair. He didn't know why he kissed the top of his head. He didn't know why he gently whispered into his ear that he cared until the tears stopped. He didn't know why he held him until he fell asleep in his arms.

Well maybe he did know, and now Brian knew too.

when I started shipping it if I did: so first of all, in august 2020 i saw @threeoaksy mention offhandedly in the tags of a graphic of les and rob in tropic thunder that she ships it. i went. huh. that's cool. i can see it i guess. and then fast forward 5 months to january 2021, the ship was mentioned again, and i dived into the deep end of that ship with her. and then i developed an obsession with bill hader, which led to me starting barry the show two weeks later. and then. after i finished both seasons in two days and lost my mind over it. i slipped into oaksy's dms like HEY I HAVE THIS WILD IDEA BUT HEAR ME OUT. and we've been in the trenches of this ship ever since

my thoughts: I LOVE THEM. they are. so incredibly important to me. i love everything Oaksy and I have created for them, and we might be a tad too protective of the version of them we've built up in our heads. but! they're ours and we love them. and getting to talk about them with Oaksy is the best time anyone can ask for.

What makes me happy about them: they're just so good. i want barry to be happy and somehow, he fits in with rob and les perfectly. i love that they can be amoral together. it's very fun to write them and their dynamic. i just! love them so much!

What makes me sad about them: i will likely only ever be able to read content about them by writing about them myself with oaksy.

things done in fanfic that annoys me: THERE ARE NONE FICS

things I look for in fanfic: lol WHAT FICS

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: there's still a lot of potential for show!barry to end up with someone from his show, whenever seasons 3 and 4 come out. as for rob and les...no. they're made for each other.

My happily ever after for them: rob and les as the hollywood producer power couple while barry gets to live out his dreams as an actor without fear of his past catching up with him and they all go home together and cuddle together with their three cats

who is the big spoon/little spoon: they always alternate but les and barry both prefer to be the big spoon. rob is very thrilled by this.

what is their favorite non-sexual activity: rob and les love showing barry movies he's never seen before. there are. a lot.

1. favorite fic you wrote this year

oh, it has to be sin city's cold and empty, written with @threeoaksy. i dare say it's the fic i'm most proud of as well.

3. favorite line/scene you wrote this year

this has never been shared outside of a handful of my friends, but oaksy and i built and planned out an entire, separate au for RBL that we also wrote bits of together on and off, and i still think it this part is something i'm very proud of:

Les sees Rob's left hand reach for the railing half a second before it makes contact, and countless mornings of watching Rob struggling to barely hold on to a coffee mug with that same hand come flashing across his mind.

His body is moving forward before his brain can process why. He sees Rob's eyes snap open in shock as his hand gives out, and then he's looking right at Les, face full of panic, and his right hand reaches out to him as he falls.

Later, Les will wonder what that half a second might have cost them.

Right now, right then, he can only gasp in relief when he manages to close his fingers around Rob's wrist and stop his descent into the frigid water below.

But the relief is gone the next second. He's barely holding on to Rob as it is, and his other hand that had instinctively grabbed hold of the railing is losing strength way too fast. Fuck. Either he lets Rob go or he falls with him, and the one thing Les knows is that he will never do the former.

He meets Rob's eyes again, and hates that he can see in the terror on his face that Rob had reached the same conclusion as he had.

"Les-"

"No!" Les grounds out between clenched teeth. He won't let Rob say it. He won't do it. Not a fucking chance. If he has to fall with Rob, then so be it.

Just before Les loses grip on the railing, a pair of familiar arms, much stronger and longer than his own, reaches over him and grabs hold of Rob.

12. favorite character to write about this year

listen. i've written nothing but RBL this year. i love our boys so much. whenever i'm writing one of them i'll miss writing the other two. and even tho Les is a little bit harder for me to write i thoroughly enjoy writing him.

15. something you learned this year

i THRIVE when i write in tandem with someone else. i don't know what this means about my inability to write anything on my own, but i rather enjoy working with other people.

19. any new fics to start next year

i would hope that we'll have more rbl cooked up to unleash into the wild 👀

THANK YOU, i actually made this six months ago but was too scared to use it anywhere, before oaksy and i created our two-person rbl server and made it the icon for the whole server, and then i sneakily snuck it into my old desktop theme that's only visible on desktop

i thought it was about time that i used it somewhere everyone can see it :laugh:
