Bet my heart - Jeongin x y/n
Plot : Childhood bestfriends to lovers (Fluff)
Warnings : None
Words count : 2k
○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○○
*incoming call from : Innie❤️‍🩹"
Y/n : "Hi."
Jeongin : "Hi. Same place?"
Y/n : "Yeah..."
Jeongin : "I'll be there in 5 minutes. Wait for me."
*call ended*
Another shitty date. At this point didn't know why I continued trying. Maybe the love of my life was already dead. Maybe I was destined to be alone all my life.
The only thing that kept me at ease was that I'm not the only one I knew who didn't have luck with dating.
My childhood bestfriend Jeongin was in the same situation.
At the age of 22 and with a not so great past lovers experience, we both decided to start dating again that summer.
We downloaded a dating app and decided to go from there, thinking we would find a partner.
But with no luck.
The only good thing was that we could laugh about our terrible experiences.
We would sit on the floor in our living room , cocktails in our hands, and we would talk and talk 'till late night.
I could write a book about what happened in just 3 months...from people who wanted to get married on the second date , to finding out the person I was having a date with was cheating on his wife with me. What a crazy summer that was.
But the fun part was only a small percentage at that point. The things I was feeling the most were exhaustion and disappointment.
And that night, it showed the most.
After another failure date, I started heading back home. But after 10 meters it started to rain. So my only option was to call my bestfriend Jeongin to come pick me up.
Usually I walked the small distance that divided our apartment from the small Pizzeria where I was used to set my dates; so I could just breathe and get every bad feeling away before arriving home.
I never showed Jeongin that part of the process...the tears and the heavy feelings after a date...I don't really know why.
"Hey" a voice woke me up from my thoughts.
I raised my head and found Jeongin in front of me. He was sitting in the car, passenger window down, while he gestured to hurry up and get inside the car.
I got up from the bus stop's bench and got in the car.
"Thank you for coming" I said while smiling lightly.
"No problem...you know I'm always here for you" he responded giving me a big smile.
He turned on the car and we headed home.
The car ride was silent. I was glad he knew me so well. He sensed that silence was what I needed in that moment.
Once inside the apartment he asked me
"How did it go? Bad again?"
"What do you think?" I said.
He hugged me.
"Do you wanna talk about it?"
I nodded.
We sat on the couch.
"I think I'm ready to give up Innie...I don't know why I continued after so many failures" I sighed.
"I feel you...maybe it's not the right time" he said " What was it with this one that you didn't like?"
I sighed again.
"I don't know...I lost interest in everyone...he was okay, he looked good,he treated me really well. But I just couldn't set a second date. The thought of it made me nauseous. I don't know...just...I think that was my last date"
He took my hands in his, the warm feeling of his hands made me relax immediately.
"Don't call me crazy" he started saying " can we try one thing?"
"What?" I asked.
"What about we go to our last date, maybe it would be the one, and if it's not...uhm...maybe we can try dating each other" he said looking at our hands that were still intertwined.
"Wait. What? Are you for real?" I gasped.
"Yes...I mean...I don't know...many people promise to date each other if they can't find a partner in a certain amount of time...maybe we can try too" he said.
I let go of his hands and got into a more comfortable position to look at him better.
From the look in his face I couldn't tell of he had feelings for me. Maybe that was the reason for such a weird request. And I never thought of him that way. But something inside of me was saying to give it a go, so I said
"Okay...deal. If the next date it's a failure too, we can try what you suggested".
"Then it's a deal" he responded putting is pinkie up in the air to make a promise. I intertwined my pinkie with his while looking at him straight into his eyes. And I don't know why, but my heart skipped a beat.
"Ehm...goodnight Innie" I said rapidly while walking to my room.
Why my heart was racing? Was him the reason why I couldn't date anybody? Was I in love with my bestfriend?
Those questions tortured me for the rest of the night and even the days after.
[A week later]
"Are you ready for the date?" Jeongin asked while putting on his shoes.
"Yeah...uhm...keys,phone,wallet" I starded listing "Yes I got everything" i said nervously.
I was super nervous, more than ever. And I knew it was for that stupid promise. Secretly I wished for the dates to be bad so I could discover if Jeongin was the reason behind all of this failures. If I was really in love with him and didn't realise it.
A couple of minutes later we were in the car. Jeongin was gonna drop me off at the restaurant and then he would go to his date. We had decided to set our dates the same day , so once it was over we could talk about how it went immediately after.
"We've arrived at your destination miss" he said giggling.
I slapped his arm jokingly.
"Thank you my personal uber" I laughed.
Then silence fell beetween us. I was playing nervously with my fingers.
"Well...Good luck y/n" he smiled lightly.
"Good luck Innie" I said while opening the car door and getting out of the car.
A few seconds later I heard him driving away. My breath was shaking and a knot formed in my stomach.
While heading inside the restaurant I thought so many times to just go back home and lie about actually going to the date. But then I thought, what if his date was going to go well? How would I feel about that?
Ugh...my head was exploding.
[1 hour later]
I couldn't eat. The knot in my stomach was getting bigger.
I faked an emergency with my date and I went back home.
The guy was really nice, nice face, nice body, nice personality...but it wasn't him.
Him. Him. Him.
He was the only thing I could think about.
Damn it.
How did I never noticed?
Maybe I was just scared to admit it to myself. We were best friend since we were 2. We were basically like brother and sister. How could've that happen?
In just a week those feelings were out of control. Of course I tried to not show that to him. Deep down I wished he would've feel the same.
Once home I sunk into the couch looking constantly at the clock.
"When are you coming back" I whispered.
[ Around midnight ]
My phone vibrated , it was a message.
Innie ❤️‍🩹 : "How is it going?"
Y/n : "I'm already home"
Innie ❤️‍🩹 : This early?
Y/n : Yess
No response.
5 minutes later the sound keys took me back to reality.I was in the same position for what is felt like an eternity.
Jeongin opened the door and he looked for me in the dem lighting of the room. When I found me , he walked towards my direction.
He was smiling.Meaning his date went well.
My heart sunk.
"Hey" he whispered.
"Hey" I whispered back.
He sat next to me.
"So, why home so early?" He asked.
"I can ask you the same thing" I mumbled.
"Mmh...she had to go" he simply said.
"Yeah...him too" I said distracted.
"How did it go?" He asked.
"Normal things...Nice guy..." I said.
"But?" He continued.
"Uhm...but I wasn't interested" I blurted out.
"Mhm...I see" He said nodding.
"What about yours?" I asked.
"It went great" he responded.
My heart sunk for the second time that night.
"Oh..." I whispered.
That was the only sound that my mouth led out before running to my room while tears flooded my eyes.
I knew it.
I shouldn't have agreed to that promise.
I realised that I had bet my heart on him. And now it felt like my heart stopped beating.
I laid in my bed, tears running down my face, and not even a minute later he was knocking at my door.
"Y/n...can I come in?"
I didn't respond.
"Hey. Please let me in" he begged.
My sighs were becoming louder even If I was trying to hide them.
"I'm coming in...if you don't want me there you can always kick me out" he said while opening the door.
I continued crying. I couldn't stop. And him hugging me just worsened it.
"Shh, don't cry. What happened? You can tell me everything" he said in a loving tone.
"No I can't" I said
"Yes you do. Tell me everything that's on your mind right now. I can't bare to see you like that" he stroked my head.
I sat up, looking at him in the eyes.
"Why did you come up with the promise? You knew your date was going to go well. Now I have feeling for you and you are gonna get a new girlfriend. Why did you do that to me?" I said while crying.
"Did i ever say that it went well in that way?" He asked calmly "Did i say I'm going to go on a second date with that girl?"
I shook my head.
"Yes, the date went well. She was really nice" I sobbed " But I told her that I already made up my mind on someone else" he said.
"Who?" I whispered.
"You." He said.
I stopped crying.
"What do you mean?" I was confused.
"There was a reason why I wanted to make that promise with you. I didn't think it through properly but I had to propose that to you. Through this summer I slowly realised that I had feelings for you. But I think you realised it just lately." He explained.
I nodded.
"I actually didn't know If your date would've went well what I would do. I just hoped it didn't...sorry" he admitted.
I giggled.
"Don't be sorry...I kinda wished the same"
He laughed.
"So...are you mad at me?" He asked
I shook my head, while I reached his hand and hold it in mine playing with is fingers.
He grabbed my waist and put me on top of him. Then he placed his hand gently behind my head.
He kissed me. It was the best sensation ever. We kissed softly, smiling in between kisses. I put my arms on his shoulders, crossing them to pull him even closer. Now pecking his lips, nose, cheeks, forehead and again his lips. He was giggling. I swear I could listen to him laugh all day long without getting tired of it.
When we stopped I said: "I'm glad I bet my heart on you" He pecked my lips.
"And I'm glad that we are finally together" he said.
Lowering his head and resting it on my shoulder he whispered: "I know it's early...but...I love you"
"I love you too Innie" I responded.
We laid down on my bed. My head on top of his chest. Our hearts were beating like crazy.
I couldn't wait to be with my bestfriend for the rest of my life.

Teenage Gambling At Post Prom High School Party
Tumblr media
The modern trend to hit high schools is supervised teenage gambling at the Post Prom School Party. Over the past few months There are received numerous emails from parents, students and classes faculty expressing concern about the new alternative entertainment. In all of the cases these people believe it would do more harm then excellent.
The concept became reality for students once the Post Prom Panel voted to accept this new alternative entertainment. This Post Prom Committee believes this is safe night party for the Graduating high school prom. The students who are taking part are between the ages connected with sixteen and eighteen years old. Each student is able to invest in fake money to gamble with and at the end with the night they can trade this money in for prizes having at the end of the night. Some parents believe this is a safe terrific event for their children. While others believe this is one area many people prefer their kids not be involved with.
One of the emails My partner and i received was from a family who home schools their five children. I was surprised since their kids wasn't involved. She had explained to me that her little princess who is seventeen has friends who attend the public education system. She went on to tell me the negative actions exhibited by these teens after the event took place. The fact is they taught her daughter how to play black prise and poker. This is a good neighborhood that has strong community jewelry. She also informed me that she not see the difference between using fake money or real money when you still have a chance to win a prize that has value. She states these teens are being educated on how to gamble, win in addition to take the easy way out.
People in favor of this gambling event, nicely told those who were against it to have their own teenager’s stay home. It was my understanding the post prom get-togethers were supposed to be for everyone.
It surprised me that a the school district finds gambling night an acceptable behavior for our youngsters.
I have seen first hand the self destruction gambling are capable of doing to teenagers and adults. It’s my belief this gambling should be limited to people who are eighteen and over.
Another email address was asking me for the specific statistics on the adverse impact on a teenager’s who attend a gambling occasion. General statistics reflect a percentage of those in attendance will develop a compulsive gambling addiction. Some of these same students may become addicted at some point in their life. I have found that addictions to gambling are not age sensitive. People of any age that happen to be gambling for the very first time can develop a gambling addiction. Commonly a friend or family member takes them to the gambling business. I first found it difficult to understand how a person who is definitely sixty five retired and on a fixed income gets enslaved by gambling. The seniors I spoke with were very upset and didn’t understand how this happened to them. Often the unfortunate part is they lost their pensions and now only have their Social Security to live on. In one scenario the Grandmother has to move in with her daughter.
There is little or no difference between supervised gambling and allowing supervised having alcoholic beverages or serving the students there choice of dugs for a silver platter. If a Principal served a student an psychoneurotic drink he would be arrested. I am trying to understand how class educators and parents can distinguish between alcohol and betting on school property. How is one more acceptable then other?
Studies have shown that there is a correlation between booze addiction and gambling addiction. The correlation was determined by individuals who attend both Gamblers Anonymous and Alcoholics Nameless meetings.
It would be a shame to find out ten years from ever since students who took part in supervised gambling within the High School level their future was compromised by a lifetime of self destruction and low self esteem.
It’s a tested statistics that students who gamble get a similar dash off to as if they just had an alcoholic beverage. The only distinction here they will not wake up with a hang over and the side side effects are minimal until it’s too late.
We have now given all of our students another option in life. The major concern is the student’s definitely will like the rush from gambling a lot more then alcohol as well as drugs since there is no hang over or smell. Some learners are likely to continue gambling. Students with A grades are not exempt from this. Statistics show that compulsive teenage gamblers are also really bright and articulate individuals.
People need to be educated with teenage gambling and its long term affects. It’s illegal in order to gamble if you are under 18. It’s also illegal enjoy if you are under 18 (some places 21) and it is very illegal to smoke cigarettes if you are under 18. These legal guidelines were set for a reason. Another email I gotten wanted to know do these school systems have any admiration for the Law?
I emailed each of the people and expected why haven’t they raised their concerns to the school board? They all responded the same. “We are the minority and today we look bad in front of our kids. ” This is truly a not any win situation.

Heat (Part 1)
Tumblr media

Rings goes into an intense heat and decides to isolate herself to prevent conceiving a child, whereas Ebert goes on a quest to find rare components to create a stronger contraceptive for her. Commissioned by @ocsmutpocalypse!
Tumblr media
Rings had been acting weird. More weird than normal. And her normal weirdness was… pretty weird, by anyone’s standards. She spent a lot of time camping in the woods and snapped at anyone who came near her, including Ebert, Reverence, and her sister. Buttons couldn’t be in the same room as Rings, hissing and spitting at her before scrabbling for the door in a frothing rage.
Ebert hadn’t realized the change in her behavior at first, since Ethrik was a year and a half old, and Ebert’s second child had just been born a few months before, which took up all his attention. The child was like Reverence in that they were between genders and were not old enough to decide which gender they most identified with. Ebert and Reverence decided to name them Evo, short for “evolving,” and figured that they could change their name when they were old enough to choose.
So it was a few days before Ebert noticed her odd behavior and pointed it out to Reverence.
“Ah,” Reverence said, breastfeeding Evo. “Maybe she’s in heat.”
“Heat?” Ebert said, confused. “She’s never gone into heat before.”
“Well, not since you’ve been here, but that’s only been two years. It’s happened twice before, and they were random. Her sister says that Rings normally takes some sort of suppressant which works well enough typically, but every once in a while, the urge gets too strong and her body rebels against her.”
“Huh,” Ebert said. “Well, she takes the birth control medicine that I make, so she should be alright, right?”
Reverence shook her head, patting Evo’s bottom as they suckled. “Biological imperative in her species can be pretty strong, and no birth control is 100% effective. Rings hates the idea of having children more than anything, so the possibility that she might conceive is something she simply cannot tolerate. It’s why she normally secluded herself during her heats. Which is unfortunate for her. The last one was two months long. She came back in very poor shape; it took weeks for her to recover.”
Ebert frowned. “That’s disconcerting. Can nothing be done to help her?”
“According to Spring, if she copulates, the heat passes in a matter of days, but Rings won’t risk it. The idea of motherhood repulses her.”
“I know that all too well,” Ebert said. “I’m going to go to the cottage and see if I can work on something for her. I don’t like the idea of her being isolated for two months, especially since winter is coming soon.”
Reverence nodded and kissed him goodbye, and Ebert trekked into the woods and to the cottage where he did is magical work. As he was walking up, he heard glass break inside the cottage.
Taking out a short sword he’d been given and preparing a fireball, he called out, “Declare yourself!”
“Fuck off!” He heard in response, Rings’ annoyed voice loud enough to rattle the windows in the frame.
“Rings?” He said, dropping his sword and letting the fireball spell fizzle out in disbelief. “What the hell are you doing in there? What did you break?”
“Who cares? Go away!”
“I need my workspace!” Ebert said, putting the key in the door, but it refused to open. He had a feeling Rings was sitting in front of the door. “Reverence told me you’re in heat! I’m going to try and make a new contraceptive for you!”
“What do you know?” Rings yelled, banging against the door as he pushed on it. “Go ask Cassandra! She knows more about herbs and medicine than you do, you quack!”
Ebert grimaced, but he knew she wasn’t wrong. Cassandra was an aasimar and alumnus from his old academy, one who actually graduated and hadn’t committed a crime against nature, like he had. She and her lover had settled in the village less than a month previous.
Her specialty was prophecy and soothsaying, but she was also well versed in magical medicine and herbalism. Ebert was a good physician, but he wasn’t much of an apothecary He’d deferred to her expertise on several occasions, including the production of the original contraceptive. He was lucky she was more interested in working as a fortune teller and not as a medicine maker, or she could have taken half his business, if she’d had a mind to it.
“Yeah, I love you, too!” Ebert retorted, stalking off.
Cassandra lived with her lover, a minotaur named Bigby, near the temple and she did a lot of her business with the visitors. Getting your fortune told right outside of the temple was lucrative for both parties, so Reverence had allowed it as long as Cassandra agreed to support the temple and donate a small percentage of her earnings to the temple every month. Despite being a holy woman who lived a modest life in a small, two room house, Reverence was remarkably business savvy at times.
On the other hand, Bigby loved kids, and he often babysat for the villagers when they made their trips to the temple for a small fee. It was a good way to earn himself income and keep the littler tots out of trouble while their parents did their worshiping, so everyone got something out of the deal.
Cassandra was sitting at a booth that she had set up at the feet of Fysy’s statue outside of the temple. She was in the process of giving a reading to a parishioner, so Ebert waited awkwardly a small distance away for her to finish before approaching.
“Hello, necromancer,” Cassandra said pleasantly, her dark skin shining like bronze in the sunlight. “I’ve been waiting for you to come and see me. You certainly take your sweet time. I was wondering if I’d have to come and seek you out instead.”
“Yes, well,” Ebert said. “Rings is in heat.”
“I know,” She said, smugly magnanimous. “You’ve come to get medicinal advice, yes?”
“I suppose so,” Ebert admitted. “Rings and Reverence implied that the current contraceptive recipe will not be enough to override her body’s biological imperative. I need something stronger.”
“The recipe you have is pretty strong,” Cassandra said. “It would work for most mortal beings. Though, I will admit that Tabaxi bodies are very hardy and can expel most poisons with no effect to themselves. It’s no wonder that a normal recipe wouldn’t work for them.” She rubbed her chin. “There are a few herbs I know of that are effective. Bloodwort is one, and the bark of the red cedar is another. Bloodwort isn’t too hard to find, but red cedar isn’t native to this region. To find it, you’ll have to travel northwest for at least a week.” She stood up and came around the table, motioning to him to follow her. “Come.”
She led him to her home, where Bigby was chasing a passel of children around in the yard, pausing momentarily to raise a hand in greeting only to be set upon by many tiny hands, pushing him on his stomach and piling on.
“Here,” Cassandra said, pulling down a book. “This is a picture of the herbs I mentioned. When you find them, combine it with fennel seed, chasteberry, raspberry leaf, thistle, and red clover flowers. Boil on a low setting in clear water for at least three days, and add the decotion to a berry wine. Three tablespoons per day until the next cycle starts.”
Ebert pulled out his notebook and began to draw copies of each of the plants, writing down the recipe underneath the sketches.
“There’s an unusual symptom of this decotion, however,” Cassandra continued. “It doesn’t happen in humans, but in beastfolk, like tabaxis, it can cause an increase in sex drive. It’s still effective as a contraceptive in beastfolk, but it forces them to experience the worst of the heat in order to surpass it. I’d advise you to discuss it with Rings before making the trip. She may not appreciate the side effects.”
“I’ll do that,” Ebert said. “Although… Rings is usually my partner on these types of trips… I can’t imagine--”
“Going alone?” Cassandra said, finishing his sentence. “Then don’t. Certainly, Rings is a capable woman, but she’s not the only one. Her sister is also quite capable, and she would understand the urgency, especially considering she’s gone through a heat herself.”
“That’s true,” Ebert said. “I’ll ask Rings. Thanks, Cass.”
“It’s no trouble,” Cassandra replied pleasantly. “Give the children a kiss for me.”
Ebert waved and set off back to the cabin.
“Rings,” He said once he returned. Rings was still sitting against the door and refused to let him inside. “I spoke to Cassandra. I have to take a trip to get the ingredients she told me about. I’ll be gone for a few weeks.”
“Okay,” She said. She sounded much more subdued than normal.
“Listen,” Ebert started, sitting awkwardly on the steps. “Cassandra said that the herbs have a strange side effect on beast people. It forces them to the peak of their heat and makes them more… needy. The heat passes faster, but… the urge to… procreate… gets stronger. Uncontrollable. I just wanted to be sure it’s something you’re willing to deal with.”
“I don’t know,” She said after a moment. “If that’s the case… Will you and Reverence shelter with me until it’s over? If I’m going to end up in the family way… I’d prefer it if the kid belonged to you or her. I trust the two of you more than anyone else. I know me; it’s just not in me to be a parent. I won’t care for the kid. But you two will. And that’s good enough for me.”
“We can do that,” Ebert said. “I’m sure Reverence would agree. I’ll discuss it with her before I leave, to be sure. I’m going to see if Spring will accompany me on this trip. She understands this better than me, after all.”
“That’ll be good,” Rings agreed. “She hasn’t been out of the village since we came here.” Ebert heard her laugh. “Make sure Flicker doesn’t get the wrong idea. Unless you’re planning on seducing Springs on the trip.”
“Gross. I’m not into sisters, thanks. And Flicker could rip me in half, so I’m not risking it.”
Flickering Flame was a Bengal tiger tabaxi soldier from a far off desert country and was in a relationship with Spring. He worked as a guard, protecting the village from hostile outsiders. Though Spring was monogamous and had chosen not to follow Fysy, Flicker was a disciple of Fysy and worshiped at the temple, an arrangement they had agreed on when they decided to become engaged.
“Yeah, that’s true. He would rip you in half. It would be funny,” Rings said, laughing in a subdued way.
“Are you okay?” Ebert asked in concern.
She sighed. “I’m anxious. I’m never anxious, and I hate it. And I’ve never had to worry about who I had sex with or when. I don’t feel like myself and I don’t like it.”
“We’re going to fix it,” Ebert said softly. “Even if I have to go alone. As fun as it is to see you squirm… I miss you. The real you.”
“I miss me, too,” She said. “When are you leaving?”
“As soon as I talk to Spring,” He replied. “Probably tomorrow morning. I don’t want to delay too long.”
Reverence is okay with it?” She asked.
“I haven’t talked to her yet, but I don’t imagine she’d be opposed to it. She’s not exactly restrictive or controlling.”
“True. And she can’t leave the village. She hasn’t set foot outside of the town’s boundary since she became the priestess decades ago.”
“I keep meaning to ask her the story behind that, but I’ve never had the opportunity. I heard she came from some place far away. I wonder how she ended up here.”
“I’ve never heard the full story, either,” Rings said. “Let’s ask her when you get back. It seems the three of us will be spending several days together, after all.”
Ebert struggled to his feet and brushed off his trouser. “I’m going to get going. I want to make arrangements before sundown.”
“Hey.”
“What?”
A heartbeat of time passed before she said, in a very quiet voice. “Be safe, okay? Don’t get killed, or I’ll be very angry with you.”
“I’ll keep that in mind,” He said, chuckling.
“I’m serious,” She said, banging the door. “You’re useless without me.”
Ebert began to set off down the trail. “Don’t forget to eat.”
It didn’t take much to convince Spring to go with Ebert on his sojourn. She asked Bigby to look after Candle until she returned, and Bigby was happy to comply. Ebert also discussed having Bigby watch his tots when he returned and sheltered with Rings during her heat, and he was amiable.
Reverence was sympathetic to Ring’s plight and immediately agreed to help, offering to go to Rings at the cabin while Ebert was gone and satisfy her in ways that didn’t lead to children in the meantime. It wouldn’t be enough to end her heat, but it would keep her from losing her senses in the midst of an uncontrollable influx of hormones.

Spring met Ebert outside of her house the next morning wearing a practical traveling outfit with a sword strapped to her back.
“I wasn’t aware you owned a sword,” Ebert said, impressed.
“It’s Flicker’s,” She said. “I’m just borrowing it. I’m only glad he had one that suited a person my size. Of course, he calls it a letter opener.”
Ebert snorted. “You’re ready, then?”
“Yeah,” She replied, hitching up her pack. “We should follow the river until we hit open terrain. I’m familiar with the smell of red cedar, so finding it shouldn’t be as difficult as it would be without a tracker.”
“That’s definitely useful. Have you said farewell to Rings?”
“No, but I don’t think she’d welcome my company at the moment. I’ll greet her when we return.”
Fair enough. “Let’s head out.”
Traveling with Spring wasn’t as awkward or unpleasant as Ebert worried it could have been, especially considering the two of them weren’t necessarily close, despite his having lived in the village for several years by this point. The only time they really spoke was when he accompanied Rings or Reverence to dinner at Spring’s house.
He discovered that Spring was a good conversationalist and knew a lot about wilderness survival techniques, perhaps even more than Rings, which was reassuring, because Ebert knew fuck all about that.
Though she reminded Ebert of Rings in a number of ways, she was more even-keel and mellow-tempered than her sister. Whatever affection he might have developed for her during their trek, it definitely wasn’t attraction. More like a close friend or sibling, which actually relieved him. He hadn’t been close to any of his siblings, so having a familial relationship with someone was both unfamiliar and refreshing.
“The air is getting colder,” Spring said, pulling her scarf around her more tightly as they walked. “Another day, and we should be in the right area.”
“Great,” Ebert said in relief. “I hate camping.”
Spring snorted. “Yeah, I kinda figured. You do most of your grumbling right before bed.”
“I don’t mean to grumble,” He said, slightly embarrassed.
Spring laughed again. “You do it mostly under your breath, but I have good hearing.” Her feline ears flicked back and forth. “I honestly find it rather amusing. You remind me of Candle sometimes.”
“...thanks?”
“I just mean you like things a certain way. Candle is like that, too.” She hacked a branch out of her way. “Most children are.”
“Insinuating that I behave like a child?”
“I don’t mean it in a negative way. Rings is very similar. I think it’s just a side effect of not having a very good childhood. Rings hasn’t told me much about your childhood, but it’s easy enough to assume that it wasn’t a happy one, and you already know hers was terrible.”
“That’s true,” He admitted.
“We all need certain things when we’re children, chief among them is attention,” She said pensively. “Children grumble and gripe and make a fuss, and it seems irritating, but what they’re really asking for is attention. If you don’t get enough when you’re young, you grow up desperate for it. Rings acts out because she likes attention. I don’t think you necessarily want people to pay attention to you, but I think you do want people to listen. If you didn’t, I think you wouldn’t grumble out loud. People only make noise when they want someone to hear it, after all.”
“What are you, a philosopher?” Ebert laughed.
“Aren’t all mothers?” Spring replied, laughing herself.
The next day, as they were trekking near a treeline, Spring stopped and sniffed the air.
“I smell bloodroot,” She said. “It’s not far away. A few hundred meters, maybe.”
“Any whiff of red cedar yet?”
“No, but it likely won’t be long now. Bloodroot and red cedar are native to the same region.”
“Well, let’s collect as much as we can carry while we’re here. I don’t want to have to make another trip any time soon.”
They spent most of the afternoon plucking bloodroot plants, hoping there were seeds they could sow when they returned to the village. Another few hours travel before nightfall brought them to a grove with red cedar.
“Fucking finally,” Ebert sighed. “I was worried we’d have to travel another day to find this.”
“It is getting late, as it is,” Spring said, looking toward the setting sun. “It’d be best to set up camp now and harvest what we need in the morning.”
“Uuuugh,” Ebert groaned, throwing his head back dramatically, and Spring smiled at him in a fond, maternal sort of way.
Spring set about building a fire pit while Ebert looked for firewood from the nearby brush. He found valuable mushrooms and some lichen that would be useful as components and harvested those while he was at it, then returned to the clearing where they’d made camp.
“It doesn’t smell like rain tonight, which is good. I don’t feel like putting up the tent.”
Ebert groaned. “I don’t like sleeping in the open air.”
“Then you set up the tent,” She retorted.
Ebert’s groan deepened. “It’s not so bad, I guess.”
“That’s what I thought.” She sat down at the newly built fire and put the cooking grate over it, setting a small pot on top of the grate and pouring water into it from her canteen. “Wanna cut up the onions and potatoes for the stew? I still have some jerky left, but I should hunt tomorrow for the trip back.”
“Yeah, sure,” Ebert said with a heavy sigh, settling himself with difficulty on the ground, setting his cane down next to him, and opening the drawstring pouch that contained their food supply. “One each, eh?”
“Yeah, that’s fine,” She said.
“So, has Rings ever gone through heat like this before?” Ebert asked as he peeled the vegetables. “I’ve been meaning to ask, but I keep forgetting. This one seems severe.”
“She’s had a couple of heats since reaching adulthood, but not this bad,” Spring replied, tearing the jerky into small strips and throwing it into the pot. “It’s only as bad as this because Rings isn’t used to suppressing her urges. She’s always been impulsive and opportunistic. If she wants something, whether it’s food, money, sex, or whatever, she either takes it from wherever it’s most readily available or finds someone willing to give it to her, and she never hesitates. It’s why Fysy’s village suits her so well. Ordinarily.”
“True,” Ebert mused. “So stubborn. You’re older than her, right?”
Springs snorted. “By, like, three minutes. We’re from the same litter.”
“You two have such different personalities,” Ebert remarked.
“She’d hate to admit it, but she takes after our parents in temperament. I’m sure that’s one of the reasons she has no interest in having children; she hates the idea of turning out like them. That and she hates kids.”
“Yes,” Ebert replied. “Honestly, so did I, before I met Reverence. I mean, I still hate kids, but I like my kids. I guess I expected to turn out like my family. They were not in any way affectionate or sentimental, and up until Ethrik was born, I was the same way. I’d never have believed being a father was a possibility for me, let alone being a good father or enjoying my time with my children. Life has taken quite the unexpected turn.”
“Do you think Rings should have children, then?”
“Oh, Gods, no,” Ebert laughed. “Granted, I love my children, but I will admit it’s not an experience everyone needs. You know as well as I that suddenly being responsible for a living, breathing life you created is terrifying and not something every person wants to or is capable of handling. Rings is right to think that she wouldn’t raise the kid. She can’t deal with that level of responsibility. Her freedom and autonomy is too important to her, and there’s nothing wrong with that.”
“I agree,” Spring said. “It’s one of the reasons I accepted you invitation to come on this journey. I thought of anyone, you would understand her best and not attempt to sway her opinions or plans for the future. You get her. I appreciate that, as her sister. Not many people do. I’d say even Reverence doesn’t understand Rings as well as you, for all they’ve known each other longer. It’s simply a fundamental difference in their personality.”
“You mean Rings hating kids and Reverence having so many?”
“Not just that,” She mused. “Reverence is the priestess of the goddess of love and fertility. Rings is fine with the first part, not so much the second. Though Rings loves Reverence, their difference in philosophies will always be at odds with each other. That’s why I think you’re good for them. You get them in different ways, and you can mediate if they ever argue.”
“Have they ever argued?” Ebert asked, surprised. “I’ve never witnessed it. Which is strange, because Rings loves to argue.
Spring snickered. “Typically, Rings respects Reverence enough to keep her criticisms to herself, but they had a brief falling out a few years back. Reverence was pregnant, again, and Rings got tired of it.”
“But Reverence never keeps the children, except for mine, and those were special circumstances.”
“Rings didn’t care; she felt like Reverence saw herself as nothing more than a brood mare and had no self-respect. Reverence, on the other hand, feels like making children is her sacred duty, and thus felt as though Rings was insulting her calling in life, and Fysy by extension. The parted ways for almost two months.”
“Oh, gods, it must have been serious,” Ebert said, surprised. “What happened?”
“Rings and I had a discussion about why I decided to keep Candle, even though he was conceived in the throes of an unplanned, unprepared-for heat with a deadbeat, what being a mother means to me specifically, if I wanted more children, that sort of thing. I think it helped her understand Reverence a little better. It’s the one and only time I ever heard of Rings apologizing.”
“I’m glad they made up,” Ebert replied. “I don’t know what my life would be like without both of them, and it’s not a thought I want to entertain.”
Spring smiled fondly. “Me, neither. Reverence is like a sister to me, as well. She gave me and my family a home and helped us start a new life. I owe her a lot.”
“As do I,”  Ebert said softly with a sigh, reaching for a spoon to eat the stew right from the pot. “Let’s eat and go to bed, I’m exhausted. I want to get out of here as early as possible.”
Tumblr media
Now that they had what they needed, the trip home took much less time, and they arrived back within the town proper in five days. He stopped by Reverence’s house, only to find that Bigby was keeping the children, with all of them on the floor passing a leather ball to each other in turn. Tiny little Evo was sandwiched between Bigby’s legs to keep them upright, squealing delightedly when the ball came close only to kick it out of their reach. Buttons sat in the very center, swatting lazily at the ball as it rolled past her.
Ebert realized from Reverence’s absence that she must be keeping Rings company. Spring collected Candle and excused herself, inviting Ebert and the women over for dinner once Rings was back to her old self.
Ebert went out to the cabin that was well away from most of the town, one of the reasons he liked it so much, and heard moaning issuing from inside. Ah. He’d guessed correctly. He reached up and knocked.
“Fuck off!” Rings cried out.
“It’s me! I’m back!”
“I don’t care! Fuck off!”
“I have a key, you know!”Ebert shouted. “I can let myself in at any time, I was just being considerate!”
“Then let yourself in, the fuck if I care!”
Ebert rolled his eyes and sighed. “I can’t work with the two of you going at it. I’ll start the medicine at home. I’ll be at the house when you’re done.”
“Whatever, go away!”
Snorting derisively, Ebert set back off for home.

Why Make a Company Plan?
In many instances company programs are very important but so considerably of the time it is a prepare to attempt to encourage a person else that you know what you are doing with your business like banking institutions, investors, partners, and so on. Now it really is true that a properly composed organization program can also be a key reward to your accomplishment as nicely if accomplished right. It can manual you and hold you on observe and can be the automobile to get you have been you want to be specially with so several outside forces now days that bombard you. A strategy can be really important to your good results specifically when you appear at the stats that claims fifty one% of small firms fall short someday during their 1st five years. So why make a business prepare? I want to show you a completely distinct variety of company program. What if you created a business program that targeted only on what you want for your existence? You have dreams about what you would like your life style to be, right? Why not make a company program that could give you people goals? What would your company seem like if it gave you just what you want in existence. What sort of salary would your organization need to have to give you? Why not construct a organization strategy close to that? Determine how considerably income you would require to help your goals and then create a organization program that would display specifically how your business could give you that. Would not it be much better to have your enterprise perform for you instead of the other way about?Did you at any time quit and believe what a unique place you’re in as a business proprietor? せどり do not know of any other way you can have as much management in excess of your accomplishment than owning a organization. When you operate for someone else, you are absolutely at their mercy as to what your long term could be like. It isn’t going to matter whether it is a personal business you work for or a massive company. Your foreseeable future is in their arms. The only issue that may well qualify other than owning a company would be to inherit or get a great deal of income that would give you every little thing you want in lifestyle. So, why make a organization program the normal way when you could very first make a single that could give you what you want in existence? Have you at any time imagined about performing a strategy like that? Would you know how? Would you have the time to do it?Effectively if you never or not positive, let us at minimum see what’s included.Right here are the actions you would need to have to consider.Very first, you would require to know all your recent company quantities. This will be the basis for the strategy. You’re likely to need to know:one. What your existing regular month-to-month sales are 2. What your current common monthly substance value is 3. What your current average month-to-month labor cost is four. What your existing regular month to month fixed expenses are 5. What your present average month to month variable expenses are 6. What your average number of transactions for each customer for each thirty day period are seven. What your regular greenback sale per transaction is eight. What your typical month to month profit is 9. What your average month to month revenue margin is ten. And what % capacity your company is at correct nowNext, determine what you want your salary to beThird, determine how numerous years in the foreseeable future you want to prepare forFourth, you will need to have to know:one. What % is your content value of revenue? 2. What % is your labor cost of sales? three. And what % is your variable expense of revenue? Why do you want to know these percentages? As your income increases or decreases, your material expense, labor value, and variable costs will keep track of appropriately. They will track really close to the exact same % as your present company. As an instance, let’s say your current product sales is averaging $100,000 per month and your materials expense is averaging $twenty,000 per thirty day period.
That’s 20% of your revenue ($20,000 ÷ $a hundred,000 = 20%). So, what would your materials price be if your sales had been averaging $200,000 for each month? It would still be 20% but it would be 20% of $two hundred,000 or $forty,000. So with these percentages, you can undertaking your material, labor and variable costs. See how it works? But your fixed costs will not do this. They continue to be the exact same no matter what product sales does. That is why it really is call fastened. These are expenses like lease, taxes, utilities, phone, salaries, insurance policy, and many others. A great deal of organization house owners never think about this. They just lump all their expenses collectively. But you could never ever make an exact plan if you mix all your costs collectively. If you undertaking your product sales higher and want to know what your expenditures will be, you have to different your fixed and variable. So, contemplating about this principle, enable me inquire you a issue. If your revenue grew ten% and practically nothing else changed, would your revenue margin be increased, the exact same, or considerably less? Revenue margin is % of profit in opposition to revenueIf you stated the revenue margin would be higher, then you are correct. Why would your profit be larger? If you explained due to the fact of the set expenses, you would be proper. Your materials price, labor expense, and variable costs would have gone up ten% but your fixed bills would have remained the identical. You brought in a lot more income simply because of far more product sales and you put in ten % more on content, labor, and variable expense to protect the additional product sales, but you failed to spend any more on your fastened expenses. So, much less general expenses, would give you increased revenue margin. Make feeling? So, let’s see how we would make a business program that would show precisely how your enterprise could give you the wage you want.Very first you would determine what you would like your wage to be. You have dreamed about getting a great earnings to assist your dreams I’m confident. Let us say right now you only make what your revenue is offering you which may possibly not be much. So let’s say the first year, following calendar year, you would love to have a steady month-to-month salary of $4,000 a thirty day period, every month. And each yr you would like to be ready to improve it so that soon after ten many years it would be at $ten,000 for every month. And let’s say you would like to increase your company 10% each calendar year.

An insurance agent has to ensure that someone else has had their business under the insurance umbrella. While this coverage pays the claim against the at-fault driver, it is important for small business to check if this coverage will have any value. If the person who caused the accident cannot be found, then it may be the owner’s responsibility. In most cases, this isn’t a problem. If the person else that caused the accident did not have this type of insurance and did not have a valid driver’s license, the driver’s license could be canceled for non-payment. Another good option is offering to transfer a policy to the at-fault driver. This is generally done for people who will otherwise no longer be protected. This can often take a considerable amount of time and effort because a person may not be completely clear on the terms and forms of coverage needed, or they may.

He was a member of the Marx Brothers (with Groucho Marx, Harpo Marx, and Zeppo Marx). His persona in the act was that of a charming, uneducated but crafty con artist, seemingly of rural Italian origin, who wore shabby clothes and sported a curly-haired wig and Tyrolean hat. On screen, Chico is often in alliance with Harpo, usually as partners in crime, and is also frequently seen trying to con or outfox Groucho. Leonard was the oldest of the Marx Brothers to live past early childhood (first-born Manfred Marx had died in infancy). In addition to his work as a performer, he played an important role in the management and development of the act in its early years.
Chico was born in Manhattan, New York City, on March 22, 1887. His parents were Sam Marx (called "Frenchie" throughout his life), and his wife, Minnie Schoenberg Marx. Minnie's brother was Al Shean. The Marx family was Franco-German Jewish. His father was a native of Alsace who worked as a tailor and his mother was from East Frisia in Germany.
Billing himself as Chico, he used an Italian persona for his onstage character; stereotyped ethnic characters were common with vaudevillians. His non-Italian-ness was specifically referred to twice on film. In their second feature, Animal Crackers, he recognizes someone he knows to be a fish peddler impersonating a respected art collector:
Ravelli (Chico): "How is it you got to be Roscoe W. Chandler?"
Chandler: "Say, how did you get to be an Italian?"
Ravelli: "Never mind—whose confession is this?"
In A Night at the Opera, which begins in Italy, his character, Fiorello, claims not to be Italian, eliciting a surprised look from Groucho:
Driftwood (Groucho): "Well, things seem to be getting better around the country."
Fiorello (Chico): "I don't know, I'm a stranger here myself."
A scene in the film Go West, in which Chico attempts to placate an Indian chief of whom Groucho has run afoul, has a line that plays a bit on Chico's lack of Italian nationality, but is more or less proper Marxian wordplay:
S. Quentin Quayle (Groucho): "Can you talk Indian?"
Joe Panello (Chico): "I was born in Indianapolis!"
There are moments, however, where Chico's characters appear to be genuinely Italian; examples include the film The Big Store, in which his character Ravelli runs into an old friend he worked with in Naples (after a brief misunderstanding due to his accent), the film Monkey Business, in which Chico claims his grandfather sailed with Christopher Columbus, and their very first outing The Cocoanuts, where Mr. Hammer (Groucho) asks him if he knew what an auction was, in which he responds "I come from Italy on the Atlantic Auction!" Chico's character is often assumed to be dim-witted, as he frequently misunderstands words spoken by other characters (particularly Groucho). However, he often gets the better of the same characters by extorting money from them, either by con or blackmail; again, Groucho is his most frequent target.
Chico was a talented pianist. He originally started playing with only his right hand and fake playing with his left, as his teacher did so herself. Chico eventually acquired a better teacher and learned to play the piano correctly. As a young boy, he gained jobs playing piano to earn money for the Marx family. Sometimes Chico even worked playing in two places at the same time. He would acquire the first job with his piano-playing skills, work for a few nights, and then substitute Harpo on one of the jobs. (During their boyhood, Chico and Harpo looked so much alike that they were often mistaken for each other.)
In the brothers' last film, Love Happy, Chico plays a piano and violin duet with 'Mr. Lyons' (Leon Belasco). Lyons plays some ornate riffs on the violin; Chico comments, "Look-a, Mister Lyons, I know you wanna make a good impression, but please don't-a play better than me!"
In a record album about the Marx Brothers, narrator Gary Owens stated that "although Chico's technique was limited, his repertoire was not." The opposite was true of Harpo, who reportedly could play only two tunes on the piano, which typically thwarted Chico's scam and resulted in both brothers being fired.
Groucho Marx once said that Chico never practiced the pieces he played. Instead, before performances he soaked his fingers in hot water. He was known for 'shooting' the keys of the piano. He played passages with his thumb up and index finger straight, like a gun, as part of the act. Other examples of his keyboard flamboyance are found in A Night at the Opera (1935), where he plays the piano for a group of delighted children, and A Night in Casablanca (1946), where he performs a rendition of "The Beer Barrel Polka".
Chico became the unofficial manager of the Marx Brothers after their mother, Minnie, died in 1929. As manager, he cut a deal to get the brothers a percentage of a film's gross receipts—the first of its kind in Hollywood. Furthermore, it was Chico's connection with Irving Thalberg of Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer that led to Thalberg's signing the Brothers when they were in a career slump after Duck Soup (1933), the last of their films for Paramount.
For a while in the 1930s and 1940s, Chico led a big band. Singer Mel Tormé began his professional career singing with the Chico Marx Orchestra. Through the 1950s, Chico occasionally appeared on a variety of television anthology shows and some television commercials, most memorably with Harpo in "The Incredible Jewelry Robbery", a pantomime episode of General Electric Theater in 1959.
His nickname (acquired during a card game in Chicago in 1915) was originally spelled Chicko. It was changed to Chico but still pronounced "Chick-oh" although those who were unaware of its origin tended to pronounce it "Cheek-oh". Numerous radio recordings from the 1940s exist where announcers and fellow actors mispronounce the nickname, but Chico apparently felt it was unnecessary to correct them. As late as the 1950s, Groucho was happy to use the wrong pronunciation for comedic effect. A guest on You Bet Your Life told the quizmaster she grew up around Chico (California) and Groucho responded, "I grew up around Chico myself. You aren't Gummo, are you?" Groucho is heard in videos pronouncing it "Chicko", as in a Dick Cavett episode with Groucho talking to Dan Rowan.
During Groucho's live performance at Carnegie Hall in 1972, he states that his brother got the name Chico because he was a "chicken-chaser" (early 20th century slang for womanizer).
As well as being a compulsive womanizer, Chico had a lifelong gambling habit. His favorite gambling pursuits were card games, horse racing, dog racing, and various sports betting. His addiction cost him millions of dollars by his own account. When an interviewer in the late 1930s asked him how much money he had lost from gambling, he answered, "Find out how much money Harpo's got. That's how much I've lost." Gummo Marx, in an interview years after Chico's death, said: "Chico's favorite people were actors who gambled, producers who gambled, and women who screwed." Referring to Chico's love life, George Jessel quipped, "Chico didn't button his fly until he was seventy."
Chico's lifelong gambling addiction compelled him to continue in show business long after his brothers had retired in comfort from their Hollywood income, and in the early 1940s he found himself playing in the same small, cheap halls in which he had begun his career 30 years earlier. The Marx Brothers' penultimate film, A Night in Casablanca (1946), was made for Chico's benefit since he had filed for bankruptcy a few years prior. Because of his out-of-control gambling, the brothers finally took the money as he earned it and put him on an allowance, on which he stayed until his death.
Chico had a reputation as a world-class pinochle player, a game he and Harpo learned from their father. Groucho said Chico would throw away good cards (with the knowledge of spectators) to make the play "more interesting". Chico's last public appearance was in 1960, playing cards on the television show Championship Bridge. He and his partner lost the game.
Chico was married twice. His first marriage was to Betty Karp in 1917. Their union produced one daughter named Maxine (1918–2009). His first marriage was plagued by his infidelity, ending in divorce in 1940; he was very close to his daughter Maxine and gave her acting lessons.
Chico's second marriage was to Mary De Vithas. They married in 1958, three years before his death.
In the 1974 Academy Awards telecast, Jack Lemmon presented Groucho with an honorary Academy Award to a standing ovation. The award was also for Harpo, Chico, and Zeppo, whom Lemmon mentioned by name. It was one of Groucho's final major public appearances. "I wish that Harpo and Chico could be here to share with me this great honor," he said, naming the two deceased brothers (Zeppo was still alive at the time and in the audience). Groucho also praised the late Margaret Dumont as a great straight woman who never understood any of his jokes.
Chico died of arteriosclerosis at age 74 on October 11, 1961, at his Hollywood home. He was the eldest brother and the first to die.
Chico is entombed in the mausoleum at Forest Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery in Glendale, California. Chico's younger brother Gummo is in a crypt across the hall from him.

The Journey Begins . . .
Tumblr media
So what is this journey all about?
Tumblr media
I am Terry Jenkins, a father of 4 grown-up children, now living with my partner and her teenage son, in the north-east of England.
I am a full-time carer for my partner, Andie, and at the time of starting this journey (September 2020), living off government benefits.
I am on benefits because I have to care for Andie throughout the day, which means I don’t have the time to have a job.
Having previously run a myriad of self-employed ventures and having 25 years of experience in the IT industry (plus I have also lectured in IT for a brief period in the not-so-distant past), being on benefits doesn’t come easy to me.
  The Journey Begins
So having cared for Andie for a couple of years now, I feel the time is right for me to venture back into the world of self-employment and see if I can ease the government of the burden of looking after us.
Now, some days, time isn’t always easy to find if Andie is having a rough time of it. Her condition means I get to do most of the stuff around the house, which limits my available time.
Tumblr media
Nevertheless, I do have time across the day and find myself on the computer a lot (old habits die hard), especially in the afternoons and evenings.
So I got to thinking that maybe I could start earning some cash, as I do detest being on benefits. I don’t have any problem with people who are on benefits, but I have worked all my life and am not one for just sitting around and relaxing. If you see me on the beach, I’m the one typing on the laptop!
  Mapping Out The Journey
So, coming off benefits – how do I do it?
Well, it was obvious that I couldn’t do anything that took me out of the house and the ad hoc nature of my caring duties meant I couldn’t really have clients if I wanted to offer them the service I would expect. So my only option was to build a business making money online.
In some ways this decision was obvious. When I gave up my bricks and mortar business back in 2014 I spent a lot of time doing self-development training and studying internet marketing, affiliate marketing, and even a touch of network marketing.
Even during my first 2 years of caring for Andie, I still watched the odd training course or YouTube video to keep up with the latest trends online.
In those 6 years after giving up my Post Office and shop, I had come a long way in my personal development and I knew a bit about making money online.
The Journey Of A Wise Man?
Tumblr media
Now I’m no fool, I know the majority of people do not make a go of making money online. If you don’t believe me, look up the figures. It’s a very small percentage of people who build a good income online.
But my goals aren’t massive. I am not looking to buy an 8-bed mansion and drive a Ferrari. For one thing, it’s not really my style. Nevertheless, I did want to replace the income we are getting on benefits, plus a little more to make life more comfortable (for Andie more than myself).
So I set myself 2 goals. One for 90 days and one for 12 months.
You see, I am 60 in October 2021, so I have roughly 13 months before I start to get the pensions I built up when I was younger.
So my first goal was to ensure the business was self-sufficient by the end of 2020. The second goal was to be earning around £2700 per month (around $3000) by October 2021.
Allowing 1 month (September 2020) to get everything in place to run the business, meant these targets nicely fitted the 90-day and 12-month time slots.
  How Much Is A Ticket?
Tumblr media
As for the start-up budget, being on benefits for so long doesn’t leave a lot of elbow room, but using other knowledge I had (more on this later), I managed to have a little tax-free start-up money to invest in the business.
This start-up budget would pay for training courses and other packages (hosting, domain names, autoresponders, etc) to ensure I had the knowledge and digital assets I needed to succeed.
So how does this journey touch your life I hear you say? Well, my aim is to journal my journey as I go, sharing my experiences and my financial statements.
I also want to help others who want to tackle the same journey by providing training and information along the way.
I also want to provide honest reviews of training and other products in the Internet Marketing arena. There are a plethora of reviews out there for these products, which get released daily. These reviews all have one thing in mind, to get you to buy using their affiliate link, so they can make money from your purchase.
Now don’t get me wrong, I will be doing affiliate marketing, but I will only recommend products I intend on buying and using myself or products I would purchase if I didn’t already have something to do the job.
I am fully expectant that most of my reviews will say ‘don’t buy’.
  Looking In The Rear-View Mirror
Tumblr media
I have recently been going through the myriad of training and online tools I purchased since 2014 (Google ‘Shiny Object Syndrome’), mainly because a lot of them were registered against an email I no longer use. The domain is coming up for re-registration and I don’t want to pay for it anymore, so I wanted to change the registered email address.
I was absolutely shocked by how many of these products no longer exist!
Many of the domain names they were registered against are now available to purchase again.
In Internet Marketing, a lifetime account means absolutely nothing. I was appalled by how many of these purchases were a total waste of money and I was thankful I hadn’t built a business reliant on using any of them.
I was also shocked that some ‘Lifetime Membership’ offers I had bought still existed, but they had changed the domain name (from .net to .com in some instances) and if you wanted the latest access you needed to repurchase another lifetime account – go figure.
These weren’t inexpensive purchases either. We are taking multiple hundreds of dollars for the original purchase and a similar figure to purchase another ‘lifetime’ access. This second purchase would give you what you laughingly assumed you had purchased the first time around.
Plus, I was shocked by the ‘Internet Gurus’ who had undertaken this shady practice.
These were people I had previously trusted and looked up to!
Anyway, I am starting to rant now and that is never a good thing (hide the sharp knives).
Fortunately, I did discover a decent amount of good quality tools and training I can use in my new venture. Plus, I have good experience of whom to trust and whom not to trust with my money.
  A Journey Alone?
So my question to you is, ‘Do you want to follow in my footsteps?’
You can just follow from afar by dropping in occasionally (although this may make you feel like a peeping tom – joking), or you can sign up to get on my email list and receive updates on my progress.
Or, if you are feeling particularly brave, you can go one step further and join my journey. My intention is to have some pretty affordable membership websites available to teach you the steps I am taking and inform you of the products I am purchasing and how I intend to use them.
I Am Up For It, Are You?
If so, get on the mailing list and I will keep you informed of my journey step by step.
If this is a parting of ways, I thank you for reading this far and I wish you success on your chosen path.
Tumblr media
If you are up for a wild journey, then you are more than welcome my friend. I look forward to guiding and teaching you more over the coming months.
  To your continued success,
Terry Jenkins

Enslaved Real Estate - Seven Figures Easily
Tumblr media
I often convey to people that becoming a millionaire in the real estate business is an uncomplicated thing to accomplish. They usually give me a look for bewilderment. I say that you don't have to understand every aspect in real estate in order to begin investing. The best thing to do is as well as a basic buy-and-hold strategy purchasing whatever type of property you may be capable of buying with as little money down as possible. The way buy something with as little money down as possible is determined by your financial situation and what types of mortgages you're capable of being approved for. Since guidelines for mortgages and government treatment changes daily, it's impossible for me to tell you the obvious way to do that. I can tell you how I did it for years using the all-money-down technique I described earlier in the book. But I'm going to give you a quick refresher course below. If you bought $100, 000 house through conventional means, you may have to put 20 percent down is $20, 000 plus closing rates that will cost you approximately $3000. In this example, you fit $23, 000 down to buy $100, 000 investment real estate. Using the all-money-down technique, you would buy a $100, 000 building for cash putting all $100, 000 down as well as closing costs of $3000. At this point, you have $103, 000 down on the property and you begin to invest an additional $5000 to fix the property up. You now have a total of $108, 000 of your money into the property. You put the house and property up for rent and you find a good tenant, therefore now you're empty investment property is a business making profits and shows a profit. Now you go to the bank or investment company and you get the property appraised with the intention of doing any cash-out refinance. Because you fixed up the property and it's a fabulous money-making business, the property appraises for $114, 000. The financial institution is willing to lend you an 80 percent property loan on the $114, 000 appraisal giving you a mortgage of $91, 200. You originally put down $103, 000 and been given back a mortgage for $91, 200 making your out-of-pocket costs $11, 800. When using the all-money-down technique as compared to the purchase of a property through conventional methods, you save $11, 180. Now of course, you're going to have a higher mortgage and less money flow coming from the property, but you're also going to experience $11, 200 to buy the next property with. Sometimes typically the homes you buy are going to cost you $10, 000 to buy; other sorts of times you're going to break even on the deal. You might sometimes be lucky enough to actually get paid to buy a house, which has manifested to me once or twice. The goal was simply to just continue to keep buying as many properties as possible until you build up a selection worth millions of dollars. You will make a profit from the cash flow, but most probably that's going to go back and do things like repairs and vacancies in all the other issues that come up with real estate. If you do end up banks and loans $10, 000 during the year from the cash flow of your properties, there is your down money to buy an additional property and even expand your portfolio further. I have constantly repeated are actually not going to find the cash flow to be something of remarkable value to you. The cash flow will help pay for the necessary matters and give you down money for future deals, but also in the end you will work hard for very little money. The surprise will come when you've ridden the cycle as a result of bottom to top and created a gap amongst the portfolio's value and the amount of mortgages that you owe for those building. Accruing equity in your buildings, you will slowly learn to see your net worth increasing as the years start on. For example let's just say you bought one property one year for five years valued at $100, 000 a home. Since the five years that you bought the properties, worth have gone up somewhat and the mortgages have gone down, additionally your net worth is the equity in between. As you begin to look at this throughout your investing career, especially when the market will be on the rise, it can be an exciting time. Your expectations should be to exist off of the income from your job while the profit from the nightly rental property business is used to fuel its needs. You can usually get to a point somewhere when a real conflict will develop between your current career and your real estate investments. It's very hard to be in two places at once, and ultimately it will begin to catch up with you. For me this conflict was easily reconciled since I only wanted to be doing real estate anyway, and yet if you love your day job and you plan to continue it by means of your life, you're going to have to make some tough decisions. You could potentially keep your day job, but someone is going to have to jog your portfolio. I maintain that getting a seven-figure netting worth in equity strictly in your real estate holdings isn't that difficult to do. I recommend you join real estate investment clubs not to mention read as many books as you possibly can. As you begin to make investments, you will discover friends in the businesses that relate to your industry which includes people in the mortgage business. I recommend that you associate with plenty of of these people as possible so that your knowledge of the industry expands a lot. A friend of mine who's an intelligent guy took a handful of this advice and began moving quickly. In his first of all year, I think he bought two properties, but through his second year he was already doing $300, 000 flips and buying multiunit investment properties with a partner that she has. First of all, I'm not a big fan of collaboration for the deal size he was doing, and subsequently, I think he was growing a little too fast. If the person didn't have a job, I wouldn't have a problem with the rate of his growth, but because he had a well-paying job, I cautioned him not to move too swift. The second half of 2009 was a rough year just for him as his $300, 000 flip was not reselling, and he's already had to do two evictions. Lugging the mortgage and his $300, 000 flip was basically expensive and was already causing some tension in the partnership. It's not going to be all fun and games; because your portfolio grows, your problems grow with it as well as workload grows. Another thing I can say about the issues from the real estate business is that they seem to come in waves. If I owned dozens of homes, I would go six months whereby I wouldn't need to change a doorknob and then out of the blue all hell would break loose. I'd be managing an eviction, two vacancies, and apartments that were demolished. When it rains it pours in the real estate business enterprise; at least that's the way it worked out for me. I remember in two separate occasions during the summertime one year followed by a subsequent summer a year later I was bombarded with all issues. In this business, you can't let a vacant place sit and wait because you're losing money every day it is far from rented. The process of getting it renovated and re-rented will be highest importance. As bad as I make it sound, It is my opinion you'll find it all to be worth it in the end. It seems that no matter how much cash I made, I have learned in my career I never ever really save. As you earn more money, your lifestyle increases and you will upgrade your homes and cars to the point where your own bills go right along with your salary. The real estate enterprise is almost like a bank account you really can't touch easily with out selling a building, so it continues to grow and feed off from itself. It's a terrific feeling when you realize that your $550, 000 portfolio experienced a 10 percent increase in character in the last year and you're up an additional $55, 000. I'm using the same principles today in the commercial arena selecting larger buildings with similar strategies. I can't buy a $3 million building with the technique, but there are many other things that may be worked out in the commercial world. Nowadays I use strategies that focus on complex negotiations with the sellers where I convince the crooks to carry paper or lease option the building. I'm also able to borrow money from banks for commercial investments presenting the bank that piece of real estate I am buying as security as well as existing pieces of real estate as collateral. I label it redundant collateralization and am seeing more and more of computer every day from banks. If you can go from broke for you to seven figures in one real estate cycle as I've proposed easily making yourself $1 million during your first housing cycle, then just imagine what you can do in your second real estate menstrual cycle. I plan to be carrying a real estate portfolio using the value north of $10 million and have that past record under my control before the real estate market begins to show any specific gains. I expect the gains will begin to show sometime all-around 2013 or later. Can you imagine if you're holding an important $10 million portfolio and the real estate market goes up a meager five percentage points? It doesn't matter how much money I made who year in income because as long as I can keep the business afloat I am up half a million cash in equity in one year. If I'm ever fortunate to see the crazy increases that we saw in 2005, can you imagine what it will feel like to see a 20 percent increase in values in one year when you're sustaining a portfolio worth eight figures? "Far better it will be to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs even though checkered by failure, than to rank through those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer from much because they live in the gray twilight that recognizes neither victory nor defeat. " Theodore Roosevelt Let me dream about holding a portfolio worth $12 million after the market goes up 20 percent giving me a one-year tax free gain of $2, 400, 000. I feel that this is a realistic expectation for my second circuit of the real estate business. In the year 2025, I will be sixty years old. I feel certain that if I continue to just do exactly what I've been doing my whole life, I surely should have the net worth of many millions of dollars strictly for my real estate property holdings. I know of no other way to make money through these types of numbers as easily as I do in the properties business. I don't deny that other people have the means to make this kind of money or even more, but I am not familiar with the methods. I consider myself an expert on real estate, and also I certainly feel as some of the things I'm speaking about here will happen to me as long as I'm lucky enough to still be breathing when 2025 rolls around. This is why I love the estate business, and this is why I'm pumped every day so you can get out and keep it going because I can notice my future is filled with bright and sunny months. I feel terrific about getting up in the morning and going to perform, and when you have that kind of attitude, there's no way you possibly can fail. This morning I woke up at 5: 33 a. m. and went to my office building to reorganize some equipment in our communication room. I'm spending numerous afternoon hours on a Sunday working on my book plus feeling great about my possibilities. If you love what you achieve, you will be much happier and much more successful at whatever you try out. I don't even consider the things that I did this morning or perhaps writing this book as work in the regular technique people think of it. Obviously, it is work that Now i'm doing, but I don't have a negative feeling about the the word work or what it entails. I get a great sense of accomplishment from getting up in the morning and building things that happen furthering along my career each day on baby steps toward the ultimate goal of massive huge selection accumulation. I hope that some of you reading this book will probably really grasp the things I'm talking about above. I feel specifically the most important message in the entire book. Here's an idea you might want to think about after you buy your first property. Make sure that you take some time when you have bought it to really analyze what's going to be involved in being a realty landlord. If you like it or even love it, let's get the blowout started, and if you don't get out right now. If you're going to commence in the business just for the money but despise dealing with tenants as well as working on buildings, you really have to be careful and reconsider the things you're about to do. This business is not for wimps, also it takes a heck of a lot of guts to be a real estate real estate investor. To get to the level that I have achieved, you may have to take 1 / 2 your net worth and roll the dice regarding some large commercial building risking the twenty years regarding hard work on one deal. Until you go through that process, I could never truly explain to you what that will feel like. My name is Phil, and I'm addicted to real estate.

THE TEN WORST THINGS YOU CAN DO IN A NEGOTIATION

THE TEN WORST THINGS YOU CAN DO IN A NEGOTIATION
The best negotiator I knew always acted like an idiot. He acted so well that I thought he was really stupid. I also thought at the time that he was my best friend.
That was probably an act also. Just two years later he stopped talking to me forever.
I ran into him in the street the other day. He smiled and shook my hand. I felt warm, like he liked me again. Then he was gone.
Negotiation is first about warmth. Two sides deciding if they want to be friends with each other. If they want to be in the same tribe, fighting side by side in this harsh world.
After that it’s about vulnerability. Making yourself into the type of person someone else wants to take care of.
This is not a mystery. When a baby is born the negotiation begins. It lasts until at least the baby is an adult.
My oldest turns 16 tomorrow. She negotiates with me every day. I love her. But maybe that’s what makes her such a tough negotiator.
I’m not so good at realizing where all the boundaries are.
Between the outer me and the inner me. Between the me that always loves her and the me that wants her to love me back.
I guess that’s how I am with everyone. If they don’t love me back, I’m afraid, I’ll be less happy.
If I’m honest where the boundaries are, then we can begin to set up the rules. Then love begins.
Tricky!
I’ve probably seen over 1000 negotiations in action. I’ve probably been directly involved in 100 or so.
Every day life is a negotiation. I’m not talking in this post about the every day negotiations although the same rules apply. I’m talking about negotiations where careers and money and reputations and maybe love is at stake.
For me, that latter is the hardest. So take my advice with a grain of salt. In fact, I’d rather tell you all the ways in which I’ve messed up in negotiations. Because this is really the classroom I learned in.
A) IF YOU HAVE A SMALL LIST OF TERMS, YOU LOSE.
Let’s say you are selling a company. One side is usually focused on the final price. That side will henceforth be called “the loser”.
Make your list bigger: what are the terms of the non-compete, what is the length of the earn out, what are the salaries of the new top executives, what are the perks, what are the options packages.
Or if it’s a job: what are the responsibilities, what are similar people being paid, what is the path to higher promotions, what are the details of health, vacation, moving expenses, reviews, etc.
The side with the bigger list can give up the nickels for the dimes to the loser.
B) IF YOU DON’T GET ENOUGH SLEEP, YOUR WILLPOWER WILL BE ZERO.
Carl Icahn, one of the best investors in the world, uses this technique.
He schedules his negotiations for the early evening.
Our peak mental ability (according to Dan Ariely, author of Predictably Irrational, and many other books) is approximately 2 hours after we wake up until about 4 hours after we wake up.
And then throughout the day, our willpower slowly leaks away until we sleep again. That’s why we watch TV and eat donuts at night rather than when we first wake up.
So Carl Icahn will sleep until 4pm and then go to the negotiation at 6pm.
On the other side of the table are exhausted lawyers who have been working all day.
BAM! Who do you think will win that negotiation.
C) MOST PEOPLE THINK SHORT-TERM. BE THE VISIONARY AND YOU WIN.
Applied Semantics didn’t want to sell to Google in 2001. They had raised some money and thought they could make it.
A few months earlier I had made the mistake of turning them down when they were raising money. “The search engine business is dead!” said the greatest prophet of modern times.
Me.
Larry Page told the CEO of Applied, “I’m not getting off the phone until you say yes”.
So Applied Semantics sold themselves in exchange for 1% of Google. ONE PERCENT.
This was before Google went public. So it was a total unknown what those shares would be worth. Larry Page had the vision of where they would be.
Applied Semantics became the Adsense division of Google. Which now accounts for 99% of Google’s revenues.
Are they upset? Shouldn’t they have sold for more?
Of course not. They sold for over a billion in value and created the end goal of making one of the best companies in the world.
You can only get rich once. Don’t worry so much about maximizing your percentage of something. One percent of $250 billion is better than 100% of nothing, as the saying goes.
I’m going to take a break for a second and say something that has saved me considerable stress.
NEVER WORRY ABOUT WHAT IS IN SOMEONE ELSE’S POCKET.
Let other people do well. Then you will do well.
Ok, back to what you shouldn’t do in a negotiation.
D) DON’T SAY NO.
I say this even though I wrote the book, “The Power of No”. What I really mean here is, bury your NO inside of a YES.
I was negotiating with one company once. They wanted me to be an advisor. I said, “no”. But not like that. What I really said was, “You have a great company and I am happy to give advice.”
What a great way to say no! They kept calling. They really wanted me. I said, “Here’s what you should do without me” and I totally laid out the plan they should do. I did it for free. That was another way of saying “no”.
This made them want me as an advisor even more. Eventually they offered enough that I said, “yes”. They followed my advice exactly. The advice that I had already given for free.
There’s a well-known improv technique of “Yes, and…”
In improv, the first performer creates the premise. The second performer can’t change it or reject it, he can only build on it.
In a negotiation if someone says, “well, you’re only worth $1 because you have X” you can say, “yes, and we also have Y so let’s take that into consideration.”
Suddenly your value is higher because you didn’t start a fight. You agreed and added.
E) MANY PEOPLE NEGOTIATE WITH THE WRONG MATH.
This is the part many people don’t get right and it’s hard to explain. I’ll take a simple example. I don’t know if the negotiation took place this way but it describes what I mean.
Why did Facebook buy Instagram for $1 billion. Instagram had 11 employees and zero revenues.
On that basis, maybe Instagram was worth…nothing. Or close to it.
But maybe the negotiation went something like this:
Instagram: Let’s agree to a formula first on how we should value our company.
Facebook: Err…Ok.
Instagram: Forget about our revenues for a second. But let’s just assume we can earn $X for every user you have (call that number $Y). Pay us $X * Y.
Facebook: Err.Ok.

Watch This Stock Market Celebrity Do Amazing Street Magic… On Camera
Tumblr media
Just a few weeks ago, we got a strange invitation.
James Altucher, the famous ex-hedge-fund manager, financial author, and frequent contributor seen on CNN, MSNBC, in Forbes and the Wall Street Journal, and Financial Times…
Asked us to come up to New York and, as he said, “bring a camera.”
We did. And what happened next was absolutely incredible — live, on camera, this famous celebrity conducted what we can only describe as “a magic income experiment.”
I’ve never seen anybody do anything quite it… click here to see what happened.
Tumblr media
Instagram probably then showed how they could add $1 in value for every customer Facebook had. Facebook has a billion users. So a billion dollars.
Come to the negotiation with your formula. Know how to fill in the variables before the other side does. Every good negotiator does this.
The reason I know this? Because this is how I’ve lost many negotiations to good negotiators. I’ve had very good mentors on this one aspect of negotiation.
Because we all negotiated the formula, but not the price, in advance, then everyone has already said “Yes” to something and they basically have to stick with it.
(Well, they don’t have to. But it’s high stakes and you don’t want to seem like you don’t live up to your word.)
F) IF YOU HOPE FOR ONLY ONE OUTCOME, YOU NEVER GET IT.
I really wanted my company, Stockpickr, to be bought by Google. I threw everything I could into the basket. I would send them love notes in the middle of the night.
Seriously, I was in love with the woman doing the negotiating.
I didn’t have a technical team was the problem. We built the whole site for a few thousand dollars. I had one partner. We had 99% margins on our revenues but Google likes technical teams.
Oh well.
I then focused on getting alternatives. I called AOL, Yahoo, Reuters, Forbes. Then thestreet.com bought us.
Sometimes people write me and say, “I sent my ten ideas to my favorite company but they haven’t called back. Should I call them again?”
That’s the wrong question. The right question is: “What’s the next 100 companies I should write to?”
It’s no secret that being able to walk away from a negotiation is the best starting point in a negotiation.
G) SMARTER PEOPLE LOSE.
This is what I like to say: you guys are the experts at this, we’ve just been focused on building our product, company, art, whatever.
Then I say, “if you were me, what would you ask for?”
I ask them advice. Because they are the experts. It’s not a lie.
If you are applying for a job with someone more senior than you, why not ask the more senior guy for advice? He knows more than you.
Very often they give very good advice.
H) IF YOU NEGOTIATE WITH A LOSER, YOU LOSE.
If two sides are negotiating, you need at least one champion for what you are doing on the other side.
One time I was working with a company and GE offered us a billion dollars for the company. Yes, a BILLION.
They laid out the time frame. “The deal will be closed by November 15” said the highest ranking person in the room from GE.
I went back to the CEO of the company I was advising and told him that.
He said, “Who were you talking to?” I told him.
He said, “100% chance this deal doesn’t happen”.
But they offered! I told him. They actually made an offer.
“Trust me. No way. There’s no real champion for you on the other side who is close to being a decision maker. She is 5 rungs below the decision maker and she’s your only champion.”
And he was right. That deal did not happen. They found a better way to get what they wanted for 1/200 of the price.
You can only cross the bridge to the other side if someone strong is there holding out their hand to pull you in.
I) THE DEAL IS NOT THE FINAL DEAL. DON’T RELAX!
People think when they agree on a deal, that’s the end of the negotiation.
I’m sorry to say, that is only the beginning of the negotiation.
There’s agreeing, there’s signing, and there’s closing.
The final two steps are equally important and everyone assumes they are easy.
They aren’t. They are excruciatingly painful. The honeymoon period lasts for two days after you agree. Then there can be another six months to go.
Agreeing is easy. “I’ll buy your product or business for $X.”
Signing a deal involves all the little things that are the nickels and dimes (see above).
Closing a deal means both sides delivering everything they represented in a deal.
At each stage of this is buyer’s remorse and seller’s remorse and often things have to be renegotiated.
So every day after agreement, make it a point to stay in touch, be friends, keep focusing on the vision (particularly with the champion for your deal on the other side), have just as much energy to close all the details, keep in touch with the lawyers to make sure paperwork is going through, keep working on the alternatives (since the negotiation is not done til it’s DONE), and so on.
So many deals fall apart after agreement. You don’t need this pain in your life.
LOVE IS A NEGOTIATION.
Taking another break here in the post. Please forgive me for not laying it out all perfect.
When I used to go on a first date I was both scared and excited. I’d get excited first, “she wants to date me!” And then I’d get scared. “Ugh, what do I do now?”
I’d literally do homework for the date. I’d find out her interests and read books on them. I’d watch comedy beforehand. I’d think of things to say and questions to ask. I’m not saying preparation is bad.
One time I was an expert on Kaballah. Another time I had to be an expert on Al Gore (long story). Another time I had to bribe the counter girl to pretend she knew me before my date arrived.
I’d be too scared to show my real self so I’d have to get her to like my fake self long enough for me to feel comfortable showing the real me.
Sometimes that never happened. In many cases I never had a real me. I was always jumping through hoops to keep the fake me going. I had to keep bribing the counter girl everytime we went for yogurt.
This is the difference between agreeing on a deal (the first date) and closing (trust, love, real compassion). This is a problem I’m afraid I will always have. I hope I am getting better bit by bit.
J) MOST DEALS DON’T WORK OUT.
You agree, you sign, you close, and STILL it’s not the end.
Don’t be the guy (or woman) who falls apart now that all the energy of the deal has been expended.
It’s a negotiation and a deal because NOW there is work to do. There is a common vision to be achieved. There is a fantasy that must be made into reality.
Be that person. Be the one who delivers. You have a new baby in your hands as the result of this negotiation.
Now the hard work begins. Raise that baby to be a good adult.
What do you think?

That or exotic places
"That or exotic places," says Andrea. "This is not only a sex business as some people think - models have to speak with a member as if they are in a normal, online relationship. Being able to discuss many subjects brings comfort to both parties."A lot of their clients are really freaking mean for no reason. The downside to raking in that sweet cash is that a lot of people can be really mean for no reason. She says a lot of guys can't even sit there and watch her without saying mean things to her, and many of them don't tip either. Granted, that happens in minimum-wage jobs too, but I'm guessing what guys say to her is probably way worse than what people say to fast-food employees. I had the opportunity to watch her cam, and I realized that she has a persona when she’s camming—in the same way that a lot of media people do. It’s not like she’s drastically different, but there’s a version of herself that she shares with people while shes at work in the same way that an actress would go on a talk show and be the sweeter, funnier, more engaged version of herself. She puts on a show, and gives her best, sexiest performance, reading what the client wants, asking questions, and taking directions. All the while, she’s sort of straddling the line between sexual partner, therapist, and moral supporter. It’s a ton of emotional labor—like any type of sex work. I think we often forget that being a sex worker is essentially working in the service industry."With the Feds closing down and tightening the control on casino and poker sites, some of those [criminal] elements have found a new way of doing business: the Cam Industry. Let me make clear that this is in no way an MFC problem where I work. This is an industry-wide problem which will need to be addressed if this industry wants to survive."
Unlike many who work in the sex industry, Sandy Bell does not worry about her own security."There are girls who think they will just stay in front of the camera and make money. But all the things they do there will affect their minds. The next step is prostitution. I see that now."In the media, sex workers are always portrayed as tragic victims of drug addiction or sex trafficking. But that’s not always the case. So many cammers—and sex workers in general—defy that stereotype, and their lives are often totally different than what we assume. My exploration into camming definitely confirmed that. Model, producer and co-creator of YouTube channel ComeCurious, Reed is essentially the physical embodiment of sex positivity, which she defines as trying to make people feel like what they’re doing and what they’re into isn’t wrong, it’s normal and it’s absolutely fine.” She’s a huge advocate for removing stigma and taboos around sex, and we caught up with her to learn more about webcamming, a line of sex work that is seldom talked about.
Not all models work from a studio. Sandy Bell - a graduate with two university degrees - is one of a small army of women who webcam from home. She makes about 100 euros (£90) a day when she goes online to supplement her income as an interior designer. One advantage of being independent - and dealing directly with a web-hosting company - is that she earns a larger percentage of members' fees.Yes, they work even when they have their periods. This model says she fortunately has "the world's shortest, lightest periods" so she just chooses to do shows that don't require her to remove her underwear while wearing a tampon and then occasionally takes a day off if she feels like it. Makes sense. It was after a shift at the club in Kings Cross I was dancing at that I sat on my bedroom floor and googled feminism and stripping.” I was naked underneath my pink robe, hair extensions falling out, one eyelash stubbornly stuck on. I had been speaking with a friend that night on the phone during my break who had said something that I couldn’t get out of my head. She told me that my job was degrading” and asked me how I could call myself a feminist when I turn guys on for money. But if you don't have this luxury — like a lot of girls across the world — you'll likely work for a "studio". That's basically a euphemism for another person's computer (probably a man), in front of which you'll perform on a tight schedule. You're still working through, say, MyFreeCams, but instead of only giving MFC a cut of your take, the studio owner takes a piece as well. Often a large one. If you don't stick to your mandatory hours, you'll be fired. You'll also be potentially living with strangers in conditions beneath the grimiest motel. CONTINUED BELOW...

I had the opportunity

I think we often forget that being a sex worker is essentially working in the service industry.Odds are, you're referred by a newspaper or website listing. Maybe a friend suggested you try it out. Maybe you're shifting from traditional strip club work to the online equivalent — a popular trend in wealthier countries. Maybe you're working in a brothel where web camming is just another expectation. Whatever the case, you'll have to stream yourself through a web cam portal, one of the massive sites that catalogues thousands of models and acts as a go-between between customer and model. For my first show I applied some makeup, did my hair and put on a deep v-neck leotard. It was the middle of summer and boiling hot even in just that. I sat on my bed, placed my webcam facing toward me and sat doodling in my sketchpad, waiting for patrons.I had the opportunity to watch her cam, and I realized that she has a persona when she’s camming—in the same way that a lot of media people do. Would I recommend it? It's up to the individual (obviously), just make sure you do your research and find other women in the industry to go to for advice. The young women who admit to leaving nothing to the imagination admit they are paid well for their trouble – and don't even have to leave their rooms to get paid. A lot of their clients are really freaking mean for no reason. The downside to raking in that sweet cash is that a lot of people can be really mean for no reason. Andra Chirnogeanu, Studio 20's PR Manager, also rejects the idea that this is risky or psychologically damaging work.
To this end, Studio 20 employs trainers, a psychologist and an English teacher. Most of the clients are North American and European, so it is essential the models can communicate with them. There’s so much free porn that I feel webcamming is more of a personal one-on-one. You can go online and find any ol’ stuff, but webcamming is more personal; it’s tailored exactly to what you want and what you’re looking for. You’re not sharing it with 100 thousand other people. This is your show. Most of the time you build up a relationship, I talk to you as a friend and I respect you as a person. ‘How has your day been, what did you get from the shops, what are you cooking for dinner…’ it’s like an online relationship” Not all models work from a studio. The rest of the many thousands struggle to make any money at all under what appear to be demeaning, even dangerous conditions. After eight years of observation, Mila says, straight up, that camming is a criminal business on an international scale: CONTINUED BELOW...

Obligatory Mass Effect Crossover
(I just. wanted. to worldbuild ffxiv into mass effect setting. ok tbh this is mostly FFXIV IN SPAAAACE but y’know. whatevs. i regret nothing!)
Dalamud always looked so ominous.
It was an artificial satellite the size of a small moon, glaring red and menacingly trailing after Menpina around Hydaelyn. ‘Menphina’s Loyal Hound’, it had been called when they as a civilisation were young and ignorant, before they realised that it was a weapon of mass destruction contained within an artificial shell. The aether around it was always warped, prone to unstable flares and splutters, to the point where they had a whole institution dedicated to predicting and mapping those flare ups to warn incoming and outgoing star vessels so they weren’t reduced to superheated atoms.
It was a relic of a very ancient, reckless past – a relic that was still very much in use. Due to the way it was, ah, constructed, only a select percentage of the population could ever work on it. Only 0.01% of Hydaelyn’s population won the genetic lottery to withstand the Elder Primal’s influences slumbering within that ancient relic, and an even smaller percentage of that actually had the skill, intellect and will to be charged with its day to day running. Dalamud was, despite being a weapon of mass destruction, Hydaelyn’s only source of infinite energy.
One of those very very very lucky few in charge of such an important, vital relic… was Aza.
---
“-ing naked when the snow falls around me! Drifting closer to the edge but She won’t have me!”
Aza hummed along to the song blasting through his helmet, idly tapping along the flickering Allagan display. The live support in the control room was still down, but considering that shit was over ten thousand years old and fine tuned for heavily genetically modified Allagan, it was never all that reliable. After an unfortunately incident a century ago where some poor sod asphyxiated to death, it was now mandatory to do maintenance work like you were ready to be spaced within the next thirty seconds.
“Wake up in sweat, full of regret, try to forget, these memories, lurking beneath, lost in a dream…”
The display flickered, and Aza frowned a little when the same error cropped up for the fifth time since his shift started. It was a minor thing – a miniscule percentage rise in temperature and aether harvesting, but it was really strange. There were no solar flares or weird space shit happening for aether levels to spike, so why…
“Unchosen paths, a broken path, forespoken wr- CHIRP. CHIRP. INCOMING CALL FROM FORWARD STATION: H A L O N E.”
“Damn it, just before the best part,” Aza muttered, sending a pulse of aether to the linkpearl insistently chirping in his ear, “Yeah, whaddya want?”
“Aza,” a very pleasantly familiar voice purred, “Is that any way to greet your partner?”
“Well, if it isn’t handsome!” Aza laughed, his mood buoying as he quickly adjusted the little error flashing across the Allagan display. It resolved itself and Dalamud stopped overproducing aether. He leaned on the console and made himself comfortable, his tail lifting in pleasure, “I thought you weren’t back from New Ishgard until the end of the year? Not that I'm complaining. I missed you, gorgeous.”
“And I missed you too, love," Aymeric returned with such warmth is made Aza's heart want to burst into glittery confetti, even if the crappy reception distorted his partner's voice. Seriously, it was good to hear his voice again! The Comm Buoys were still absolute dog wank between Ishgard's newest colony and Hydaelyn, so he greedily drank up every crackly word from his linkpearl, "I returned early as Haurchefant seemed to be handling its administrative and military duties well enough on his own despite the complaints of his ‘conduct’. He was performing well above the standard, to be honest.”
“Whaaat?" Aza gasped in utter outrage, "Who’s complaining about Haurchefant? He’s an absolute sweetheart!”
“Yes, he’s also pure and ‘best boy’, whatever that means,” Aza could practically feel Aymeric's eyeroll, “Unfortunately, his appointment to a rather prestigious position has ruffled more than a few feathers in the House of Lords-”
“Is this because he’s a gay bastard?” Aza harrumphed, “Have they forgotten that their stupid Prime Minister is also a gay bastard? There’re even photos of you being one all over the Aethernet," he adopted a sly, teasing tone, "I really like the drunken one. Y’know, the one where you’re caught groping my ass during that horrible dinner party?”
“Oh Gods, I almost forgot about that,” Aymeric groaned, sounding like he was in physical pain, “Mobbed by journalists for weeks after that, demanding to know all sorts of obscene details…”
“Yeah, I remember you having to do evasive manoeuvres every time you had to go outside. Funny as shit,” Aza sniggered and swept a bit of dust off the Allagan keyboard, taking care not to accidentally input anything. These things were unpredictable. As they were created to interface directly to an Allagan’s brain implant they tended to get confused if you rubbed your grubby hands all over them without keeping a tight lid on your ambient aether.
“So, what’re you doing on the forward station? I thought you would’ve been keen to go straight home?”
“Dalamud is being a little testy today, it seems,” Aymeric said, sounding slightly sulky, “We’re held here until it either calms, or travels to the other side of Hydaelyn, before we can board the landing shuttle.”
“And, of course, you decided to abuse your World Leader privileges to talk to your lonely boyfriend via the control room's comms?”
“I may as well cash in on some sort of privileges for all the torture my government puts me through.”
Aza laughed, pushing up from the console when that annoyingly, persistent little error flickered up again. It was beginning to worry him now. Dalamud was old as shit, so it was believable that program breaking bugs could start developing in the highly complicated system. Even after several thousand years of study, the only explanation magitek engineers and aetherochemical scientists had for how it worked was a shrug and ‘Primal Magic’?
A lot of unexplainable things were chalked up to ‘Primal Magic’… or the ‘Mothercrystal’.
Aza had to spend approximately seven years in Val University to even scratch the surface of how to work the damn console. He knew enough to identify minor errors like these, and to divert major disasters like the venting systems failing, or one of the Meracydian dragons somehow breaking free of their prisons and running amok. The last one was always the hardest – he always felt extreme pity for them, but the law was firm: if they weren’t in stasis, they had to be culled due to the danger they presented to the workers and Dalamud itself. If even one managed to rouse the Elder Primal, they were fucked. End of.
But those were easy issues to deal with, well within his power, no matter how mentally or emotionally draining. But if he was asked to really get into the technicalities… he was clueless. Dalamud was a work of art that was incomprehensible to anyone not Allagan – which was everyone, nowadays. Most he could do was try and mitigate the damage by engaging its thrusters and hoping to fuck he launched it far away enough that the resulting implosion wouldn’t totally wipe out all life in the solar system.
“Aza? You still there? It's quiet.”
"Oh, sorry," Aza gave a small shake of his head to clear the sudden cobwebs, "I was thinking."
"About...?" Aymeric asked with an amused lilt to his voice.
"About..." Aza looked at the glow of the display with a small frown, hearing and feeling the whole structure around him groan and shudder. An ancient prison that held equally ancient prisoners in eternal torment. It was kind of sick they were still using this thing, really. He was struck with an odd, fleeting urge to force it into the sun - which he quickly discarded, because that would just break the Elder Primal free, who was unfortunately sun-proof (is that the word?) and able to survive in the vacuum of space. Still, he just didn't like the fact he was standing one floor above an entire hold crammed with Meracydians contorted into tiny stasis capsules, kept on the very cusp of consciousness in burning pain, to fuel the Elder Primal's existence. There wasn't anything they could safely do about it unless they broke themselves free, but it still felt all... wrong and made him feel kinda bad, more so today.
"Just thinking how horrible Dalamud is," he said honestly, because he could never really lie to Aymeric, even if his partner was hoping for some light, easy banter, "About a month ago one of the locks on a Meracydian's stasis capsule broke and opened up. I always thought it were adults in there, y'know? But it wasn't. It was some dragon pup, just squirming in that stasis goo shit, all... deformed and in pain. I got rid of it like I was meant to, I mean, it was kinder to, right? But, it's still... the... I don't know..." he trailed off.
Aymeric was quiet for a long moment, then; "...how many consecutive days have you worked?"
"I don't know," Aza said, and he felt mildly alarmed at that. He should know how many days he worked. He was meant to track that shit strictly, "Uh, seventy?"
"Long shifts too?"
"Twelve hours, yeah," Or thirteen? It was difficult to tell the time passing here sometimes.
"Is your superior still Y'shtola?" Aymeric asked, but he didn't wait for confirmation, "I saw her not too long ago on the station. I'll speak to her and have you placed on a mental wellness break starting today."
"What- no, Aym, c'mon, it's not that bad," Aza groaned, but... well, maybe his partner had a point? He had been sulking on here because he felt lonely and bored without Aymeric around, and everyone else was busy helping colonisation efforts beyond the solar system, adventuring and shit, while Aza was stuck in Horrible Space Prison. Only a certain type of person could really work here - it wasn't just the very rare gift of the Echo being a necessity, it was having the iron will to endure the strained, screeching edge to the surrounding aether as millions of lives existed in perpetual, pitiful agony all around you, it was enduring that almost sick, corrosive heaviness the Elder Primal exuded even in sleep. It was just... being able to endure. There was always a very real, dangerous risk succumbing to the Elder Primal's influence, Echo or not, if your will faltered for even a moment. While you wouldn't reach the mindless, slavish devotion most Indoctrinated people would, you were still at risk of developing violent paranoia, hallucinations and suicidal depression. Needless to say, Dalamud had a very high 'on the job' death statistic.
It did mean you had a lot of paid sick days. You were allowed to just take breaks whenever you felt you needed them, since it was proven space and time away from the Elder Primal's influence lessened its effects dramatically. But the whole thing still sucked.
"You've lost track of your days, and you're sounding a little off," Aymeric said in that no-nonsense tone of his which meant Aza had already lost, "Quite frankly, I'm amazed it hasn't been picked up on yet. How long until your shift ends?"
"Uh, I have... two more hours?"
"One hour."
"Uh-?"
"I'll speak to you later, love," Aymeric said, "I need to hunt down Y'shtola."
"Aym-" Click. "Arrrgh, c'mon...!"
---
There was something unexplainably good about having your feet firmly on Terra Firma again.
Dalamud’s Caretakers tended to live on Forward Station Halone until they took a mental wellness break. Sometimes this could be months, or even years in particularly resilient individuals, for Aza it was six months since he last set foot on it, when he said goodbye to Aymeric at the shuttle station and not expecting to see him again for another year.
That was an unexplainably good thing too, having Aymeric back.
“New Ishgard is a cold planet,” Aymeric murmured, his large, firm hands gently kneading up and down along his back. He had insisted, even though he must be tired from his long voyage, and Aza was very glad he hadn’t rejected the massage. He could just feel all the tension that had accumulated from those six months on Fucked Up Moon Prison just melting away beneath Aymeric’s gentle touch. He never wanted those hands to leave again, “It can reach -32C on a regular business, requiring specialised survival gear to range outside of the settlements, but it has rich deposit of industrial minerals and ice that we can exploit. Haurchefant is very optimistic about its prospects, despite the, ah, harsh environment.”
“Mm…” Aza could almost imagine it. The needle-sharp smell of snow, the biting cold wind, the ice crunching beneath your boots… “Ice for… nearby stations?”
“That’s right. It will be a source of reliable water if we decide to range further,” Aymeric’s hands paused at the small of his back, and… ah, a gentle press of lips between his shoulder blades. Aza arched to the touch with a low, happy purr, “Do you want to visit it?”
“Mm, yeah,” Aza mumbled, “I wanna see it.”
It wouldn’t happen. Dalamud’s Caretakers were actively discouraged from leaving the immediate Solar System, but there was always that glimmer of hope. If, maybe, they got a large influx of prospective hopefuls, so it wasn’t just ten of them, endlessly cycling in and out and battling the encroaching pressure of the Elder Primal. When Aza had learned he had the Echo, he had been so happy, thinking he could be placed on the Exploratory Team, ready to help colonists in potential First Contact scenarios if need be and acting as force protection.
But he didn’t. Bluebird got that. He was shuffled off to Dalamud’s Caretakers when his Echo scores ranked the highest they’d seen in well over a millennium. It had broken his heart. You couldn’t exactly say no to it.
“One day,” Aymeric murmured against his shoulder, “You’ll see it. You’ll see all the colonies we’ve made. You will not be at Dalamud forever, love.”
“Feels like I’ll be there forever,” he mumbled against the pillow.
Aymeric bit him, gently, but he got the message. He huffed out a sigh that slowly transitioned into a low groan when his partner’s hands started kneading along his tense back again. He melted beneath his touch, and those dim, gloomy thoughts faded a little more into the background. Aymeric was right, he wouldn’t be at Dalamud forever. There was a strict retirement age of forty.
Three more years. He could manage that.

Approximately thirty-three million malms away, a tiny, insignificant ice moon in orbit to Rhalgr, the Red Planet, began to shudder.
Dalamud, as distant as it was, registered a spike of unknown energy within the solar system. Automatic systems began to warm up from millennia of disuse at the perceived potential threat, the ancient, complicated machine churning through dusty old programming to decide its proper course of action. The ice moon continued to shudder with such force that its surface began to crack, and Dalamud slotted the unknown event into its targeting solutions.
This was at 2300hrs, 16 04 102018. Last logged event was approximately 10000 years ago, when a cataclysmic tectonic event shifted the entirety of Hydaelyn’s surface. Dalamud was then placed into passive-mode when X A N D E C O N T R O L T O W E R went offline and no further commands were offered. Dalamud scanned for X A N D E C O N T R O L T O W E R and received no response. No response. No response.
At 0001hrs, 17 04 102018, the ice moon violently broke apart. The alien energy spiked. Dalamud calculated and considered. Scanning anomaly. Scanning… scanning… scanning…
0010hrs, 17 04 102018, unknown alien object emerged from ice moon. Energy spikes further.
0012hrs, 17 04 102018, multiple unknown alien objects arrive into solar systems at lightspeed. Alien energy signature violently dispersed. Unknown alien objects were U N R E C O G N I S E D, therefore default to last logged behaviour when confronted with unrecognised intrusion: A G G R E S S I V E P O S T U R E.
Weapon systems were sluggish with disuse. Dalamud increased aetherical input. Elder Primal’s consciousness rose by 0.2%. Within acceptable parameters.
0014hrs, 17 04 102018, targeting solutions complete. Alien objects still U N R E C O G N I S E D, still initiating A G G R E S S I V E P O S T U R E, conclusion is D E S T R U C T I O N O F I N T R U D E R S.

Dalamud, a weapon of mass destruction, built at the pinnacle of the Allagan Empire in anticipation to assist them in dominating their immediate solar system, directed a controlled Ahk Morn through the vacuum of space toward the intruders. In a blink of an eye, it travelled multiple lightyears and speared through the collected fleet of alien ships that had leapt from the unknown, alien object with devastating effect.
It was a very bombastic First Contact with the Citadel Council.

Bus Stop by Bus Stop, Denver-Area Officials Microtarget Vaccine Hesitancy
AURORA, Colo. — John Letson had seen too many apocalyptic movies to feel comfortable getting a covid-19 vaccine initially.
“I was completely against it,” the 40-year-old movie buff said, referencing “I Am Legend” and “Children of Men,” in which humanity is in jeopardy, as examples of what could go wrong. “I think an untested thing during a pandemic has later effects that we don’t know yet.”
After discussing with a doctor the various myths that have arisen about the vaccines, his opposition softened. On the way to get pizza in late June, he happened upon a mobile vaccination clinic behind a bus stop on Colfax Avenue in this Denver suburb and got his first dose.
“I was here. They were here,” he explained, as a nurse gave him a shot of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine.
The mobile clinic in the East Colfax neighborhood is part of a new push by Denver-area public health officials to find the neighborhoods where vaccinations lag behind state or county averages. Using detailed maps that show vaccines given by ZIP code or census tract, the health departments highlight underperforming areas being masked by a county’s overall vaccination rate. They then partner with community organizations with intimate knowledge of those neighborhoods to determine strategies to address the specific barriers keeping residents from being inoculated.
As the Biden administration seeks to boost the nation’s vaccine rate by going “neighborhood by neighborhood,” in the president’s words, the approach taken on Colfax Avenue could become a model for the rest of the country. According to the National Association of County and City Health Officials, such efforts depend on the accuracy of the data and the willingness of jurisdictions to work together, which can be difficult for some regions to accomplish. The Denver-area effort has managed to use granular data across seven counties to help raise the vaccination rate by an estimated 4 percentage points in one troubled Colfax area in about a month.
“We have to do the dirty work to be with the community and listen to what their actual concerns are,” Nicole Steffens, a program manager with the nonprofit Colorado Health Institute, said in a presentation on the mapping tool. “We can take all the data that we want based on large, mass groups of people on surveys with vaccine hesitancy or why people aren’t getting vaccinations, but that might not actually apply to that very specific location.”
The public health agencies cooperating in the Denver region represent 3 million Coloradans, about 60% of the state’s population. They overlay data from the state vaccine database with the covid caseload, poverty rates and racial demographics to highlight areas of concern.
“We weren’t very surprised to see the areas that lit up,” said Meghan Prentiss, with the Tri-County Health Department, which serves Adams, Arapahoe and Douglas counties east and south of Denver. “They all kind of followed those common trends of other health indicators.”
East Colfax topped the department’s priority list. The neighborhood, which spans the border between Denver and Aurora, is one of the more impoverished in the metro area, with large numbers of immigrants and minorities, many of whom speak neither English nor Spanish.
Two-thirds of the city of Denver’s eligible residents were fully vaccinated by the end of June, compared with just above 30% in the East Colfax neighborhood. In the 80010 and 80011 ZIP codes, which include the Colfax corridor, fewer than half of those ages 30 to 39 were vaccinated, compared with more than 75% in more affluent Washington Park or City Park.
Part of the problem, people in the community told health officials, was transportation.
Tumblr media
Initially, the state had set up mass vaccination clinics in the center of Denver. But many East Colfax residents have no car, relying primarily on public transit. It’s about a 50-minute ride one way on the Route 15 bus to the Ball Arena vaccine site. For many, that was too far to venture.
“It looks great on TV to have these mass clinics where people drive through,” said Judy Shlay, an associate director who runs the immunization program for Denver Public Health, which operates the mobile vaccine clinic. “But we have to be more agile and flexible for people who are maybe more hesitant to go downtown, or because they have to take three buses to get there.”
Moreover, people in the East Colfax area often work hourly jobs as independent contractors or gig workers and get no time off to get vaccinated. And if they fall ill after getting vaccinated, they might miss another day’s pay.
So public health officials worked with transit authorities to identify where high-ridership bus lines intersected in the corridor, settling on a location by a Walmart, a Sprouts grocery store and the Little Caesars restaurant where Letson had gone to buy pizza.
On two days in late June, the mobile clinic vaccinated a total of 150 people, most receiving their first shots. Among them was Marley Sosa, 18, whose sister is a nurse who worked at the clinic.
“She made me feel safe about it,” he said. “People are just hesitant because it’s a new vaccine.”
Ira Milhouse, 40, who is homeless, said he got vaccinated so he could receive a $50 grocery gift card provided as an incentive. Stephanie Aguilar, 18, came after clinic staffers walked through the shopping plaza where the van was parked, informing everyone they could get vaccinated that day.
Tumblr media
Others inquired about the incentives but walked away unvaccinated.
Janice Robinson, 53, had come to the bus stop, part of her daily routine of “taking a ride” with no particular destination. “I don’t want the vaccine,” she said. “I don’t think I need it. I don’t really go anywhere.”
Desiree Mister, 45, had just finished a shift at Sprouts. She was tired of wearing a mask and wanted to get vaccinated. But she wasn’t sure if she could sell her plasma if she got vaccinated. She decided she’d come back the following week after a plasma draw. (The Food and Drug Administration says people who have received covid vaccines can continue to donate blood or sell plasma without a waiting period, although rules at plasma collection sites can vary.)
Early data, Shlay said, showed that vaccine access was highly correlated with income, and those able to connect digitally had an easier time tracking down shots. It proved much more difficult for East Colfax residents with language barriers.
That meant the vaccine had to come to East Colfax, which has few police or fire stations, libraries or rec centers that could host vaccine clinics. “We couldn’t anchor something in there,” Shlay said. “So we had to use small organizations that maybe aren’t reaching everybody.”
One of those was the Village Exchange Center, a nonprofit just a block off Colfax Avenue. The center offers benefits to immigrants, including a food bank that serves 4,000 people a day. Workers there inserted flyers about the vaccines into the bags of food they distributed and held information sessions.
“We have several pastors that have just said, ‘This is evil, and we’re not going to do it,’” said Amanda Blaurock, the center’s executive director. “And we respect that. We don’t go around decisions that community members have made. We just say, ‘We’re hosting it, and if you want it, we’re trying to make it as accessible as possible.’”
One census tract in the area has a recorded population of 4,389, and as of mid-June, slightly more than 1,300, or about 30%, were fully vaccinated. Health officials would need to get roughly 1,700 more vaccinated to reach their 70% goal. A month later, the rate had climbed to 34%, and health officials expect more dramatic gains in the coming weeks after people receive their second doses.
The initial success has buoyed interest in more transit-based vaccine clinics. Shontel Lewis, who represents the East Colfax area on the Regional Transportation District mass transit agency’s board of directors and spearheaded its involvement, said future clinics might be held at park-and-ride locations and other bus stops in underserved areas.
“The approach is often cookie-cutter. We tend to go with the same strategies, and then, when no one comes, we just throw our hands up,” Lewis said.
If the goal is to get everybody vaccinated, she said, the interventions need to be tailored to specific communities. “Our approach might be different,” she said, “but our goal is the same.”

In Focus: Airbnb, Bargain or Bust?
Tumblr media
The last time I wrote about Airbnb (ABNB) was back in October 2020, shortly after the company filed its paperwork to go public. Not being one to chase overpriced and overhyped IPOs, I told anyone who would listen to get into Airbnb when it became public. Seven months after it's IPO the stock is trading well below it's high, but still above its IPO price.  At this price level is Airbnb a bargain or a bust?
The road to being a publicly traded company has been rocky for Airbnb, which I wrote about here. To condense it, let;s just start with 2020. In late 2019, all signs pointed to Airbnb going public in early 2020, but then the coronavirus hit and stopped travel dead in its tracks, causing investors and analysts who anxiously awaited the Airbnb IPO to wonder if the company would make it out of the pandemic.
“Chaos isn't a pit, chaos is a ladder” - Petyr 'Littlefinger' Baelish, Game of Thrones
The management team of Airbnb survived the chaos of 2020 and was able to take the company public last December. After being priced at $68 per share, the stock closed its first day of trading at $144.71. By February of 2021 the stock price had traded to over $210 per share. Even though the world hadn't completely beaten COVID-19, investors bought into Airbnb because they saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Investors understood that on the other side of the pandemic was a pent up demand for travel and vacation, which would benefit Airbnb.
Since closing at $216.68 on February 11, 2021 the stock has been in a slide, and now trades at $150.23
What's Behind The Sell Off?
In mid February of this year, there was more negative sentiment surrounding the company than positive sentiment, which played a role in the sell off. Just a day after the stock closed at an all time high, Wolfe Research Partners downgraded the stock to Peer Perform from Outperform while stating the company's lofty valuation could not be justified.
Shortly after the downgrade, the company reported its Q4 2020 results, which saw revenue of $859 million beat Wall Street's expectations of $748 million, but the company lost $3.9 billion during the quarter, which was above the $3.1 billion that the Street expected.
In addition to the downgrades and the company’s Q4 2020 numbers not meeting expectations, investors have had to rethink the reopening trade, the investments made in company’s that would benefit from life after COVID.
The Delta variant of COVID-19 has been a handful for places like the United Kingdom. Places like India and Brazil neverseemed to get a handle on the original variant of COVID-19. Just a few days ago Brazil reported 65,000 new COVID-19 cases and over 2,000 deaths within a 24 hour period. In the United States, Los Angeles is seeing a rise in coronavirus cases. Last Thursday the L.A. reported 506 new infections, the most since mid-April.
Tumblr media
Globally and nationally, we’re still fighting the coronavirus, which has been another pain point for Airbnb.
Oh, and have you noticed the increase in Vrbo commercials? For those not aware, Vrbo is Airbnb’s competition. The company has been around since 1995, but in 2019 got a makeover and a rebrand. Vrbo is owned by the Expedia Group (Expedia, Hotels.com, Travelocity, Orbits, Trivago).
Vrbo has been on a mission to get hosts and to make sure that the world knows they exist. Vrbo has aggressively gone after Airbnb’s top hosts in an effort to bring them over to the Vrbo platform, Vrbo has even offered to transfer a host’s Airbnb rating to the Vrbo platform. Besides going after Airbnb’s top hosts, Vrbo has increased its advertising
spending from $72 million in 2019 to $103 million 2020. For anyone who wasn’t aware of Vrbo pre pandemic, the company wants to make sure that they are aware of them post pandemic.
Downgrades, earnings per share misses, a possible reopening delay, and a motivated competitor has done a lot to knock the shine off of Airbnb.
There is a bull case however for Airbnb. In May, Yahoo Finance reported analysts upgrades of Airbnb. The consensus among the 30 plus analysts covering the stock was that revenue in 2021 would come in at $5.4 billion, which if met wouldbe a 63% increase from 2020’s revenue. The analysts did however cut their price target to $166 per share, which is only 10.6% higher than the current stock price. Needham on the other hand didn’t upgrade the stock, it maintained its buy rating on the stock with a $194 price target.
Airbnb currently has a $91 billion market capitalization, which trumps Hyatt’s (H) 8$ billion market cap, Hilton’s (HLT) $35 billion market cap, Marriott’s (MAR) $46 billion market cap, and Wyndham’s (WH) $6.9 billion market cap. Of those four major hotel brands, only Hilton and Marriott reported higher revenue than Airbnb in 2020, and all but Wyndham reported higher revenue than Airbnb in 2019.
Tumblr media
Based on the income statements of Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and Wyndham, there’s an area where Airbnb holds an edge and others that the company needs to get under control to really be of value to investors.
On average the cost of revenue as a percentage of revenue for Hyatt, Hilton, Marriott, and Wyndham in 2019 and 2020 was 62% and 69% respectively. Airbnb’s cost of revenue as a percentage of revenue for 2019 and 2020 came in at 42% and 52% respectively. But what Airbnb saves in its cost of doing business it spends it in selling, general, and administrative expenses. For Airbnb SGA in 2019 was 48% of revenue and in 2020 SGA was 68% of the company’s revenue. The other four hotels on average spent 25% of their revenue on SGA.
Airbnb’s CEO Brian Chesky recently reflected on the company’s big advertising spend ($1.17 billion in 2020 and $1.6 billion 2019), which is bundled into the SGA expense, and stated the company has no plans to spend that much on marketing again. It appears the CEO is keeping his word, as sales and marketing expenses for Q1 2021 decreased by 27% from where it stood in Q1 2020.
Improvement to Airbnb’s income statement and balance sheet will go a long way in making investors happy, but before pleasing investors the company has to please its hosts, which they’ve recently addressed.
Airbnb recently announced 100 plus innovations and upgrades to make the host and user experience better. The upgrades provide more flexibility to users, makes it easier for property owners to become Airbnb hosts, and provides better support for its hosts and guests among other things.
Bargain or Busts?
The travel industry is worth $3.4 trillion in revenue, Airbnb’s 2020 revenue represents less than a half of one percent of that $3.4 trillion figure. There’s a lot of room for Airbnb to grow, but with COVID-19 still lingering, Airbnb's immediate future looks hazy to some investors.
For me, I’m still all in on Airbnb for the long term. I’m not thinking about Airbnb capturing 2% of the $3.4 trillion travel industry, I believe they can capture .05% of the market over the next few years, and that alone could have a significant impact on the company.
Before COVID-19 I used to associate Airbnb with going away, going far away. I’m going to L.A. or Paris, or London, or Toronto and I want to have a long stay, I thought about Airbnb. Now, after dealing with COVID-19, I associate Airbnb with getting out of the city and going somewhere suburban for a few days, even it's in the same state that I’m in. I believe this is important to Airbnb, as it will allow them to stay in growth mode as the politicians work out who can travel to where and when.
When international travel does open up fully, I expect Airbnb’s growth to go into overdrive for a few reasons. One, I believe the pandemic has made people comfortable working away from work and companies comfortable with not physically seeing their people every day. I foresee a jump in the number of digital nomads, getting an Airbnb wherever they want and working remotely.
Flexjobs, a website dedicated to helping people find remote work predicts 36.2 million Americans (22% of the workforce) will work remotely by 2025, which is an 87% increase from the number of people working remotely before the pandemic.
Tumblr media
Lastly, I think when things are fully opened up, the population of people that I call the new millionaires, the people that made big crypto bets and big bets on bad names during the pandemic that paid off are going to spend that cash, and I think a sizable portion of it will be spent on travel, which will be another win for Airbnb.
Vrbo is coming, but there is enough room for more than one company in this space. How I envision work and travel changing over the next decade benefits both Vrbo and Airbnb, and makes Airbnb a bargain at its current share price. I remain extremely bullish on Airbnb as a long term investment.
