Minerva-The Unspoken Redemption
I am sure I am one of many who were not fans of Minerva when she first came out and even when she became a friend and member of Sabertooth once again. She is one of the characters that even now during the 100 year quest I feel very little attachment to.
I will say, all her fights are great. Her power alone and strength is one that can quickly get someone's attention and the Grand Magic Games definitely helped with this. I also recognize that she is a background character and so its just unlikely (not impossible) that she gets the same amount of development as Gajeel. This is just based off screentime alone.
Also little note: This will not count anything from 100 year quest. I figured at least some of my analysis should be good for those anime only people. I also feel like her scenes in 100 year quest isn't worth that trouble.
Tumblr media
Before I begin explaining Minerva's redemption, I feel it is highly necessary to explain the backstory of Minerva. It is no wonder why she turned into such a "lovely" person as her father raised her to be that way. He raised her to be someone unforgiving of weakness as she couldn't even forgive her own weaknesses. Day after day as she grew up she was forced to endure such harsh training from her own father.
We knew prior to this that Jiemma was not the greatest guild master and it has become clear that he wasn't going to be earning the "best dad" award either. Through one scene alone we learned that Minerva was told to kill a member of the Sabertooth guild and was let alone to find for herself after she didn't do so after watching her father kill the man.
Tumblr media
It makes me wonder if something happened to Minerva's mother to better Minerva's "future", or at least that is what her father would claim... anyways.
From her backstory we know that Minerva basically had no choice but to become the woman she is today. Does it forgive what she did? No. But we can take into account the reason why.
Tumblr media
I feel Minerva unfortunately suffers from being such a background character. Gajeel is given his redemption so easily because we've had time since he was introduced in chapter 47/episode 21. Meanwhile, Minerva was introduced much later and she is a part of the Sabertooth guild that we don't often get a look at unless Fairy Tail is there. I am one of many who would say "I will never forgive Minerva for what she had done." But we tend to forget that Gajeel did the same thing. It is upsetting because Gajeel became one of my favorite characters, but due to time and scene restraints the same can't be done to Minerva.
If we were given more time with Minerva, I would like to see her interactions with the Sabertoot hguild more. While I enjoy seeing her with Erza in a few scenes, my favorite scenes are those spent together with close friends. We see how much Sting and Rogue hold as far as respect goes for even though all the things she had done. Even Yukino still holds respect for her.
Tumblr media
We've had great scenes of Minerva in both the bad and good light. I must say, when she was a villain Mashima really knew how to make us hate her.
But what do you all think of Minerva? Maybe I changed your mind about her maybe not. I'm curious to hear your thoughts though.
Anyways, I'll see you all later in the Deep End!!!

Alright Now That I Finally Have Some Time
I think I’d better give some more info on this pjo AU i whipped up don’t I?
Especially on Natsu’s backstory, which i’ll put under read more for you guys
Now Natsu was a child of Hades (bet you weren’t expecting that were you?) along with his big bro Zeref 400 years previous and since the world was pretty crazy at the time for kids of the big 3, Hades being the very good dad carried them to live in the underworld.
There they lived pretty happy and content, experimenting and growing their powers. Zeref was more skilled at raising and manipulating the dead( and very experimental, doing stuff to the souls that made even Hades cautious of him) while Natsu’s demigod strength was his best aspect, ignoring the Stygian iron weapons he was given in favor of hand to hand combat.
But you know, kids in the underworld isn’t exactly the best idea because goddamn are they curious. Against Hades’ warnings they ventured into Tartarus under Zeref’s suggestion ( “You’ve wanted to do this for as long i have right Natsu? Think of what we’ll learn, what we can fight! Let’s go!!”) and it doesn’t go well. They got lost, horribly and every corner they turned led them to stronger monsters that they could barely escape from. Then the accident happened.
Trying to escape from some monster, Natsu fell off a cliff into the Phlegethon, the river of fire and perished in the flames. And in a messed up twist of fate, Zeref found his way out not long after. However death and tartarus will obviously screw with someone’s head, especially a kid. Getting chewed out by Hades means nothing when you’ve lost part of your mind.
Natsu’s soul still hung around after, but it just wasn’t the same. Zeref was torn with guilt and whoo boy if his experiments with spirits were messed up before them i dunno what to call the ones he did trying to resurrect Natsu.
So after a whole bunch of souls lost to this project he created a young body, made of some bits (like drakon blood and scales with some monster stuff mixed in) and was ready to take Natsu’s soul but it needed something else. So Zeref heads back to tartarus and bathes the body in the Phlegethon so with the power of fire infused in the body it’d never hurt him again. The fire bleaches his black hair to pink, i dunno how that makes sense but it does.
Zeref’s happy for the first time in years but it’s short-lived and followed by a series of unfortunate events (ha) which goes:
-He takes the body back up and binds the soul to it. As it bonds, he miscalculates and the fires start to burn away at the soul. Burning soul = screaming(Natsu and Zeref’s scream to clarify)
-Screaming brings furies, furies bring Hades.
-Hades sees crime against natural laws and epic god vs demigod fight ensues
-Hades wins, banishing Zeref to the fields of punishment but before that Zeref shadow travelled Natsu’s body to the upper realm (which is like about 18/19 years before the story ‘cause time runs differently in the underworld)
-Hades assumes the fire will continue to burn at the soul so he doesn’t pursue.
Plot twist, Natsu lives and through plot convenience he ends up being found by Igneel who takes him in because he smells like a drakon hatchling and there’s definitely something weird so he kept him close to keep an eye on Natsu, who he raises and trains as the fire Natsu was bathed in manifests as his powers.
Next series of events that follow:
-13 years pass, 2 half-bloods ,Jellal and Levy, on a quest find Natsu in the woods with Igneel, who passes away not long after.
-Natsu goes back to camp with them and well, kid with natural pink hair pretty much stands out so there are some whispers but he’s put in the Hermes cabin until he’s claimed.
-When the fire powers are found out, there’s an uproar but no claim means he’s still in the hermes cabin. Whispers turn to full blown convos and conspiracies about this kid.
-Natsu has nightmares about igneel dying and.........something else (the memories of his old life are barely there since that was the part of his soul that was burnt away, there are still shadows of them though). His nightmares of being consumed by fire leads to the cabin being burnt down several times
-After about the 8th time it burnt down, the decision was made to put him in hephaestus ‘cause that’s the only place that’s completely fireproof. It was a good decision to save the building but not the best for Natsu. (Hephaestus kids can be kinda savage when you mess with their stuff)
-So Natsu, as much as he loves the camp, lives a pretty shitty life where most kids skirt around him ‘cause well, he’s weird so he does the only thing he can do without anyone else, train. He trains almost all the damn time which leads to the main conflict in the fic.
It was bound to happen but not so soon. Continuous usage of his fire acted as a catalyst which when mixed with his non-human bits triggered that drakon transformation which he has no knowledge about.
Sooooooo, all of this basically leads up to the delicious angst i wrote.
Do i have more in mind? Definitely yes.(like how Zeref basically has a switch for Natsu which triggers the demon bits he has, basically making him go feral.Think Inuyasha demon form)
Am i gonna actually write this and maybe continue that pjo AU? Probably
But I might give out some more back stories on the other characters in the AU when i go off on holiday

Note
I'll copy and paste this here: I wish you would write a fic where Levy is possessed by dark magic. Maybe a fight afterwards. (levy vs lucy 😳or levy vs. gajeel😱 or both 🤔)
Listen these kinds of “one person is under evil control and must face the other” tropes are my fucking JAM.  So strap in cause we’re jumping right in.  Backstory?  Nope.  Angst.  Theres some evil book because of course.
--
“Shrimp?” Gajeel probed, tentatively.
Levy had gone still in front of him, her hands gripping the opened book in her hands with white knuckles.  The mission was to retrieve it, and here they were, but she had been still for almost a minute.  He thought she was reading it, and he was already impatient to get back, but something was off.  Something in her posture had shifted, but he couldn’t pinpoint it.
And when she didn’t answer him, he stepped forward to put his hand on her shoulder.  “Oi--”
What happened next was a blur, so much so that he never even knew anything could move that fast.  Let alone her.  The next thing he knew, fire had exploded into his face, and he recoiled backwards with a shout of pain.
“Ah, fuck!!” he roared, pawing at his face to try and throw off the lingering embers.  He felt the heat in his piercings, and the pain throbbed into his skull because of it.
His immediate instinct was to find Levy, because whatever had just attacked him could now go for her.  Protectiveness surged through him, and as soon as he had cleared his vision and pushed past the flash of pain, he searched for her.
And he found her.
Standing steady in front of him, her right hand poised in front of her, and blank eyes focused coldly on him.
There was no one else, just her.
Gajeel blinked, and then sniffed.  It was her scent, that was her, but there was something else.  It was mingled with something foreign, and the more he dwelled on it, the more he started to pick up the stench of fear.
“Levy, what the hell,” Gajeel started, slow.  Nothing changed on her face.  She stared right back at him with cold indifference.  “Levy!” he pushed, just before her hand started moving.
The mage spelled out the word ‘spike,’ and Gajeel had barely managed to jump backwards before a stone point shot up from the ground where he stood, tearing through his cloak.
Shit!  What the hell happened? Was there something in that book? he thought, his gaze drifting to the book that had been dropped behind her.  How the hell do I snap her out of it?
He wasn’t afforded a chance to try and figure out, because she was already moving, a dark energy swirling around her hands.  Quickly, she drew ‘spear’ with both hands, whatever was possessing her allowing her the ability to be ambidextrous.
Gajeel ran a wide circle around her as a barrage of dark points flew at him, more than what she should have been able to produce.  They flew with blinding speed, and he started to feel explosions of pain from multiple points as they grazed his skin, some deeper than others.  He cursed harshly, turning himself to iron as he continued to dodge the projectiles.
“Levy!  Snap out of it!”  he shouted at her, but it fell on deaf ears.  She stunk of fear, and though he couldn’t tell for sure in the dark and chaos, he swore he saw tears sliding down her face.
The spears stopped when he had fully shifted to his iron hide, and instead she returned to the fire.  More than the flash of before, the blaze that flew across the ground towards him rivaled the flames he’d faced from Natsu.  And the heat spread through him with such intensity that he started to feel the desperation.  He couldn’t dodge forever, and he needed to stop her somehow.  If it was to restrain her, or god forbid knock her out until he could figure something else out, but he was in danger just as much as she was. I have to do something, this is bad, I have to get her back!
And with that, Gajeel changed his path, and he surged through the flames towards her.  Pain and intense heat spread through his body, and he felt a very animalistic desperation claw through his mind.  If he stayed in these flames, they would kill him.
He had to stop her; if she couldn’t sign, she couldn’t attack.  At least, he hoped he was right.  he had no idea what was controlling her, and what else it had given her aside from a huge surge to her normal techniques.
She was already countering, and while her right hand maintained the fire, her left brought back a single spear.  Gajeel twisted, trying to skid and leap to the side, but it still tore through the top of his shoulder.  Right through his iron.  The dragon-slayer bellowed a roar of pain, but forced himself to keep trying to close the distance.  He was so close, and so desperate...
With his focus on her, he had not seen the very fire she cast eating through the book at her feet.
“Enough!”  He crashed into her, his hands taking hold of her wrists.  He didn’t know how to soften the collision, and he would apologize profusely for the bruises if...when he got her back to normal.  Bruises would be worth coming of of this in one piece.
With a final roar, both crashed to the floor, ending with him positioned over her and pinning her arms to either side of her, a pained snarl contorting his face.  In a blink, the fire was gone, and suddenly everything was quiet.
Quiet except for shaking sobs that choked out of the tiny figure pinned under him.
The foreign aspect to her scent had disappeared, the flames had disappeared, and the dark magic swirling around her had disappeared.  All that remained was the overwhelming scent of fear and salt.
Dumbfounded, he stared wordlessly at her face, trembling and full of terror.  Her eyes were no longer empty, instead they pleaded for something from him.  They were full of raw life that had been gone moments before, and as determined as he had been to get that back, the way she now looked at him tore the dragon-slayer in two.
There was only one other time she had looked at him like that.
“I-I-I don’t...I don’t know wh-what...” she choked out, pulling feebly against his grip.  “I tried...w-with the fire...” she tried to glance to where the ashes of the cursed book now lay.
Finally his body caught up to his thoughts, and he immediately released her, throwing himself backwards like he had been burned again.  His skin returned to normal, but he was covered in oozing gashes.
“I-it m-made me...” Levy sobbed, shakily trying to sit up, “I didn’t...!  I-I’m so sorry, I’m so--”
Seeing her so shaken, so afraid, Gajeel found himself moving again, drawn right back to her.  He didn’t question or give her a chance to say anything else as he scooped her up into his arms and held her tight enough to convince himself she wouldn’t be taken away again. “You’re okay,” he reassured her, and instantly she melted into his grip and buried her face in his chest.  “I got ya...”
