#monthly reading list #books #this is mostly a list of library books or things on my shelf that i ignored in my poetry frenzy #plus i keep being struck by a feeling insisting that this is the year i reread some anne books #though i waver between 'just reread rilla' #'start with anne of the island' #or 'start with anne's house of dreams' #whatever happens i'd skip 'windy poplars' and 'anne of ingleside' #the first because it's too much of a fall atmosphere #the second because it's a big more of a slog and because it's the one i reread most recently (and did enjoy--it's just easy to stall out) #and because you can skip both without messing up the timeline because those were inserted later

I love the Cruel Prince/Folk of the Air series so so so so so much, there IS SO MUCH ABOUT IT !! But one thing I continually keep thinking about which tears me apart is Madoc and Jude’s relationship. Tiktok keeps showing me art of them and it hurts me every single damn time.

He literally killed her parents but took her and her sisters in, and he was the *only* thing in the new world she had besides her sisters. The way she bonded with him in learning to be brutal, fighting.

This is a pivot haha but it makes me think of what Jamie Lee Curtis’ character says in Knives Out about her dad. Something along the lines of “to keep up with him or gain his attention, you (she) had to come up with your own language with him”.

How so many daughters have to find something that bonds them with their dad. How my own sister did everything she could to gain praise from my dad.

Jude needed Madoc. That’s all she had. Despite HIM being the reason her life was destroyed. Him being the reason she has to live in this world, be bullied and abused everyday, to fight and fight for her place and be constantly in a state of survival mode.

Knowing of his betrayal. Of the King. Of later, her. But still holding onto that.

It makes me think about how so frequently despite what our parents do to us we still, some part of us, wants their acceptance and love.

#i started this and finished it in mmmm about 5 hours? #I will be buying the others as SOON as I get home #i thought maybe i had just grown out of the books i liked or something #but nah. it just took me reading this to realize i literally haven't been reading the sort of books i like in YEARS #rich fantasy worlds (specifically with dragons) have ALWAYS been the most important thing in the world to me #that's literally all i read growing up. and outside of rereading a handful of redwall books i haven't read any of those in FOREVER #all the most recent stuff I've tried to read has been sci-fi or weird psychological stories #or nonfiction/heavily political stuff #or one fantasy book with dragons but it was about a 12 year old and had a sort of dragon i don't super care for and didn't even as a kid #and then i wonder why i have so little interest in finishing them :/ #there isn't anything wrong with those books but they just aren't what i enjoy and i know that so why do i keep forcing myself to read them?? #perhaps i should stop that and thus get back a hobby that i used to be love in the extreme

#I blame it on me reading so much about the Napoleonic wars recently #I’m reading The Lady Tars and I just saw a painting of the Battle of St Vincent and it kinda just clicked #and I thought about yeah all the people who’s stories are told are the officers and midshipman and those few who are recognised for #outstanding acts and such #but war’s war and the absolute horror that comes along with it #also I was a MASSIVE Poe and Stephen King fan as a kid #as much as I write fantasy and comedies and such - I got my roots in horror #the Fucked Up of True sort lol #ALSO I was just thinking about this book I read when I was 15 - the knife of never letting go #and having just been on a run of the Aubrey Maturin novels and a reread of Left Hand of Darkness #it was only inevitable I’d write something #I wanna write historical fiction but I always end up in horror territory lol #anyways I recently started listening to The Crane Wives! ‘Take Me To War’ is a banger #anyways #this isn’t for nanowrimo I just had to write it down before I forgot #I’m gonna redo it - the core of it got kinda muddy #also I’m high on a little coffee #feels good to feel creative again! #I’ve been so low lately I love it! #also I really like reading old logs and newspaper clippings about military actions and the numbers kinda got me thinking #impersonal violence man.
