I am in love with the wha cross guild designs. Can you say something more about them? Like the thought process behind them and stuff.
sure! What I focused on first is how Mihawk, Buggy, and Crocodile's motives and personality would translate into the WHA world (I need a loose story first to be motivated before delving into the design!)
tbh I think with one piece's characters so focused on freedom and living without constraint, all pirate characters would technically be brimhats LOL (and Coco's arc of realizing the flaws of the current insitution is quite similar to Koby and the marines).
Devil fruit powers are easy to translate into seals tattooed on the skin (hence wha!Buggy's seal on his chest letting him split his body and wha!Crocodile's on his hand giving him sand manipulation). Mihawk is more interesting since he doesn't have a devil fruit, so naturally wha!Mihawk also doesn't have tattooed seals. Another way for a witch to become a brimhat is dabbling in forbidden seals, so wha!Mihawk has cursed seals on Yoru instead (which makes him a brimhat without modifying his body)
As for cornerstone character traits in the original: Mihawk is the greatest swordsman, Buggy is… just vibing LMFAO, and Crocodile is ambitous/power hungry/looking to rule his own kingdom. Obviously the greatest swordsman title means nothing in WHA, so wha!Mihawk instead is a great artificer, with Yoru being the strongest magic imbued weapon in existence. I'd like to think Yoru's seals were initially within guidelines, but Mihawk felt those rules were suffocating Yoru's potential, which is when he started using cursed and forbidden seals instead, all for the sake of Yoru becoming stronger.
Buggy I'd imagine is kind of like how Iguin is introduced in Coco's past- as a solo traveling witch mingling amongst common folk rather than being in a community of fellow witches. I think he'd be addicted to that feeling of superiority he'd get from being a revered witch in the eyes of the common people, so he's probably the head of a traveling circus troupe (where he's the only witch) touring the countryside (keeping a relatively low profile in the realm of witches, never staying in one place too long so the Knights Moralis don't go after him). Buggy's definitely not as altruistic or eager to help those in need as witches are supposed to be in WHA society, but of course he'd put on a good show to entertain the masses.
Eolio mentioned something interesting in chpt 53 ("We can be as in the tales of yore. King and witch, side by side"). There might've been more references to this concept of a monarch/person in power with a witch as their advisor (I just can't find it at the moment a;sldkfs) but I'd imagine that's what Crocodile would be doing. Like Buggy, I think he also gets a sense of superiority by being alongside commonfolk (vs Mihawk who's goal is to genuinely just make the strongest weapon possible and not interested in mingling with others). But instead of Buggy's route of mingling with commoners, Crocodile would definitely go the more sinister route- find some easily manipulated king or high lord and get into his good graces, eventually becoming the witch operating in the shadows and whispering machinations in his liege's ears. We don't know much about the pennisula yet and how far the witches' institution reaches so I don't know the exact position of power Crocodile feels safe aiming for without the Knights Moralis coming for his ass (a ruler might be too obvious lol but then again Crocodile tried to take over Alabasta right underneath the World Government's noses so who knows).
As for the designs themselves: Mihawk's fluffy plume being reminiscient of a brushbug is what started this entire idea for me, so I knew I had to add that in somehow. For each character I picked an overarching motif/theme I wanted in the character design, as well as adding in WHA design elements. WHA characters all tend to have large cloaks to cover their body while writing seals, and even though Cross Guild is all brimhats, nobody starts out as a brimhat so I'd imagine a large cloak or something top heavy would still be familiar to them even if they don't care about covering seals anymore.
For Mihawk I leaned a bit more into the vampire theme than his usual (cloak silhouette is bat like, plus the additional crosses everwhere. His sleeves aren't exactly attached to his jacket (like OPLA) and I also added that detail in the pants haha. I think Yoru is the real star here with all the seals on it, the two big ones are actually modified seals from the Ars Goetia (since they're supposed to be cursed after all); the top one is Glasya-Labolas (manslaughter and bloodshed) and the bottom one is Ronove (taker of old souls). The flower pattern on his sleeves is also not as paisley looking since it doesn't fit with the WHA artstyle, but there's so much hatching that at the end of the day I don't think it mattered lol. His cloak is the least cloak like since he needs to be able to swing that sword HAHA also he's not interacting with normal humans much anyways, usually he only interacts with witches that try to challenge him. Personally I think wha!Mihawk is quite bad at drawing seals on the fly- his specialty is being able to carve complex ones on metal perfectly so they'd be suitable in a fight later.
Buggy I went full medieval jester mode (I always tend to lean toward that aesthetic for Buggy rather than Joker Batman anyways haha). A couple of star motifs here and there, as well as slashed sleeves to reinforce the slicing and dicing of his body. Overall there's just a lot of vertical and horizontal lines on his body for that purpose. I really wanted to let Buggy's beautiful hair down since WHA's style is lovely with that kind of flowing hair. Oh all three of them are also wearing slyph shoes!
Crocodile's coat is directly inspired from Iguin's (esp for that scale motif); overall I wanted to incorporate flowy ornaments for him since I'd be drawing a lot of flowing sand; hence all the tassels on his cloak and sleeves. Cutouts are there for him to use sand manipulation more effectively. I know in canon both for him and Buggy the clothes also are affected by devil fruit powers but I don't think that would be the case here- Buggy's clothes also probably have seals in them and no one would be able to see if he's on stage but I think for Crocodile, since he'd be working with normal humans more he does have to be more cautious about things (hence why he also has a more traditional cloak compared to the others). Sand hat for coolness also for convenience bc he can just dissipate the sand if he's trying to disguise himself (like how Ininia's ribbons can appear normal instead of brim shaped). I also gave him a smoking pipe instead of a cigar because the pipe can be used as a red herring of sorts- to outsiders it might appear the pipe being the source of power (like for Mihawk's sword) but Crocodile's sand manipulation ability has the same scope as canon.
ANYWAYS that's probably a way more detailed response than you expected but hopefully that was interesting to read my thought process behind things! even though i captioned it Cross Guild I guess it ended up being more East Blue/Alabasta saga personalities than actual post Wano Cross Guild dynamics haha

good evening!! i just came across your shop and you have SO many cute pins that i absolutely love. i was just wondering if you ever plan on restocking your witch hat atelier pins? my spouse fell in love with the brimmed hat coco and would love to get it if you ever do. thank you and have a nice day!
Typically I don't restock pins that are limited edition (you'll see "LE" somewhere in the listing description) since there's a capped amount per pin made, hence the edition size, but I'll sometimes do new variants in a new colorway or with different effects if I notice that there's high demand for a design after it's sold out
With that said, I've been promising to do a new variant of my Qifrey pin for a long time and I do plan to go through with that promise, I had originally planned to do so closer to when the anime comes out...but it's been almost 2 years since they first gave the anime announcement and still no news in sight, so I might bite the bullet and just go ahead and do the new variant soon so I don't keep everyone waiting 😅
As for brimhat!Coco, unfortunately I won't be restocking that pin, variant or otherwise 🙏 This one was sold mystery-style for halloween, and out of fairness to ppl who took a chance on preordering it when they had know idea what the art looked like I won't be restocking it (this also applies to the rest of my mystery halloween designs, such as Maka, Vampire!Vanitas, the deco*27 Miku hearts, and the twst 1st years set)

since you're also on the lovely WHA kick atm, I want to share with you my deep, abiding desire to cosplay as full brimhat dark coco in that gorgeous black dress with all the gold swirlies on it. which I won't do because I have a life. but I waaaant to.
Bro you are so so valid, that design is incredibly pretty
I have a deep desire to do a full qifrey cosplay, I even made a hat!!! And brushbug!!! But also, i have shaved all my hair off a while back and I cannot convince myself to buy a wig for the life of me so I shall wait till it regrows and I mean, the one time that I can cosplay and go out in that is Halloween so by then my hair will be looking like Qifreys again.

How about Witch Hat Atelier for the ask meme?
I heard it's getting an anime, so I will definitely be checking it out once it airs ^^
Wonderful choice!  In the spirit of really hoping you pick up the series someday, I will also provide a little context for my blorbos, skrunklys, et al. :3  All you need to know going into these is that there’s a society of witches that’s regarded as helpful and altruistic but also hides the secrets of magic from the rest of the world, and the series is about a young outsider entering this society and wrestling with the cognitive dissonance therein.  The Pointed Hats follow the law, the Knights Moralis are a subset of Pointed Hats who enforce the law (they have the power to memory-wipe and exile people), and the Brimhats are any witches on the fringe who reject Pointed Hat laws and practice dangerous forbidden magic.
blorbo (favorite character, character I think about the most):
Coco, the main character!  It’s my opinion that main characters must be incredibly hard to write well, considering how often I’m underwhelmed by them.  Coco is a fantastic protagonist, though, and I really love how we get to see her worldview grow and/or shrink in real time with every harsh reality she faces.  A lot of the tension in WHA hinges on the possibility that she’ll join the Brimhats, which I would really love to see.
Also tied with Coustas, who started as a seemingly inconsequential bystander/casualty who would be forgotten in most manga and is now arguably the most important vehicle for the story’s themes.  Don’t want to spoil anything big here, but the way his arc has played out so far is just … intensely cathartic in a way I haven’t experienced in a while.
scrunkly (my “baby”, character that gives me cuteness aggression, character that is So Shaped):
Iguin, the main Brimhat antagonist!!  He’s aggressively Shaped, honestly, and all because of the cool/scary/somewhat goofy costume he wears.  I adore his vibes.
Also Sasaran, a minor ally of Iguin!  He’s also very Shaped, but not really by choice; he accidentally permanently transformed himself into a cat-man with forbidden magic. :/ it happens
Coustas again — wonderful character design, really
Tetia (one of the girls Coco’s learning magic with, basically loves making people happy and has curly pink hair), she’s soooo cute and endearing
scrimblo bimblo (underrated/underappreciated fave):
Tartar!  I wrote a whole impassioned post about it already, but yeah, he’s really the best.  I love when characters actually surprise me, and Tartar might be the most surprising character in the series with how much depth he brings to the story.
glup shitto (obscure fave, character that can appear in the background for 0.2 seconds and I won’t shut up about it for a week):
Cheating a bit here, but I also absolutely obsess over this depiction of random Brimhats, even though most or all of these representations probably aren’t specific characters we’re going to meet.  (You never know, though …)  I love the idea that there is a large and vibrant (and honestly, probably very chaotic and #cringe) Brimhat subculture out there waiting to be explored.  I just think they’re neat :)
Tumblr media
poor little meow meow (“problematic”/unpopular/controversial/otherwise pathetic fave):
Who could it be but Sasaran?  Really, look at him.  He’s a literal pathetic wet cat.  He’s a goofy little meow meow.  He loves hurting random people, including innocent kids, with forbidden magic.  He has no redeeming qualities as far as I can tell, but that doesn’t make him any less deserving of my affections.  Honorable mention for Iguin ofc, but no one is doing it like Sasaran.
Tumblr media
horse plinko (character I would torment for fun, for whatever reason):
Easthies :) To put it diplomatically, Easthies is solely dedicated to his job as a witch cop and the ethical principles it’s built around, so ofc he deserves the horse plinko ^^ (tbh I am Not opposed to “““redemption””” for any or all of the Knight Moralis in whatever form that might take, but only if this guy gets plinko’d)
Also Beldarut (a whimsical and politically important Pointed Hat guy), though I really have nothing specific against him.  I mean I think his worldview is kinda cowardly and ultimately harmful, but like. he has a fine personality.  I shouldn’t want to torment him for fun, but I do.
eeby deeby (character I would send to superhell):
Uhhh any of the minor characters who are obviously shitty to kids (Sasaran gets a pass bc he’s a skrunkly little meow meow, ofc)
Thanks for the ask!!  I really like talking about this series and I hope the anime brings in new readers ^^

wow i just marathoned-read through witch hat atelier after you were posting about it and im blown away
ISN’T IT SO GOOD? i love all the characters, relationships (especially coco & agathe and qifrey & orugio), and themes. honestly im so enraptured by these themes, like
the responsibility adults have to be good to children. they need to nurture them, be good to them, and be kind and forgiving if they are teachers/caregivers of them, and even if they aren’t they still need to respect their roles in society. it’s repeatedly emphasized that adults need to care for children - orugio yelling at qifrey for almost chasing after the brimhat & generally just pushing him to be the good professor his students see him as, eunie’s teacher being punished explicitly for being a bad teacher, and the ways qifrey teaches his students! how all the adults are so conscious of their duty to the children in their care!
the themes on learning something new/developing a new skill, talent, collaboration! for example, agathe learning how collaboration and mistakes can be beneficial, and when orugio tells her that her need to prove herself must come secondary to helping the common folk, as is their responsibility as witches! the narrative allowing riche to retain her individuality while also learning that she has to move outside of her comfort zone if she wants to be effective in a wider array of situations!
the themes on disability... i’m honestly really impressed! sage bel, who uses a really cool magic wheelchair - i didn’t even realize it was meant to be a mobility aid until coco visited his chambers and he very casually moved around while making tea, it was a very normalized and chill way of demonstrating that he’s paraplegic, and it’s not like. made a big deal out of, while still being present. tartah, who has a vision impairment, and the narrative emphasizes that he is skilled in his work and very knowledgeable but he’s just not accommodated, and that witch society is unkind to him! how he and coco find a spell to accommodate his impairment that doesn’t “fix” him but instead allows him to apply the knowledge he has! [SPOILER] also has a vision impairment, and that one’s more about how witch society and the way magic is set up in this world shuts out those with vision impairments. the narrative continually demonstrates the way that the society itself excludes people with vision impairments in structural ways (although it’s ironic that this is in a manga, which is an inherently visual medium). i’m interested to see where that plot goes!
i’m also just so into the worldbuilding... the strict rules that witches set in place for themselves and the disadvantages those bring. i feel that it does a good job demonstrating why the witches have so many strict rules (war crimes! the gold people! human experimentation!) while also showing that these rules are a double edged sword. orugio is so clearly a moral center of the story, and his special little chapter where he goes to the normal world is so excellent. i love orugio so much. qifrey lured me in, but orugio is such a Good Person, who prioritizes helping people but also isn’t stupid and knows which rules he should be following. he’s just so great!
i also just really like the way it continually presents that one doesn’t need to adhere to orthodoxy nor go over to the dark side... and that true strength lies in collaboration, supporting each other, and letting everyone use their own strengths and specialties in order to succeed and help others. the scene where she has to choose between the tower of books and going to safety, and instead chooses to draw a straight line - her personal skill! mwah. poetic cinema.
i also love how this is a world of Gender. the two main adult male characters only ever wear billowing skirts. i think the first time we see a main adult character wearing pants is on alaira, a woman. also, it’s so cool to see black and brown people in a manga. suzie’s design is so cute!
anyway. witch hat atelier is only 41 chapters + a couple chapters of a spinoff where the two teacherdads make meals together very domestically while all the kids are asleep. PLEASE READ WITCH HAT ATELIER

Quite a few people asked who Qifrey could have been talking to when he had that shady-sounding conversation all the way back in Chapter 2. It’s hard to prove since that communication device never shows up again, but I think it’s implied that he was talking to Beldarut?
Tumblr media
As the Sage of Education, he is the one with the authority to let Coco learn magic despite her status as a commoner. He even already created a precedent by taking Qifrey as his apprentice, so it makes sense for Qifrey to appeal to him and demand the same exception be made for Coco. We also know Qifrey received some kind of official go-ahead to teach her since he came back from the Great Hall with her uniform. And in volume 6, Beldarut notes that he and Qifrey have talked about Coco together.
The sense of unease we get from that scene in Chapter 2 could then, rather than hinting at Qifrey’s link to some illegal group (from what we see later in the manga, his morally ambiguous pursuits are very much a solo job), foreshadow the ambivalent relationship between Qifrey and his master.
Qifrey’s feelings towards Beldarut seem mixed between gratitude, resentment and understanding. He clearly suffered from the way Beldarut casually crushed his hopes of regaining his memories and his eye. At the same time, Beldarut is still the guy who saved his life and raised him, and Qifrey’s gifts to him, like the dragon-themed water-sculpting tea set in volume 6, hint at an enduring affection (my headcanon is that he broke Beldarut’s favourite tea-set in a fit of anger as a kid, and then designed a new one for him as an apology when he grew up).
I imagine Qifrey wasn’t 100% comfortable with having to call Beldarut for help despite their history. And conversely, for all that Beldarut loves his disciple, he trusts him very little. He probably picked up from that conversation that Qifrey was interested in the handmade magic book, and that he would be tempted to investigate the Brimhats for personal reasons. That gives some context for his offer to protect Coco from Qifrey later on.
