dirk mischaracterisation question

so I recently came across some posts dealing with frequent mischaracterisation of characters or dirk in particular, and they all seemed to agree that he's mostly mischaracterised as "gay as only personality trait and his life revolves around jake english's ass". now that was a surprise to me, as I was under the impression that the most prevalent misconception in this fandom that pertains to dirk is viewing him as some sort of a calculating mastermind and manipulator. is the gay thing really more common than the manipulator thing, or did I pull it out of (jake english's) ass?
