release the list
(i feel like i should mention these are all games ive personally played so if any of these make you go "why isn't [GAME] on here it's probably cuz i haven't played it. anyway)
(obligatory mention to hades/disco elysium/omori since they're some of my favorite games but im sure everyone already knows about them. they are lovely games and you should play them 👍)
darkest dungeon ($25) - turn based roguelike where you recruit mercenaries and send them on dungeon explorations and make sure they don't die of stress or starvation alongside the regular monster attacks. notoriously difficult. imagine bloodborne but turn based
Tumblr media
ftl: faster than light ($10)- real time roguelike where you control a small crew and pilot a spaceship on the run from a rebel fleet. manage power and weapons on your own ship while targeting critical systems on the enemy
Tumblr media
loop hero ($15)- a roguelike where your character will automatically walk in a loop while you use cards to add terrain with different effects such as spawning monsters to give you loot or increasing your healing. very unique with a beautiful pixel artstyle and banger soundtrack
Tumblr media
moonlighter ($20)- a roguelike rpg where you go dungeon diving and try to bring back as much loot as you can so that you can sell it in your shop
Tumblr media
shadows of doubt ($20)- early access. a first person sandbox detective simulator where each case is procedurally generated. randomly generates a town with npcs that all have names and addresses and relationships. put together clues from a crime scene and try to catch a killer before they strike again. work odd jobs between cases to keep yourself fed and housed
Tumblr media
ultrakill ($25) fast paced first person shooter with a style system ala devil may cry. you play as a robot fighting through the layers of hell. mankind is dead. blood is fuel. hell is full
Tumblr media
crypt of the necrodancer ($15)- a rhythm based roguelike dungeon crawler where you and your enemies are only allowed to move on beat. banger soundtrack goes without saying
Tumblr media
everhood ($10)- a rhythm based rpg where you play as a red doll who had their arm stolen and is trying to get it back. battles involve moving between 5 lanes to avoid enemy attacks. if you like undertale you'll like this
Tumblr media
spiritfarer ($30)- management and adventure game where you play as a spiritfarer who needs to care for spirits on her boat before leading them into the afterlife. incredibly charming and touching game. you will cry
Tumblr media
let's school ($20)- management sim where you build and manage a school and help students graduate by setting up different courses. addicting and has a very cute artstyle
Tumblr media
let's build a zoo ($20)- management sim where you. well where you build a zoo. a very silly game that includes a morality system where you can choose to be eco friendly and help repopulate endangered species or you can exploit your animals for their meat and produce. also has an animal splicing mechanic. haven't you ever wanted to make a giraffe with a duck head
Tumblr media
the wandering village ($25)- early access. a city builder with the twist that you live on the back of a giant wandering beast named onbu. you help care for onbu as he wanders though different biomes that force you to adjust your resource production as some things become unavailable (such as water in a desert)
Tumblr media
frostpunk ($30) a survival city builder where you build around a central core and try to prevent everyone from freezing to death in progressively colder temperatures
Tumblr media
monster sanctuary ($20)- a metroidvania style creature collector with a unique combo meter that will continue to build and increase your damage based on the number of "hits" you can perform (healing buffs and shields also count as hits) and each monster has different skill trees that you can upgrade and customize
Tumblr media
coral island ($30)- farming life sim with a unique underwater area. you work to help restore the island after and oil spill ruined the surrounding ocean. i should mention that although this game is technically not in early access it is still unfinished and missing large chunks of gameplay/interactions/story. however there is still a healthy amount of content and is still a fun game as it is
Tumblr media
apico ($20)- a beekeeping sim where you keep bees to make and sell honey while also breeding and releasing them to help restore their numbers in the wild
Tumblr media
spirittea ($20)- a management and life sim where you manage a bathhouse for ghosts and help the townsfolk who think they're haunted (they're right). basically a cross between stardew valley and spirited away
Tumblr media
cloud meadow ($20)- early access. this is a porn game ⚠️ a farming sim where instead of regular animals you have anthro characters and you can breed them either yourself or with each other and have them help in combat or on your farm. very cute artstyle and amazing animation work

i finally played through violence earlier tonight and it was legitimately some of the most fun i've had in a video game in a very long time. i don't know if it's my favorite layer in terms of raw level design (wrath is hard to beat for me) but in terms of aesthetic and themes ? it's not even close.
if you haven't, you should play ultrakill. now.

Hey! I'm considering playing Ultrakill, because the way you talk about it makes it seem really interesting! But I was wondering how coordinated you need to be to play it-- I'm worried that if I were to get Ultrakill that I wouldn't have the coordination to do so, and I haven't played a whole lot of FPS games before.
Thank you! And your thoughts about the game really have made it seem like a lot of fun! /gen
aw, thank you so much! it IS fun!
so, ultrakill by nature is really fast-paced with a lot of enemies and projectiles hurling towards you. the controls are a bit floaty so the player has a chance to keep up with it on normal and violent difficulties. which means it'll take a few levels to get used to. i'm unsure if i'm just lying to myself here but i've played a few FPS before ultrakill and i've noticed it is a LOT easier to land a bullet into an enemy - i assume the hitboxes are a bit bigger? but i can't confirm for sure. i'm not as accurate in other fps games as i am in ultrakill, personally.
you have a few options if you want an easier time!
the game has hitscan weapons and weapons that have an AOE and can deal damage quick to a group of enemies. considering how many weapons and weapon variants it has, you can adjust your play style however you like (though you Do have to play through more than half the game to acquire some of them). the moveset's versatile also.
there are easy difficulties which generally slow the game down - projectiles flying towards you aren't as quick and enemies take longer between attacks. you can also adjust it so boss fights operate under a specific difficulty different from the main game, if it's them in particular that give you trouble
accessibility options allow you to turn on auto aim, adjust how much damage you take, how fast the game is, it can give enemies silhouettes, give you infinite stamina and also remove some quirks that can make it a bit harder to play like hard damage where you can't heal to full health for a bit.
if you aren't sure how it'll be like, ultrakill has a demo you can play! hope this was helpful

alright, i looked trough your blog and it is quite fascinating both for original parts of your narrative and how it seems specifically based off of ultrakill plot as of 6-2. with later versions will you plan to edit your AU to fit with new narrative elements or you prefer to keep it true to how it is now?
on the note of newer narrative elements, what is your interpretation for mind of hell? it really does seem that if ultrakill has a true main antagonist then it is hell itself. and with current way how it was characterized it seems to have "inherited" the world from god and is in complete control over current situation. angels are lost without gods plan and just try to make the same motions as before. humanity may have actually been ended by hell's design, even with how much the earths machines act as a force of nature hell seems to comfortably channel them like water and using for its own purposes and entertainment. so far hell restrained itself only for its wins to be more cathartic (various "uprisings" on different layers), and so far is the most in control and very distinctly from everyone else is absolutely enjoying its time
so yeah, i am really curios on your take on hell's mind in both official material and your AU since i saw only very passing mentions for it in your posts
p.s. absolutely love your art, your character designs are immaculate❤️
Tumblr media
ooooo good questions tbh...i've definitely thought a lot about what will happen with the au as ultrakill reaches its end and what i'll do about elements obviously becoming unfit compared to the story. i think it really depends on how much it's going to be off, but i will be honest in saying i would have a tough time abandoning my ocs if official versions of michael, raphael, uriel, or lucifer are introduced! i think of course they would be well done and i would actually love to see them in canon, but i think it would cause a divergent au in that case. because i would love to explore how this au might fit into whatever becomes canon, but i've just developed the world and characters too much to leave the au behind as it is now. overall though, i just need to see how it ends and what it introduces to know where i might want to go, if i'd want to do a properly canon-divergent au when everything is said and done, or if i might just...stick with a canon-divergent from 6-2 onward. it's funny bc i actually was nervous about this just with layer 7 dropping, so i can't imagine how anxious i'll be for the last 2 layers! esp with lucifer looming in treachery - i think it's very up in the air if any of the other archangels will play a role in the game at this point, but more about lucifer is highly likely to come imo so!!! it's a big waiting game to find out!!
you're right in that i haven't done too much with hell, though i am interested in it as a character - i have considered it more with lucifer becoming much more of an element in the au, as he has spoken with it constantly and hell is sort of...in love with him, in an abstract way. it views him still as one of the most beautiful works it has, the first bright and radiant thing it had ever seen in its misery, but hell has become utterly engrossed with the cruelty of humanity. while lucifer was some celestial god that fell to it, humanity had minds much like it, and so it fell in love with them in a way it could understand. hell is always searching for more, an artist always looking for inspiration while holding lucifer as its muse. it's the capacity they connect with on the most, both great creators with god's spark in them, and admittedly, in his suffering, lucifer sometimes understood hell's work. but lucifer was secure, lucifer it had always to speak to, but increasingly it whispered the brutality of mankind, the wonderful inventions of their minds and the horrible works of their hands it began to copy. it hooked itself into the terminals they installed, and so lucifer gained all the knowledge of machines through their internal circuit. and when mankind was wiped out, hell became master in a world run by automation with all the creators gone from their servants. it has all it wants, and it indulges in testing its creations upon the machines and the husks of mankind in such tangible joy that an abstract like lucifer could not bring to it. lucifer it relates to in hatred, in his deep, abyssal loathing of the god that trapped him here, but even that is something more abstract to hell than the brutality of humanity - lucifer hates perfectly, he hates with the mind of god, and it is not met precisely by hell as hell was born into what it is.
so what then can hell feel when lucifer is released from it, when the dragon is cut down and its flesh severed from treachery's? this is really where i want to explore the relationship between lucifer and hell, what they are to each other - hell is a take on "this place loves you", but it is entirely malignant, noxious and harmful, while lucifer recognizes it as the hideous creation he fell trying to destroy, yet it is now irrevocably his home, the one entity he now knows. they are tangled up in each other, lucifer in an obvious sense but hell now cannot bear to lose its little spark of god's light. something in his beauty sustains it, it pulls at him constantly now that he's partially left it, and lucifer is stranded not knowing what decision to make. he still hears it speaking to him, esoteric fragments made up of the ambient noise of its body, but what can he do with it now? it is alive, sentient, a being put into a wretched position by god which condemns it for how antithetical it is to the fulfillment of all other creations. lucifer wanted it gone. he protested against it all those eons ago. but now he is frozen by choice, seeing it behave as some evil god yet knowing it cannot be any other way. what is fair then? to find some way to kill it? to cut off whatever constitutes its brain? to reason with it? try to change its very essence? lucifer must work through the possibilities while accepting hell, in so many ways, is the place he now wants to be. free at last, but once more full of despair. how can he kill his home and what might be his only friend? how can he reason with it, when he once tried the same with god and was struck down? how can he change it when he is just a pale shadow of what made something so monstrous in the first place? yet he fears hell will grow angry in its stasis, in running out of victims for its cruelty, and act out in retaliation

My only impression of Ultrakill is that it has hyperviolent robots and a gay angel. No jokes, if I play it, what am I expecting as a casual gamer. If its just an action game I'm not interested.
The main gimmick of the game is that you can only heal by getting blood from enemies. So get in there!
It's an FPS built around playing "stylishly" which means you "should" be doing fancy movement and combos, its not required to do that, but knowing some basic info makes it easier. By that I just mean understanding how the guns work, how to avoid hurting yourself, and enemy weaknesses and resistances. Levels are relatively short and meant to be replayed so you can practice and find secrets. Also there are secret un-serious levels that are completely different than the base game.
The best comparison I can make is Doom Eternal but with unlimited ammo (instead you have cooldowns) and less strict rules for countering certain enemies. If you haven't played Doom Eternal idk what else to compare it to other than Turbo Overkill which, despite the name, is a different game.
The first 2/3 of this vid is a pretty good showcase. It is an edit so it's overly flashy on purpose, but its more or less what to expect once you learn how to combo. You don't have to do anything like this to beat the game tho. The last 1/3 is uhh very edited, you can ignore that part. (music isn't from the game)
Lots of flashing lights, if that is an issue then you definitely should not play it or watch the vid.
youtube
If the vid doesn't seem up your alley then you probably won't like the game. If it interests you, but seems too fast, there are a lot of accessibility options to slow things down, help with aim, make visuals clearer, etc.
It might be kind of hard to tell what is going on but the player randomly punching is parrying their own bullets/coins for damage lol also the game freezing for a bit is on purpose, not part of the edit.
If you are still interested but unsure, there is a free demo on steam.
As for story, yes it's there, no there isn't a ton. For reference, the player character is silent and it's not really about them, it's about the gay angel :) You'll spend most of your time blowing things up more than anything. Don't expect actual cutscenes. All you'll get is environmental story telling, some paragraphs in books, boss monologues (2 of whom a new player will not meet anytime soon), and terminal entries. Also there was some ARG stuff but... not relevant to a new player.
Also I should mention: the game isn't complete yet. Its still missing the last 2 parts of the final chapter. First 1/3 of the final chapter came out last month.

hey ...... the wip snippet . i know i already requested one but what if i did another. imagine
Ultrakill | The Kamen Rider Crossover Nobody Asked For <- this one :3
[ask game] :3 woag
ohhh hhough this one . skeleton in my closet that rattles at me menacingly from time to time. there is a high likelihood this one will either never see written completion in a way I see fit, or I will try to draw something for it, because this is one of those ideas that is just. lurking in the back of my brain always but it's never a full beginning-middle-end plot. I think it deserves to be Seen, Eventually
very very little is written in the actual doc and what is written is probably going to be deleted and rewritten. need to find a balance between worldbuilding and actual story because it's from Gabriel's POV and that has weird holier-than-thou bureaucracy. BUT the jist is:
the Council serves as a very powerful organization that carefully picks and chooses who can be a Kamen Rider. it is treated as a highly esteemed position, and Gabriel is expected to never leave his Rider form (though it can exhaust him because they're. not convenient in daily life,) and always be ready to get sent out to deal with crime or patrolling. his identity is stripped from him, and he is not considered a person beyond a Kamen Rider, a vigilante-ish figure who does what he's told without question, a weapon.
V1 and V2 are artificial Kamen Riders built to surpass the power of the Council. I haven't fully settled on who made them, likely human scientists (could add a healthy flavor of robot-war-is-threatening-to-happen in this setting here). V1 is an escapee that was meant to be scrapped because it could not be controlled, and springs around causing mayhem. V2 was either released to destroy V1, or escaped also, although for budding-self-awareness reasons and not kill-all-humans reasons. V2 here is a lot pettier than canon V2 because its predecessor is pretty openly running around and it has self-esteem issues because instead of being too murderous, it's not murderous enough.
Gabriel is sent to destroy the weird threat skittering around, attacking not just humans and Council staff ("angels" are just,, lower-leveled Riders I suppose) but machines that it SHOULD share a common goal with, but it does not care who gets in the way of its bullets. He doesn't realize V1 is a machine and has a crisis about that, and he didn't know V2 existed until it shot in from nowhere to attack V1. overall Gabriel is having a terrible time questioning what it means to be a Kamen Rider etc etc. he has his little gay awakening when V1 beats him in a fight
Mirage is canon. I don't know HOW Mirage would be canon. maybe a hologram or an evil V1 that just. ended up an existential young woman. but she is canon. vital information
I feel like I need to do more tinkering with the setting, what role the prime souls and the ferryman might play, and make a nice and tidy checklist for plotpoints . the kamen rider formula was not built for being written out. this has been in my brain for a year so someday it will be real or else I think I will be cursed
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bonus year-old discord WIPs that may or may not be familiar (looking at these is killing me, ). the only reason I am showing these is because the files are now lost so if I ever had to touch the OG comic idea again I'd be doing it from scratch so these might as well see some glimmer of daylight

2. Album of the year?
I've listened to a lot of great albums this year, but if I'm sticking to ones I found in 2023, then I'll go with the Chicory: A Colorful Tale soundtrack! It's a great mix of absolute bangers with some really nice music, and it has plenty of variety between all of the tracks! I especially like Abandon Me and Gulp Swamp :)
8. Game of the year?
Oh boy, it's hard to choose just one. I played so many great games this year that choosing just one to be my game of the year would feel like a disservice to the rest, so I'm just gonna list all of my favorites that I started this year :D
Warframe
Easily my biggest timesink of the year, I started Warframe in April and have put nearly 560 hours into it already. It's gameplay is just so satisfying and addicting once you get past the initial hurdle of the new player experience, and is probably the least predatory F2P game I've ever seen in my life. It's just been an absolute blast and I'll absolutely be putting more time into it in 2024!
Lethal Company
Probably not a big surprise, but Lethal Company is insanely fun. I've been playing quite a bit with some of my friends, and every session is an absolute blast and can send me into hysterics at some points. Plus, I love the monster designs :)
Chicory: A Colorful Tale
An awesome game that's really fun and puts out a great message, I thoroughly enjoyed my time with Chicory! Great gameplay and soundtrack, highly recommend it!
Chants of Sennar
Very enjoyable puzzle game about deciphering languages! There was one part in particular that completely blindsided me and was easily the highlight of the game for me, but I won't spoil it just in case anybody reading this wants to play it themselves
Ultrakill
Also probably not a big surprise if you've looked at my posting activity in the past few days. Extremely fun gameplay, awesome character designs, great music, etc. :)
Honorable mention to all of the games that I didn't start this year but I still played and obsessed over, like Battlefield 1
11. Something you want to do again next year?
Tough question, since there's not really anything super special I did this year that I haven't done before, but I suppose I do want to try cooking more! I've been more and more interesting in cooking and baking ever since I made empanadas earlier this year, so I wanna try finding more recipes and making more stuff :D
23. If you could send a message to yourself back on the first day of the year, what would it be?
Another tough question! I think for me personally, not a lot changes between the first day of the year and the last, so I wouldn't really have many serious things to say since we're basically in the same position. I think one thing I would say is to try not to sacrifice myself too much to other people. I took a lot of mental health hits this year by essentially acting as a therapist for people (By my own decision, absolutely nothing to do with them), so I think I would tell myself to take it easy. I don't have to solve every issue, and as much as it pains me to see my friends in pain, I would often be in more pain after hearing their struggles. That isn't to say I'd completely shut myself off from hearing them out, but I would try not to overextend myself emotionally in these circumstances. That is the struggle of being as much of an empath as I am

bro what’s your top 5 games and why. Include honorable mentions if you wish!!!
uaaaaa -undertale/deltarune (i was literally drawing undertale when i started this blog and i still haven't stopped appreciating it/picking up official merch for it on occasion.) -portal 2 (i like the robots. hilarious writing. very good) -minecraft (slowly developed lots of buddies from it, always something new to mess with in it if i feel like it) -ultrakill (current interest, might fall off the top layer of my consciousness by next year but i like brainrotting its themes and parallels and how it provides information and WHAT information it gives you and- oh yeah also fighting gabriel is always fun for me.) -uhhhh inscryption (the spooky deckbuilder with meta elements and a very divorced group of 4 ....beings. i liked it enough for it to be my first game w/100% steam achievements.) honorable mentions to: -starbound for the approx. 300 hours i got in it -half life series for it being interesting streaming it on twitch with all the goofs it entailed, as well as it being what i consider my first fps shooter -a hat in time merely bc i really like the snatcher. conductor's also cool -the stanley parable because it's cool but i never bought it bc i already watched all the possible endings and it didn't seem worth playing after -madness:project nexus for being a game i'd LIKE to have/play but i have mac so uhhh rip. did do some 2 player shenanigans with bud via the steam...game link... thingamabobit tho and had a good time aside from the input lag. however i will be honest i wouldn't care to play it if i never got into madness combat -all the pokemon games i've played over my life (black was my earliest and dearest, though as of recenter i've liked legends arceus best) -stardew valley for the funtimes i've had in running around on a multiplayer farm (unfortunately i don't care much for its characters) -dead cells, oneshot, legend of zelda:botw/totk

1 for Lies of P and your other fandoms (how yould you forget Pino and friends? xD)
Omg you're right I blanked and forgot to list that in the tags MY BAD JFHDHD
1. List 3 positive things about your current fandom(s)
I guess I'm gonna organize these by fandom lol
Pokemon:
- Diversity! Since it's been around for so long, there's tons of fics to read. If you can think of it, someone has probably written it. There's a Mewtwo fic I found in college that's basically a retelling of the events of the first movie, but holy shit it's written so beautifully it made me cry in front of my friends rjrhdgde. It's a dense read, but still one of my absolute favorite fics to this day. That's just an example of things you can find!
- Sub-fan bases. Basically, if you're a big fan of a certain Pokémon, a type of Pokémon, one of the games, etc., you're going to find your people very easily. Kind of falls under the first one a bit but ya know lol.
- Some of the cutest and also the most badass fanart comes out of this fandom. I have both art of a Sylveon with a lollipop and art of Mewtwo breaking out of their armor from the first movie. The duality of man djrhdgs
SoulsBorne
-Maybe I've gotten lucky and just found really nice people, but so far my experiences in the community have been largely positive! I've met some of the loveliest people by posting my Dark Souls and Bloodborne fics, and it really got me back into writing OCs again (you know that's my lifeblood lol)
-Character and lore analyses. Not that I agree with all of them, of course I don't, but if you want an analyses of anything in these games, there's some mad lad out there that's done it, whether it's a post or through an entire fic. Gives you tons to think about!
-ART!! Holy shit there's so many amazing artists in this community. We don't talk about how much SoulsBorne art I've snagged at conventions (I got more of it and Elden Ring stuff at Magfest don't look at me fjfhdhd)
Lies of P
-I haven't been in this fandom for long, but so far everyone I've met has been very sweet! They're also super OC-friendly. I can't tell you how many Stalker and Puppet OCs I've seen, among others, it's really amazing!
-Probably gonna say this for all of my fandoms but the ART OMG. There's so much gorgeous fanart floating around for this game it's insane. Still on the hunt for more Romeo pieces tho rjrhehe
-Headcanon diversity. Do you want a totally mute P? One that talks sometimes? One that's Had Enough? What I'm getting at is there's a P out there for everyone! People have been exploring all the different character angles on him and it's wonderful to see.
Ultrakill
-THE HYPE. Since this is an early access game still in development, the hype that cranks up every time an update is announced is INSANE. I don't think I've ever seen this level of it for an indie game. I got in just in time to witness this for the Violence update and the rush it gives you seeing everyone so excited is amazing!! It helps that every single update has just been an absolute banger. We have reason to be super excited, the devs do stellar work!!
-LORE. Do you wanna feel like Charlie at the corkboard in It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia? Because that's where I'm definitely at right now. Since we're in the last act of the game, there's so much speculation and so many theories about how the game will end. On top of that, people have been playing in the lore sandbox ever since this game started. I know I've def been up at night wondering how the hierarchy of Heaven works and what certain layers of Hell were like before Certain Events TM (I'm being vague because I know at least one person wants to play this bear with me lol). Basically there's tons to explore and the community collectively goes insane about different bits, we have fun here lmao
-I'm bundling art and memes into this one because oh my GOD. The tonal whiplash is a rollercoaster ride. You can go from the most heart-wrenching art of Gabriel you've ever seen to a piece that goes "V1 is a shrimp now" and sometimes you just need that snap back to some levity. The memes are absolutely top-tier. It helps that the voice actor for Gabriel already does memes and shitposts on his YouTube channel, so he just carries that over for Ultrakill stuff sometimes and y'know what? This game is dark, I'm gonna need these memes for when the ending makes me bawl like a baby. The Violence layer already has me feeling the creeping sense of dread (if you know you KNOW).

games
idk what kinds you like so here’s a few
fighting: guilty gear strive (fun and flashy but very fastpaced), soul caliber 6 (top tier character customization but low playerbase), if youre into jojo then heritage for the future is free on fightcade (might have to follow a tutorial or two though)
deckbuilding: slay the spire (hard to get into though), inscryption (also leans into the next category a little, both because of vibes and the OLᓍ₴♅▩—
horror: lost in vivo (another ps1-styled silent hill inspired game but actually really good), voices of the void (kinda funny at times but gets under your skin quickly - also free if i remember right)
fps: ultrakill (cmon. i had to mention it at least once), payday 2/3 (idk shit about 3 yet so can’t vouch there but i know payday 2 was awesome and i bet even more good stuff got added since i last played), any of the borderlands games
other games that idk what to classify them as: garry’s mod, portal series if you haven’t already, no more heroes series, terraria, if you have minecraft then hypixel skyblock is nice for on-and-off playing since minions work while you’re offline
the Niche/Forgotten Stuff: dicey dungeons (a different take on the deckbuilding archetype), RUINER (cyberpunk beat-em-up that is immensely fun - major flashing lights warning though), killer7 (old actually-ps1 game made by the same dude behind the no more heroes series), hyper light drifter (and the sequel coming out soon, hyper light breaker), FURI (great boss rush game with tons of collaborating artists), fuser (now abandonware so you can get game + all dlc free online easily, plus the modding scene is crazy and only getting started)
Hell yeah and thank you anon :)
Oh yeah thank you for reminding me of inscription, I still need to get that the next time I feel like dropping some money on games.
Also gotta grab Ultrakill at some point 🙄 Damn my money worries.
I can protect you from one thing on this- DON'T BUY PAYDAY 3 YET lmao.
Bit that bullet, got my refund, at least wait until they get the servers running and if you're actually into payday (like me) maybe wait quite a bit longer because there are Core And Fundamental Issues with things like progression or how matchmaking is formatted that really need addressed- do like me and look back at 2 :P
I have gmod and a 'good enough' supply of valve games to run it (got a bundle of most of their stuff that's gmod-related) but, outside of running around a couple maps, I haven't done jack in it- gamemode or sandbox- either. Just don't know where to start tbh.
Still need to go play no more heroes 2, let alone looking into 3 or checking which side games are worth a damn (last I heard one was trash mostly released to remind people that 3 was coming but remains to be seen when I give a damn). I loved NMH 1 and have 2 on hand, just need the motivation lol
Just got done doing a terraria modded playthrough, could always do another- minecraft I've never looked into specific server/mod stuff- only really played with friends- though could be fun to play with them again, good call :P
I don't remember if I own killer7... surely I do, I have fuckin' shadows of the damned and killer is dead and all kinds of junk, I have to have that.... watch it be the one I don't- I need to actually get around to playing all these instead of being stuck in my head not entertaining my hobby 🙄
Fuser is just gonna make me sad about getting a working rock band instrument around here being a pain in the ass 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

sadly I don't have time to make any art for ultrakill's birthday but I'll make a text post instead
discussion of self-repression (particularly with sexuality) due to religion below, it's pretty mild but putting a readmore just in case. also just a bunch of rambling sentimentality idk
I haven't been here long, I first played a bit of ultrakill back in march (just the prelude at the time) and then had to pause for a bit due to unavoidable circumstances, and I only got back into it a couple of months ago. but holy shit this game has done so much for me. aside from being a very fun time and a welcome distraction from some life stressors, its themes have resonated deeply with me in a way I really wasn't expecting them to
I feel a bit strange to put it this way, but I can't deny that it's been a healing experience for me. through playing the game and making fanworks, I've found an outlet for expressing facets of myself that I previously felt unable to express. I thought I'd accepted myself as queer and trans years ago, but I've still had work to do and this has been real cathartic for me
gabriel's journey mirrors a lot of what I myself have gone through, particularly with regards to having been raised catholic with a lot of shame and fear and guilt. I've realized that I've still been carrying a lot of baggage and shame around my queerness/transness in particular. I'm going through an awakening of my own here, in a sense
anyway, I'm so thankful for having experienced this game so far, and I look forward to where it goes next! in any case, it has changed me as a person for the better and for that I am immeasurably grateful to everyone who had a role in working on it

i have two separate tag things i've been meaning to do so i'm going to put them in the same post. two for the price of one!
under a readmore because it's a bit long:
from @batboymilo (thank you milo!)
last song: there's a whole list below, but i read an article about connie converse the other day and have been listening to her music since. i like it, very bittersweet to me.
currently reading: i admittedly haven't been reading much outside of scattered articles here and there! i've wanted to get back into the habit of reading for years now, but my preferred method of reading (sitting down for three-eight hours in a fugue state) doesn't mesh well with, you know, being an adult and having responsibilities. i want to pick up neuromancer again, got about a third of the way through it last year and was enjoying it.
currently watching: been leaving playthroughs of ffxvi on in the background while i work. i'm not very far in but good god my boy clive is going through it
current obsession: been thinking about embroidery lately! i've tried picking it up a million times over the years but it never fully clicked- i think it's starting to now, though? i find that now that i'm older and starting to shed some of my perfectionist tendencies that it's a lot easier to pick up things and have them actually stick. also there are so few art supplies that are inexpensive so being able to pick up a new color of floss for 69 cents rules ass.
from @sldghmmr (thank you slej!)
(shuffle your spotify on repeat playlist and list the first ten songs)
the fire is gone (for piano, saxophone, and trumpet)
the fire is gone (for music box)
harmony
i should probably play ultrakill one of these days, huh
sedona
dissonance
i hadn't listened to ajj in years until i saw they had a new album out recently. it's alright! not super into them atm but people who can eat people are the luckiest people in the world was probably one of my most listened-to albums in high school. grim sentence.
ready to die
sometimes you're reminded a song exists, listen to it thirty times in a night, and then forget it exists
find the flame
vest & boxers
a syb recommendation!
you're the one i love
little lies

To exist without Madeline... it's refreshing, to say the least, to have her own body. The last time this happened she was at that mountain. Celeste, right?
Tumblr media
Her smile fades as she realizes she's alone. The ghost has spent her whole life in Madeline's mind; even on the mountain she always knew where her pair was. Red eyes glance over the pamphlet as anxiety starts to set in. What's that trick Madeline has? Imagine a feather, and breathe?
She breathes.

badeline from celeste!! i love her so much-- celeste was the first game i bought and played in earnest and speedran, which in some ways is a direct pipeline to me playing ultrakill and writing gabriel here, lol.
honestly the number one reason i haven't apped her is that badeline's a terrible name for a character/a joke community name, and i'd have to come up with something else. "ghost" is her name in the in-game files, so it's probably what i'd settle on, but no one calls her that...!

ok so games i've played and enjoyed this year summerised! will literally be some short thoughts I'll really try to keep it brief since there is a lot lol (it's not going to be refined)
13 sentinels: dang i still need to finish this one - anyway if you played vanillaware before you'll probably know general things to expect. The story structure tbh reminds a lot of odin sphere but a hell of a lot more fluid within itself and your mileage may vary depending on how you like your sci fi stories (i really enjoy the unfloding of the mystery). Crazy good narrative design considering the 13 protags but pretty ok tactics combat. Hidden gem if anything
elden ring: Do i really need to talk about this one? It's great. Does some good stuff with the open world i enjoy (i usually do not click with open world well) was very fun to play a fromsoft game at launch completely blind if anything. Will never finish it as per usual with these types of games lol. Certainly not for everyone
ffxiv: have you heard of the critically acclaimed mmorpg- yeah anyway i really am not going go on anymore about this one since i liveblogged a lot of it but i've roped 3 other people into playing it over the last year so. I have no clue how it compaires to other mmos of its ilk.
signalis: AWOOOOOOOOOOGA. Seriously worth playing, especially if you want to try getting into surivival horror games or want to give them a go - feels old school but refined. Limitations work to it's advantage and it never feels reductive or derivative of its inspirations. The whole combine into something so unique and lasting.
Lunacid:Currently in early access - I tend to play this in short chunks wth large spanses of breaks inbetween - really fun to return to. Inspired by king's field and shadow tower but enough of it's own thing to feel great to play without prior knowledge of those two. Great atomsphere and i cannot understate how much i adore it.
unsighted: apparently i started playing this earlier last year but had a lot of on i forgot (and haven't finished it yet but want to) - don't let that sound like i didn't enjoy it though. The limited time mechanic is fantastic and well worth keeping on (i wouldn't call it punishing or anything of the sort, it feels more like it creates a soft goal-point for the player). Fantastic locomotive feel and combat is suuuuuuuper satisfying.
xanadu next: very old kinda clunky dungeon crawler (in terms of combat, less so in exploration). Oddly a cozy game for me. Really enjoy that loot is controlled by the order you kill enemies in a room in + keys can be carved from monster bones which is pretty cool (instead of buying them from the store, in which they go up in price per purchase).
halo 1: pretty good! i can understand it's influence but everytime i play it i think of all the boys in high school that talked about it lmaooo (last couple of levels feel pretty crunched so come across as weirdly hard)
Dmc trilogy: pretty good! despite my struggles with it, i still think the 1st one is my favourite to play. Really satisfying combat when it clicks on how to combat an enemy and very effortless at making you feel stylish while doing so
legend of heroes: trails in the sky: i need to return to this one - maybe fell off it because there was some casual, period typical (of the time of release) biphobia going on with some characters that made me feel very :/ but overall experience has been really great otherwise. Also kinda got cozy vibes depsite that
ultrakill: it hurt my hands real good (not a fun time in that regards)
in the drink: short fantastic underwater controls, super straightforward and very charming

This is the funniest possible mix I could've gotten for you asdfkhjuasdjhkas
It's Pizza Time - Mr. Sauceman
This is life's way of saying that if you haven't played Pizza Tower, you're now legally obligated to.
Heaven Pierce Her - Order
Take some Ultrakill too, I guess. Actually my favorite boss theme from this game. I remember spending 2 real life hours getting JUDGEMENT-ed on while this song played. Love it.
Choke (Acoustic) - I DONT KNOW HOW BUT THEY FOUND ME
It had to be the acoustic version in particular, didn't it? Anyways - idkhow is incredible, go listen to them, also legally obligated to (definitely not for everyone but. They bop)
The World Looks Red - Heaven Pierce Her
I swear to god, I'm just hitting shuffle on my liked songs on spotify. Anyways. Incredible combat theme. Set the entire tone for layer 7 and I loved it.
Madeline - Good Kid
Okay, finally, something different. An acoustic song about long distance relationships among other things. Can be interpreted a lot of ways with its lyrics, and it's such a beautiful song.
