when you start reading (listening to audiobooks) classic books for fun without the shadow of high school and the pressure to bullshit an essay and you are free to ponder the themes and narratives and language of those books at your own pace and can finally understand that goddamn that was a pretty good book and life is good actually

10 Comfort Movies + Wild Card
I got tagged by @ksfd89 and @jessmcriano for my top 10 comfort movies (plus one more) and this was really hard because I’m so much more a tv and anime person than a movie person nowadays, but here we go. Ranked by favorites.
1. BBC North and South
Tumblr media
I’m starting off the list with a 4 part miniseries and I don’t care. Just think of it as a four hour long movie lol. And this one has everything you need. Misunderstandings. Pining. Rejected proposals. Hands. All the hands. Unrequited requited love. It’s the grittier sister to Pride and Prejudice with more focus on class warfare and I absolutely love it. You can watch it on Netflix, but if you can find it elsewhere, (legally preferably) please do. Netflix cut some footage that it didn’t deem necessary, and it was a mistake.
2. BBC Pride and Prejudice (1995)
Tumblr media
And another miniseries... *cough cough* I mean six hour long movie. If you guys haven’t watched it by now and you’ve heard of it, then quite frankly, it’s probably too good for you. jkjkjkjkjk. Colin Firth soaking wet. That’s all you need. You know about Emma 2020 with Knightley taking off his clothes in lovesick frustration? Well, Colin’s Darcy did it first. Find it on Amazon Prime (or BBC/BBC One I think?)
3. Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Tumblr media
Didn’t I just put P&P on the list? Yes I did. Do I care? No. Cause Pride and Prejudice is so good you need two adaptations on the list. This one is amazing in its own right because of the costume designs and the music and the softness of light, and the acting, and the hand flex, (did I mention the hand flex?), and the... you get my drift. Again, if you haven’t seen it, what have you been doing with your life? Sadly, I don’t think it’s available to stream legally for free. I think you have to rent or buy it, but it’s totally worth it.
4. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society
Tumblr media
Um... Can you guys see the theme I’m working with here? Bwahahaha. Yes, I love my period dramas. This one is no exception. Lily James gets engaged and leaves her new fiancé behind in New York to go after a story in another country (after WW2) and ends up meeting her soulmate (who wrote to her about a book -- anyone else getting Lit vibes or just me?) Also Matthew Goode is her best friend. Enough said. You can find it on Netflix.
5. The Notebook
Tumblr media
Again with the Lit vibes. I’ve really got a type you guys. If it has books, banter, sexual chemistry, pining, and angst, sign me up. I’m your girl. I mean, just look at them. Um, excuse me? I’d like that for myself thanks. Not available to stream at the moment (seriously what is wrong with people?), but you can rent or buy it.
6. Anne of Green Gables + The Sequel (1985 and 1987 Kevin Sullivan films)
Tumblr media
You want a pretty faithful adaptation of the original Anne of Green Gables? Look no further than this film. It’s honestly the best adaptation I’ve ever seen. Megan Follows is the only Anne for me. The Sequel takes some liberties with the subsequent novels (Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars), but all the important parts are there, plus Johnathan Crombie’s Gilbert Blythe is amazing (RIP). Also Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla is A++. If you’ve seen Anne With an E and are devastated by the cancellation, watch this. It’s the superior adaptation anyways. It’s a travesty this is not on streaming (they’ve even taken the movie in parts off youtube). However, you can buy it on dvd from Amazon, Sullivan Entertainment, etc...
7. Iron Man
Tumblr media
And now we take a break from your scheduled period dramas. Take me back to the beginning. That’s right. This is where the MCU started it all, and honestly, a lot of the films in the MCU after can’t beat it. It’s the perfect origin story in which we watch billionaire playboy philanthropist Tony Stark actually grow a heart and care about something other than sex and money. There’s classic rock. Gwyneth as Pepper Potts. Jeff Bridges is an amazing villian. Just forget that Terrence Howard plays Rhodey in this one. We all do. Also, Iron Man is just so fucking cool. Find it on Hulu and Disney+.
8) The Cutting Edge
Tumblr media
Not exactly a period drama, but trade in books for ice skating and long corset dresses for sparkly skirts and tights, and it’s pretty much more of the same thing. Rough hockey boy meet ice princess for a chance to win gold at the Olympics. Banter, sexual chemistry, pining, and angst. Watch it on Hulu and Amazon Prime.
9. Tangled
Tumblr media
A Disney film? Yes I know. But technically, it’s still a period drama! Well, musical really, but still! A pure and innocent film about going after your dream with a thief who turns out to be your soul mate. Your mom you’ve lived with all your life and keeps you locked away in a tower? Yeah, she’s actually an evil witch who kidnapped you to stay young. Those lanterns you’ve been dreaming of all your life? They’re actually a sign from your real family -- the king and queen -- to come home. I mean, who wouldn’t want to find out that secretly you’re a lost princess? Also, Mandy Moore’s voice. Find it on Disney+.
10. The Lady Vanishes
Tumblr media
Probably my favorite Hitchcock film of all time. Remember my type? Well, this one has a traveling music historian pair up with a newly engaged stuffy rich girl to solve the mystery of the missing lady on a train. Is there banter? Absolutely. Is there sexual chemistry? Absolutely. Pining and angst? You got it. No books, but the suspense more than makes up for it. And surprisingly, you can find it on Tubi for free! I’m so shocked.
Wild Card. Haikyuu!!
Tumblr media
Now, you’re probably thinking to yourself that Iron Man should be in this spot, and really, out of all the movies, you’d probably be right. However, Iron Man is still technically a movie, and as I’ve stated before, I really watch tv and a lot of anime, so the wild card goes to an anime tv show. I had to throw one in there, and this is my absolute all time favorite anime. If you’re ever wanting to dip your toes into the anime scene and want to watch something that’s light-hearted and pure, this is for you. Yes, it’s technically a sports anime about volleyball, but really it’s about friendship, hard work, and giving 110% to be the best person/player you can be, and honestly, I think all of us can use that kind of inspiration right now. You can find the first two seasons on Netflix and Hulu. The entire series you can find on Crunchyroll (VRV has up to Season 3).
All right. I’m tagging @austennerdita2533, @pizzabookbuying, @lej418, and anyone else who wants to do this :) (tag me if you do so I can read your responses. I’d love to get to know you better <3)
