Lolita is a 1955 novel written by Russian-American novelist Vladimir Nabokov, notable for its controversial subject: the protagonist and unreliable narrator, a middle-aged literature professor under the pseudonym Humbert Humbert, is obsessed with a 12-year-old girl, Dolores Haze, with whom he becomes sexually involved after he becomes her stepfather. "Lolita" is his private nickname for Dolores. Lolita quickly attained a classic status, adapted into a film by Stanley Kubrick in 1962, and another film by Adrian Lyne in 1997, is one of the greatest work of the 20th century, and it has been included in several lists of best books. "Let all of life be an unfettered howl. Like the crowd greeting the gladiator. Don't stop to think, don't interrupt the scream, exhale, release life's rapture." LOLITA BY VLADIMIR NABOKOV
Due to Lolita’s critical acclaim, I really believed that I would have liked it definitively. However, I came out of it with a sour taste in my mouth, wondering whether or not I was viewing the novel differently from the rest of the world. It soon dawned on me that maybe the whole rage about Lolita was not in spite of the uncomfortable nature of it, but because of this.
To me, the storyline and characters unsettled me and this clouded my view of the novel’s stylistic treasures.
I hate Humbert Humbert. In 1951, Nabokov wrote to his editor at the Viking Press, “I am engaged in the composition of a novel, which deals with the problems of a very moral middle-aged gentleman who falls very immorally in love with his step-daughter, a girl of thirteen.” I don’t believe at all that Humbert is a “very moral” man, his infatuation with Lolita displays this clearly, as does the murder he commits because of this infatuation. I never felt sympathetic towards Humbert because he never seemed as though he deserved it, when he first fell in love with Lolita there was very little inner conflict which, if he was a moral man as said, he would’ve experienced. I understand that his deep-rooted issues dating back to that night on the beach are the real reason why he has this obsession for young girls but my problem is that he never presents this interest with any self-disgust, because he doesn’t inherently believe his fantasies are wrong. He brands these little girls as “nymphets” in order to dehumanise them and give an explanation as to why he, a middle-aged man, is allowed to look at little girls in this light. Furthermore, his treatment of Lolita was indicative of a controlling abuser, not of a lover. I understand that he (disgustingly) played the part of a guardian and a lover to Lolita but he showed clear signs of his obsessiveness and tyrannical nature.
Alternatively, I liked Dolores Haze/Lolita very little too. I understand that whatever she became towards the end of the novel as she spent more and more time under Humbert’s thumb was directly linked to this perverse relationship, but I just felt there was something inherently dislikable about her. Perhaps it was her willingness to go along with Humbert’s fantasy, although she was very young and impressionable. More likely is that I just couldn’t stand her icy nature. She was frequently changing her mood on a whim and having a spiteful nature to her. I know that this was her acting out over her situation and I appreciate this but this combination between two unlikable characters created a hostile environment to read about.
The large portion of the novel that revolved around the Humbert-Lolita road trip was almost painful. I hated them as people, I hated their relationship even more, and I felt as though I too had been kidnapped and taken against my will on this deranged journey to nowhere.
Towards the end, when Humbert spiralled mentally and Lolita was able to become Dolores again and find a normal life made me feel that everything was right finally. I know that Dolores’ childhood would be forever destroyed by Humbert Humbert but I at least felt as though she had removed that old life from her nature like shedding skin and she was now a new person.
So, because of the intense distastefulness of the premise and characters, I found it hard to understand why this novel was so critically acclaimed. Then I realised that it was in despite of these traits, and due to Lolita’s incredible narrative style, that Lolita gets such high, and deserved, praise.
