I keep thinking about that humansofny post from awhile back where the guy said he used to feel bad about himself and waste time playing video games, that he didn't have his life together so he joined the army and made something of himself.
This is where we are in cultural values and shame, morality, having a conscience, being a good person - playing video games makes you bad so redeem yourself by killing people for the government.
It just really depresses me.

Tanqueray Book Review
Tumblr media
“ In 2019, Humans of New York featured a photo of a woman in an outrageous fur coat and hat she made herself. She instantly captured the attention of millions. Her name is Stephanie Johnson, but she’s better known to HONY followers as “Tanqueray,” a born performer who was once one of the best-known burlesque dancers in New York City. Reeling from a brutal childhood, immersed in a world of go-go dancers and hustlers, dirty cops and gangsters, Stephanie was determined to become the fiercest thing the city had ever seen. And she succeeded.” - synopsis of “Tanqueray” from cover
I loved this memoir. It's beautiful simplicity tells the complex life story of Stephanie Johnson, who spent many years as a dancer in New York City clubs using the name Tanqueray. Stephanie's story is an absolutely wild ride, filled with celebrity appearances, romance, heartbreak, and everything in between. Brandon and Stephanie work wonderfully together, and you can tell the two formed a unique bond while working on both this book and the stories that they featured in "Humans of New York." The book high lights the strength and determination Stephanie displayed as a young Black woman making her mark on New York City when clubs weren't yet allowing Black dancers through their doors, let alone making them headliners. I will definitely be adding this book to my shelf. 5/5 Stars
CW: Racism, drug abuse, sexism, child neglect, sexual content, sexual assault, death, imprisonment

“Instead of saying: ‘Nobody likes me,’ I flipped it around. I said: ‘There’s got to be a reason I haven’t met someone, and I’m going to figure it out.’”

SO RELATABLE & TRUE 🔁 • @humansofny “I’m aware of it all day, every day. We’re triggered all the time, even the best of us. On the plane ride here. I’m sitting next to a casting director from Broadway, and I asked him what he thought about a particular show. He took a long pause. So I say: ‘I guess you didn’t like it.’ And he tells me: ‘The entertainment industry is forced to put on stories from marginalized communities, even if they’re not good.’ He said that to me. As a Black person. It’s like, dude. I’m just trying to make conversation. And there it is. Suddenly I’m back in my blackness. What am I supposed to do? Do I engage? Do I turn this into a learning moment? Or do I l just let him off the hook? It’s work. That’s what it is. It’s work. That’s my challenge. To walk into a room, and not have to work mentally. To be aware of my blackness; to not forget it. But to also be present. And focused. And productive. Right now I’m at a climate change conference, and I’m one of the only Black people in the room. I’ve had decades of practice, but it still takes me five minutes. To transition. To stop worrying if people believe that I belong here. To stop feeling like a unicorn. It’s five minutes of work that nobody else in the room has to do. It’s a choice to be aware of your whiteness. It’s not a choice to be aware of your blackness. It’s the difference between going to a new upscale restaurant, and going home to Mom’s table. At Mom’s table there’s nothing to figure out. You don’t have to think about what to order. Or what you’re wearing. Or what you’re going to say. You’re at ease. That’s why people go home: so they can feel at ease.” https://www.instagram.com/p/Ci5CyYuIhesgKGgtTUuPcmlddZxorjebL-CP7s0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

July reading round up. I didn't read nearly as many as in June but I read longer books this go round. The Light Years by Elizabeth Jane Howard ( this was a selection from last Summer for @duchessofcornwallsreadingroom that I started abd put down. I picked it up again and devoured it) Summer at Tiffany by Majorie Hart, a charming delightful book about Ms Hart's Summer as an employee at Tiffany ( she was one of the very first female employees allowed to work on the showroom floor EVER) The Cats of Copenhagen by James Joyce, this is a storybook based on letters Joyce sent to his grandson illustrated by Casey Sorrow. Summer by Edith Wharton, you can never read too much Wharton! Summer by Ali Smith ( a theme in July), the final installment of Ms Smith's Seasons quartet. Every book is a gem. Tanqueray by Stephanie Johnson and Brandon Stanton creator of @humansofny just follow Mr. Stanton's social media and be reaffirmed of the fact that there is innate goodness in the world. Read Tanquery and discover how we're surrounded by human beings who've lived extraordinary lives that never required a hashtag The Story of Ferdinand by Munro Leaf illustrated by Robert Lawson just felt the need to read this classic The Monster at the End of This Book I will never be too old for @sesamestreet NEVER Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, the first selection for this season's Reading Room. It's one of my favorite and it's because of Mr. Darcy that no man will measure up * sigh* Secrets of a Devon Wood: My Nature Journal by Jo Brown a gift from Kid B. SHELTER IN PLACE . This is Angel. I think you'll all agree with me that it's more than an appropriate name for her. It wasn't until I got her photo onto a laptop that I saw the "be nice" written behind her, and if that isn't divine intervention I don't know what is. . This is a continuation of "Shelter in Place" which aims to raise awareness about the paradox that Covid has put the homeless community in. While most of us were sheltering in place and fighting over toilet roll, some of us had nowhere to shelter. Covid not only contributed (and still is) massively to the number of people who were made homeless, but also rendered municipal shelters unsafe for those who needed them, even more so because the homeless community has a disproportionate number of people who suffer from severe health issues. . I spent 2 weeks speaking to and photographing a number of people living on the streets of NYC, and now I'm going to share them and their stories with you. Many of these people told me they were choosing to live on the streets since they felt safer, but now that winter is here, that is no longer an option. The homeless community greatly needs our help. I've donated to @nyhomeless (link also in bio), the nation's oldest advocacy and direct service organisation for the homeless community, and I'm asking that if you have anything to spare to also consider donating to this incredible team - their task is colossal, but with every dollar and every bit of increased awareness, we can make it a little easier. . Thank you for reading this. I'll be introducing you to more of the people I met and spoke to over the next few days. There is so much more I could say and want to say about this but in the interest of social media brevity I've kept it as short as possible! Stay safe, and stay healthy and please feel free to share ✨ . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . #covid_19 #homeless #homelessnessawareness #covid #nyc #ny #portrait #portraitphotography #endpoverty #bnwphotography #blackandwhite #blackandwhitephotography #photojournalism #endhomelessness #streetphotography #canon #humansofny #spicollective #photooftheday #urbanphotography (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJ_rlpeHjp0/?igshid=qq6q23wgpd80
