Two friends Hong Kong, october 2019 — The demonstrations deeply divided Hong Kong’s families, with some of older generations (not all) not understanding their children's struggles: in terms of identity (the younger ones feel honkongers, the older ones who are often first or second generation Chinese immigrants feel Chinese) and in terms of values, in terms of what they consider essential to life. The older ones being more materialistic, needing only a good place to live, a job and food and seeing demonstrations as something destroying this. The younger ones, feels like only free life worth living. Many demonstrators were simply thrown out of their homes. In a society where the administration does not ensure any redistribution of income, family ties are essential, and the banishment of one of his children, sometimes very young, is always a tragedy. Homes have been opened, collections of all kinds are being launched, doctors are being mobilized to ensure that young people are cared for outside the medical institution, where the files are forwarded to the police. These demonstrations have disrupted the lives of many of those taking part, families have been torn apart, but an entire generation has united deeply, forging networks of solidarity, being as one. Beyond their five demands, which have been on the rise for more than 6 months, one of the greatest concerns of the demonstrators is to take care of each other and to remain in solidarity at all costs. — From “Frontliners” photo series. Hong Kong, Admiralty, September 29th. © 2019 Rémy Soubanère — This photo is taken is taken on sunday september 29th, near government offices where protesters were throwing bricks. Raptors came from a small doors and began smashing and beating everybody who were on their reach, basically those who run slower or those who didn’t look back. This protester was hit in the head, left handcuffed with no medical assistance. The photo shows him eyes open, then they closed. He seemed unconscious for the ten minutes I spent there before police kicked me off the road. — Since 12 June, the police's use of force was frequently criticized. Amnesty International published a report on 21 June, which concluded that the police's use of force violated "international human rights laws and standards". The police was also criticized for using pepper spray on a person who posed no obvious threat, and the use of force on peaceful or retreating protesters was condemned. The police's use of force was also accused of disregarding the safety of the members of the public.When the STS squad stormed the Prince Edward station and assaulted the passengers and protesters inside with police baton and pepper spray on 31 August, it was once again accused of using excessive force. On 1 October 2019, a police officer shot a young man wiea point blank range with a revolver. On 14 October 2019, Hong Kong police shot a 14-year old child in the leg with a live round.
