AK and the desire to prove oneself
In “Love Me Love Me” (performed at Rap for Youth), AK tells us his relationship with praise.
Here he raps that “Some people asked me why I work so hard/I usually respond honestly/I want to prove I’m outstanding (優秀) for the world to hear/So people open their eyes wide and focus on me.”
In this scene, the trainees are recreating the theme song and sharing what sentiment/wish each of them want to shout at the end of the song. AK shares that he wants to prove to the world he’s good (aka “優秀” though “outstanding” is a better translation here than “good”).

AK’s experiences with bullying (part 2)
AK: I wasn’t so lonely anymore. So I worked very very hard to improve even more so that even more people can notice me. There was an exam called the SAT. I got 1510 and felt I did well so I showed other people.
AK: Suddenly there were people from my middle school in the place I didn’t like (note: probably where he was bullied) who wanted to talk to me.
AK: And then I felt a bit afraid because I thought if I did not continue to excel, then they’d all leave me. I was very afraid of that, so I became more and more careful in what I did and what I said.
AK: To be honest, these are things that I continuously refused to face. Now I will talk about it and share my story with everyone. Maybe it will inspire people who has had similar experiences as me.

AK’s experiences with bullying (part 1)
AK: This is a song about myself. I really hope to have love, and by love I mean friendship, friend love. This is something I haven’t experienced much of, and I really hope others love me.
AK: But I was very intensely bullied during middle school, and this had a very big impact on my life since then.
AK: It gave me low self-esteem, and made me want everyone to like me. This is the major effect of being bullied in school.
AK: At that time (note: now referring to high school), I was bored so I worked hard in school, got better grades, and even got elected to an important seat in student council. After that, I felt seen, felt that a lot of people knew me. This felt a bit better--I was no longer so lonely.

Translation: As a rapper, you should never be afraid. If you are afraid in the face of a strong opponent, then you are not qualified to be a rapper, I think. I did not “lose ugly” (this means even though he lost he still went out on a high note).

AK on Love Me Love Me
AK: I hope that everyone who’s been bullied can break free from low self-esteem, and that everyone who’s felt lonely can find friendship. I’ve broken free from low self-esteem and also found my friends.
AK: Of course, when I mentioned my friends, Sundae gege (older brother) must be included in that group.

Closer look at Love Me Love Me (part 2)
Later, an older brother (meaning older friend) said people mainly look at another’s heart when making friends. It doesn’t matter if you’re outstanding, you don’t need to make that clear/Being outstanding is like a torch, attracting Fakers who yearn for the light/They’re like moths who leave when the fire is out or when the sun rises.
Later I went to a place (NYU) where I wasn’t considered outstanding/I was afraid to start conversations because they might say no/Became unconfident and anxious but that quickly subsided. They (friends) pushed me forwards and sometimes acted like idiots/My friends didn’t seem to care about my skills and potential.
Love me love me please all my friends/Right now I only need you. I’m willing to use all my sincerity in exchange for your love/Good thing sincerity can be exchanged for sincerity.

Closer look at Love Me Love Me (part 1)
In Rap for Youth, the prompt for this performance was “What if you only had three more days to live” and contestants only had a few hours to complete it.
I’ve been afraid of the dark, of loneliness, of being alone since I was young/In middle school, I hid, scared of tall classmates kicking open the door (implies bullying)/In high school I happened to realize I had some merits/Started to be seen and surrounded by a group of people.
Love me love me please. I’ve gotten a lot of praise but it’s not enough for me/I’m willing to spend all of my fortune in exchange for more people’s love/Too bad love is the kind of stuff that’s not on sale.
Then I’ll use my hard work in exchange for praise, no matter if your compliments are sincere or not/Maybe praise can’t compare with love, but I hate being alone.

AK and Sundae
Sundae: AK is someone who feels the need to prove himself. His opponent is always himself. I think AK is prevailing over himself and becoming stronger step by step. I am proud of him for this.
AK: From yesterday’s performance, don’t cut any of Sundae’s stage. I think that song of his deserves a good stage. And he is my good brother, good older brother. I don’t want him to have any regrets about such a great song.
