Deep Like a Coastal Shelf by @Lilla_Torg [aight so this is an author with the very distinguished storytelling pattern, that i can not help but appreciate, their world-building and characterization is usually top notch, and this particular babie is not an exception: porsche and chay were brought up by someone from the syndicate that targets organized crime, and now that people, who used to call themselves their parents, are gone, Porsche is left with the ominous List, and a black leather vigilante suit, to keep their legacy alive. korn and gun are dead, Main and Minor fams are combined, tankhun has taken over as the Leader. kinn handles their overseas ops. amazing quality of storytelling, as always. DNI if you can’t handle pairings other than kp, as this is a multi-pairing piece, as it is customary for this author. but again, the story is so good, i didn’t even skip kimchay/vegaspete bits, which is a feat on it’s own. max kudosssssss]

the house don’t fall (when the bones are good) by @bytheriveriwept [i often say that i luved some works, but there are works i luved, and then there are works i LUVVEEEEEEDDDDDDDD with my whole-ass heart, this bit of genius masterpiece is the case of the latter. kp are special agents, colleagues, parts of the same organization, cohesive unit, and all that. only until porsche decides to take on risqué assignment, and go undercover. will they still be them, when he is back....? what can i say, this was sooooooooo up my alley in so many ways, i don’t even wanna say no more, if you haven’t read this.... what the hell is you even doing]

the less i know the better by @mslunita [yummmmm, delicious morsel of tinder hookup-turned-softness, i really enjoyed this one: kp initially meet on the apps, and yet, being themselves, immediately turn this motha all soppy and lovey-dovey, - extremely canon-complaint, if you ask me. exactly the kinda content i am here for🙏 super-well done]

Love and the Art of War by @fortunehasgivenup [oooooowwwwww yassss, this is sooooo far up my alley it ain’t even funny. first of all, this author is everything, man, love all their fics, must reads, all of them. this specific babie is sooooo precious though: set in some nebulous middle ages, it’s a war camp setting, kinn has been away from home for months, and upon returning from some battle or other, gets an unexpected visitor waiting for him inside his tent. ngl, i would have read 200k of this, but author gave me 4, and i lapped them up like a man starved. perfection, truly. not to mention the use of “anakinn” in any context just does it for me🤷‍♀️]

i truuuuuly cannot understand where they are going with vegaspete?? like i know they’re waiting to set it up later (but why wait THIS long?? especially since vegaspete could really be driving the whole evil!vegas thing) but i dont understand why they’re not even setting it up yet. like sure we’ve barely seen them interact, but i feel like even in the times that we DO, the writers/directors make no effort to make it seem like there is a deeper story to tell here. if i didn’t know vegaspete were a thing in the novel, and that the show has explicitly marketed them as a relationship that will be explored, i feel like i wouldn’t think there was anything going on between them at all?? like every interaction they’ve had has just felt like them interacting as just the sum of the parts, pete as a bodyguard, and vegas as kinn’s cousin. this could also be because the writers are pushing vegas’ obsession with porsche rn (and maybe that’s what drives him to pete in the first place idk i literally know nothing about them from the novel) but i feel like the writers could be planting seeds and leaving breadcrumbs to set up the inevitable story between them, but we’re just not seeing any of that at all :/ (this could also me being greedy and impatient because i just want them to have more screentime lol)

Alright, I have to admit that I'm still a bit worried about this whole thing gbrudgdyd but for different reasons. VegasPete is a MESS in the novel (I haven't read it but I know the authors couldn't even handle KinnPorsche as well as the show's doing so far, so...), and I'm very curious to see what they changed to make it work.

But will they make it work? 🥲

I don't think they're taking too long to establish their storyline, but it all depends on how they're gonna handle it in the next episodes, so in hindsight I could change my mind. This is a very very slow burn, and for a reason: Vegas is not only an important character for his own storyline, but also for Kinn and Porsche's. He's the involuntary catalyst for their relationship: he makes Kinn jealous, he forces him to confront his paranoia, and then forces Porsche to do the same. How could he do all of this if he was busy falling for someone else?

Also his obsession with Porsche tells us a lot about him as well. I don't think he really likes him. There's probably attraction involved, because of course there is 💀 but I think it's less about Vegas and Porsche and more about Vegas and Kinn. It's all a game, a power play that Vegas keeps losing over and over again. Vegas wants what Kinn has, and so he tried to get Porsche to himself, but what will he do now that his chances of succeeding are ruined? He's gonna snap.

So this opens the road to VegasPete nation 😎 and exacerbates the conflict between the two sides of the family, which I guess will drive the second half of the story? I have no idea 💀

So to me the set-up seems good enough so far, meaning that everything can still work if they make good use of their time in the second half, which I hope will be the case gfunrifbeye

They established pretty well that there's some kind of tension between Pete and Vegas: their scenes clearly hint at a future development of their relationship because they would be useless otherwise. They don't add much to the story.

What they do, is letting us see Pete's reactions whenever Vegas is around. He's obviously on edge, he tries to make himself look as innocuous as he can, becoming all dumb smiles and even dumber excuses. But then we saw how he acted when Vegas started torturing that man 👀 so what's Pete hiding? Was he wary in that scene, was he interested? What goes on in his head?

Vegas is not really interested in Pete at the moment. Even in the novel, from what I've read around Tumblr, he only starts being interested after the kidnapping. He has no reason to before. It's what he sees in Pete once he gets his hands on him that gets to him and makes him grow attracted and then attached to him, I think.

So what I'm trying to say is that there's no VegasPete until THERE IS. Their story starts and grows in a very specific setting and situation.

So yeah, I think we have yet to see their storyline start because up until now they had to dedicate most of their time to other stuff, and they couldn't jump straight into the kidnapping. But once that happens we're in for a wild ride.

God, I hope they know what they're doing 🙏🏻

Okay so I know how all of us traumatised Not Me fans are scared about VegasPete being another GramBlack, but honestly guys the unhinged feelings I have for VegasPete is also giving me a LOT of ToddBlack nostalgia.

The excitement, the fear, the feral yearning, the unhinged potential to be SO crazy ahshdjfjfj you all remember ep11 of Not Me and how the ToddBlack ship/nation rose (some were on board since ep1, others like me caught sus vibes in ep5)? And the absolute drama that escalated and how there were still sceptics and then ep13 dropped on our heads and ToddBlack was basically solidified with Gun and Sing ONLY having 2 scenes together as Black and Todd (and others where Todd looked at the sleeping beauty that was Black in a coma) and yet the ship rose and what was I trying to say?

Ah yes VegasPete.. so yes I'm really really getting the same sort of excitement and ahahdjdkffhdjd I just hope it pays off and we get amazing scenes between the two please please gay drama gods!

I’m sure someone must have talked about this somewhere before, but every now and then I have a new revelation about VP and I’m just, like, how did I not see this before?

In Ep 11, when Pete tells Vegas he’s not eating, and Vegas asks him if he thinks he can choose, and Pete’s response is “I’m not choosing, I’m just not eating” ...

Despite all the food = relationship/connection/nurture metaphors salted through their entire storyline, It just hit me that this conversation is a metaphor for what Pete has been doing EMOTIONALLY all this time. Even back with the main family. Possibly for his entire life, the whole time that - he’ll admit in Ep 13 - he’s been feeling empty and useless.

He’s not choosing. He’s just not feeling.

Until he grabs Vegas’s face with both hands the way he grabs that bowl of noodles with both hands. Until he lays back and offers himself up during sex like he slurps down those noodles while making ecstatic little noises. Until he’s reminding himself of Vegas’s touch while weeping into his fucking dinner.

Vegas is the one who makes him feel something. Vegas is the one who feeds him, on 376 different levels. And Vegas can’t force that. He can’t force Pete to feel something any more than he can beat him into eating. It’s only after Vegas reaches back across the chasm to meet Pete’s offered hand (because Vegas is starving emotionally, too) - the way he proves the noodles aren’t poisoned by taking the bowl back from Pete and eating out of it - that Pete’s willing to eat.

I’m just going to be sitting here with my head in my hands for a few minutes. Don’t mind me.

Vegas and Pete in Ep 14 go from Pete kneeling over Vegas with a gun in his hand and Vegas's blood all over him as Vegas asks Pete to be the one to kill him to Pete kneeling over Vegas (with a gun in his hand?) and Vegas's blood all over him as Pete wails in despair over Vegas dying under him.

I am not ever getting over this show.

(And then there's the hospital scene, but that's post-credits and therefore somewhere outside the actual bounds of the show.)

So, listen. We talk about Vegas giving Pete what he needs when he lets Pete beat the shit out of him in the parking garage in Ep 14, but that’s never entirely worked for me, and I think I’ve finally started getting my hands around why.

You’re going to have a hard time convincing me Vegas is that altruistic at that point. That may be a little bit of what’s going on, but this is a guy who’s already made the ultimate sacrifice of letting Pete go - Vegas tells Pete he’s sorry behind Yok’s bar, but he never asks for Pete to come back to him, he doesn’t ask Pete to forgive him, he doesn’t ask for shit from Pete except (twice) to kill him (btw, how’s that feel on the other side, Pete?). I absolutely don’t want to downplay what Vegas does here, because it’s a lot. And in return, it’s not like Pete then walked away from the main family for Vegas. As far as Vegas knew, Pete was going to go right back to his pre-safehouse life with the main family and without Vegas, pack Vegas up into a little box somewhere and stuff it way way down in the back of his mind, and Vegas would be lucky if he saw Pete in the lineup of main bodyguards at a family function. Or, you know, more likely Vegas would be dead, and Pete would move on, as far as Vegas could tell. The next time Vegas sees Pete after the scene behind Yok’s bar, Pete is back at Kinn’s side. The first time Vegas sees Pete in the minor family’s assault on the main family compound, Pete is covering Kinn, until Kinn’s boyfriend shows up to take over that job. Pete has repeatedly shown Vegas that he’d rather be the main family’s loyal hound than return to Vegas again.

So, I submit that an awful lot of the beatdown in the parking garage is a kid who’s learned that even negative attention is attention (you think he doesn’t know what people say about him?) and who’s willing to let his crush beat the shit out of him because it’s 1) better than being ignored and 2) more proof that Pete feels something about him.

Y’ALL. LISTEN.

Pete hands Vegas that rope to bind him in Ep 12 and then offers up his wrists, but here’s the thing, GOD, the thing that is making me feral again, as I go back and re-watch the show: Pete is absolutely perfectly capable of getting out of that rope, no matter Vegas’s intentions. We see this in Ep TWO, when Pete’s right beside Porsche - so we don’t miss him, even before we (technically) know how important Pete is to the narrative - during the training exercise in which they’re supposed to get out of rope bonds (which look a shit-ton like the rope that Pete hands to Vegas later in the safehouse) while underwater in the pool at the main family compound. We hear an entire big lecture just before they’re all shoved into the deep end (lit. and fig.) about how “Just so you all know, if you are captured, taken hostage, you have less than three minutes to untie yourselves. Make the minutes count.” We see Pete prepping himself for maximum bodyguard performance during this little speech, rolling his neck and shoulders to make sure he’s ready. He’s the first one Chan pushes into the pool. Not only does he get out of those ropes almost immediately, even underwater - he’s one of, if not the first person out of his ropes and breaking the surface, as we also watch Porsche struggle at the bottom of the pool - but he manages to position himself to float up, near the water’s surface, as he works to free himself, so that he’s right there at the top of the water to break out, immediately up into the air, once he gets his bonds off. He not only can do this, he’s fucking good at it.

I went back to Ep 12 after that. Vegas initiates what ultimately becomes their sex scene at 27:30 by reaching out, grabbing the front plackets of the shirt Pete’s wearing, and pulling him closer. Three minutes later, at 30:30, Vegas initiates the final kiss of their sex scene, just before he pulls out and rolls off of Pete to lie beside him.

Those three minutes that we get counted, all right, and Pete did NOTHING to untie himself, to extricate himself from this situation he found himself in. This was a deliberate choice he made, not just at the beginning, when he handed Vegas that rope, but consistently, constantly, every single second when he chose to remain bound and to offer himself up for 1) whatever Vegas wanted to do and 2) the intimacy of that encounter. At no point was he able to fall back on, “well, I’ve made my decision and now I’ll have to live with it, what can I do?” Every. single. second. was freely given.

Y’all. I’m chewing glass again.

And then I compare that constant, consistent gift of his consent - in the bonds that he could escape at any time, with nothing but his clever fingers and his trained self-sufficiency - to the handcuff, which he needs a tool for - if not the key, something he can pick it with - and I want to cry again.

(And then I think about those goddam bolt cutters that Vegas left lying around, clearly within reach at every point in time post-pill, and I want to chew glass again. They’re such a beautiful disaster, and I love them so much.)

OK. OK OK OK.

So, yes, the importance of Vegas telling Pete during that final hospital scene that Pete isn’t his pet, he’s the most important person in Vegas’ life is obvious. But I’ve been talking to @lu-sn and @minorfamilysupremacy about some of this, and new implications and layers of that KEEP hitting me. Bear with me a minute, because I’m trying to organize my thoughts and get them down before they get away. Back here, I talked about how Vegas’s question of whether “someone else” can feed Pete isn’t theoretical, it’s really about Kinn. And then the statement in the hospital, this “you’re the most important person in my life” is, in some ways, ALSO about Kinn, and about the main family, and about Pete’s relationship to them vs. his relationship to Vegas, and about the choices Pete’s made to stay with, and then to leave, and then to stay with Vegas.

So, from the beginning, Vegas calls Pete a dog because he is a dog for the main family. That’s the level of respect and care he gets from them. He’s a working dog, so he’s kept in good shape, and he’s a loyal hound, the way dogs can be. Even as he resigns, he tells Korn that he’ll always love the main family and feel loyalty to them (and excavating how much truth is there, and how long it’ll last in the face of Korn’s inevitable machinations of Vegas is a whole other question ...). But he is unquestionably there for the service of family members, to be used as a tool however they want to use him. We see Pete serve with loyalty and equanimity and even some surface pleasure in some of his duties, but underneath it all, we finally learn - after Vegas cracks that tailored bodyguard armor open and pulls Pete apart just as surely as he pulled apart any of his torture victims, to look at his soft squishy insides, to look at his heart, to look at his soul, to see who Pete really is under the dog collar bodyguard suit and routine the main family keeps him in (kind of just a different level of the kennel bedroom Vegas keeps him in with a dog bowl to eat out of) - we learn that Pete gets no real satisfaction from any of this, that he lives his life feeling empty and useless. So empty and useless that once he has someone see him for who he really is and treat him like an actual person and then has that snatched back out of his grasp by Vegas’s trauma responses and abuse, he would rather die than continue to live that way with Vegas. He would rather kill himself than be Vegas’s dog. So what he does is knock Vegas flat and run right back to the main family to be their dog again.

Because it doesn’t hurt as much when they only treat you as a dog and a tool. When they don’t see you as an actual person, when they haven’t seen who you really are, haven’t treated you as a person and touched you with tenderness and reverence, and looked at you like you’re the entire world and fed you and fed you and fed you until you burst with it, for the first time in your life - and then put the dog collar right back on you. Being a dog for the main family is business as usual. Being a dog for Vegas, when Vegas knows the person underneath it and - Pete now thinks he wrongly presumed - cares about that person, is unendurable. It’s so much worse than being forgotten by Kinn.

I think hearing that Vegas DOES love him during the parking lot beatdown/confession scene is part of why Pete can set aside his issues with the label and role of “pet” when he eventually disavows the personal autonomy he fought Vegas so hard for, in favor of saving Vegas’s life in the poolside scene. Vegas actually does care for him in a way that the main family doesn’t, and he’s told Pete so. This is Pete’s “I love you” back to Vegas, although I’ve also talked about how I think the beatdown and the “I’m your pet” line mirror each other as self-effacing and dehumanizing expressions of love. Which then becomes part of exactly why “You’re not my pet, you’re the most important person in my life” becomes so. very. important: Because it lets us see that Vegas knows what he’s cost Pete.

Vegas is so smart. We see that again and again and again. We see it when the lightbulb goes on almost immediately when Pete tells him that the abuse Vegas endures isn’t even about him, it’s because Kun is a shitty father. We see it when he almost immediately operationalizes this knowledge and shows up the next time he’s been smacked around having already done some self-care by putting on his soft pajama pants and Pete’s metaphorical skin. (Listen, I’ve decided the navy T-shirt is actually the same T-shirt that Pete was wearing the first time he got caught sneaking around the minor family house, that it was the dark T-shirt Pete’s wearing under the orange jumpsuit the second time he got caught sneaking around the minor family house, and then given that it’s already been stripped off of him by the time Vegas shows up to see Pete tied to a pillar in Torture Dungeon Main, it’s lying around somewhere down there for Vegas to pick up like a serial killer trophy, and now he’s wearing it like a boyfriend shirt. You will not change my mind about this.)

ANYWAY. It took Pete having a complete nervous breakdown, a suicide attempt, knocking Vegas the fuck out, and running back to the main family, but Vegas finally also seems to understand what he’s done, what he’s cost Pete. He apologizes - repeatedly - and he literally puts his life in Pete’s hands, and then he leaves Pete in control of what happens from there, no matter how much it’s killing Vegas to do so. He actually prioritizes Pete’s feelings over his own, which is one reason I will go toe-to-toe with anyone who tries to tell me that Vegas isn’t actually the best character in the show, narratively speaking, with the best defined and most compelling growth arc. And so I have no problem believing that Vegas finally understands why it hurts Pete so much to be Vegas’s dog when he’s been able to endure it for the main family, but also that what Pete is getting from the main family isn’t enough anymore. Vegas knows what it costs Pete to take on that role again at poolside, just to keep Vegas from killing himself, and maybe Vegas even understands that Pete, himself, thinks he can endure it now that he has some assurance from Vegas that Vegas actually does love him. And what’s so so so important here is that Vegas doesn’t want that for Pete. He doesn’t want to treat Pete like the main family - “that filthy family” - does. He doesn’t want to treat Pete like Vegas, himself, has in the past. He wants Pete to know that, no, Pete doesn’t have to just accept the crumbs that fall on the floor off of Vegas’s table. He gets to sit at the table. When Vegas says “You’re the most important person in my life,” he’s saying “I still see you. I see you as person, not as a dog, the way the main family does, the way Kinn does, the way Kinn still does. I understand what you were telling me when you let me know that kind of treatment doesn’t feed you, doesn’t nourish you. And I’m not going to do that to you. This relationship is not going to be a poison pill. I’m going to feed you the way you deserve to be fed, treat you the way you actually deserve to be treated.”

And that’s why this line is just as important as Pete’s choice of Vegas over Kinn at the poolside scene, when Pete rejects the idea of someone else (Kinn) feeding him. This is practically in direct response to that. Pete’s made the choice that he wants Vegas to feed him, so Vegas is taking on the responsibility to feed him properly, and in contrast to the way Kinn and the main family have been feeding him.

Vegas is promising that Pete now gets to eat whenever he wants, whatever he wants, and that’s in direct contrast to the main family’s McDonald’s Kid Meal bodyguard rations version of affection.

No, but. Y’ALL.

I know I’ve said in the past that I think the shirt Vegas has Pete in during Ep 13 - the white one with the sleeves hacked off that Pete’s wearing when he runs from the safehouse - was probably one of Tawan’s leftover shirts (and I have never been so offended on Pete’s behalf in my life, jsyk). But I only just started to wonder how much Tawan helped screw up Vegas’s perceptions of how someone who wants to be your boyfriend is likely to act, and how much Vegas was trying to fit Pete into that mold - how much the shirt is the physical manifestation of what’s going on psychologically and emotionally, at that point. Vegas puts Pete in the (ex-)boyfriend’s shirt as a way of trying to fit him into his experience of how a boyfriend acts, right?

You can’t tell me Vegas has ever had a normal relationship in his life to model off of, but Tawan was Kinn’s long-term boyfriend. Tawan had an extensive relationship with Kinn - you know, the paragon who’s held up to Vegas as the model to beat, so surely, even though Vegas wasn’t happy with Tawan, he’s the kind of person who acts how a boyfriend acts, right? Or Kinn wouldn’t have stayed in a relationship with him, right? And yet, you also can’t tell me that Tawan, that desperately clingy mfk’r, wouldn’t have let Vegas keep him locked in the bedroom if only Vegas had wanted to - Tawan probably would have seen it as proof of Vegas’s devotion.

Also, if one of Tawan’s shirts is presumably lying around at the safehouse, it would indicate Tawan’s been there in the past - possibly as a getaway with Vegas? As a hideout during the time Kinn wasn’t supposed to know Tawan was still alive? At any rate, he may have even been introduced to Vegas’s safehouse sex dungeon, given the amount of time it would take to set all that up, which Vegas probably did NOT have before Kun packed him off to the safehouse this time. (:sadfaces: at the idea of Vegas having sad, bad bdsm sex with Tawan, neither of them actually enjoying it)

And oh my god, it only just hit me in these Pete-Tawan parallels, that this is precisely what Kinn does to Tawan (Vegas’s chess piece, who provides undercover intel and infiltrates enemy territory) earlier in the show. He locks him in a bedroom - where Tawan proceeds to hack off the sleeves of his shirts (like he’s 14-year-old me in dance class) - the way Vegas has Pete (Kinn’s chess piece, who infiltrates enemy territory to provide undercover intel) locked in a bedroom, in a similar shirt. I’m increasingly convinced that the similarities of the shirts are deliberate, even if the one Pete’s wearing isn’t actually supposed to be Tawan’s leftovers. (But I still think it is.)

I also think the blue shirt Vegas leaves for Pete's "escape" in Ep 12 was Tawan’s. I can’t remember offhand if we actually see him wearing a similar shirt in the show, but Perth-as-Tawan is wearing a similar one in the Filmania trailer.

We spend so much time in the show on Porsche-Tawan that it entirely escaped me until now that - given Porsche is also Pete is also Porsche - there’s actually a triangle here.
