Stuff I've been listening to: April 18th 2023

Where I talk about what music I've been listening to lately. Stuff I heard for the first time this week, and stuff that's been on my mind a lot even though it's not my first time listening.

Home, Like Noplace Is There by The Hotelier: I first found this album a few weeks back when one of its songs was used in a Crow Cillers AMV and I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since. It's got typical emo-style instrumentation - heavy guitars and drums and scream-singing. I think what makes it stand out to me is just how melodic it is, how flow-y the melodies are, and how much they use triplet time signatures like 6/8 or 9/8 (or 11/8 in one track!) An Introduction To The Album is my favorite example - it uses the typical scream-y vocal style of an emo song, but has no drums for most of the track, instead having a very flowing guitar part and lots of droning notes behind it. It's a very unique vibe, and combined with some hard-hitting lyrics about alienation, isolation, and the difficult state of living, it's a wonderful record.

Favorite song: An Introduction To The Album (Honorable mentions to Housebroken and Dendron which are both also amazing songs)

Agnes & Hilda by Patricia Taxxon: Historically I haven't listened to a whole lot of hyperpop, but I really love music that incorporates noisy/chaotic elements without going into unlistenable territory, and I think this album finds a good balance. The lyrics are well-written, at times flowery and poetic and at others direct and blunt, about topics ranging from the complexity of identity to the joys of being an artist. The pace of this album never slows down, and is definitely engaging throughout. (I only discovered Patricia recently, I've been listening to her other albums recently and I'm really liking her stuff so far!)

Favorite song: With my Tail to the World

Rookie's Bustle by Ada Rook: A lot of Ada's work is a bit too noise-heavy for my tastes, but this EP hits a really good sweet spot for me. It's not a particularly cohesive collection of songs, given that it consists of works from 2019-2022 that didn't fit into her other projects. But overall the vibe is good, lots of screaming, lots of crunchy industrial sounds, but still has a lot of good more melodic content, and I had fun listening.

Favorite song: CURSE (for Devi)

Popular Fiction by Gold Connections: This is a really solid alt-rock record, with a little bit of a bluegrass twang to it. It's full of religious references, a very 70s classic rock vocal style, and lyrics about how it's okay to not know what you're doing, because you're not alone. Also I really love a lot of the mixing on this album, New Religion in particular has some phenomenal panning with the various instruments and parts. It definitely falls on the lighter side of my music tastes, but there's still a little bit of that crunchiness and guitar feedback that I love. Overall, it's a nice chill listen.

Favorite song: New Religion (It's really hard to choose for this album, I also really love Icarus and Bad Intentions)

Review of Home Like Noplace is There - Hotelier

It is almost midnight here as I write this. On the first day of 2017.

Basking in the new year, I went on a jog today and spent some time watching Python tutorials on Youtube. I hugged my parents and really committed my New Year’s Resolutions to memory. As each year passes, I try to find more ways to improve myself and reflect on any of my strengths and imperfections. My relationship with music, similarly, relies on this heavy reflection that puts the music in a greater context.

What I mean by this is the reason I like to review albums from the past. Our ability to make first impressions is great, but these impressions are often horrible and unrealistic of the thing we are perceiving. When I first heard the opener An Introduction to the Album I thought it was horribly pretentious and whiny. I don’t know why, I may have just conditioned myself to think that the emotion behind it was exaggerated or fake when it was introduced to my ears. And with eight more songs and so many other albums to listen to, I kind of brushed this one off without giving it a fair chance.

But goddamn, this album grew on me like a dry sponge in water. While all of the hype over really overrated projects that tried so hard to be iconic or classic (talkin bout that throwback wannabe 70s bullish, basically every pop album two years ago) totally blended in with the woodwork and never really stood out. Home Like Noplace There Is, an album I dismissed too early for no obvious reason, is remarkable and in my mind a modern classic. Among the Wildflowers bends and churns these emotional verses with changing tempos, Your Deep Rest serves as an anthem for the realistic and clumsy feelings that follow after a loved one dies. At one point Life in Drag sucker punches with a post-hardcore approach with screaming that could have come from Merchant Ships, and the next song Housebroken feels like intelligent alternative rock radio. The variety throughout this album is truly enticing, and throughout its run every song proves itself.

I don’t have much more to say, writing without criticism is hard. Happy New Year!
