I got accepted into University College Cork's online master's programme for Irish folklore and mythology, beginning this fall. 😄🥰😭 I've been dreaming of it since I did a year in Ireland at University College Dublin in the folklore department, years ago.

Awwww. 🥺 It's the week before final class projects are due and so tonight's critique was focused on our works-in-progress. I had a specific ask regarding the composition of my WIP and a classmate was like, "I think there was this one piece back at the start of the semester that might be helpful for some inspiration, but I can't remember who it's from. It was this organic, like, looked kind of like Japanese mountains in ink with straight lines? Shit, it was really cool, but I can't remember the artist."

Second classmate: "..........That was [hound] lol."

Anyway, the one on the left was the "line as fundamental concept" exercise that Classmate was thinking of, and on the right is the current WIP which is probably gonna end up scratched and started over /sob.

During lab tonight, which involved basic but painstaking titration, my professor -- a nerd himself -- told me that he thought I'd make an excellent analytical chemist (the guys who do the particularly detail-oriented stuff like forensics) because of my patience and attention to detail.

I told him it probably came from being the kind of stealth gamer who will sit unmoving during gameplay for ten solid minutes just to memorize guards' paths. 😂

I am LOSING MY GODDAMN MIND and I can't move on until I scream about it.

So I'm reading Marc Drogin's Biblioclasm: The Mythical Origins, Magic Powers and Perishability of the Written Word, because I'm back on my calligraphy bullshit and I've always been a slut for matters related to the written word anyway.

But in the very first chapter, there's THIS paragraph, and only this paragraph, on Irish myth regarding alphabet development:

Classic misuse of 'Celtic' which is irritating but is actually the most mild of the sins here

Ogham wasn't a "clumsy creation" you condescending fucktruck it was a convenient way to communicate basic info like place names because THAT'S ALL THAT IT WAS NEEDED FOR AT THE TIME IN A CULTURE THAT RELIED PRIMARILY ON ORAL TRADITION. A TOOL THAT SERVES EXACTLY ITS PURPOSE IS NOT LACKING.

"which the Irish happily abandoned" or MAYBE it was a shift in cultural norms as the influence of Christianity -- and its reliance on written text -- meant a change in social need and reliance on oral tradition, and so it's entirely pragmatic to switch to a tool that already exists to address a particular need when that need arises, omg, the Irish aren't children dropping shitty toys when shinier new ones show up

"became aware of Christianity, and abandoned Lugh too" is just...the most reductive characterization of major cultural shifts I've ever seen, wow, he's lucky Ireland's conversion is generally considered a peaceful one because the alternative would make his hot fuckin take even more Awkward

Lyons is possibly named for Lugus, who may be etymologically related to Lugh, except that's about Gaulish stuff, and you may be surprised to learn that "Gaulish" is not in fact synonymous with "Irish"

....Vienna being named for Lugus is a new one for me but I'm willing to be convinced otherwise by scholarship

And like, some of this I'm willing to give folks a pass on when they're clearly not intending to build a whole thesis on it, this is just a random paragraph in passing, but the rest is like...my guy, even WIKIPEDIA got Ogma right! And Wiki, god bless its soul, is often very inaccurate on mythology and folklore!

But really, the worst part is the utter patronizing flippancy.
