Nothing quite prepares you for a jaw dropping experience. It’s unexpected. Sometimes a bit chaotic. And just a tiny drop of brain freeze. But in the end, it changes your life forever. I waited six months to attend the Sad Summer Festival with amazing headliners such as Mayday Parade, Neck Deep, and State Champs. But until recently, I didn’t know who Hot Mulligan were. The moment the lead singer slaughtered sound check with his vocals then walked off as if it were nothing, I knew we were in for one hell of a show! Now let’s back up. Hot Mulligan is a pop-punk band consisting of four members; Nathan Tades Sanville (lead singer), Chris Freeman (guitarist and vocalist), Ryan Malicsi (guitarist), Garrett Willig (bassist) and Brandon Blakeley (drummer). 

I discovered these guys three days prior to the festival. Within those days I found myself listening strictly to their songs on repeat. I connected to everyone of their songs. And let me just say this, when it comes to an opening, Nathan’s going to scream and I’m going to love every single second of it! By the time the festival came I had at least two and a half songs memorized. But that’s perfectly fine! I was excited for future me who’s going to dive head first into a rabbit whole that is this band and what they represent. I waited 5hrs pressed against a barricade to see them perform and though I don’t think I would want to endure that uncomfortable pain again. But for this band, I would just have to suck it up. 

Let’s just say their live performance is not an event you can walk away from unscathed. The band had an eccentric personality that was fun, playful, and made the venue feel like a bunch of friends kicking back listening to their cool friends play their music. Sure their song “Featuring Mark Hoppus” (currently my favorite song) brought up some memories but sounded too good for me to lose my shit to. But standing against the barricade listening to the song live - my heart actually broke. Shattered if you will. It was like the heartbreak I once experience in my adolescence finally dawn on me. Made me realize I wasn’t healed - I was far from it. And though I wanted to run away from the beaming lights that felt as though they were casting judgment on me. I noticed the crowd pouring their hearts out singing along to every note and I noticed the band putting their very soul into it. And in that moment, in that room surrounded by hundreds of people, I stopped head banging and stood still. 

It was the first time in my life I didn’t have to explain myself and I didn’t feel alone. That’s not even the most amazing part of the night. I did a bit of research before seeing this band live by watching videos of their past performances. BCKYRD is one of their most notably known songs and honestly has became a top favorite of mine. One thing I noticed is at the end of the song they go acapella in which the crowd sing along. I loved it! Thought it was absolutely adorable! Until I experience the moment for myself. It felt exhilarating! Like rain was pouring down all around us and by the end of the night we’d all said fuck it to everything life had thrown our way. Watching those recorded performances cannot remotely come close to the actual experience. I’ve come to realize that Hot Mulligan is a band you have to experience for yourself. I can’t just give you a song I might think you’ll like. Hot Mulligan are lyrical geniuses. 

I can give you 10 reasons. 20 reasons. 30 and so on why you should see this band live in concert but for now I’ll save the theatrics and settle with one. It was their authenticity and vulnerability that made me have an existential crisis mid concert and not feel embarrassed. A band that can do that is a band the world needs to get in on. I know I am.
