Cylinder Wax Seal of Montuhotep II - 11th Dynasty (2033-1982 BC) Mentuhotep II (Ancient Egyptian: (𓏠𓈖𓍿𓅱𓏛𓏏𓊪) “mntw-ḥtp” ‘Mentu is satisfied’), also known under his prenomen Nebhepetre (Ancient Egyptian: (𓇳𓎟𓊤) nb-ḥpt-rˁ, meaning ‘The Lord of the rudder of Ra’), was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh 𓉐𓉼 “pr-ˁ3” ‘Great House’, the sixth 𓏿 “sisw” ruler 𓋾𓏘𓄿𓀭 “ḥq3” of the Eleventh Dynasty. He is credited with reuniting Egypt/Kemet 𓆎𓅓𓏏𓊖 “kmt”, thus ending the turbulent First Intermediate Period and becoming the first pharaoh of the Middle Kingdom. He reigned for 51-years 𓆳𓊪𓏏𓏤𓎊𓏺, according to the Turin King List. Mentuhotep II succeeded his father Intef III 𓏎𓈖𓏏𓆑) “ı͗nı͗-ı͗t.f” ‘The one whom his father has brought forth’ on the throne 𓊨𓏏𓉗 “3s.t” and was in turn succeeded by his son 𓅭 “s3” Mentuhotep III. Description: The seal is engraved from electrum (gold-silver natural mix) and contains the Horus Name of the pharaoh 𓅃𓊂𓄥𓈃𓇳𓎟𓊤 “sm3-t3wy nb-ḥpt-rˁ” ‘The Uniter of the Two Lands, The Lord of the Rudder of Ra’. The name is surrounded by protective striking cobras. Suizid eines Ägyptologen. 1952 entdeckte der junge einheimische Ägyptologe Mohammed Zakaria Goneim die Pyramide des Pharao Sechemchet aus der 3. Dynastie (2 700 - 2695 v Chr) Einheimische Ägyptologen gab es ja nicht allzuviele und dem wenigen Nachwuchs mangelte es an Geld um spektakuläre Entdeckungen zu machen. Sie hatten nicht die Sponsoren wie die Amerikaner, Engländer oder andere Länder. Alle träumten davon, einmal ein unversehrtes Pharaonengrab zu entdecken wie das des Tutanchamun. So war man dann auch hoch erfreut, als man hörte, der Ägypter Zakaria Goneim hatte ein, wie es schien, noch versiegeltes Pharaonengrab gefunden. Pharao Sechemchet war der Horusname des Pharao Djoserteti. Nach Meinung unserer gestandenen Ägyptologen war Pharao Sechemchet ein Bruder des Pharao Djoser. Seine Pyramide sollte eine Stufenpyramide von etwa 70 Meter Höhe werden, der Stumpf erreichte aber nur 8 Meter, dann wurden die Bauarbeiten eingestellt. Die Pyramide liegt einige 100 Meter südwestlich der Stufenpyramide des Djoser auf der Nekropole von Sakkara mit einer Schenkellänge von 115 x 115 Meter. Auf der Umfassungsmauer des Pyramidenkomplexes konnte einige Zeit nach der Entdeckung das Grafitti des Universalgenie Imhotep gefunden werden. Vermutlich war er am Aufbau der Pyramide beteiligt. Nachdem die Steinblöcke der Pyramide von Pharao Djoser mit Feuerstein bearbeitet waren, fand man bei der Pyramide des Sechemchet eine Bearbeitung durch Kupfermeißel. Dann stellte der Ägyptologe Goneim bei seinen Ausgrabungen an der Pyramide fest, dass sie noch original verschlossen und versiegelt war. Das bedeutete soviel wie, noch nie waren Grabräuber in ihrem Innern und es gab einen großen Medien-Rummel. Allem Anschein nach war man 30 Jahre nach Öffnung des unbeschädigten Tutanchamun-Grabes erneut auf ein unversehrtes Zeugnis der damaligen Zeit gestoßen. This is my recreation on limestone of my friend’s “Horus” name (which is the first of five names of a pharaoh’s royal titles). The Horus name is the oldest form of the pharaoh's name, originating in prehistoric Egypt. Many of the oldest-known Egyptian pharaohs were known only by this title. The name displayed on the left side, is of the Pharaoh ‘Djet’ 𓅃𓆓𓊂(1st Dynasty, ca. 2980 BC). The Horus 𓅃 name is written in a serekh 𓊁, a representation of a palace façade. The name of the pharaoh 𓉐𓉼 “pr-eA” ‘Great House’ was written in hieroglyphics 𓌃𓂧𓅱𓀁𓊹 “mdw-ntr” inside this representation of a palace. Typically an image of the falcon god Horus was perched on top of or beside it. On the back side: an unknown god (right) gives (left) offerings. In the center is name of my friend in a cartouche perched above a symbol of stability 𓊽. The text on the right says, “All life, stability, power, and health. Like Ra/Rê.” On the right it says, “I have given you all happiness (literal: a long heart)”.
