TIOL LIVEBLOG: PART 4

holy shit, game-canon character time

I like how Joey is still into old-fasioneds like in DCTL

Joey Drew discovers how packaging design works

Part 4, Chapter 3

Joey: “I wasn’t gay for Henry” *NateA: “yes he was”

I like the contrast with Nathan considering Joey humble for not holding a grudge with Henry, but in reality he just stole all his shit and Henry left due to poor work environment

BATIM AU where Henry enters Joey’s apartment at the end and starts smacking him with a copy of this book

Henry is so bland that Joey instantly forgot his face rip

Apparently Abby is only the interim head of the art department. Not the impression I got from DCTL but whatever

not even sure if the archives are canon (probably not) but I wonder if Joey’s habit of visiting art shows factor into it

Assuming he’s not lying (which is a pretty big assumption) Joey made the BG rather than Henry. Makes sense, I don’t think they debuted until after Henry left

Henry: give me credit Joey: anyway Abby was my inspiration

“I half expected that you would be an animated character, not an actual human being” this is either more Joey-is-story-Bendy stuff, or foreshadowing for BATDR

bruh if you think people want an honest-sounding lie instead of a critique you’re not a very good art director

“a small man with a surprisingly low voice came over to talk to him” is a weirdly specific description but I don’t think it’s anyone or else Joey would’ve mentioned it

“I might even argue I don’t even have a subconscious anymore” Joey walks into his board meeting calls everyone a bitch and leaves

I feel like Joey’s reaction to Abby’s sketch is exactly how he reacts to the deformed ink creatures whenever they’re made

Abby’s like me in the “can draw realistically but can’t draw cartoons” corner

Part 4, Chapter 4

"I have excellent control over my emotions” is like, fucking hysterical

Joey spends so much of this book just dragging Henry into the dirt aljfd. we get it you had a bad breakup

“Boris was special” wondering what the hell that means

“Boris came to me in a dream, Alice was a pain in the ass, the Butcher Gang were a mistake”

“Something that wasn’t Bendy. I will never understand that drive” is a pretty clear nod to Henry wanting to be with Linda, which makes for a nice contrast with Joey regretting not having a family of his own

It’s weird, because Joey keeps saying he made Bendy, yet the scene in which he was made clearly shows Henry doing it. Like he didn’t even try to hide it

Part 4, Chapter 5

"I did make a mistake once. I fixed it” the only time Joey has done that in his life, ever

Part 4, Chapter 6

I’m assuming the chapter title is an intentional reference, given that this is a well-known song (not this remix specially, just in general

honestly I kind of love Sammy’s backstory

he blatantly says it wasn’t his birthday a page after he said it was

Jack just like, radiates Good Vibes(TM)

I can see why they’re friends. Jack takes all the attention off of Sammy who really doesn’t want it

Joey has like, a major issue with having the urge to shove people off of high places

I’d also like to point out that this is canonically the first time they’ve been confirmed to be friends. This does imply some tension between them, probably because Jack’s need for attention rubs Sammy the wrong way sometimes

Sammy just walked up and made Joey his bitch. iconic

Part 4, Chapter 7

I like how Joey shows them the little animation of Bendy dancing from Chapter 1, nice touch

I have no idea how to take Sammy’s “you need a girl” other than he’s been drinking his respect women juice

Sammy: “maybe I’ll worship a God if you make a good enough one” Joey: “is that a challenge motherfucker”

In terms of characterization:

Henry seems right, nothing else to say there

I know some people have said Jack being an attention whore doesn’t fit with canon, but he mentions needing a quiet place to compose here, so I think he’s just the type of creative who can’t focus with noise and not someone who doesn’t want to be around other people by default. Him brushing off Joey getting their award is a bit more questionable, but I also noticed here that Sammy was the one who dictated if they both took the job (Jack obvs. wanted it but still). I don’t think him wanting attention and him being a pushover are two incompatible ideas.

Sammy is much better here than in DCTL (he’s not being an open bigot, for starters). I do question if he’s being a bit too much of an asshole though. Don’t get me wrong, he is, but I got the impression from BATIM (and the Hot Topic Q&A) that he can be an asshole sometimes, but isn’t 24/7. Seems a hair too aggressive here, especially as he doesn’t have a reason to be pissy. He’s not openly mean like he was in DCTL though, so like I said, it’s better.

Sorry to sound completely off the wall and random, but are there any pairings in batim that you like?

Heya!

This is not off the wall at all! I love all the varied combos of character interactions in this fandom a lot, and part of that is definitely considering who might be interesting smooching who!

That said, I quite enjoy?? Cute shipping content?? But I've never been much of a generator of it myself. I got stuck on these asks for awhile and started a few different attempts at answers, not because I wasn't delighted to discuss these various disasters, but because shipping is a place I sometimes feel I have less general thoughts on? If it was specific iterations/AUs I might have more!

If we're talking canon, there's just so little that I feel like the content I like is just canon-compliant AU anyways.

So I think what I'm going to do is just list ships I've liked in some form or another so far??

I think my favorite is Sammy and Jack, especially in Escape AU. I love the idea of that kind of long history, the way two arguably very odd people can just make sense to one another and all the places they'd rub others the wrong way are just comfortable to each other. They seem like a super solid 'greater than the sum of their parts' ships and I am soft for so much about their specific dynamic. Also just a big fan of the 'one who is angry and hurt and sharp being exposed to soft sincere caring and having...a feeling??? and having no idea how to process it' Just so good.

Sammy and Joey in Cthulhu is really good, though honestly I think I just really enjoy their dynamic in general. Okay look disclaimer, I really like EVERYONE'S dynamic in Cthulu AU A LOT, Henry and Joey's non-romantic but deep familiarity that lets them communicate non-verbally in a pinch without hesitation, Jack and Sammy again being just SO GOOD and quietly in sync (unless their insanities go and rudely turn their dynamic on its head, lol) I've loved seeing how the Lurker settles into the mix too.

Since a couple people were wondering about Sammy x Joey specifically, I feel like it would have been a train wreck in canon, and I find @inkdemonapologist 's theories based on the book pretty compelling in regards to Sammy being more trapped than either of them are willing to let on by the end.

I enjoy Susie and Norman a lot independently, I don't have a lot of headcanons per se but I would be interested in content shipping them, whether together or with others, and I really like the idea of them bantering. Sammy thrown in here somewhere also sounds high quality.

I really like the idea of a Joey seeking redemption managing to connect with Henry in some form, and the idea of them being young crushes also sounds fun.

I feel like it's been said a fair bit but on the subject of Sammy x Henry @backlitrabbit 's La Vie En Noir is SOOO GOOOD It scratched the itch I had for a complete journey from game to escape and it did it with a lot of panache and solid foreshadowing....and really adorable Senry.

Hmm I am interested in Allison and Tom and exploring the synergy that would draw them together, though again, not a lot of fully solidified thoughts yet?

BATIM Sims: Studio Quartet

Alright, I’ve been overdue to share some of the individual shots from my Sims gallery, so today, I’m gonna start you off with the Studio Quartet household. This household consists of Jack Fain, Norman Polk, Shawn Flynn, and Grant Cohen. I’m gonna outline them in the order they were made below.

Norman Polk:

Norman was the hardest to find an aspiration for, so because these are for my AU, Kraken’s Labyrinth, I decided, the heck with it, let this man just enjoy the beach. His traits focused on his sense of humor and confidence. I’ll admit, I debated giving him Insider instead of Foodie, but the description made it sound too pretentious, which Norman is absolutely not, so we went the headcanon route. I think he looks really handsome in checkers. Definitely a simple dresser, but it’s classy and gets the job dobe. For my AU, he’s an anglerfish, I gave him a tail that lights up a little at the spots. It feels like a decent fit. 

Shawn Flynn:

Shawn is one of the first times I pulled up a real person to reference for a Sim. I was on call with some friends, and they were curious to see what would happen if I used Jacksepticeye as my base, so I looked to him and Mythicality (one of my favorite cosplayers for Shawn) for this. Honestly, it was a fun challenge! He definitely needs the cool hat, how can you not have the cool hat? I’ll admit, the green hair is probably a stretch for the time period, but I’m going with the headcanon of ‘Jack has a kid that likes to paint, and sometimes he comes to work with paint in his hair.” He had colored hair before it was cool. XD One of my favorite details are his pants. I’m pretty sure they’re from the Get Famous pack as a part of the makeup artist attire, but I don’t care, it would be a cool way to have paintbrushes on the go. I may just give them to my persona. XD

Jack Fain:

Now we’re getting into familiar territory. Jack and Grant are some of the few BATIM characters you’ve seen my drawn designs for, even if it was eons ago. XD Jack over here is very much headcanon territory, and with the recent information we got on him, I may be moving some things around. I imagine he and Sammy both have fabulous hair, and he also really loves good food. My Jack loves baking, especially baklava and other Greek/Middle Eastern dishes. I can see him bringing in some great treats for holiday parties, Henry loves his food over in Searching the Depths. He notably has a very large nose, because I’m cruel to him with that whole “working in the sewers” thing, and because I like a good schnoz now and again. That, and while searchers don’t have much of a face, they do have noses, and I felt that was important to keep for him.

Grant Cohen:

He has some great hair like Will Ryan, but that’s about all they have in common. I’ll admit, my Grant is very much so a fandom Grant: shy, nervous, incredibly skittish, easy to manipulate, etc. So much like Norman (and everyone else for that matter) he deserves a vacation. My Grant takes his visual cues from Maurice from Beauty and the Beast. He’s a very proper fellow, but also very nice and down to Earth. Putting him in a household with these three gives him a nice support network, and I’m glad I did that. He needs it. ^^’’

It’s funny, I actually made a more Depths-centric Grant Sim last night, and I didn’t think to look at this Sim while I did it, so the two have very different traits. I’ll have to share him with you later. For now though, have some shenanigans!

Some of these might be familiar to you from the last livestream I hosted, and some are not because they’re from more recently. XD Norman was a little glitchy in the water on Sunday, but that’s okay, so long as no one drowns I’m good. But the sleeping in the pool? I was not expecting that. X’’’D Like all four of them just went and slept in the pool, I didn’t know merfolk could do that before this point! 

So yeah, those are my adventures in the Sims 4 with the Studio Quartet. I don’t play with this household often, but I do like them. They were fun to design, and the varied personalities make for some interesting interactions.

Favorite thing about them:

I’m a sucker for vintage, so absolutely love Jamie’s silent movie era aesthetic, it just opens up a lot of possiblites with his character, ya know?

Least favorite thing about them:

What was up with that one part of Jameson’s first video where Anti rips off his mustache to just reveal Jack’s real mustache underneath it? Second hand embarrassment XD Jamie is baby tho.

Favorite line:

100% “Oh. Thanks, Satan. Very cool!” We stan a chaotic good boy.

BrOTP:

My top brOTP for Jamie is probably Marvin or Chase! The three would probably get along so well as entertainers for one thing: similar to Henrik and Jackie I’ve always headcanoned Jamie and Marvin to have a sort of familial type relationship? And with Chase it’s because of their conflicting personalities and how they could bounce off of each other.

OTP:

I don’t really have a concrete OTP for Jamie: I’ve seen some super adorable works pairing him with Shawn Flynn from BATIM though!

NOTP:

Again I don’t really have one! I don’t like most Jameson/Anti unless it’s soft! Anti so I guess that would count?

Random headcanon:

Jamie loves dancing and preforming! It’s one of the things he has the most in common with the egos, especially with Marvin as he frequently helps out and even joins the magician in his performances. I also headcanon that Henrik knows how to swing dance, so the two bond over that! Chase will tag along sometimes and eventually he asks Jamie if he could teach him so he can try and dance with Henrik :)

Unpopular Opinion:

Honestly I don’t think I have one, we have so little to go off of for Jamie’s backstory that I think people pretty accepting of whatever (he’s totally an unwilling puppet tho, a good bean)

Song I associate with them:

Probably the PostmodernJukebox cover of “Young and Beautiful” by Lana Del Ray! Though an unorthodox choice would be “You Don’t Own Me” by Lesley Gore: Badass Jamie breaking away from Anti’s grip and never turning back.
