The Weak Gelsemium
Let us understand the Gelsemium mind today It is the quietness with weakness which differentiates Gelsemium from other remedies. The Materia Medica describes the Gels person to be quiet, who wants to be let alone, does not wish to speak, or have anyone near him, even if the person be so silent. We need to differentiate acid remedies here. The acids are weak and indifferent, the weakness is deep,…

Still waiting for someone to win a paranormal challenge...
I have never been able to trust anything, including paranormal incidents or powers some people claim to have witnessed, that cannot be scientifically explained. Belief in ghostly things is absurd when nobody, NOBODY, nobody on earth has won any of the paranormal challenges created by skeptics offering handsome monetary rewards to those who can prove the evidence of paranormal or supernatural. Inspired by Abraham Kovoor's paranormal challenge which is now continued by the Indian Rationalist Association, the One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge and many similar challenges were introduced by rationalists all across the globe. Several preachers of the existence of supernatural elements interested in proving themselves right have tried to win the paranormal challenges in vain. Some of those self-proclaimed paranormal experts were rather desperate for the rewards. The JREF employees once received phone calls from angry "ghosts" (well, a rejected applicant pretending to be the ghosts who would like to assist him in telekinesis...) threatening to file charges of harrassment against the organisation for not being allowed to take the test.
Australian Skeptics is ready to pay 100,000 Australian dollars to "anyone who claims to have psychic or paranormal powers to demonstrate their ability under proper observing conditions". The confederation's editor and executive officer Tim Mendham informs, We have been running tests for our challenge for more than 40 years. In fact, Australia Skeptics started following a test of water diviners in 1980. We have people applying for the challenge every week, but most are not residents of Australia, so they don’t qualify. Many others have trouble pinning down exactly how to scientifically test their skills. But, overall we have tested about 200 people. We have an initial test to see how their skills work and to see if they are effective. This is followed by a more rigorous test along scientific protocols for the $100,000. The test procedures and expected outcomes have to be agreed by both sides prior to proceeding to ensure that the applicant and skeptics are confident the test is a fair trial of their skills. If the participants are not happy with the test set-up, then we do not proceed. So far no-one has passed the first test.
Some non-profit organizations, conducting their respective paranormal challenges, are known not to interfere with religions. Does religion not fall under the supernatural category in a paranormal challenge? Centre for Inquiry's J. Dellinger replies, The Center for Inquiry is an organization dedicated to reason, science, and secular values. As such, we regard religion and “the supernatural” as largely the same, in that they are belief-based perspectives with no grounding in science or empirical fact. For purposes of the Paranormal Challenge, we do not make a distinction when testing applicants based on whether their claimed ability is or is not related to a religious belief. The same standard of testing and evaluation applies in any case.
However, I don't think alternative medicines such as Homeopathy should be challenged under the category of pseudoscience or any other for the same reason religious rituals specifically aren't. Homeopathic medicines' preparation processes, especially the level of dilution of individual potentized homeopathy medicine, vary, more or less, from one pharmacy to another. The quality of raw materials (compounds mentioned in the Materia Medica) for trituration may not be the same for all licensed pharmacies either. For example, a Bryonia 30C from one pharmaceutical company doesn't even taste the same as the Bryonia 30C from another (I have tasted them and you can do it too). Unlicensed pharmacies may not even follow the country's official Homeopathic pharmacopoeia and protocols of preparing Homeopathic medicines. And there are a number of Homeopathic pharmacopoeias with their respective revised editions that aren't largely accepted. So, it seems rather difficult to come up with a test that can prove how effective Homeopathy is as it's inconsistent just like religion. Moreover, rationalists would do more harm than good by shaking one's faith in Homeopathy if it's nothing more than placebo effect because placebo effect can indeed make patients feel better. We can't draw a conclusion about homeopathy based on a homeopath's ability to tell if a vial contains pure water or homeopathic medicine. A better aim would be to direct people's attention towards the benefits of evidence-based medicine without bashing alternative medicine. What's the difference between believing in a course of treatment whose effectiveness can't yet be scientifically proven and being religious?

Blood Root
Botanical Name: Sanguinaria canadensis
Common Name: Bloodroot, Red Root, Puccoon, Paucon, Pauson, Red Puccoon, Coonroot and Indian paint ((( all refer to Native American uses of the plant to color skin, clothes, and baskets ))) tetterwort ((( old english for skin disease ))) , sleep slumber, and snakebite ((( all of which were used mostly by Old English speakers ))).
Family: Papaveraceae or Poppy family
Parts Used: Rhizome, Root,
Energetics and Taste: Harsh, Bitter, Acrid. Drying and cooling in small amounts, warming and stimulating in larger amounts.
Actions and Properties: Bloodroot is currently used to cause expectoration and to clear the respiratory pathways of mucus. The herb can be taken internally to treat a variety of ailments such as asthma, emphysema, laryngitis, bronchitis, pharyngitis, sore throats, and croup. Cough lozenges are made by mixing fresh sap from roots with maple syrup or sugar. A homeopathic remedy containing bloodroot has also been used to treat migraines. Fresh bloodroot sap or an infusion of the root can be applied externally to treat warts, benign skin tumors, ulcers, eczema, chilblains, or ringworm. The dried powder can be sniffed to treat nasal polyps. Sanguinarine, the medicinally valuable alkaloid found in bloodroot sap, is purported to have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties that inhibit the formation of plaque and reduce gingival inflammation and bleeding. Research has shown that the alkaloid is retained in the mouth for long periods after brushing, providing longer resistance to plaque and gingival inflammation.
Constituents: Bloodroot exudes a bright orange-red sap from all parts when cut, with the highest concentrations found in the rhizome where the juices are stored. The sap contains isoquinoline alkaloids, red resin, and an abundance of starch. Sanguinarine is the predominant alkaloid, making up 50 percent of the total alkaloid content. The alkaloids in the sap contribute to the medicinal properties of the herb, though they can also be poisonous in large doses, causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fainting, dilated pupils, and heart failure. The alkaloids in bloodroot have strong antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties. The herb has also been described as having antiseptic, cathartic, diuretic, emetic, emmenagogue, escharotic, expectorant, febrifuge, sedative, spasmolytic, stimulant, and tonic properties.
Description: Plants reach a height of 6 to 12 inches at maturity, though they are typically only half that height at the time of bloom. Each plant consists of a single leaf wrapped tightly around a flower bud; the leaf opens to expose the flower as it blooms. Bloodroot leaves are kidney shaped, with five to nine rounded lobes arranged palmately and covered with a whitish-gray down. The pale underside of the leaf is prominently veined. Once the flowers have faded, the basal leaves persist until August, when they turn a deeper green and reach their maximum size of 6 to 10 inches. Each waxy, white flower grows on a single stem up to 8 inches in height, blooming around late March and early April. Flowers are roughly 2 inches in diameter, with gold-colored stamens in the center. Whereas other members of the Papaveraceae family have flowers with 4 petals, bloodroot flowers have 8 to 10 petals arranged in 2 to 4 rows.
Habitat: Bloodroot is mostly found in rich woodlands or on sunny-to shady edges of wooded areas, on slopes, or on bottomlands along shaded streams. Bloodroot prefers light-to-medium well-drained soils with a sandy-to-loamy texture. Bloodroot can tolerate a range of pH, but does best in soils with a pH of 5 to 7 or higher. Soils with a layer of leaf cover in cool areas under deciduous trees are optimal. Bloodroot is an indicator species for birch-maple-basswood and hardwood forests.
Harvesting/ Propagation: Bloodroot can be propagated by seed, root division, or leaf cuttings. Seeds can be sown in outdoor beds in the spring or summer, or in a cold frame in winter. A cold stratification period is required for the seed to produce a root, then another warm and cold period to produce a shoot. Rhizomes can be divided by breaking them into small pieces, each of which should contain one bud. This is typically done in late summer or early fall after the leaves die back. Leaf cuttings can be taken from shoots in late spring and set in a protected cold frame until the plants are established.
Preparation and Dosage: Roots are harvested in order to then make them into a powder or to make a dried root tincture. In small doses, bloodroot is relaxing and soothing, particularly on the bronchial muscles. In moderate doses, the herb has stimulating and emetic properties.
Contradictions/ Cautions: Large doses can cause irritation of the mucus membranes. Other negative side effects can either be a burning or stinging sensation in the mouth, or a sloughing of the epithelium cells when used orally. The alkaloids in the sap can be poisonous in large doses, causing nausea, vomiting, dizziness or fainting, dilated pupils, and heart failure. Should not used during Pregnancy. Regarded as abortifacient. Seeds are narcotic, with effects said to be similar to Datura seed ((( can cause death if taken internally ))). People should not use this herb unless under the guidance of a trained health care practitioner. The fresh root is more dangerous than the dry root.  Do not use more than 1-2 drops every 2-4 hours in acute phase, then 1-2 drops per day after the acute phase. Long term use may be contraindicated. Long term users of products with sanguinarine in them have increased incidence of leukoplakia.
Ethnobotanical Considerations: Bloodroot is listed as “At-Risk” by the United Plant Savers organization. Often collected from the wild and marketed domestically and internationally, the plants on the “At-Risk” list have experienced pressure due to over-collection or habitat loss. This pressure, combined with the innate sensitivity and rarity of the plants listed, has led to the rapid decline of wild populations in their native ranges.
History/ Folklore/ Mythology: Native Americans used bloodroot as a dye, love charm, and potent medicine. European colonists learned of the Native American medicinal uses for the herb and adopted them to suit their own needs and as early as the 1800s Bloodroot was described in pharmacopoeias. In the mid-19th century at the London Middlesex Hospital, Dr. J. Weldon Fell experimented with the use of bloodroot to treat skin cancers. Although used extensively at that time, the treatment eventually fell out of use until its revival in the 1960s for minor skin tumors, particularly those in the nose and ears. As of the year 2000 researchers were studying the ability of bloodroot alkaloids to selectively fight cancer cells without harming normal cells. Although it has experimentally shown anti-proliferative potential towards human carcinoma cells, current in vitro studies are not conclusive and more research is needed before bloodroot is considered for development as a commercial anticancer drug. Sanguinarine has been used in toothpaste and oral rinses. Bloodroot can be used as a botanical dewormer for cattle and sheep.

What is Homeopathic Medicine?
Homeopathic Medicine is a form of alternative medicine that first came to fruition in Germany over 200 years ago. It's basis is on two principles:
"Like cures like" - or the idea that substances that produce positive symptoms in healthy humans will produce similar symptoms in those with disease.
"Law of minimum dose" - or the idea that the lower the dose of a substance, the greater effectiveness it will have. Homeopathic medicine is often diluted (with this logic in mind.
Tumblr media
Although homeopathic medicine is often seen as controversial since its efficacy beyond context cannot be proven (placebo effect anyone?), there may be potential in certain natural remedies to decrease symptoms such as anxiety and fear in rodents, and potentially humans.
Tumblr media
Gelsemium sempervirens:
Gelsemium sempervirens may sound like Latin jargon for a Harry Potter magic potion, but in actuality it is a twining evergreen vine! According to Materia Medica, Gelsemium sempervirens can treat various symptoms associated with discomfort in new and unfamiliar situations, such as anxiety and fear. Not many studies have been conducted on this, and for this reason, Bellavite et al. decided to test this compound in comparison with conventional medicines such as diazepam in their study titled "Homeopathic Doses of Gelsemium sempervirens Improve the Behavior of Mice in Response to Novel Environments."
Tumblr media
Overall Study Design:
For this study, 4-5 week old male mice were used and separated into different injection groups: centesimal dilutions of G. sempervirens, the reference drug diazepam, or a placebo solvent vehicle. G. sempervirens was supplied and prepared by Boiron Laboratories, a French homeopathic product company.
G. sempervirens and the control vehicle (placebo) were administered intraperitoneally everyday for 9 days at 9 a.m. The last two days of the 9 day period were designated for behavioral tests such as the Light Dark and Open Field Tests. During these 2 days mice still received treatment. Mice belonging to the benzodiazepine standard treatment group were similarly injected with the control solution for the 9 day period, and on testing days, the control solution was supplemented with diazepam, a conventional medicine prescribed for anxiety.
Diazepam
Diazepam is an oral medication often prescribed to treat anxiety, withdrawal symptoms associated with alcohol use, seizures, and muscle spasms. Diazepam is classified as a Benzodiazepine, which is classified as a depressant and sedative drug. What can be problematic about Benzodiazepines is that they have a potential of being addictive to vulnerable populations. Although the addictive nature behind benzodiazepines has not yet been elucidated, it is thought that this class of drug increases the firing rate of dopamine (DA) neurons of the ventral segmental area (VTA) through mechanisms positively modulating GABAa receptors in nearby interneurons. Addiction has been tied to increased DA and affects the mesolimbic reward pathway. A study by Tan et al. discovered that Benzodiazepines share similar characteristics to addictive substances through cell-type specific expression of alpha1-containing GABAaRs located within the VTA.
Tumblr media
Additional side effects of diazepam in particular include paranoia, suicidal thoughts, impaired memory, coordination, judgement calls, and breathing issues. For patients with anxiety, some may have a higher risk of suicidal ideation, and for this reason, it is important to consider what medications are given and what side effects may be especially harmful.
For this reason, it may be beneficial to research into less addictive substances as a treatment method for anxiety disorders. In comparison to benzodiazepines such as diazepam, homeopathic medicine, derived from natural plants, vines, and herbs might be a novel treatment option for those with a family history of addiction.
Results - LD Choice
Tumblr media
LD Test: The LD test, or Light Dark Test, is a behavioral assessment conducted based on the rodent's natural aversion to bright light. Typically, control mice will scurry away from lighted areas into the dark portion of the test box. Mice displaying anxiolytic behavior on the other hand, will show higher time spent in the lighted area and in the transitional area located between the light and dark compartments.
Tumblr media
This study found that the mean time spent by the control group (placebo-treated) animals in the illuminated area was 15.98%. they found that for mice treated with G. sempervirens it was 18.11% (non-significant). Diazepam instead significantly increased the mean time spent in the illuminated compartment to 19.91% (P = .047) (Bellavite et al. 2011). In regards to transition numbers between light and dark compartments, the study found that there was very small increase in the G sempervirens administered group, while there was a significant rise in the diazepam treated group from a mean of 6.19 (control) to 9.64 (Bellavite et al. 2011).
Results - OF Exploration
Tumblr media
OF Exploration: The OF test, otherwise known as the Open Field Test, is a behavioral assessment in which you place a mouse into an unfamiliar environment to observe different aspects of behavior such as exploratory and emotional behavior. The percentage of time spent in the central zone of the Open Field can be associated with exploratory behavior and lower anxiety levels. The tendency to stay on the edges of the field is called thigmotaxis, and is often considered an indicator of highly emotional behavior.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This study found that the placebo-treated control animal group spent 6.34% of the time in the center of the OF arena, while the G. sempervirens treated group spent an increased amount of time in the central zone of the Open Field: 7.86% (P = .009) (Bellavite et al. 2011). The action of diazepam in this test was found to be completely ineffective. The study additionally found that there was a positive effect of G sempervirens treatment on distance travelled in the central zone by the mice. The mean increased from 589.9 to 738.9 cm (P = .003) (Bellavite et al. 2011).
Tumblr media
Hypothetical Mechanism of G. sempervirens
Tumblr media
So how does G. sempervirens actually work from a neurological level? A previous study conducted by Venard et al. in 2007 found that G. sempervirens principal component Gelsemine enhances allopregnanolone neurosteroid enzymatic synthesis. Allopregnanolone, produced by progesterone, is an active stimulator of GABAa, 5HT, and nicotinic Ach receptors, and therefore has an inhibitory effect on the central nervous system, reducing the impulse generation in postsynaptic neurons. By refining inhibitory transmission through the glycinergic system and allopregnanolone synthesis, G. sempervirens may help the nervous system adapt to adverse and unfamiliar situations (Venard et al. 2008).
Applications to Medicine
Tumblr media
The Bellavite et al. study ultimately investigated the effects of Gelsemium sempervirens, a homeopathic remedy derived from evergreen vine, on certain behavior of mice, using two models that allow the expression of various “symptoms” of emotional responses, influenced by emotional states of fear, curiosity or anxiety. This was a very interesting study and allowed for a comprehensive profile of behavior in response to adverse or unfamiliar environments and stimuli which can cause anxiety and fear responses.
Tumblr media
This study shows that despite the controversy and skepticism of homeopathic medicine, doses of G. sempervirens can positively influence the emotional responses of mice to new environments, promoting exploratory behavior and suggesting a decrease in thigmotaxis. (Bellavite et al. 2011). It may be an effective treatment option for treating anxiety, and may have less harmful side effects compared to typical medication prescribed!

Homeopathic book Introduction of Materia Medica Reviewed by Prof. Shreepad Hegde
Tumblr media
Materia Medica is written by Prof. Dr G. Nagendra Babu. Many of the books on homeopathic materia medica are compilations of symptoms produced by the drugs. Many materia medicas available now are aiming at understanding the drug pictures. Readers of homeopathic materia medica complain that different views of authors’ on different drug pictures create confusion in the minds of beginners of materia medica. During my 33 years of teaching in Homeopathic College I was not in a position to suggest any one book (which covers all the required portion) for the beginners and fresh teachers, now I am confident that Professor Nagendra Babu’s book will fulfill this lacuna. Author’s conscious attempt in keeping the language very simple is aimed at blooming students of materia medica. On going through the book one can understand the sincere efforts taken by author in compiling the data from different sources and presenting it in his own lucid style of writing. This book has covered almost all the topics needed to understand the philosophy and principle of homeopathic materia medica for students. Chapters like history of materia medica, relationship of remedies, applied materia medica in learning and practice, group remedies in homeopathic materia medica will be useful to undergraduates as well as post graduate students. This book no doubt will make an addition to the text books on homeopathic materia medica. As the title suggests this book aptly named as an introductory preparation to homeopathic materia medica for beginners. As per the authors’ narrative the subject is based on the new curriculum introduced by the C.C.H standard regulations for the preliminary study. I hope that both the profession as well as students will welcome and utilize this book and be benefitted by the labors of Prof. Dr G. Nagendra Babu.

The History and Importance of Homeopathy
Before getting into the specifics of a homeopath's schooling, it's important to understand that those who practice Homeopathy are a diverse group of qualified health professionals. There is also a tiny but active number of dedicated unlicensed Homeopathic practitioners.
Some physicians specialize in Homeopathy and give Homeopathic medications to 75-100 percent of their patients, while others have not learned the complex system of Homeopathy and only prescribe these natural medicines to a tiny number of their patients. These practitioners are usually only familiar with a restricted number of Homeopathic remedies and only use them for acute, rather than chronic, diseases.
Medical doctors are the health professionals who specialize in homeopathy the most in the Western world. In Europe, where homeopathy is one of the most popular alternative medicines, it is estimated that over 30% of French physicians and 20% of German physicians prescribe homeopathic medicines (Fisher and Ward, 1994), and over 40% of British physicians refer patients to homeopathic doctors (Wharton and Lewith, 1986), and 45% of Dutch physicians believe Homeopathic medicines are effective (Wharton and Lewith, 1986). (Kleijnen, Knipschild and Riet, 1991). These large figures suggest that homeopathy may no longer be considered "alternative medicine" in Europe.
Naturopathic physicians, chiropractors, acupuncturists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and nurses are among the other licensed professionals in the United States who specialize in Homeopathy. Homeopathic remedies are also used by hundreds of veterinarians and dentists for a big number of their patients.
Because Homeopathy is such an important element of naturopathic education, many naturopathic doctors choose to specialize in it. A distinct organization of naturopathic homeopaths exists (The Homeopathic Academy of Naturopathic Physicians).
Chiropractors, on the other hand, have a tendency to dabble in a variety of natural therapies, and while there are more chiropractors prescribing Homeopathic medicines than any other health practitioner in the United States, just a small percentage of chiropractors specialize in Homeopathy.
In 1990, there were only three Homeopathic training programmes and three naturopathic medical schools in the United States. Over 20 training programmes and five naturopathic medical schools existed in 1997. (Ullman, 1996).
Homeopathy training programmes are typically three or four years long, with extended weekend (three or four-day) courses held once a month or every other month. There is a lot of homework assigned and required.
Homeopathic training programmes include in-depth instruction in Homeopathic philosophy, case taking, case analysis, materia medica, and a repertory (repertory refers to important texts/databases that list the specific medicines that are known to cause a specific symptom in overdose and cure it in Homeopathic doses).
