Book Review by Dr Syed Afsar Ali On Essentials of Boger’s Principles & Practice of Homoeopathy

The Prolific writer, Dr. Shashi KantTiwari. after being an author of “Essentials of Repertorization”, “Homoeopathy and Child Care”, “Boenninghausen - Boger Final General Repertory”, contributes to the Homoeopathic field recently through the book “Essentials of Boger’s Principles & Practice of Homoeopathy” with an attempt to gather the scattered works of Dr. C.M. Boger. He mentions in his preface how he had came up with the idea of compiling the Boger’s work and further he had hope that this book too, like that of Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy, by Dr. Kent, Principles and Art of Cure by Homoeopathy, by Dr. H.A.Roberts, The Genius of Homoeopathy, by Stuart Close would be a guide book to understand the principles governing the practice of Homoeopathy.

Dr. C.M.Boger during his active practice life between the years 1890 – 1935, presented many lectures, presentations, had discussions with contemporary stalwarts and practitioners, his case analysis and prescriptions depicting the mode of his practice. At Boger’s time, both the Boenninghausen and Kentian schools were popular. Boger studied both but accepted Boenninghausen’s way of working out of a case. He minimized the error of Grand Generalization and his work is seen as an attempt to bridge Boenninghausen and Kent. This book proves to be one, where we can find the valuable works of Boger at one place.

In further articles he described about the whole case perceiving, about suppression, relation of pathology with homoeopathy, about the Genus Epidemicus, clinical verification, the homoeopathic view point of cancer, therapeutic of panaritium, therapeutics of obstetrics, Children remedies and Climacteric remedies. The author has included articles related to Boger's views on Tuberculosis and Cancer. At the end, articles related to Materia, its study, development, genius of Materia Medica, Strontium salts and gymnacladus is like a cherry on the top of icing.

● There are few Miscellaneous articles as well such as “Veterinary Homoeopathy”, “President’s Address” which would add a pearl in the Homoeopathic Ocean.

Review: -

Over all the word meanings given under each paragraph are very useful for the students who joined in the course of Organon and also many translations for the German and Latin words used in various aphorisms and foot notes of every aphorism is very much appreciated .

The alphabetical arrangement of the words given in each paragraph is very good but I feel the words may be used in the same order as they are used in each aphorism would be very easy and quick reference for the students to refer

The frame of every edition of Organon is clearly mentioned with all novelties introduced in every edition.

Clear Demonstration of 5th Edition and changes of 6th Edition are mentioned wherever it is required

Over all the Font and Highlighting of difficult words with their meaning is appreciated.

Comparison table of various paragraphs of different editions is good

Few editions of Organon of Medicine by Samuel Hahnemann are now not available in print form but in this book there is a reference of all editions i.e., 1st,2nd, 3rd , 4th, 5th, 6th are mentioned in last pages and the addition and deletion are clearly mentioned.

At a glance by reading this book we can have a clear idea of what Hahnemann has changed in the various edition and what he emphasized more in each edition as per then existing condition of his personal experience in formulating the proper guidelines for Homoeopath to study and pursue Homoeopathy.

This book is very useful for the students as it has a quick reference of the meanings of various Latin and German words and appropriate understanding of Hahnemann’s idea of using those words and a quick reference in examination point of view also and for Practitioners also.

About Author:

Dr. Mahendra singh is very known for his treasure of Organon of Medicine and I heard from my Teachers that he has all original manuscripts of various editions of Organon. He did extreme work to give the accuracy for understanding Hahnemann’s idea of Homoeopathy in practice and Strictly abiding to the guidelines given by Master.

Now Dr.Subhas singh took all pain to make and publish the corrected edition of Organon with word meanings as continuity for the work of Dr. Mahendra Singh for enriching the Homoeopathy.

Homeopathic book Introduction of Materia Medica Reviewed by Prof. Shreepad Hegde

Materia Medica is written by Prof. Dr G. Nagendra Babu. Many of the books on homeopathic materia medica are compilations of symptoms produced by the drugs. Many materia medicas available now are aiming at understanding the drug pictures. Readers of homeopathic materia medica complain that different views of authors’ on different drug pictures create confusion in the minds of beginners of materia medica. During my 33 years of teaching in Homeopathic College I was not in a position to suggest any one book (which covers all the required portion) for the beginners and fresh teachers, now I am confident that Professor Nagendra Babu’s book will fulfill this lacuna. Author’s conscious attempt in keeping the language very simple is aimed at blooming students of materia medica. On going through the book one can understand the sincere efforts taken by author in compiling the data from different sources and presenting it in his own lucid style of writing. Chapters like history of materia medica, relationship of remedies, applied materia medica in learning and practice, group remedies in homeopathic materia medica will be useful to undergraduates as well as post graduate students. This book no doubt will make an addition to the text books on homeopathic materia medica. As the title suggests this book aptly named as an introductory preparation to homeopathic materia medica for beginners. As per the authors’ narrative the subject is based on the new curriculum introduced by the C.C.H standard regulations for the preliminary study. I hope that both the profession as well as students will welcome and utilize this book and be benefitted by the labors of Prof. Dr G. Nagendra Babu.

A book review of – Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy by Dr SK Tiwari by Dr Mansoor Ali

We have Lectures on Homoeopathic Philosophy by Kent, Principles and Art of cure by HA Robert, The Genius of Homoeopathy by Stuart Close as guide book on principles of Homoeopathy but no book on Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy by Boger. This book fills the lacunae. The author collected various lectures and articles by Boger and complied in the form of book for the prospects of homoeopathic education and practice.

In this book, several really intriguing cases are recreated and successfully handled by Boger. Reading those cured cases is incredibly enjoyable, and each case offers useful lessons.

This missionary labour was completed through a thorough and exhaustive study of all relevant literature referring to homoeopathy teaching and practise during the Boger era, as well as compilation of that literature (1890-1935).

This book only contains papers that were deemed to be extremely important and useful for students and practitioners.

This book, Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy, is a “collection” to “link” the dispersed useful notions considered by Boger, which defines the fundamentals and the methodology of logical and effective clinical practise of homoeopathy.

In the form of lectures, presentations, conversations with prominent contemporary thinkers and practitioners, case analyses, and recommendations by Boger at various times and circumstances on numerous platforms, these were laying unattended were included in this book.

Even though I have been trained in mainstream medicine and working as a psychiatrist, my interest in the holistic aspect of medical therapy has always been there right from my first year of MBBS.

What has ‘Homeopathy Through Harmony and Totality’ to offer to a Homeopath?

This homeopathic masterpiece of the second volume of “Harmony in Totality” by Dr Kulkarni is a magnificent guide towards the study of ‘Methods of Prescribing’ and ‘Homeopathic Materia medica’. The first volume was a compendium of philosophy, thoughts, discussions, instructions, basic ideas of dispositions and personality, the study of emotions and clinical tips to benefit our clinical practice.

The first time I received the new two PDF files of the “Harmony in Totality” volumes for a pre-publishing reading, I was eager to read them. It has been more than 18 years that I have been working withDr Kulkarni’swritings and I have collected hundreds of hours of listening, discussing and debating with this sincere homeopathic master. But now, having these precious words and knowledge written in front of me, wait for reading, rereading and restudying, I was curious. “You have no time to waste Guy, get into the study mode!”- I heard my voice.

WithDr Kulkarni’s“Absolute Materia Medica”, we had a dive into a different way of approaching the study of remedies: a build of a structure, in which every single symptom is connected to the whole picture and no symptom remains disconnected. This Materia medica builds a matrix that exhibits a remedy in 3D and allows us to understand the remedy from different angles and all through explanations of the interdependency. I would say ‘Absolute Materia Medica’ is a wonderful opportunity to get into the minds of Dr Tarkas and Dr Kulkarni and hence increasing our understanding of homeopathic remedies and thus our work in practice.

LAWS OF NATURE

We all know everything is connected! We all share a holistic view and a deep understanding that Dr Hahnemann’s genius discovery was and still, the biggest contribution in Medicine yet. Our great teacher, Dr Hahnemann made it clear through his writings that the most important principle amongst the Laws of nature he applies in his new method is “Totality of Symptoms”, which was first introduced in paragraph 2. This principle is no other than the holistic principle of existence, and Dr Kulkarni is clearly guided by it in his path.

Now we have three new insightful volumes of “Harmony in TotalityMajor writings of Dr Kulkarni” which keep paving the path back to the classical approach to homeopathy.

ARYA NAGARJUNA

The famous Indian philosopher, Ven. Arya Nagarjuna, who dealt with the holistic view from the human perspective, explained in his canonical book “Mula Madhyamika Karika”:

“Whatever is dependently co-arisen That is explained to be emptiness. That, being a dependent designation, Is itself the middle way”.

In this phrase, Nagarjuna explains that there is nothing that exists without a cause and without a clear dependence on another thing, that is to say, everything, every phenomenon is empty of self and by definition, depends on it’s causes.

Dr Kulkarni’s teaching reflects the same. No mind or organs exist separately, no separation, no dualism, no different diseases in one patient or one remedy. Every symptom, every phenomenon is dependent on the other symptoms in the one and whole picture. There are no different entities in the one- Just one continuous motion. Everything is connected and every symptom has its causation and resulting symptoms. This is Kulkarni’s ‘Monogram’.

CORNUCOPIA

This cornucopia is not only about data collection but also about data processing and deeper study of homeopathy. Contemplation of the contents of Vol II indicates how deeply the author has delved into his favourite subject of Materia medica which has been presented through Monogram, Group study and Individual remedies.

An instant look at Tarkas-Kulkarni Materia medica may seem as an ordinary desktop guide, but a thorough study of it brings us to a totally different level of understanding. Our precious repertoire of remedies reveals the glory of Hahnemann: The Materia medica as a collection of various Law-of-nature appearances.

This new volume of “Harmony in Totality” can be referred as a guidebook to Dr Kulkarni’s understanding of the homeopathic Materia medica, or as a display window to the “Absolute Materia Medica”.

I was fortunate to enjoy hundreds of hours of discussion withDr. Ajit Kulkarniabout the scientific aspects of homeopathic principles and holistic existence of phenomena. We discussed homeopathy through the eyes of various philosophies and Ajit’s amazing gift to grasp the whole picture of a given remedy, its processes and order is unique to our generation and shown well in his teachings.

UNIQUE WAY OF WRITING

Dr Kulkarni searches for the individual appearance of each symptom in every single remedy or group of remedies and its phase of existence comparing to its cause and effect.

‘Mind and Above’ addresses the mysterious mind to be unfolded through the study of dispositional characters of Human beings and Emotions. The author has rendered a unique way to study basic emotions interwoven wonderfully with Materia medica, repertory and illustrative cases.

Here is an example from the practical section: One might search for the straight symptom in the repertory when his patient exposes his “Prudence” or “Disgust” in the clinic. A deep study in the chapter about “Conscience” will open a new thought. What are those feelings? What is the flow that precedes the disgust and what follows it? Do these feelings stand on their own?

The same analogy holds true for Anger. This expression is much deeper than a flat symptom that contains some dozens or hundreds of remedies. To find the right remedy, we have to understand anger in its various aspects so we can exclude remedies that do list under it in the repertory but have no resemblance to the origination and manifestation showed in a patient. This is well explained in the book, aside from some examples of concomitant symptoms of ‘Anger’ in various remedies.

Each specimen is a Master piece and I am sure every reader will get ample knowledge of practical value.

The second part is all about the beauty of Homeopathic Materia medica. Dr Kulkarni’s exposition is deep and wide and brings forth many ideas, concepts, clinical tips and instructions.

In sub-part I, Dr Kulkarni begins with the magnificent Monogram, which is the DNA of every remedy, the codes which describe the mode of action (MoA) of the remedies, the natural way of actuality of the remedies. I find the monogram as the most important contribution to the study of remedies of our generation. This method brings homeopathy back to the talk with science, nature and art.

Sub-part II contains 10 lectures of out-of-the-box thinking and analyzing of some of our polycrests and some smaller remedies’ personalities and their modus operandi.

Sub-part III is all about families and groups. As a follower of the great Dr E. Farrington, I am fortunate to study Dr Kulkarni’s teachings. The resemblance between the wide perspective of the two, cannot be overlooked. As far as I understand Dr Kulkarni’s new book, it is just a short glimpse into one of the most important works in our profession- the big “How” of Materia medica study.

Homeopathy in the 21st century is going through both positive and harmful changes. More and more methods are born, invented or established while basic Laws of cure are sided or ignored. The combination of Art and Science is fading away with the blindness and dazzle caused by the distortion of the Art. Each and every one of us, the standard-bearers of Homeopathy must not forget that the only way to utilize the Art is by having a good and sound science, free of assumptions and empty theories, speculations and subjective views that have not been proven.

This book stands true to its name: “(understanding the) Harmony in Totality”.

A book like “Harmony in Totality” is a Gemstone of simplicity and sincerity which I consider as a “Must ponder and apply book”. It doesn’t matter whether your daily work with Kulkarni’s “Absolute Materia Medica”, Kent’s, Farrington’s, Hahnemann’s Pura or any other Materia medica, reading Dr Kulkarni’s approach will surely benefit your study and practice.

Going Back to The Roots- Revisiting The Fundamentals of Homoeopathy

The book, “Going Back to The Roots”, has taken the author back to where she comes from, to find solace and to find out where we really belong. This journey was very important for the author to share. After taking a lecture for students of ninth and tenth standard of Gundecha Education Academy as a part of Career Guidance Programme where she explained them the powers and benefits of Homoeopathy, the one question that put them off was- How much will we earn if we take up Homoeopathy as a profession? This book Essentials of Boger’s Principle and Practice of Homoeopathy is a ‘collection’ to ‘connect’ the scattered valuable concepts deliberated by Boger which delineates the principles and the methodology of rational and successful clinical practice of Homoeopathy. Dr. Murphy was one of the earliest seminar teachers and is responsible for introducing many people to homeopathy. He takes a practical approach to homeopathic education, bringing clarity to the interrelation between philosophy, materia medica, and repertory work.

The book “case analysis and prescribing techniques,” however is very thoughtfully produced with conceptual understanding of “glimpses of every day practices”. The book is up to date and carefully elaborated to meet the requirements of the profession.

The author has been successful in his effort to correlate Clinical Aspect that is morbid physiology and therapeutic aspects of disease and throughout the book emphasized the necessity of recognizing, which many physicians fail to acquire the simple arts of “seeing,” “hearing,” “feeling,” “listening,” and “communicating.”

The book is more anecdotal and conceptual than theoretical, emphasizing the constitutional disposition that makes individuals more or less susceptible to disease. Patients with comparable similar symptoms suffer quite differently, and these issues require distinct analysis, most of us commonly fail to differentiate between variations, in chapter Homeopathic case-taking with the example of anxiety and fear he explains how to identify patterns of symptoms and signs to achieve an appropriate differential diagnosis. The pattern is seen crucial in identifying the underlying disorder, and in the chapter etiologies he has mentioned appropriate information on the cause of the condition and its expected course and treatment. It’s extraordinarily useful.

The hype around this book has been unquestionable Focusing on the character of the illness and the importance of the physician’s ability to listen, to understand the patient’s interpretations and attributions, and to convey empathy meaningfully and be helpful. Murphy not only brings to this task considerable experience as physician but also as an expert in homeopathic medicine, which allows him to convey brilliantly the variability in Homeopathy with assigned meaning and goals. This art, is neglected and undervalued by many young physicians, which is a central aspect of effective care and management. Murphy’s book tells us, that every patient has a story and that illness has its distinct meaning systems that guide the patient’s reactions to treatment. Therefore, this book makes clear that medicine is a social institution shaped by our philosophical predispositions, our history, and our present needs. Our demography is changing significantly, posing new and future challenges in long-term care and the management of chronic disease and disability. As we confront new challenges, whether in response to acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) or other new agents, or in handling people on drugs. With Prescribing techniques and appreciation that medicine exists to serve human purposes. It is only by carefully distinguishing between means and ends that we can successfully shape our medical futures. Most of the evidence Murphy gives us is anecdotal, the style is conversational, which is my favorite kind to read. I don’t think there’s anyone who wouldn’t benefit from reading this book.

The book, “A clinical repertory to the dictionary of material medica” authored by J.H.Clarke is a book which is divided into 5 parts. Starting with list of remedies with abbreviations it becomes handy to search for the drug .

Part I consist of two things first introduction to clinical repertories where he mentions about the use of the book and secondly it consist of clinical repertory which have various clinical rubrics with their medicines are given in this part.

Part II consists of Prefatory note to repertory of causation and repertory of causation. Symptoms are made better or bad by cold, heat, rest, motion by day by night etc many remedies are related to the effects of certain conditions, causation and aggravations are not same they are closely allied such type of relationship for eg Arnica removed morbid condition caused by falls and Ruta relieves the effect of bruised bones such type of relations are arranged under a separate heading in the dictionary. The name of the few remedies have been added which do not occur in the Dictionary of Materia Medica.

Part III comprises of Temperaments, disposition, constitutions and states in this part remedies which have been found to act most favourable in certain types of person, temperaments, sex ,age are mentioned.

Part IV consists of Prefatory Note to Clinical relationships. In this chapter there is tabular representation of all remedies of the materia medica. They are included under the following headings: complementary remedies, remedy follows well, remedy is followed well by, compatible remedies, incompatible remedies, remedy antidotes, remedy is antidote by, duration of action of remedies.

Part V consisits of introduction to repertory of natural relationships. The chapter shows remedies belonging to the different kingdoms of nature arranged in the order of their natural kinship.

Repertory of natural relationships in that it have ELEMENTS which have 3 parts alphabetical list according to atomic weight, mendeleeff’s groups.

Vegetable kingdom which have alphabetical list of natural orders and systemic arrangement of natural orders.

Animal kingdom it have alphabetical list of natural orders. Systematic arrangement of natural orders.

Sarcodes: there is a list of sarcodes, along with it there is list of supplementary list of remedies derived from altered tissues and secretions as Urea and Uric acid etc.

The chapter ends with Nosodes which are remedies made up from morbid tisses and secretions containing the specific virus of diseases.

In short the book contains the tools for reaching towards the remedy in a short and easy way.
