Have another headcanon— this one is much more speculative. What if Nymm and Trobbio perforned together before Nymm became Brumm?

Nymm is an incrdibly mysterious character. Formerly known as Brumm, his memories were masked whenhe joined the Grimm Troupe then stripped away along with his memories as Brumm once he leaves it. He expresses his confusion when you talk to him or dreamnail him, but although his lack of knowledge nags at him, he surveys his situation and takes initiative. He plays his accordion.

It seems to be such an instinctual thing. That he remembers how to play it and chooses to do so for this gloomy village feels very telling. Add his friendly personality to the mix and we have the best example of a traditional bard in the game. But, what was his past like? How long ago did he join the Troupe? Are people he once knew still alive?

This is highly speculative, but bear with me. With Silksong and its cast of characters on the way, a certain showman came to mind while I was thinking about this. A bug with a similar flare for the arts. A bug with a similar red shawl.

Do their similarities mean this for sure? No. Is it fun? Yes. For me, absolutely. It's interesting to imagine their dynamic— Trobbio being the more outspoken, dramatic, fashionista performer and Nymm as the more calm, introverted, peacemaking member of the band. Maybe they were friends? Maybe their differences drove them apart? Maybe Trobbio became antagonistic at some point and led to Nymm leaving for a better, black and red troupe? The POSSIBILITIES.

I'm probably one of the, like 10 people in the Hollow knight fandom that doesn't really care about Grimm, and lately, I have been thinking that maybe that is because my own ideas and headcanons about the entire troupe are different from what most of the fandom seems to accept.

lemme explain how I see them and how my personal headcanon goes.

A bit longer than my normal posts, so I put it under the thingy, lol.

The OG Grimm was a simple circus/troupe leader who, in one of his travels discovered the nightmare hearth, an incorporeal higher being that promised him immortality in exchange for becoming a vessel of him, and because immortality seems cool, OG Grimm accepted.

This started the nightmare heart ritual (like the one in the game). Grimm's immortality requires him to be reborn (because a mortal body without a proper ascension to godhood cant properly manage immorality), and even though the old Grimms personality/memories are transferred to each new Grimm vessel, they eventually start to fade away with every new Grimm. Basically, all past personalities start to get diluted, with the current one having the most control over their body.

The nightmare heart meanwhile gets to inhabit their vessel body, getting control of their dream counterpart (NKG). Grimm and NKG are then 2 different beings, that's why Grimms bows to you while NKG doesn't (NKG/ the nightmare heart is a huge jerk btw...)

The nightmare heart's long-term goal is to get Grimm to perform the ritual enough times for all Grimm's personalities to get diluted enough for the NH to get full control over Grimm's body.

Nymm/Brumm personally knew one of those old Grimms and that's why he joined the troupe (btw, members of the troupe don't really become immortal, but get special abilities and get to live longer because of nightmare magic or something)

That's why Brumm wants to end the ritual. The Grimm that he knew is just barely present in the current Grimm, and he wants the whole troupe to leave the heart, forget about immortality and mystical powers, become normal mortals, and live the rest of their lives in peace.

Haven't played the game in a long time, but these are my headcanons.

So I don't know who you like from hollow knight, but everybody likes grimm so do him for the ask game thing

Oh, good old Grimm!

Favorite thing about him: I think my favorite thing has to be his story. An itinerant circus traveling to fallen kingdoms in order to eat the remaining power there? That's cool as fuck.

Least favorite thing: honestly, his fetch quest. It is really uninteresting, and I feel like there could have been better things to do instead of "go here, kill this guy, flame" times 10.

BrOTP: the thing is, I don't really care about ships in Hollow Knight, but it is easily the white King. I think they talk shit about each other constantly and they're best friends because that's funny to me.

OTP: I guess God tuner? He's happy to make a show for them, so it could be a cute dynamic. I don't really care about it though.

NOTP: I don't like people trying to put him with the Knight, but it's more because I think the knight shouldn't be with someone than their incompatibility.

Random headcannon: He's the one who plays the organ just like Nymm is the one playing the accordion.

Unpopular opinion: Nightmare King Grimm is really not that hard??? It took me like a dozen of tries until I beat him.

How do you interpret characters in Hollowknight who's species arent defined in canon? Like Quirrel, Tiso, even Lace in silksong? Lots of characters have fanon-acceptable species claims, but I wanna know how you see them!!

hmmm thats a good question!

Quirrel i see as a isopod of sorts for obvious reasons. look at that guy hes so rolly polly. also tiso as an ant or something, I'm having a hard time finding others that he could possibly be.

idk if brumm/nymm's species has been defined but i see him as like a woolly chafer. beetle. and emilitia as one of those 4 horned rhino beetles because.

i once saw someone refer to Soul Master as a cicada and i see it, as well as with the volt twisters, soul warriors, etc.

as for lace? im not really sure. she could be a mix of multiple bugs (like grimm imo) but i really dont know. cant find anything that matches to me. lurien is a mystery to me as well but i love seeing all the fanart of him as all the different species

Hallownest goes through waves/eras of Higher Beings

The first wave/era of Higher Beings was the Shade Lord

Second wave/era were Radiance, Grimm, and Unn

The White Lady came sometime after them, but is still considered second wave

Pale King marks the third wave/era

Events of the game are a fourth wave/era

The Nightmare and Dream Realms may have once been the same, but Grimm and the Radiance were always separate beings

Grimm’s control/shackles of The Ritual over the Troupe is akin to what the hivemind of the Radiance was over the moths/the Infection

Grimm controls the “Heart” of the subconscious -- the bound mortals must be willing and maintain full autonomy of mind/personality, but forget their past and all previous attachments (Brumm/Nymm)

The Radiance controls the “Mind” of the subconscious -- the bound mortals can be unwilling and lose all control of autonomy, but appear to maintain past memories

The denizens of the Fungal Wastes (barring the Mantises) were once worshippers/followers of Unn

They were cut off by the arrival of the White Lady, and later exacerbated by the Pale King, but now worship her

The White Lady is a semi-parasitic/harmful Higher Being, hence the thorns in her Gardens/the White Palace

The Fungal Wastes are another byproduct of her parasitism, being a toxic/noxious place, but with creatures that are capable of philosophizing/higher thought (Mister Mushroom, Fungal Core, etc.)

The Fog Canyon is a result of her and the Pale King’s equal influence over the land, being extremely dangerous (acid/electricity everywhere) but also the epicenter of the kingdom’s knowledge and philosophy

By the time of the Pale King, the Shade Lord is completely forgotten. However, some bugs worship the Void itself, still.

Tribes that have higher thoughts without the worship of a Higher Being used to worship the Shade Lord/Void, but no longer do (Mantids/Deep Nest/Hive)

They’re desperately sought after for conversion/destruction by newer, territorial gods

Hence the Pale King’s attempts at diplomacy/conquering, and the Radiance’s infecting these tribes

Active worship is marked by Void stains on their face/body, and eventual blindness/death by Void poisoning (No Eyes, Traitor’s Child, Snail Shamans, etc.)

Hallownest tends to lean matriarchal with its High Beings and societal structures

3 of the 5 gendered deities are female (Unn, White Lady, Radiance)

Most tribes/peoples are matriarch led (Moths, Mantids, Deep Nest, the Hive, Flukes, etc.)

Even male-led peoples have maternal traits (Grubfather, Elderbug, etc.)

That the third wave/current Hallownest is patriarchal/led by the Pale Kins and is an anomaly

Some of the non-converted peoples see this as an abomination, hence refusal to worship or actively seeking destruction

The Grimm Troupe/Nightmare Heart is technically also genderless

Having tied itself to a mortal vessel, it does take on the gender of its current iteration

The Troupe Master/Grimmchild can vary in gender

Do all these head cannons align with lore? Don’t really know. But I like em, and I hope y’all do too!
