My latest read from the library. I enjoyed it, but while being a fan of golden age Hollywood meant that I got all the references (including the sly Hail, Caesar nod) I also saw the twists coming.

...I was also critiquing things like "would this really have been Errol Flynn's star image in 1944?" so this may prove that I am just on the wrong side of the "insufferably into old movies" spectrum to be this book's target audience.

#also: would errol flynn ever have been the most sober member of a friend group? ever? #windhall #ava barry #it was fun don't get me wrong #i just kept nitpicking #if the protagonist is as seriously broke as he appears to be why is he drinking macallan? #...yes i am also Like That about scotch #book covers #cover design #wait i'm not done: am i supposed to believe that anyone would meet errol flynn and not have SOME internal reaction #to the charisma or the charm or the good looks and/or the dangerous reputation? #to none of it? All Of That shows up and offers the narrator his hip flask and the narrator is... mildly interested? #no man is THAT straight surely #also the narrator later turns out to be an activist (ish) for women's rights #in which case #he never socked flynn in the jaw/gave him the dirtiest side-eye known to man/made a snarky comment? #maybe my conclusion is: one does not simply make errol flynn a background character #queue

So…Eddie in a kilt y/y? He’d love having the sporran to keep his dice/miniatures/weed in, pretending he’s a highlander with the knife in his sock. I don’t think he’d have a ‘great kilt’ he’d get too wrapped up in all the fabric. He’d definitely just wear it with band T-shirts but would have a bonnie Prince Charlie shirt for when he’s feeling fancy.

Of course Steve goes silent and just stares the first time he sees Eddie casually in a kilt as he’s head banging with his guitar at band practice when he comes to pick up Dustin. (Dustin had begged Eddie to come to practice and once he got the all clear from the rest of the band Dustin was a semi regular in Gareth’s garage)

7. go to a wedding with, go to a party with, go to a museum with

Oh my. I... hmmm... okay. We got this. I got this.

It pains me to say this, but having seen the pictures of Pato at his sister's wedding... no. This is not happening. Just. No. And can you imagine Rossi in a room full of people he doesn't know, trying to make small talk? Neither can I. Josef it is. He's tall, he's blond, he's athletic — arm candy paradise.

I was tempted to write Pato out of the party option as well after the Vegas debacle, but, to be fair, Elba dressed for him that weekend. As long as he promises to not wear the Versace, we're partying. And by partying, I mean he's taking me to all his favourite places to eat first.

Which leaves going to a museum with Alex, and I'm not gonna lie, I'm a little worried he'll take it too seriously. Don't judge me if I bring a hip flask of bourbon to deal with it.
