GEP-XJB 3″

So I saw UAVFutures do a review of the HGLRC XJB quad not too long ago and he was mightly impressed. So when I saw this whole stack on sale for black friday (though I think it just coincided with black friday, the deal is still up and for quite a few more days), I figured I could probably build something similar to that quad. And also, I’ve been wanting to do a nimble 3″ build for some time.

I’ve also had my eyes on doing an indoor quad build but that’ll have to be for later. My E010S custom build will have to do :)

Anyway, so the build; https://rotorbuilds.com/build/8516 So we have the FC, ESC 4-in-1 + PDB, VTX, Camera all in one package. The HGLRC XJB F428 TX20 ELF All-in-one 20x20 tower. That’s a mouthful. So I just scouted for a 3″ frame that was fairly well known and had 20x20 mounting holes. In 20x20 hindisight, the GEPRC Sparrow might have been a bad deal... we’ll see. The stack might not fit inside of it. Looking at other rotorbuilds with that frame they’re only 2 boards stacked and really tight in there. So we’ll see. I might have to get another frame and use the gep rc for something else.

So why this stack? It ticked many boxes, not all of my wish-list boxes but many. It’s an F4 board, so it’s part of the new line in that regard. Should be able to keep the gyro and acc. refreshrates fairly high without overloading the cpu.

Next it has Betaflight OSD. I’ve been wanting to have a build with OSD for some time now. And pair that with possibility of a VBAT sensor I will be able to see the remaining voltage and not just rely on the radio telemetry readouts. Also with the betaflight OSD I can adjust PIDs from the radio. On-the-fly tuning. No longer have to land, go get quad, plug it in to the computer, connect in betaflight and adjust pids, save, disconnect and fly again to see how it handles. It’ll save some time configuring this thing. Also allowing increase of I-gain when flying in windy areas.

It has 16MB blackbox memory. Good enough when it doesnt have SD-card for it.

IBUS/SBUS support.

The ESC/PDB connector to the FC is “built-in”. So no extra wires there. Just solder up the motors to the ESC and the battery connector and you’re almost done. The VTX needs soldering and camera as well. THEN we’re done. I think. MPU6000 Gyro which is not too sensitive which means I shouldn’t in theory need to soft-mount it, but I might do so anyway. Next the VTX is switchable (however not with smart audio :/ ) And with a stated 0 mW i.e. pit-mode it’s great for changing channels without interfering other pilots during races.

28Amp ESC:s it can hold it’s own very well. Peak 35A. I figured it should be more than enough for what kind of power a 3″ quad will ever need. the GEP RC motors top Amp draw according to the charts is close to 20Amps.

So what other special things do we have? Well the receiver has to be connected. Got a R-XSR based on joshua bardwells reviews and testing, and also a Taranis QX7. Will have to mod it when I get it as it comes with Mode 2 and I’ve been flying with Mode 1. So that’s one thing that i have to fix as soon as I get it.

Oh and since I want this to be a neat build, I’ll have to go out and buy some wire mesh. I have some shrink wrap to make it even neater. Next I want to upgrade the whip antenna that comes with the cube with an Axii stubyy or something similar. I believe it’s a IPX/U.FL connector on the VTX (official docs just say IPEX).

Then I got the GEP RC motors that fits the frame, and props that fit the motors, also GEP RC. So basically, with a 4S at full throttle, this little quad will have more than double the thrust of my wizard x220 at half the weight.... this will be interesting once it’s done.

Next I want to secure all of the components as much as possible from water, so I’ve got some dielectric spray from Elfa.se so it shouldn’t be so sensitive to moisture/rain. Maybe I’ll manage to get it IP27 classified?

This will be a monster, so I’ll try first with my existing 3S batteries I’ve used for my wizard. Later I’ll get 850mAh 4S batteries for it.

So since I ordered these during black-friday and have 10-28 WORKINGdays of waiting ahead of myself, I guess it will be a while before I can actually make the build progress here.

And as UAVfutures had issues with the name HGLRC XJB quad, I guess GEP XJB is a bad name too ;) I will name this build later, but first I have to get a feel for it and see what it looks like in my hands. Maybe I’ll name it chihuahua; A lot of bark in a small dog...quad.
