STEVEN AU(-ish)NIVERSE IDEA, maybe - GEM SURVIVORS OF THE WAR

so I’ve come across those Steven Universe AUs where he’s the other diamonds’ son, some p gnarly AU where the diamonds are legit fused together and seen tons of cool gemsonas…

but has anyone ever made an AU-ish idea based on the perspective(s) of a gem(s) that went rogue from Homeworld during the Gem War but didn’t necessarily join the Crystal Gems?

or maybe they were persuaded to go renegade because of their own beliefs being different from Homeworld and saw the rebellion as a good time to ditch the diamonds’ dictatorship hierarchy to be themselves… but were inevitably pulled into the war for a collection of different reasons.

Because I’ve been thinking about this perspective shift a lot.

Like, yeah, I know. The only gems that survived were because they either hadn’t emerged yet, was bubbled away somewhere, or protected behind Rose’s shield.

But this is where the AU-ish part comes in! Some gems did survive the war without being corrupted, but now they’re all on their own or the aftermath of the rebellion wasn’t at all what they thought it would be like, so now they’re left in a world they fought to be free on but aren’t living the life they thought they would. They’re alone, going through the years with their guilt, or they’re a small group of renegades or cutoff Crystal Gems that banded together to build some semblance of a better life like Rose promised.

I’ve got these two gemsonas that I’m fleshing out, and I’m hardcore deep thinking their back stories and designs and stuff!

I’m super excited about this so much that I might write it out. And I’m practicing drawing more to really flesh my idea out.

STEVEN UNIVERSE AU: GEM SURVIVORS- INTRODUCTION

Hauyne

BACKGROUND:

Hauyne are technically gems from Era One. However, the Hauyne caste no longer exists as of present time, because they have been classified as defect, unsalvageable, and not worth their grain in material to be made. Hauyne gems were supposed to be similar to Lapis Lazuli gems in terms of being able to terraform planets with their hydrokinetic abilities, but unfortunately, the minerals to create Hauyne gems weren’t reliable enough to be used and the results were… less than pleasant.

There were a few Hauyne gems that properly formed for passable by human standards, but the caste as a whole was deemed a failure. A lot of Hauyne gems popped out too early, being stolen of the time they needed for proper growth. Several didn’t finish growing a proper gem to sustain their bodies so when they formed the results were obvious: twinning happened with a good few of the gems (which immediately caused a mixed behavior of disgust, horror, and aggression), some Hauynes were too weak to even hold their form properly (their gems too brittle to sustain any kind of physicality before causing the gem to crack, resulting in either the Hauyne to be poofed or the gem shattering on its own), a few gems could barely form at all, let alone a sustainable body riddled with flaws and defects.

There were a few Hauynes that incubated and formed after a normal length time in the ground, but they still resulted in a few issues as well. Some couldn’t speak or see, some didn’t have the standard height of what they were expected to have, and the worst cases being unable to perform their duties which they were made for. The idea of giving enhancers to the passable gems was discussed, and the rest of the gems would just be shattered. Eventually, the Diamonds decided of ridding Homeworld of all Hauynes as they fell too far below standard to waste any dwindling resources on.

The result of such poor gems being made was from a lack of proper minerals, poor placement, and too many Hauynes were being produced at once. Lapis Lazuli gems are rare because of the limited conditions they have to go through to be made. The idea with the Hauyne caste was they would be lower in quality but would suffice the difference in quantity. That didn’t turn out to be the case, and the lot of Hauynes were made only to be discarded as failures and shattered, with the Diamonds concluding that Lapis Lazuli gems will work out just fine as the only terraforming gems.

If the Hauynes caste had survived they would have been under Blue and Yellow’s rule, not courts, as they would be too standard as a working class gem alongside quartz soldiers and mechanic-like gems such as Peridots.

Although a few did escape before mass shattering into the caverns of Homeworld, living as off colors. Who knows what happened to the others?

Her control over water is significantly weaker than a Lapis Lazuli abilities but she feels uncomfortable without water nearby, claiming she feels a piece of her is missing. She also uses her water to see her area and form a concept of what things look like.

Favorable quote: I used to be so mad and resentful towards the Diamonds, for how they treated us– judged us, just after emerging. I was confused, because I didn’t understand why I was so scared about being shattered. I wanted to stay whole, even though I couldn’t do the one thing was I made to do. A few of us escaped and hid in the underground tunnels… but every day was terrifying because we never knew when we would be found out. Every day on Homeworld for me… was hell.
