Learning how to tell them apart! Interesting! ❤️ 🔸 🌿 🔸 ❤️ #waterlandyou #repost #reposting @honeygirlgrows Male or female? How can you tell: Males have spots under the top set of wings, visible only when the butterfly is fully opened. 🎯🎯These oval-shaped scent pads along the inside vein of each hind wing produce pheromones to attract female monarch butterflies. Males also have a distinctive set of clasper feet on the end of the abdomen to help hold the female while mating. To activate these pheromones, newly-hatched males must first sip salts and minerals, typically from mud puddles, an action called, “muddling.” You can create a muddling puddle yourself, simply. Mix soil, compost, or manure, and salt or sand in a container, moistened with water or beer (yes beer, it has essential minerals in it - why they give it to new mothers after delivery in the hospital in Germany! 🍻). I recommend a shallow container with drainage, an oval terracotta pot works well, too. And you can expect to attract more than monarch butterflies to your #MuddlingPuddle . Learn something? Leave me a, “🦋.” Grateful to these new monarchs for modeling for me on this gorgeous sunflower.🌻🌻🌻Just saw my arrow is covering the “M,” and if you noticed my typos in comments or stories - it’s official, my eyesight is going🤦‍♀️🤓👵🏼. P.S. I’m leading corporate workshops on attracting and raising Monarch butterflies this month and next, and another on Scent-Free Composting. Have your company contact me to book any workshop on gardening, or pollinators. Happy gardening! . #HGG🦋 #HoneyGirlGrows #MonarchButterflies #Monarchs #Pollinators #PollinatorGardening #PollinatorGarden #RaisingMonarchs #ButterflyGram #EndangeredSpecies #EndangeredButterfly #GardenChat #GardenTips #ButterflyGarden #ButterflyGardening #ButterflyFacts https://www.instagram.com/p/CTfxDHvsPxn/?utm_medium=tumblr

This is so interesting! Monarch! ❤️ 🔸 🐛 🔸 ❤️ #waterlandyou #repost #reposting @honeygirlgrows 🐛🐛🐛The first thing a monarch caterpillar eats after birth? Its eggshell. 🥚The eating party is pretty nonstop from then on, and in two short weeks each caterpillar devours an entire plant before chrysalis. These distinct stages prior are called “instars”, and between each they’ll outgrow their outer cuticle/skin (like pants that become too tight), and need to sheds it for a new caterpillar suit big enough to grow into. After molting their skin, they’ll often even eat that, too 🐽. I’m frequently asked, “Why are my caterpillars crawling away from my plants, are they lost?” During molts between instar s, monarch caterpillars often seek out different textures - and will crawl up to 40’ away to chrysalis 🚸⚠️Warning, “Caterpillars Crossing” is literally painted on the ground in my corporate habitat garden projects where we raise thousands. 😁 During their 2 week-life as a caterpillars, monarchs grow 2,000 x their size, and almost 3,000 x in weight in just 9-14 days. Leave a “🐛” if you learned something. Want to learn more about these creatures? Ask your company to host an outdoor lunch and learn with me. 🌿. . . #HGG🦋#HoneyGirlGrows #Butterfly #MonarchButterfly #ButterflyFacts #Pollinators #🦋 #PollinatorGarden #ButterflyGarden #HabitatGarden #MonarchButterfly #Caterpillar #ButterflyGram #ButterflyPlant #Pollinator #ButterfliesOfInstagram #NonGMO #Organic #OrganicGarden #PesticideFree #UrbanGarden #GrowYourOwn #GYO #ButterflyRaising #BackyardGardener #GardenChat #InsectsOfInstagram https://www.instagram.com/p/CSyDc0AsEs6/?utm_medium=tumblr
