Headcanon as to why the UK bros can all use magic despite it heing a very unusual trait among nation people: the Arthurian legends are true. Albion is still the land where the Once and Future King sleeps, waiting to be awoken at the end of the world. So, even if the people themselves have forgotten the old religion and the magic they once knew, their national personifications will never lose their connection to it.
Also Merlin* is still alive, still the greatest wizard to ever live, and still a total troll. Personal headcanon that a nation always knows where all their people are and can find them if they want to, but Merlin is the exception. He wanders around Britain, in and out of the fae realm, and gives the fab four the slip. Wales can sometimes get close (being the land of Myrddin’s birth) but even his gaze can’t hold the wizard for long. No one finds Merlin unless Merlin wants them to. Very frustrating for a nation to have one of their people do that, but it’s Merlin so deal wit it
Speaking of Merlin, he’s the one who gave England his human name. Third headcanon that nations are given their human names by their greatest residents. The other UK bros were named by different people, but Merlin gave England his king’s name. Which makes England one of the only nations to be named after someone. Hundreds of years later and he still can’t decide if it’s something to be proud of or just embarrassing
(*I’m 100% picturing BBC’s Merlin btw because that version = *chef’s kiss* And he has the perfect trolly nature for this stuff too)

What happens to personifications of countries that stop existing, or merge with others? Did say, the Republic of Texas die off once the US annexed it?
That's actually a very good question! I hadn't thought about that before. I was so worried with discovering how nations are born that I didn't thought on how they die. I didn't even thought that they could die, since they're immortal!
I wasn't able to find a good answer with what I had available. So, in order to gain as much information as possible, I had to turn to asking people with more experience than me to answer our questions. Again, I know it's not the safest way, but... I guess, if I don't take some risks, I won't be able to reach some important stuff.
Apparently, there are these professionals... "nationologist" (I think that's how you write it), who specifically study about the nations. It is said they are people who work exclusively to the government, in order to understand how a personification can affect the land, or the other way around. For example, if a nation gets sick, that means that the country will go/is going through a economic crises. It's actually pretty useful, if you think about it. Some good predictions you could make there, huh?
Since I found out about the nationologists, I searched for one and it wasn't that difficult to find! It was a man who I saw out of the corner of my eye one time or another, but we never got to interact face to face. I used to question what the hell he was doing there if he wasn't apparently doing anything important. It turns out he was. Studying nations, just like I am right now.
Does this make me a nationologist..? Oh well, that's unimportant now.
I asked some things to him, saying that I just wanted to understand better with "what" I was working with. He seemed to be a very serious person, but actually was kind enough to answer a couple of questions, which was better than nothing.
First, I had asked about the "death of nations" and how it worked, since this is the main topic of the question anon made. The man answered that nations die the same way they are born: human belief. He explained that a nation is born from the moment that people believe that they belong to a certain country — I actually explained that in my first ask, but perhaps not as well explained as his. So, more than anything, this first part is a confirmation of what we believed to be true. He also said that the belief of a nation is very complex and relative, a single person believing that they belong to a country that doesn't exist at all wouldn't be enough for that nation to be born. There has to be a ton of people who strongly believe that they belong to a certain nationality, to the point that they can set an independent political and economic system. After all, these two factors are the main ones to sustain a personification's life. So it's no surprise that a nation is only... well, a nation, from the moment these two things are settled.
The same way, a nation dies when the country is falling apart, and the people start to believe they don't belong there anymore. I told him about the Republic of Texas, and he explained that Texas was a young-looking personification, since it didn't last very long. The personification started to "die" way after the annexation. Its former people viewed themselves now belonging to "United States", not "Texas" — and that was what really killed it, not the annexation itself. And many years later, the personification, having its nationalism completely forgotten, disappeared.
He also mentioned other two examples of the same case, both in US: the Kingdom of Hawaii and the Confederate States of America. The Kingdom of Hawaii is quite old, considering how long it has lasted. Now, the Confederate States is really young, after all, it had existed for literally four years. If anything, its nation would've looked like a child, or a pre-teen (it's pretty strange to imagine a child fighting in a war, to be pretty honest). And even so, both had the same end, which all of us know. The personifications disappeared after their people became "Americans".
Well, with all that discussion, at least we got the answers for both this and the previous question.
The man got suspicious on why I would need to know how a nation dies, so I had to ask him something else. I asked him how are nations born — if they are born from humans, another nation, or if they are generated by Earth itself. He said that nations can be born from both humans and other nations, however, it has never been seen how it happens. It's just stated that, if human women are pregnant with a nation, the chances of them dying while giving birth are 99,80%. Why it happens is a mystery. On the other hand, we have nations who gave birth to other nations. For example, we can be sure the Roman Empire had lots of descendents... like Italy, Spain, France, and many other nations which came from it. But it's said that the personification of Italy itself declared that the personification of the Roman Empire was its "grandpa", or something like that. Which makes me wonder who are Italy's parents. Even that is unknown.
Knowing all of that was making my mind blow, honestly. I was really getting interested in learning more about nations, and acted a little impulsive. I probably made more questions than I should, so many that the man must've started to think I'm crazy. But it was just when I asked "Why the nations are hidden from the public" that he dismissed me out of hand, saying that "There are things that someone in your position shouldn't know about", perhaps referring to my job. I decided it was best to leave, unfortunately, noticing there's no chance he's going to be an ally.
That's why I didn't talk to someone else about this before. I didn't want to arouse suspicion. And I almost failed miserably now.
I'm going to be more cautious next time. If a "next time" will be needed, at least.

Rights lads I'm here on my bullshit (as usual) because I've come up with an absolutely ludicrous theory- but a really sweet one. So, the story goes:
(added a keep reading cause it's not exactly SHORT)
I was drawing templar as part of one of my drawings for the upcoming historical hetalia week (first event I'm putting actual effort into! Can't wait to post those drawings :D) and my mind got stuck on the thing it always gets stuck on: his hair. Look at this boy's bangs!
Tumblr media
(Getting all the pictures I'm using from hetarchive btw)
They've always stuck out to me, for a reason I couldn't quite put my finger on. I mean, they're ridiculous (and I have, HAVE to wonder at the logistics of that. Like?? Is it a bird's nest?? Huh?? Does he CHOOSE to have a clump of hair on his forehead?? Has he even realised it's there??) and it's such a distinctive feature, too. I can't help but wonder if there's some significance behind them- though at the same time, perhaps Himaruya just thought it looked cool/suited him. Certainly, though, I always thought one thing about their shape, which filled me with a degree of fondness towards them: they look like a bird, minus the head. And it was as I thought about this similarity that an idea struck me.
Tumblr media
Gilbird. Prussia's bird companion, which he had not always noticed to be there. A fan favourite character, certainly whose origins are shrouded in mystery... Could there be some sort of connection between Templar and this beloved bird?
It's ridiculous, I know! That's part of the appeal to me. How would that even work? But at the same time, Templar's a certainly long-gone character, presumably having faded around the time of his order's dissolution (to my knowledge, there's not any canon info beyond the couple strips he appears in with Prussia- then Teuton), and the idea that- in some form or another- he stuck around as a companion to an old friend is really sweet to me, and I'd like to believe it to be true. But for that to be the case, he can't have appeared in any strips where Templar is clearly alive. So, I began to dig.
In the strip where Teuton and Templar talk about singing, there's a very close call, where Gilbird appears... but Templar suddenly vanishes from the comic. Here's one panel:
Tumblr media
Templar can clearly be seen, though Gilbird is nowhere in sight. However in the next panel...
Tumblr media
Gilbird appears, but Templar... disappears. My mind? Boggled. Clearly, just a second prior, Templar was present and Gillbird was not- but now the opposite is true! How can this be??
Can Templar shapeshift?
Going along with the idea that Templar IS Gilbird, it's a possibility. Of course, magic is a known fact in the Hetaliaverse, so this is not so beyond the realm of possibility as it may at first seem, though it certainly is shocking. But this was further confirmed as a possibility to me when I looked back at the last thing Templar says in his panel- an offer to sing together with Teuton. That certainly seems to be what is happening in the second panel.
(Of course, what Teuton says in the second panel could hint that it takes place a bit of time after the prior panel, giving time for Gilbird to show up. And Teuton does seem to be talking to Templar, which must mean he is simply out of panel... But Teuton's eyes are shut. Perhaps he has not noticed his friend disappear and be replaced by a bird, as he rarely seems to notice Gillbird in the first place.)
So, I was certain. There's no definitive evidence, just circumstantial, but it's a possibility, and one that I'd like to believe in.
OR IT WAS
Because upon taking another look at the panels before me, I saw my Anti-Christ D:
Tumblr media
THERE, ATOP TEUTON'S HEAD
Tumblr media
H E
Tumblr media
So yeah, all of this was for nothing!! But I choose to believe it anyway, because it's just the right amount of silly, sweet, and canon divergent! Also, it makes the the fics where Prussia's fading immortality kill Gilbird hurt even more!

So apparently there's this ancient region of these people called Prussians who were Baltic. But the Teutonic Knights came and made them assimilate to German culture. (Please correct me if I'm wrong)
So my question is...did the Prussia we know now kill someone and steal their name?
(Apologies if this has already been discussed, I'm new to the fandom)

Just curious what the fandom thinks of the status of nations having kids, be it with other nations or with humans, and as it should be implied, this is in the context of a Standard Nationverse world, no human AUs or omegaverse or anything else as those are separate cases

why do u think that turkey in hetalia wears a mask? (yeah I know I joked about it being a jojo reference cuz there's a city in turkey called kars and the villain kars from jojo has a stone mask, it looks much different from turkey's)
but for real
some say it's to cover up a scar, but he doesn't seem to have any scars?
maybe it's to appear cool and to be recognizable? to appear mysterious?
or maybe, in the past, he was very war-like, and in battle, he'd cover his eyes so his enemies wouldn't see his eye movements and thus, they'd be unable to predict what he'd do?
is it some sort of an anime trope?
orrrrr himaruya simply heard something about atatürk's mask, a monument in turkey that commemorates the founder/first president of the turkish republic but had no idea what the monument actually was and thought "ok I'ma give this character a mask" maybe hima's original idea was "the character's mask represents the monument" or "it was a gift" but later forgot that idea and drew the character with the mask during ottoman times cuz he began associating turkey with the mask

Ladies and gentlemen i present you Thessaloniki on her Byzantine era✨. And Herakles(as Byzantine empire ofc). Thessaloniki was a really important city in eastern roman empire, the second most important city actually. The first one was obviously Constantinople. And held so much power that she was referred as Symvasilevousa,(co-regnant). Btw i imagine her having a sister-brother relationship with herakles other than city-country relationship? Also the clothes are from the 14th century. And i was bored to finish Herakles on the first pic,i admit😔

My brain at 2AM: If Wales, Scotland, and N. Ireland have magic like England then they would have his magic vision too
My brain: So they could see things other nations couldn’t. Like say: if “England” was actually “British Empire” and “Sealand” was his replacement in-waiting, the actual “England” for when Arthur dies like Grandpa Rome did
My brain: Unless England somehow sticks around until Fort Sealand crumbles and Sealand becomes a normal human who will age and die
My brain: Thanks to this the rest of the UK brothers know, sooner or later, they will lose a little brother no matter what

these... nation people... do they control the government or does the government control them?
Oh, an ask! I haven't received one of these for a while! Glad there are still people interested.
That's quite simple to answer, actually. There was one time when I had to take some documents with our leader, and when I was getting out of the room, the nation entered, most likely to talk to the leader. I stayed by the door's side for some while, trying to hear what they were saying, and I could at least identify some authority coming from someone, and it was not the nation. I could be wrong, but my conclusion is that, in fact, it's the government that controls the nation.
It would make some sense if you think that, since the nations represent the country's people, then they would have to obey the same leader as us. Now, I'm pretty sure they still have a lot of influence on most of government decisions. Not as the final voice, but someone whose view has to be taken in consideration.
Thinking of this makes me a bit concerned, since... Well, what would guarantee that these immortal creatures don't have the same thoughts that existed in the past? The same backward and conservative thoughts that existed (and unfortunately still exist)? Unless their opinions evolute as time passes, or just adjust to the ideals of their country... I don't know what to think of this, honestly. We still need to know more about these 'nation' things to really have a concrete idea of what they are. For now, it's just speculation.

So, what are the Male Nyotalia counterparts supposed to be like?
Tumblr media
I'm aware that canonically, the Nyotalia counterparts are pretty much irrelevant to the series and were probably made for fun, but this has been bugging me for a while.
So, canonically, the female Nyos have personalities that are separate from their male counterparts. For example, Nyo!England is a "Kuudere" instead of a "Tsundere", Nyo!Russia is "emotionally unstable" instead of "childishly cruel", Nyo!France is more argumentative and protective of Canada, and Nyo!China is supposedly more difficult to read emotionally than China.
Female Nyos are also "stronger than their male counterparts." Nyo!Italy, Nyo!Romano, Nyo!America and Nyo!Germany are all total badasses and, according to Hima, "Hetalia with female Italy would not exist because she would keep beating everyone up."
We have all this info about the girls, but...what about the guys?
Tumblr media
All we have are the canon designs, but no info on their personalities.
So I've been theorizing a bit. Let's say that the Nyos, regardless of gender, are meant to be stronger than their counterparts. With that in mind, would that make Nyo!Wy less of a Tsundere, or make Nyo!Belgium less insecure about his looks? With the way Hima writes his female characters, who are generally meant to be stronger than his male characters, this wouldn't make much sense.
I think a more likely theory is that the male Nyos are actually weaker and/or more soft-spoken in comparison to their female counterparts. I like to imagine that their personalities are like that of the first drafts of the original female characters (which would make sense in Nyo!Hungary's case since Hungary was originally going to be male and a pervert). But outside of that, perhaps Nyo!Belgium is all happy-go-lucky to compensate for low self-esteem? Is Nyo!Wy is a bit more aggressive and headstrong but secretly lonely (kinda like Ladonia)? Maybe Nyo!Belarus is more of a shy, mild-mannered Tsundere who mutters under his breath like how Belarus was originally meant to.
With that idea in mind, what do you guys think the Nyo!Guys' personalities would be like? I'm more than happy to hear your ideas, so please feel free to share(^-^)
Update: I forgot to include Nyo!Monaco, turns out he actually has a personality (against all odds😅).
Tumblr media
"He's said to be strong, a gourmet, and enjoy driving, but he's rather bad at gambling despite the prevalence of casinos in Monaco. He owns a Japanese-style garden and has a weird, but good relationship with France, despite the one fight that they had (two days after the fight he said "It’s no good without big brother France" and they seem to have made up.) Oddly enough, the France he was depicted with, and as having an odd relationship with, was male France.
He was originally under Spain's protection, eventually wound up with France, then Italy, and then finally gained his independence with France's help, though he leans toward France nowadays." -Hetalia Archives
We can see here that Nyo!Monaco, while being considered "pretty strong", is still a lot more meek and soft-spoken compared to his female counterpart. Versus Monaco herself, who makes it abundantly clear from the moment you meet her that she bends backward for no one.
Thanks for further supporting my theory, HetaArchives.
This is also proof that the Nyos canonically coexist with their counterparts (other than Hima not specifying whether it was Canada or his Nyo that Nyo!France is protective of).
