my favorite thing about about the 90's young justice solos is that they catered towards three distinct audiences, and yet after all these years, the one that would have been LEAST likely to be projected into nowadays is now the MOST woobified out of the three.

tim: a story for white kids, by a white guy who hates poor people, and didn't really take itself OUT of that white-male-projective-state even after all these years. bonus note, now the gays can project into tim cuz timbo's finally out the closet, and chuck dixon wants to kill himself over it, but it's ok bc we like tim even tho we don't like chuck.

bart: a story initially about a time-displaced refugee whose narrative heavily mirrored a refugee's forced assimilation into a new culture WHILE also appealing to the adhd/autism crowd, which the writer was absolutely OK with because bart's story can be accepted by BOTH the refugee narrative enjoyers and the adhd/autism crowds without impinging on his narrative poignancy, plus mark waid actually loved bart and he loves that WE love bart. inshallah he will write his boy again.

kon: a story about teenagers who are being neglected, and so he's acting out every which way and partying it up because he was meant to appeal to the 90's teenage rage and show how easy it is for kids to get caught up with predators like knockout and tana because of the lack of structure and discipline in their lives, but when geoff decided to ignore nearly ten years of creator-run canon, we had to deal with his timkonnie dreams, and now geoff's leaving, so now we gotta deal with the yja nonsense and some lady's self-insert dreams going into a character whose writer is not only still alive, but actively on the bi!kon train but from the 90's crackhead era perspective. and HE'S the one most woobified.

it's absolutely facinating cuz you'd think kon would be the most hated out of the three bc of his issues with consent and the unhealthy ways he frames relationships, but instead it's BART who people hate the most! bart's being infantalized and discounted and used at a third-man-ship-prop, while tim's being rewarded for being an emotionally strugglesome white man who just came out of the closet, and it's not nearly as bad as how bart's getting his ass beat in the fandumb, but poor tim can't even date his high school homie in peace without someone crying about how he 'deserved' kon instead.

to think that the character with that many issues would be the MOST woobified character in the yj cast is insane, bc what are you even woobifying? his depersonalization? his lack of boundaries with women? his inability to read a room? the fact that nobody loves nor cares about him enough to protect him from the horrors of the world? the fact that he was a stellar example of a CSA survivor who didn't even KNOW he was a victim of CSA, and thus wasn't really able to understand the ramifications of his inappropriate behavior until years later when he forced himself into a masculine fold so he didn't fall into the trap of being like 'the old him' again?

kon's story was a story of self-hatred come to life in the most fantastical ways. he thinks it's ok to publicly date a grown woman other people are judging for dating a dumbass minor. he didn't know what a mother's love was, and had to witness it first hand with nanaue's mother. he thinks an emotionally unavailable and distant clone handler is his dad bc he doesn't KNOW anyone else who can fit into that mold. he thinks roxy's his sister but still has no problem sexualizing her in his head bc he thinks it's ok to find your older sister hot.

kon was the DEFINITION of the kids are not alright, nope, not at all, hell to the fuck no. geoff was the single biggest driver in stripping all the nuance from his character post-graduation day, but he not even here no more... what's the excuse in continuing to strip away at what makes kon, kon? i know dc's afraid to admit lois and clark looked the other way when a teenaged clone was dating an adult woman, but you woulda thought he woulda been a turnoff to the fandumb as well. he aint tho, so he suffers for it accordingly.

i can only hope karl kesel lands another contract after these new movies flop, so we can finally get a REAL follow-up to the 1994 solo. you could never make me hate that man's insane writing. justice for 1994 kon. if dc still had good writers, we coulda had a multi-year healing arc exposing how horrifying superheroing really is for people, and why clones deserve something to the equivalent of human rights. instead, he's doin fuckall and kissin m'gann. no shade to m'gann, she absolutely deserves more than the current caricature.

Have you read TSPWL? If the show found the courage to make one of the main kids queer, how do you think they could rewrite it so its Marina Eloise ends up with and not Philip?

I was thinking of this bc while the Theo plot was a rather blatant way to push back against speculation Eloise was gay, I still can see Eloise’s respect/admiration for Kate in S2 being a crush? I wish they’d explore that in S3. She can have her fling with Theo to burst her privilege bubble and also realize she likes girls too and ultimately end up with Marina 🤞 I just refuse to believe Marina can meet the same fate as in the books—the optics are beyond gross—and it’s so unbelievable for the show version of Eloise.

I know Benedict is the one everyone imagines as bi (and he could be too of course), but I suspect with that actor’s kind of cult following they will end up pairing him with Sophie (…eventually).

I have read TSPWL and I will say that even the question of Eloise's sexuality entirely aside...it is my least favorite of the romances (barring the ick at the end of TDAI) for a number of reasons I don't want to get into. I think other parts of the book, like the sibling content are very fun though.

As for the Marina thing, I haven't really thought of ways for them to make that work. For fic I've always liked the thought of gender-bending Phillip, but the idea of Marina and Eloise could become very interesting with some character work, seeing as they are both very bull-headed! There was a stunning lack of relationship there even though they were both good friends with pen in s1.

As for the future of the show --I think they've made it so so clear that the only chance of queer rep we get on this show is through side characters. But they didn't even have the fuckin decency to give us that in s2. Considering how many people involved in production are queer, its mind-boggling and kinda makes me think either netflix as the distributor or people way high up in the ranks at Shondaland are very against it. It sucks, but bc of that i don't care to disappoint myself by thinking of the possibility of us getting canon queer rep esp as a main couple.

The only hope I have is that I really really really don't want Marina to die. Theyre so good at writing drama, I hope they can write their way out of the hole they dug regarding that situation.

As for Benedict? God who tf knows if they'll even make it to his season. From a narrative perspective i don't think they know what to do with him, and I don't think an Eloise season 4 is out of the question. If they do make it to him, I think it'll be WOC sophie. That doesn't mean he cant be bi along the way! (Tho like i said they're cowards :) )

Anyway! For all these reasons I think its great to look into fic for queer bridgerton rep! And its LGBridgerTon week on ao3 this week so its the perfect time

i’m making a separate post bc I didn’t want to clutter this post even more, but I think keeping Nihlus on the team would solve a lot of me1 problems with both clunky first act structure and Saren’s lackluster characterization.

like, the game clearly tries to present Saren as this far-end Renegade who started with good intentions and similar attitudes to Renegade\Ruthless Shepard, they use a lot of similar “getting things done no matter the cost” rhetoric, but we only see\hear about him after his fall from grace, we never get examples\stories of him doing legit heroic shit. So his quick, 1-minute redemption falls pretty flat in my opinion, bc there’s practically no build up or emotional investment in seeing Saren as more than just an asshole. The most we get is this abominably awkward dialogue with Liara about “mb he’s misunderstood and had noble intentions??” that makes no fucking sense bc first, Liara had to kill her own mother bc of Saren, second, it’s shoehorned right after Virmire where one of your teammates dies bc of him, third, she has no arguments except for “hmmmm, but what if??”. But if we had Nihlus, Saren’s old friend, partner (and mb ex lover?), it would very naturally give us a perspective of someone who knew Saren at his best and would be willing to try and find some excuses.

also, as I’ve said, me1′s first act is v clunky, bc they just straight up tell you that Saren is a bad guy in a cutscene that Shepard can’t even see, but then they make you run around getting proof, but there’s no suspense, basically no dramatic stakes, you can’t even pretend you’re investigating, you just feel like you’re wasting your time. But what if instead we didn’t have any obvious proof that Saren did it? Like, first of all, we start with including Nihlus on the team, bc he’s supposed to be evaluating Shepard’s performance, for fuck’s sake, why would he want move faster on his own, bioware. He still gets shot by Saren, BUT it happens almost at the end of the mission, so he and Shepard get to work together, and second, it’s done by the sniper rifle and we don’t see who the shooter was (in-game a headshot from a Spectre-gear sniper rifles can plausibly take off both shields and most, if not all, of the enemy health, so it’s not dumb as Nihlus going down from a one pistol shot), and third, he’s taken out of commission for the rest of the mission so we can still recruit Ash, but he survives. After that, when Shepard accuses Saren of working with geth, the Council appoints Nihlus to investigate, bc honestly, internal affairs investigation by Garrus makes no sense. Garrus is a regular cop, it’s like sending airport security to investigate James Bond. (don’t worry, shakarians, when I’m hired to write me1-remake, we can still fit your boy in there, bc he’s gonna have a very different characterization and dynamic from Nihlus) So now instead of the Council just being idiotically obtuse we have to convince Nihlus that Saren did it, and it’d make sense that he’s resistant to this idea bc they are friends and he can’t believe Saren would try to kill him. We can restructure this part of the game to resemble an actual investigation more and make it a bit longer, not by a lot, just frex integrating Telos, bc rn Telos serves no narrative purpose, you could easily cut it out and just recruit Liara on the Citadel like everyone else, and second bc rn “ undeniable proof” is stupid, as if you couldn’t just fake an audio file?? Instead we can have Tali have leads to Telos, and there we find an actual evidence.

After that we can have an actual dramatic scene with the Council, where Nihlus has to confront Saren about his betrayal, instead of the Council just being clowns like we have right now. The rest of the game is structured pretty much the same, Nihlus stick with Shepard to bring down Saren and his arc is coming in terms with Saren’s downfall, but learning to trust Shepard despite the recent betrayal. I think it’d be cool and thematically relevant to have someone represent Paragon end of Spectre scale, bc right now we have only Renegade in Saren. Nihlus could play this role, being no-nonsense, but responsible, but also having to confront the reality of how the Council treats Shepard vs how he’s treated himself and realize that even tho he himself is not prejudiced and judges people by their actions (he canonically is the one who nominates Shepard to become a Spectre despite turian-human conflicts), the system in whole is stacked against non-Council races. I’m seeing his dynamic with Shepard with Legolas\Gimli vibe of mutual respect, but playful competitiveness. Also, I know it’s controversial, but I’m not married to Nihlus being turian, he needs to be one of the Council races, and we already have asari and turian on the team, so he can be our salarian representation that me1 lacks. but tbh i don’t feel strongly either way.

– Overall opinion of them

Ok I fucking love this boy, of course, but I hate the way most ppl in fandom portray and view him? He’s one of the most popular characters but I always hate when he’s reduced to like, funny pancake boy, or charming suave prince, or Ren’s angsty boyfriend or whatever. He works best when you see him as a narrative foul to Ren and a sort or alternative protagonist, as well as just a completely feral kid with so many issues to work through dhdkfnfk. Sadly fandom content really colors my view of him at times so it’s a hard balance to strike, especially for a character I think is so neat

– Gender/sexuality headcanons

This one is interesting bc I know transmasc Akechi is a fairly popular HC for LGBT ppl but I really like the idea of transfem Akechi who has to hide that part of themself for social clout, and who never becomes comfortable enough during the game to explore that part of their identity, and doesn’t until after spending time at rehab post-game. That’s kinda why I took that route with Blake, albeit differently dhdkfj. The lack of like, content or support for this HC is why I don’t really push it or explore it, usually still using he/him and such, and also why I primarily focus on that as a facet of Blake. Sexuality is hard too bc I don’t think shipping him with anyone in-game works very well. There’s the obvious like, vague romantic tension and undertones with Ren in the game but I don’t ever see it as a romantic relationship nor do I think it would be healthy if it were djdjfjf and I think Akechi knows that too. I think it would take therapy before he can start sorting those feelings out dndkfn as it stands he already has trouble forming bonds with others so it’s not easy to say, even for him.

– Favorite moment in canon

God there are so many good scenes with this asshole dhdkfj. I think the boss fight, and in particular the transformation into black mask and that reveal, are really cool? The fact that it plays Awakening during the black mask / Loki reveal and then Will Power during the subsequent fight is just so good. There’s also the scene in Royal where he and Ren talk to Maruki before giving him the calling card, the way Maruki attempts to use his life as a shield and he just outright rejects it.

– Favorite moment in a fanwork

Dhdjdjdj this would get into spoilers but there’s a planned Deja Vu development with Akechi that vane has told me abt that I’m really really excited for. As for the existing stuff tho, fortunately there’s vane’s entire “Strikes One Through Three” fic that’s just perfect at addressing this characterization, and also, I’m really fond of the Deja Vu scene where he has lunch with Kasumi and Ren dndkfn.

– Favorite line, in canon or otherwise

Gosh it’s unfair how many killer lines this kid gets. Of course my current discord status is “Justice? Righteous!? Keep that shit to yourselves!” Which is just SO good and so well delivered in-game, but there’s also “I’m a little offended that you think so little of me that you expected me to be dead” and “are you really so spineless that you’d fold over some bullshit, trivial threat to my life?” Dhdjfjf.

– Characters I love seeing them interact with

The big one is OBVIOUSLY Ren bc thematic foils, but there are so many smaller relationships that go unexplored. Him and Ann are so interesting bc they’re ultimately very similar, but they’ve taken very different paths in life both emotionally and in terms of their affiliations. There’s also his criminally underdeveloped (in canon) relationship with Kasumi, who’s basically his only genuine friend before the game starts? He also has some really interesting parallels with Futaba but sadly the whole “killing her mom” thing makes it hard to address those, y’know, dndkfn.

– Last thing before sleeping headcanons

This kid cannot sleep well and tends to work himself to exhaustion until all he can do is pass out, avoiding as much time alone with his thoughts as possible. After awhile he just quickly prepares for bed and collapses, and just crashes.

– Sleeping habits headcanons

He has so many nightmares, sources of panic and so much fear around vulnerability that sleeping is an ordeal for him every time. He has to take as many precautions as possible and even then he’s prone to waking up every 10 minutes gasping or screaming. He’s never really gotten a good night’s sleep.

– First thing after waking up headcanons

To minimize grogginess and vulnerability, he immediately gets up, puts on a pot of coffee, and gets dressed in casual clothes to start the day, trying to seamlessly transition into being awake.

– Favorite locations headcanon

He’s got these weird, kind of bittersweet bonds with the places his mom took him, and tends to kind of avoid them for awhile, not wanting to confront those memories or taint those places until he’s better. I think the jazz club is actually somewhere he just kind of chose one day, liked, and became a regular. It slowly dawned on him that this favorite place wasn’t really different from those favorite places, and he’d spent so long away that maybe they aren’t his favorite places anymore. There’s a sour feeling once he recognizes that.

Trish by her independent nature and tremendous Will proves those stereotypes are bullshit, not even factoring in their first meeting as already making a huge impression on his beliefs of what girls can do- Trish knowing how to challenge him by staying true to herself yet having the compassion to help someone suffering and with fewer chances from birth than she had would not only win him over but give him something even Bruno can't, self sustaining confidence, bc Trish isn't part of a chain of command, she's just a girl in love with a boy who wants him to be happy and that concept while foreign to him for so long once it kicks in he could actually learn to build himself For himself and For someone who wouldn't use him for some greater schemes or dirty work,

I love Bruno ok he's one of the best characters in anything ever but his flaw in his ability to help motivate ppl is tied to that fact that he's bringing them into a dangerous strict order of command to Serve not entirely in a place/way that lets them just be themselves and realize organic loving relationships with anyone and themselves SO

That all being said, Everything Trish does he's paying attention to, she keeps him alive during the Grateful Dead fight not because she needs him to serve for a cause ( a cause might I add even Bruno the near saint he is was ready to let Nara go right then and there for bc death is in the job description) but because she doesn't know him well yet and shit he even swung a knife at her when they first met over who was in the bathroom, but he's a person suffering and in pain and to let him die even if it's Expected Of The Mission is garbage to her even if she respects Bruno down the line as a father compared to fucking evil Diavolo,

Trish constantly goes out her way to do these things for Nara bc Trish instinctively knows he's the most vulnerable mentally and her sense of compassion and justice (likely something Donatella made sure to instill in her before her death by cherishing Trish and spoiling her even as a single mother) will not stand to not help someone when she could've- and he reciprocates it even if in disbelief bc he can tell This Person Is Safety, This Person Is Like Me Yet Not, A Better Me I Want To Be, by the time he's about to die someone with his fragile mind was actually gaining conviction about taking control for himself on his own terms and he would risk even those chances to defend the person who actually helped him arrive there (along with Gio) in the first place,

I think by the end of his life he rly did love her or start to, it being romantic or not is up to individual interpretation to which you know I'm in the romance camp, point is he found someone who truly taught him strength without him fully realizing it and did so without belittling him, if anything instead treating him only with love and kindness and patience (not being a door mat for him, but like, not treating him like ass like everyone else has their moments of either), I think anything Trish asks of him, this is all why he's so willing to do it on top of feeling deep empathy, I've written in my character notes as well that like this goes even further to sex being one of the most intimate things there is, like I kno we jest and jape abt Teens Doing Dumb Shit bc we're clowns

but the sheer vulnerability you have to have esp in a first love situation to be willing to go through with that for the first time ever takes a lot of trust and courage, aspects I think Trish was able to give him and would solidify in asking something seen as so important for many people from him, the headstrong Trish wants to be vulnerable for him and the slowly confidence boosted Narancia wants to accept that faith and trust and love and exchange it with his own of the same for her, it's not horny teens 100% it's two hurt but hopeful kids on the verge of having to be adults wanting to find another piece of identity in how they are with someone else, obvs it will forever be offscreen bc pedos deserve to be skinned alive

I just feel that the components that would fuel them to do something teens try to do to feel more adult and bc hormones are a lot more based in growing maturity than pure lust, I think this is what I fully mean by Writing About Teens Exploring Love And Sexuality; Not Fetishizing And Reveling In Showing The Act Itself Especially For Disgusting Titillation, I think this and not explicitly writing the sex are the difference between child porn and creating realistic characters

Yeah, it is going to sound like a dumb take but the topic of sex and sexuality itself is not inherently sexual, by which I meant it isn’t the focus — there’s SO much more to it and in this case especially it can be like the ultimate sign of love, trust, intimacy, compassion, trying to make your way as a teen through a harsh world, like I can go on. Nasties Dont Interact but the shying away from the mere mention of it in a non-sexualized context is unrealistic.

Yes The Grateful Dead fight i 1000% agree is so important in both his personal growth and the development of their relationship, I think it’s an important parallel that he is dumbfounded about her going to such lengths to keep him alive without the sense of duty/obligation versus Trish’s feelings and outbursts of confusion on why Bucciarati and his gang even cared about her, protecting her to the point of death being on the line.(edited)

all these elements of complication and similarities between their characters is why ive gotten so passionate about both them and their relationship (whether romantic or platonic it’s really fucking strong and good), the story of two kids making it through adversity, learning to unshoulder their burdens and lean on others, the Found Family™️, and learning and growing together is just so much more fucking deep and complex than the mainstream bs that exists.

now im not any type of elitist hipster but esp in male and female relationships portrayed in what feels like basically fucking everything are just like CompHet Bullshit and they’re together bc They Are Just Supposed To Be (not to mention the toxic masculinity culture within that where the women barely have character arcs and are just seen as objects anyways) But what I’m trying to say is that in this the relationship is real and it feels earned in a way that just isn’t there in so much other media out there(edited)
