What's your PhD about?
I haven't started it yet cause I'm looking for funding first so this might change (also I've altered the PhD propossal depending on the professor that would be my supervisor) but basically I want to study the Muses through the lens of Cultural Memory.
The ideal thing would be to study them and their evolution throughout ancient Greece, but that's impossible so for example my current PhD director suggested I should focus on the Archaic Era (also the Dark Ages, so around the 10th to 6th centuries BCE more or less). I am very interested in the relationship between identity, literacy, and religiosity, so the Muses are perfect for it, as they were used by the Greeks as a sort of fact-check for aoidoi and poets, which were the preservers of Cultural Memory.
Most stuff that's been written about the Muses has always been very philological and especially related to the 'invocation of the Muses' so prevalent in Greek literature. I want to open the scope to new angles, something never done before, and I have experience working with Cultural Memory from my Master's Thesis, so I thought it would be a cool approach :) It's gonna be much more theoretical than you would expect, but I love that sorta thing. Also it's impossible to separate the Muses from literacy so I'll be looking at written sources for sure, my good pal Hesiod (whom my Undergrad Thesis was about) will occupy a good chunk of the research I'm afraid.
So yeah, that's it. This won't happen if I don't get funding tho, so I could just never write this Ph.D. Who knows.
#ask#sorry for the lengthy answer anon i've had to write so many phd proposals in the past few months i just go with the autopilot#i hope it's comprehensive enough. and please feel free to ask more questions!! i am very passionate about this so i would love#to answer more stuff like this :)#i'm currently researching my second master's thesis btw#it's gonna be about the cult of the muses in thespiai#so a bit of context#the heliconian muses (which are like the 'canon' muses; the ones described by hesiod) 'originated' around helicon mt#this is a real place in boeotia greece#the valley of this mountain is the valley of the muses. hesiod lived right there#in ascra.#ascra at some point was conquered by the city of thespiai. and it was part of it for the rest of ancient greece#(this happened very early on btw. like probably 8th or 7th century)#there was a sanctuary of the muses built in the vale#and this agonic competition (like a music festival) took place there called mouseia#it became incredibly important#but the thing is. this all happened in the hellenistic era (so 2nd - 1st centuries BCE)#there is barely any evidence of anything muses related in thespiai before that#noticeably it was in the hellenistic era when hesiod really became famous#so i want to study the evolution of the cult of the muses in thespiai; the evidence (or lack thereof) for it; and its instrumentalization#by thespiai#i'll mostly do it through epigraphy cause 1) it's the source i'm most comfortable with and 2) there's not really much else#i'll also sprinkle in cultural memory and some heavy theoretical stuff in there just for fun#so yeah i'm having fun with it :) hopefully i'll finish it by october!

Wings of Fire Aro-spec Headcanons
I didn't realize it was aro-spec week until today and I wanted to post my headcanons for aro-spec characters in Wings of Fire (because I used to do this, for some reason I thought I had already made a post like this last year but I can only find the pan headcanon one). I'm actually demiromantic so I should probably have known about this week.
I've definitely been giving characters more aro-spec headcanons recently so there should be quite a bit (also means this might likely be a long list).

Had some fun musing on Mari-butterfly names:
Glasswing/Greta Oto, for the Glasswing Butterfly (May play into a 'I show you who you truly are/I am honest' theme)
Andromica, for the Andromica clearwing (Same themes as the Glasswing butterflies)
Gossamer, (Plays into her fashionista side and a spiderweb theme)
Lycaenidae, for the gossamer-winged butterflies
Lotis, for the Lotis Blue, (Mostly for her hair)
Idas, for the Idas blue (Mostly for her hair)
Candalid, for Candalidini
Niphan, for Niphandini
Also neutral one's that could apply to a lot of characters:
Madame Metamorphosis, for the transformation aspect
Heliconius/Heliconian, for the longwing butterflies
Vanessa Cardui, for the Painted Lady Butterfly
Painted Lady, for the Painted Lady Butterfly
Chrysallís, for the pupal stage of butterflies
Nympha, for the pupal stage of butterflies
Aureli, for the pupal stage of butterflies
Sevenia, for the tree nymph butterflies
Riodinidae, for metalmark butterflies
& finally some Chloe one's for if she steals/saves, Nooroo & goes wild:
Zerene, yellow & Black, plus a homage to Taking a Crack at being a Parent by generalluxun.
Cesonia, or the Zerene family of butterflies & the yellow & Black color scheme
Chrysós, for gold, has ties to Chrysallís, the pupal stage of butterflies
Coliadinae, for the sulphurs or yellow butterflies
Colias, for the clouded yellow butterflies
You know I hate that Canon used 'Monarch' because damn it that was the name I use for Butterfly!Chloé and now I gotta either double down and explain every time I use the name or pick a new one(these are good options tho)

Wings of Fire designs #8, Heliconian.
I really don't have much to say about this one, I just did it since I also did Heliconia and I thought it was funny that their names were so similar. I have several design drafts for characters that have no description given, but this is the first one I'm posting I'm pretty sure, so that's neat. This one was heavily inspired by heliconian butterflies in real life.
Also I have no idea what happened with the simplified Silkwing base compared to the full thing, sorry

"Let us begin our song from the Heliconian Muses" ; so Hesiod wrote, they say, while he kept his sheep. " Sing, Ο goddess, the wrath," and "Tell me, Muse, the man," said Calliope by the mouth of Homer. Now I have got to write a proem of some sort. But what shall I write now I am beginning to publish this second book ? " Olympian Muses, daughters of Zeus, I should not have been saved unless Nero Caesar had given me money."

Wings of Fire Dragin Guide, Part Five: HiveWings and SilkWings
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is a HiveWing, or hive dragon. They have red, orange, and/or yellow scales, but always have some black scales on them as well. They are distantly related to SilkWings. Their powers can range from wrist/tail/claw stingers, the ability to shoot some stingers and regrow them, venomous fangs, paralyzing toxins/boiling acid/pain-inducing venom and possibly more unexplored options. They have four dragonfly/wasp-like wings, and live in the Hives across the savanna (now partially forest) continent of Pantala. Their diet consists of zebra, gazelle, birds, snakes, sharks, fish, as well as apples,, cinnamon, honey, nectar, confectionery, and coffee and tea.. They are named after different insects except for moths and butterflies, such as:
Social insects (Hymneoptera): Wasp, Hornet, Yellowjacket...
Beetles (Coleoptera): Scarab, Weevil, Chafer, Bombardier...
Orthoptera: Cricket, Grasshopper, Katydid...
Auchenorryhncha: Cicada, Treehopper...
Larvae/Worms: Rootworm, Glowworm, Inchworm...
Arachnid: Vinegaroon...
Other insects: Mantis, Earwig, Aphid, Dragonfly...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
This a SilkWing, or silk dragon, or butterfly dragon. They can be any color and shade except black, are distantly related to HiveWings, and are iridescent. They hatch with wingbuds, as they will go through Metamorphosis, where they spin a Chrysalis and form their wings like a butterfly or moth, at age six. They also inherit their silk glands and silk spinning abilities after this, but can sometimes have flamesilk, which can glow, burn, and be made of fire, but it is extremely rare. They are vegetarian, so they eat things such as tangerines, kumquats, persimmons, garbanzo beans, kale, AZ well as honey, nectar, and confectionery made in the Hives. They were once second-class citizens, until Queen Wasp was defeated and everyone was free from the Othermind (a hivemind-esque thing made up of one small evil plant, an insane *sshole of a human who is the reason the humans were almost wiped out by the dragons, and one of the dragon eggs he stole, which is the dragonet from the egg). (Yes, the Scorching, which is their event that formed the dragon tribe and world as we know it, is because this freaky little jerk of a man stole dragon eggs, thus causing other human kingdoms to do so. So the dragon parents banded together and literally scorched the world to the the ground. Then they chose the first dragon queen, and the tribes formed over the next few hundred years after...) SilkWings are named after butterflies and moths, such as:
Butterflies: Monarch, Blue, Swordtail, Fritillary, Tortoiseshell, Admiral, Heliconian, Argus...
Moths: Luna, Io, Tussock, Cinnabar, Orange, Festoon, Lappet, Burnet...
